Wow! What a pleasant experience. I didn't come here for any type of physiological or mental health treatment, so I can't give a review on those provided services. I had a 329 medical cannabis appointment. Although I had a hiccup the prior week with scheduling and they hadn't put me down in their calendar when I went to check in they couldn't find my appointment and had to reschedule me as that were booked for that day. Very unconventional therapy but got me off forty years of dependence on pain medication. Dr.Cook was my psychiatrist. Some of my family think he shouldn't have indicated to me that I could microdose psylocybin, but tant pis, as they say in French. It was worth making a giant mess of my house to be rid of FORTY YEARS of drug dependency !!! Now I take supplements to manage my interstitial cystitis and other health issues. I haven't been back to the office in awhile and I see a wonderful woman counselor at Queen's to manage my "mood disorder" - which BTW, also seems to have resolved itself. Now I just need to find a friggin' PCP and get a referral to a cardiologist. Also, the people in the office are very nice and the therapy was only $30 a visit which is a real deal, believe me. There's a check off for "care quality" what does that even mean? Five stars for these guys. The practice regularly changes the time of your appointment and the person it's with within an hour of your original scheduled time. They double-charged my insurance, randomly charged my card on file for another amount with no description of why, and then ignored my countless calls and emails as I try to clarify these three different charges. Right now I owe over $280 and they took a $70 unauthorized charge out of my card for a three-minute call to get my prescription refilled-- the same prescription I've been on for years with none of these issues. Super rude service and they're not afraid to ghost you, even as the insurance company sends you collection notices for their mistakes!! read more

I am suffering from insomnia and this company was referred to me by my GP at Straub (they gave me a list of potential therapists). I called this company as well one other because it seemed to be very professional. Neither of them picked up the phone so I left a message explaining that I'm interested in CBT-I. It's been two weeks and I have yet to receive a call back from either one. Maybe therapists are just flakey but I am so disappointed since I'm desperate for relief. read more

UPDATE: after finding a new Dr, they were told by Cook's office that my dose was 3x higher than it was. My new Dr matched and I got violently ill. DANGER WARNING! Jeopardize lives = NOT OK. This review is 1yr+ overdue. They used to be "Alleviant of Honolulu" but it looks like they no longer support this location. Ketamine infusions is a godsend for many with chronic pain, so I finally got brave. I wasn't afraid of the procedure; but of the disappointment at another failed treatment. I didn't think I could handle more proof that I may never find effective pain relief. Sadly that's what I got from my visits to Dr Cook's office. I set up a consult to discuss infusions for pain. Was told I qualified and to bring docs listing my diagnosis. For best success he emphasized going into each session with positivity. He recommended my injection for the next week so he could be around for my initial session and I could continue while he was out for a month. I was ECSTATIC! But I let my hopes get too high :( I arrived, filled out papers, hubs left to return at said end time. I'd've had an IV hooked up already, if Nurse1 hadn't preferred "Dee" handle the IV (tiny veins). Understandable! Nurse1 was hands down the kindest nurse I've ever had; perfect bedside manner, true empathy. Then Dr came in; apologized he couldn't treat my pain? Apparently my papers didn't have a diagnosis. He could treat my depression with 2hrs but not 3hrs for my pain. I pulled up my phone to show my docs listed my pain treatment. He said that should work; but just in case, I should get a letter from my pain Dr so we can switch over to pain treatment. He left and in came Dee. She reiterated the rejection so I told her about the info on my docs. She showed me there was only suspicion of the diagnosis. I showed the 1st page was one visit but there were 2 others on the next pages. She thumbed through saying it didn't show a diagnosis. She insisted "treated for XYZ Syndrome" wasn't enough. :( Trying to avoid that devastating rejection, I succumbed to being treated for depression until I could provide more docs. She said, ok we'll do a 1hr session. I smiled and asked in the nicest voice I could, hoping to not upset her more, "Dr. Cook said 2hrs?" Her face got flush, she firmly stated "I'm the nurse practitioner administering, so I get the final say." I took deep breaths to try to stay positive despite her negativity. I asked if we could review my pain Dr's records together, so I could see if any of the info would suffice. She said "websites don't have the info you need; we don't have time for that anyway." I had a 2hr session that she cut to 1; but we don't have time? The comment that finally did me in, as she locked eye contact, "You don't need to go through with the procedure". Fighting tears, I was submissive for the rest of the session, telling myself over again that the potential relief is worth the emotional abuse. By now, all shreds of positivity were gone. After infusing, Nurse1 offered to help me at every step. I'm blown away by her willingness to help. On my way out, I saw Dee at a desk so I raised my hand and called out thank you! She barely looked up to say a meek you're welcome. :( So much for my attempt to resolve the bad taste. I followed up with my pain Dr the next day; got an email confirming my diagnosis, as instructed. I also saved my online "Health Summary" listing my diagnosis. I called; asked to speak with the Dr or nurse about my updated docs, to ensure it'd suffice. Based on their input, I was sure it would be! 2 days of nada, so I followed up, worried I'd miss the Dr before he left town. The desk said to email the docs to them. Sent; waited. I was excited when I saw a call til I found out it wasn't the Dr or nurse. The receptionist relayed that Dee said the docs weren't enough; docs need to be faxed directly from my pain Dr. No raising my voice. But I was firm relaying my disappointment, assuring her that it wasn't personal. She was understanding. 1. At my consult, Dr said to bring in any docs to show my diagnosis 2. Why would he say that if it wasn't acceptable? 3. Why didn't they have a form so they could request records on my behalf or I could do it? 4. Why wasn't I informed of the fax req? 5. Why wasn't it listed on any of the handouts? 6. Why wasn't it listed on any intake forms? 7. Nurse2 asked for my docs minutes before injection time. Why ask for docs that weren't acceptable? 8. Per my last talk with the Dr, a note from my pain Dr would cover me 9. Why does their website say "No referral form is necessary"? My tears said enough was finally enough.  I decided to cut ties with Cook and to write an honest thorough review to hopefully protect others from the emotional roller coaster that they put me through. I cannot say enough good things about this place. I have had some form of mental illness for over 20 years. I've been through every SSRI, benzodiazepine, talk therapy, biofeedback, maoi inhibitor. Nothing seemed to ever truly work and at the beginning of the year, I finally decided to just completely take an alternate route. Dr. Cook worked with me to reduce my 5 psychiatric medications down to much lower doses of two (per my request). I would have wanted off all of them sooner but he wanted to do so safely and slowly and I see why now. I did TMS treatment for depression for 6 weeks and was able to quantify results weekly by noting my mood and behaviors. My quality of life is so much better now. I also see Kayla, their wellness coach, who helps me with finding proper nutrition for me and my specific situation. She is fantastic and talks me through feeding the soul, not just the body. The staff is very friendly and you never feel an ounce of judgement. I look forward to starting ketamine therapy for my PTSD soon. read more

One of the biggest issues in getting proper mental health care is trying to find a therapist, psychologist, and-or psychiatrist who checks off the basic fundamentals of a good patient-doctor relationship. You need to feel heard and understood, which means you also need to get along with them. (And they also have to take your insurance.) After moving from California to Oahu, I was not looking forward to this selection process. Was the thought of finding a psychiatrist on the island anxiety inducing? Yes. It was. Anxiety enveloped me like a parka, which is the last thing you want to wear in a place that averages 80 degrees and 80% humidity. Then I was referred to Beyond Mental Health (BMH). At first, I was hesitant to schedule. If you're like me, then reliving past traumas, answering probing questions, and trying to make a point that your medications are perfect the way they are, (all in 50 minutes), is not my idea of a fun time. But I'm so overwhelmingly happy that I decided to make an appointment. Dr. Cook is professional yet laid back, nonjudgmental, and an expert in his field. (He's the chupacabra of the psych world.) His clinic focuses on the whole brain, not just one aspect of it, offering nutritional support for better brain functioning, psychologists to help you verbalize and talk your problems out, and also progressive nonmedical therapy options. This last particular route has been a life saver for me. I suffer from treatment resistant depression (among other things) which means that traditional SSRIs have little to no effect on me. In fact, they make me feel worse than I did prior to taking them ... like I was being smothered by a blanket of numbness. After speaking with Dr. Cook, he mentioned Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy (TMS Therapy), which some insurances cover. I decided to see if I qualified, because I had a nice, action-packed, and highly intriguing medical history. Unfortunately, insurance denied my request, stating that "general sadness does not qualify you for TMS therapy". Dr. Cook still thinks that I should appeal my decision and send in my records (which I haven't done yet because it's a process). But in the meantime, he offered up another possible solution, which has helped me greatly: Ketamine therapy. Ketamine has been proven to help with neuroplasticity by creating new pathways in your brain. While it's not a permanent solution, it can help you relearn proper coping skills, break old habits, and basically reboots your brain to before you adopted these particular survival skills. So, I shrugged and went for it. The BMH team is absolutely amazing. The two individuals who help you on your ketamine journey are, in my opinion, experts in their particular roles. Lyle is a paramedic and the one who administers your ketamine injection. He's also a former acupuncturist. He's witty, attentive, and talks you through everything he's doing, watches your vitals, and makes sure that you've got everything you need, like anti-nausea medication and a nice, fuzzy blanket. Kayla is compassionate, soothing, kind-hearted, and helps you reach a calm state before your journey begins, because mindset is incredibly important going into this. If you're in a funky mood, you'll experience that threefold while you're in LaLa land. She makes sure that you've got sound-reducing headphones and nice instrumental music to listen to, which really helps set the mind-mood. If you don't have a friend or family member sitting with you, Kayla will be there to hold space, and make sure that you feel safe and taken care of. When you come to, she will help prepare you for your release back into the "real world", and also offers up ways to get the most out of your session, like getting outside in nature, writing, meditating, eating good food (as in food that's good for you, not hoovering an entire plate lunch), and of course, resting. These actions help your brain heal and strengthen the new pathways that have been built in your noggin. If you've had previous ketamine sessions, she'll also talk about any possible changes you might've felt since your last treatment and if you feel like you're dealing with things any differently. Both of these fantastic individuals have played an essential role in my mental health betterment journey. In all honesty, it was a bummer not getting to see them when I finished my last session. (I had Kayla and Lyle withdrawals.) All kidding aside, they both play very different, yet equally important roles as your guides, and do so with an air of down-to-earth professionalism that makes you feel safe and genuinely cared for. Remember that the people you interact with have an influence on your psyche. That's why I'm glad that Kayla and Lyle are the ones helping me when I go in for my brain rewiring sessions. I don't know who could be better suited for those vital positions, because these two truly feel more like friends and less like people that are being paid to watch over you read more

The new building facility is rather nice and easy to navigate. There is a healthy beverage and snacks pop up restaurant in the lobby. There are (6) six elevators so there basically is really no waiting for the lift. Beyond Mental Healths welcoming and waiting area is like one of the best I have ever been in. I want to leave my wonderful comments for Beyond Mental Health. I had my initial appointment with Dr. Cook. He is a very easy-going person to talk to and is very pleasant. Asked all the pertinent questions and suggested that I try the TMS treatment which is very natural and a safe procedure. Then, his assistant, Ms. Analisa contacted me and set up my evaluation and testing and did all the paperwork with my insurance company. She was very professional in handling all that entail to get me started for the TMS treatment. I truly appreciated all her efforts and great service provided. I started my TMS session on June - July 2023 (36 session treatment) completed. Jayden was the person who administered my weekly treatments. She is very personable with a great attitude and an awesome sense of humor. I looked forward to my sessions with Jayden because of her deep caring and giving me the hope that things will be better in the near future. Glorified "treatment" that is more of a transaction just to set up "follow-up" appts that they claim are furthering treatment but really is just an excuse to continue to charge you an arm and a leg. Appts are minimal and basically are overcharged informational sessions with a doc. I'm talking $100-$300 each not including trmt. No direct questions about YOUR personal mental health journey, struggles, and needs and from what I see, very little care for it. Just FYI med cannabis appts ask more questions. Ketamine is promising and I'm excited for the future of it in Hawaii, but practices like this are holding all of the state back because they choose to provide a service rather than actual medical treatment and take advantage of mentally ill ppl who are only desperately trying to help themselves. If you choose this facility PLS HAVE ANOTHER DOC - as they provide little to no actual support. They must be called Beyond Mental Health because they're beyond actually helping ppl. Drs here are very professional and help in many ways. Through nutrition with Kayla who was always in my sessions because I went through 12 sessions of off label treatment and she took notes as I said key words while I was in the Matrix going through 1 trauma at a time. On session 6 I felt the depression leave and the pain shifted and on session 9 I started walking and the pain was better to the point where I am not furniture surfing anymore at home. My martial arts skills are back and the PTSD from being a police officer in Honolulu is now gone. I was cast aside by western drs coz the only thing offered was antidepressants after 28.9 yrs I am now free enough to play Frisbee and I highly recommend them. read more

I had a bad ketamine experience and I asked to see the doctor after the treatment. I had chest pains an I was told by the receptionist I would need to call and make an appointment to talk with him. Unbelievable! I couldn't believe that he would not walk down to the treatment room I was in and discuss the issue of my blood pressure spiking to 197. I have had treatments before at a clinic in Sacramento and never had an issue with a blood pressure spike. Lyle, the EMT, who oversaw the procedure, gave me nitroglycerin to get my blood pressure back to normal. I left the clinic, feeling despair and frightened due to the lack of care I received during the infusion. The clinic in Sacramento had an anesthesiologist monitor the infusion and I called her and explained my situation. She was a palled that I had this kind of experience and told me that the eight infusions I've had at their clinic my blood pressure was never an issue. I have three large bruises from Lyle's attempts to connect the line to the needle. He had no problem, finding a vein, since I have very good veins. The issue was keeping the needle in the vein while connecting the line. Five days later, I still have huge bruises however, I do feel relieved of the depression I had prior to the infusion. The bottom line for me is that Ketamine works well to treat my TRD but this clinic lacks the professionalism to administer infusions. read more

Omg idk where to start LOL!!! Thomas cook and Dr. Barrett has been taking care of me for the past almost two years. I was suffering completely bad my ptsd depression and anxiety worsen. I'm a military spouse and the military through me out to the wolves and didn't take my mental health seriously I was recommended to dr cook office and they have been able to keep me afloat throughout my time on the island they always took care of me! My depression and anxiety decreased greatly when I was having bad times Deanna and Nikki always got me in immediately. When I first started going I met Deanna in person and she was absolutely sweet and amazing!! She took care of me as well with making sure dr cook and dr Barrett new what I needed she cared so much! And just her energy brightened my day. I never met Nikki in person due to Covid but omg she is the sweetest!! I wish I could have met her in person I wish I could take them with me lol. Nikki always felt my energy when I really needed help it was like she could feel me crying for help And got me a appt booked immediately and always before the end of the call she reassured to take care of myself call them at anytime and just try to stay calm til my appt. She helped in personal ways and went above and beyond to make sure I was okay. I would highly recommend this office!! They are not your typical psychiatrist office they are like family they don't just through you on any Med or anything, they find what works for you, their not judge mental their understand and actually make sure your making progress and when your not they will do whatever it takes to get you in the right path! I went to the clinic back in February of 2019 for Ketamine infusions to treat Severe Clinical Depression. Ketamine is an amazing drug for severe depression and PTSD. A PA gave me the treatment . It returned my mood normal...no staying in bed all day, no suicidal ideation I had a total of 11 treatments from Feb to Sept. I was "well" for the first time in decades. The pain of depression was gone. When I called to make a future appt in late Sept I learned he had discontinued Ketamine treatments and not only did he not inform anyone, he also didn't provide patients with another doc/clinic to continue treatments at an affordable cost ...of the 3 places on Oahu who provided Ketamine, one doc was not taking new patients, the 2 other places charged 6 x as much!! In fact, they charged 1200.00, which is the highest charge for ketamine in the entire country. Ketamine is not covered by insurance. I had only met Dr. Tom Cook once for 10 minutes after a treatment, during which he told me about his personal life ...a divorce, his kids, ..and what a great med. student he had been...how he could have gone ANYWHERE for residency.... I kid you not...it was totally inappropriate. I chalked it up to the fact his PA had told him I had worked in the field with nationally known Psychiatrists...that was true, and had advised the APA and NIMH...He obviously wanted to impress me...I was decades older, perhaps he needed approval ??? who knows...but bottom line, his behavior was very odd. Doctors make a point of NEVER abandoning patients, particularly their sickest patients. Severe depression is the 10th leading cause of death...higher than breast cancer, and yet he stopped providing a lifesaving treatment and never let his patients know...additionally, he left them with no affordable alternative. read more

Aloha, I wanted to further the review by I V. about the 15 min appointments. Although vocally over the phone 15 min appointments were confirmed by his front desk staff, I would say that my appointments have been from 15-25 min long. I only write 25 min because I am including my introductory appointment. Anything under an hour is unacceptable. I take ADHD treatment seriously as I have my whole life. Dr. Cook's demeanor is one of naïveté. A couple examples being: My first appointment was only 25 min long. The lights in his office were off as he was speaking to me. He referred to his divorced wife in a couple of our conversations, and my main problem was that he left the door open. I could make eye contact with people walking to other appointments, I don't feel very comfortable with that. My second appointment was 15-20 min long. I felt rushed to talk and that was after waiting for 35 min because he was behind. He responded to my mothers review with a "sorry you have received inaccurate information." I mean come on, really. Doctors are supposed to be humble, kind, helpful. I am only 23 and hope that I can rely on ADHD specialists to help me be a better person and go through my day successfully. Hope they improve. After my psych closed their practice unexpectedly, I struggled to find another. On a routine visit to my primary care doctor, it was suggested I contact Beyond Mental Health. On my initial visit I was scheduled to meet with Dr. Thomas Cook. I took off from work, without pay, as it's important that I get help. I arrived early and sat patiently for 30min past the appointment start time. Dr. Cook took in another patient when my appointment was scheduled to begin. This meant either I had to extend the time I needed for this appointment or hope the little time I had left would be enough for now. I got 20min out of the office visit. My next appointment I found myself in the waiting area 15min beyond my scheduled appointment. Having to get back to work promptly, I cut my losses and left. Not only I was not afforded the help I was seeking, I had to take leave without pay to do so. I cannot see how Beyond Mental Health has been able to attain its current rating. Yes they offer a wide range of treatments yet if you cannot make an appointment before noon, your only option is telehealth and it seems that for Dr. Cook appointment times are a suggestion. read more

I went to Dr Cook in Nov, 2019 in an attempt to get Ketamine treatment for suicidal depression. I am a psychiatrist and had hoped to benefit from this treatment. After 3 visits to the clinic, I was expecting to be scheduled for the Ketamine infusions. Instead I was called by Dr Cook and told that the nurse practitioner whom I had met with the day prior, did not feel comfortable treating me because of my medical history. Nothing was mentioned to me at the appointment with the nurse practitioner. Dr Cook assured me he would refer me to a provider at Queens who was equiped to provide me with the treatment I needed. I never heard from him again. In my darkest hour, I was left alone, confused and even more hopeless. read more

Dr. Cook is the best! He's knowledgeable, non-judgemental & easy to talk to. Found him while visiting family in Hawaii and he's able to continue seeing me via Telehealth now that I'm back on the mainland. Prescriptions have been super fast & convenient as well. He can send my scripts to any pharmacy in the country, doesn't matter where I am. His staff is great too! They're always sweet/helpful & get back to me same day. read more

They scheduled me for a Telehealth appointment, & the provider never showed up to my scheduled appointment date/time. I received reminder texts beforehand, & testing texts to make sure my connection worked, & confirmation text, & waited the entire appointment time in the "waiting room" with no provider logging on. I called the clinic twice while in the "waiting room" to ask about my appointment time. The first time I called 6 minutes into my appointment time & was told the provider would be online shortly. Called back 18 minutes into my appointment to inquire if I was going to be charged for the appointment since they hadn't seen me yet & my appointment was due to end in 12 minutes, was put on hold. Waited in the "waiting room" for the entire duration of my appointment time & no provider logged on. read more
