I've been seeing Dr. Belaga for several years. He is very helpful and kind, and goes out of his way to help his patients.

I normally hesitate to write a bad review about someone's business but I feel that it is a necessary PSA to warn the public - DO NOT GO TO DR BELAGA. I am 25 years old and about a year ago, I started suffering from headaches every day, all day long. After a couple of months trying to manage this pain, I decided to visit a neurologist and found Dr. Belaga online. Out of my ~20 min visit with the Dr, he spend 15 mins complaining to me about politics. I could have overlooked this had it not been for his inadequate and dangerous diagnosis. Dr. Belaga looked at my head/neck for 2 mins and determined that I had a mysterious neck injury. He told me I could take up to 4 aleve each and every day until the pain went away and gave me a neck brace. He then prescribed me a narcotic in case the aleve was not adequate and referred me to a physical therapist. After months of taking aleve which has permanently damaged my stomach and wasting time and money on physical therapy, I went to a different neurologist for a second opinion. They easily and immediately diagnosed me with chronic migraines and laid out a treatment plan that was actually beneficial to me. Every subsequent doctor I have seen has been appalled at the way Dr Belaga handled my case (especially prescribing me narcotics for migraine symptoms). Dr. Belaga is an irresponsible doctor who should not be practicing medicine. I urge you to look elsewhere if you are searching for a neurologist. I spent 6 months in constant pain and have long-standing negative side effects from the treatment Dr. Belaga prescribed. read more

Fantastic! Dr. Belaga is a miracle migraine worker. I have suffered from migraines since childhood and promise you, have sought treatment from THE BEST headache specialists in this country. There is nothing I haven't tried, except Botox. My headache specialist in PA, told me to give it a whirl. I found Dr. Belaga, and immediately LOVED him. Not only is he a skilled Neurologist, but he is articulate, understands the sensitive nature of this disease state (doesn't think we are crazy and should just go for a psych evaluation), and has a bedside manner that most MD's could learn from! I've had 4 rounds of Botox treatment now, and I am shocked at what a profound difference it has made in the quality of my life. I still take medications daily and acutely...but the frequency and severity of my migraines is significantly improved. The improvement is so dramatic that my friends and family can tell when it's time for me to go back in for another round (as the intensity & frequency returns). I honestly can't praise Dr. Belaga enough. It may take a time or two to find out exactly which locations work best for you (base of skull, neck, scalp, TMJ area...), but once we hit our stride, it was incredible. I have suffered chronic, daily headaches for years and have tried many different ways to treat it. Most PCPs prescribe pain medication, which is not a real option for someone with a headache a day, and dietary approaches didn't do much. It's nice to go somewhere where your headaches are taken seriously. Dr. Belaga gave me a shot of imitrex in his office when I went to see him (naturally my head was pounding when I went in) and made me stay in the office for about 10 minutes afterwards to deal with the effects. I've yet to see if his treatment will work, but I'm pretty confident he can deal with it if id doesn't. He is old school in his demeanor, and if you need a more hippie type of doctor, he might not be the head doc for you. read more

Dr Belaga has taken truly thoughtful care of me for years. He is actually the first doctor to diagnose me with migraine- I thought I had just tension headache previously. We've tried a combination of different medications and found a daily med + Botox + occasional triptan is the best management for my chronic headache issues. My headache frequency and intensity has decreased greatly. Dr Belaga and his office staff really care. They are kind, accommodating, and flexible. I have been seeing Dr. Belaga for three years now. My experience with him has been very professional and he is the rare doctor who really does care. He spends more time with one patient than most doctors these days. And I have seen a lot of doctors. He seems both open minded to helping the patient try new treatment ideas and up to date on current options to recommend. I read a review that dinged him for emailing test results (which is an option you sign up for) and I feel that is just silly. One phone call and they would have started mailing them. I had a bad experience with this doctor in fall 2007, mainly due to poor bedside manner, and an offensive comment. He "gave up" fairly quickly when he was unable to correctly diagnose and treat my medical problem. The next neurologist I was seen by was a lot more creative in their thinking, and they were successful in their care, and my health rapidly improved. I do not recommend him, and I agree with the person who suggests its time for him to retire. I am still upset about the comment he made to me, it was unprofessional and almost deterred me from seeking alternate care. After reading all of the wonderful reviews here, I decided to try botox with Dr. Belaga. I've had chronic headaches for 30 years, so I'm willing to try anything! Dr. Belaga gave me the injections and as I was walking out of his office he said, "oh, and if you can't hold your head up, call me and I'll give you a collar." Wait. WHAT? If he had told me this before he gave me the injections, I would NOT have agreed to this treatment. Here I am 9 days after the treatment and I cannot hold my head up. Not only that, I have more pain than before because muscles in my neck are trying to compensate for those that were paralyzed by the botox. So, needless to say I am not a happy camper. The good news? I have been going to Dr Belaga's office for a few years now. His office is great about handling insurance and it's always been easy to get an appt (even same day). Dr. Belaga is the person to see if you're having major migraines. I have tried conservative treatments including chiropractic, but sometimes, you need a good MD to handle more complicated issues and more frequent headaches. It's also very easy to get RX renewals. The staff was apologetic and the doctor was super unprofessional. He went on and on and on about government regulations and diagnostic codes that we had to agree on...talked about how we should have dropped hydrogen bombs on Afghanistan...and coached me on what to say should insurance regulators call to discuss my case. In total, it was 15 minutes of yapping about the government, 4 minutes of checking my reflexes, then 1 minute to explain he couldn't treat my headaches without my coming back another day because he had to get authorization (something that should have been done before I even came in). I would never feel comfortable coming back to this doctor for an actual treatment. He didn't seem to care at all about me and was too absorbed with his paranoid and obsessive thoughts with the government to give proper care to anyone. What a horrible experience - there are so many great doctors in this city, you should steer clear of this one and see one who truly cares about their patients. read more

To judge from the other reviews, your experience with Dr. Belaga may depend on what you're seeing him for. Those seeing him for help with headaches appear to have had positive experiences. Unfortunately for me, I was not seeing him about headaches. I recently had two seizures, and was referred to Dr. Belaga by my GP. After telling him what had happened, and what medications I was taking, he prescribed Lyrica. I asked if I could still take haloperidol for my nausea. His response? "Well, if you need to take it, what are you going to do?" That isn't an answer. (Haloperidol can decrease the threshold for seizures, which is why I asked about it specifically.) He ordered what seemed to be the appropriate tests (EEG, MRI). I had the EEG two Fridays ago. Last week, I got a call from Dr. Belaga's office telling me that my EEG had been approved and I should call to schedule it. ???? I had already had the EEG the Friday before and told them so. Usually the results are sent to the doctor. Not this time. His secretary (who I must say, was very nice) told me I needed to call and request to have the results faxed to Dr. Belaga's office. I did so that day. That afternoon, I sat down to check my email. There was a message from Dr. Belaga: "Your EEG confirms a pattern of epilepsy, so you will need to take medication without fail. The MRI results will tells us if there is anything else that needs to be done. I'll let you know about those results when they come in. Thanks." That's the email in its' entirety. Maybe I'm just old fashioned but that strikes me as unprofessional and inappropriate. This is the first and only time I've had a doctor give me test results by email. If it were something like "Your test results were completely normal." I could overlook it. But this? If I'm reading this correctly, he's telling me I have epilepsy. I have many questions. If he had called me like a normal doctor, I could have asked those questions. As it is, I emailed him back. In response to a paragraph with several questions, I receive this single sentence reply: "The EEG suggests that you have a problem irrespective of any medications you might have taken or from which you had withdrawn." He sent me another email, this one positive: "Your MRI was completely normal. So, there is nothing else for you to do but to continue to take the medication. That's actually pretty encouraging. Your life should be quite normal, as long as you take the prescription. Thanks." Yesterday, I called my GP at 9:01 and asked for a referral to another neurologist. read more

It's clear he's getting kickbacks from Botox. Other neurologists typically provide several options for migraine, but I had to ask for my usual prescription to Naratriptan because all he could talk about was Botox. I'm upset that I had to pay him for what felt like a sales pitch. When I inquired about the risks of Botox injections in the jaw or neck, he said 'you might have pain holding up your head or chewing, but it's only for 3 months and we won't know unless you try it, so just try it'. Scary. If I did want free Botox, I'd probably go to someone more trust-worthy. He might get paid by the ounce, and so I might end up with a gallon of it in my head. Beyond the Botox, while this guy might be educated about Migraine, he didn't share any new info and wasn't keen to discuss triggers or new studies, like other neurologists typically do. (Migraine attacks can be reduced with simple dietary changes, supplements, exercise, stress reduction, meditation, etc...) Getting more info on those factors would have made this visit more worthwhile. Oh and he gave me a 15 minute speech on what's wrong with Obama - uncalled for. Dr. Belaga volunteered very little information regarding his findings and diagnosis, was very short in his answers to my questions. Dr. Belaga has terrible bed-side manner and you have to probe him really hard to get any answers. He is one of the old style doctors who just doles out medication to his patients and doesn't really care about how you feel or what you understand about your treatment. In fact, the last time I saw Dr. Belaga, he gave me a prescription for a fentanyl (morphine) patch which my pharmacist refused to give me because it was only for people who had already built up a tolerance to the drug and she said if she gave me the prescription, her license and my life would be on the line... I later looked this drug up online and found all the instances of death that happen from people who use this drug without having used opioids before (aka me). In sum, you are risking your health and safety if you see Dr. Belaga. I specifically signed up for Yelp just so I could rate this jerk. BE CAREFUL, please!!! read more

As getting Botox approved from your insurance can be very difficult, his assistant is apparently very good at getting approval. However if you are like me and don't want Botox shots. or already know they don't work for you, then see someone else. I found him totally unhelpful outside of that. Oh migraines!!! Sometimes they are not there at all, but sometimes they are so bad you wish you were dead. You fell really bad. ER trips, IV injections, huge ER bills. Ibuprofen not working at all. You wake up at night with a horrible headache. That was all me until I met with Dr. Belaga. He listened to everything I had to complain about! Very patiently!!! My treatment plan worked wonderfully for me-I actually forgot about my migraines for few and LONG! 6-8 months. Then one night I woke up with horrible migraine and the whole night I could only think of Dr. Belaga. Called Cecilia, the office manager the next day and next thing you know I am pain-free again!!!!!!!! I can enjoy a glass of wine and wake up pain free. I can eat foods and not hug my toilet. If you have a headache he sounds like your man, anything else run the other way and look for another doctor. At this point I don't even consider him a doctor. Doctor's are there to help and figure out what's wrong. NOT THIS GUY! I went to see him with a family member and he was literally pushing us out the door. I had to keep putting words into his mouth to keep the conversation going. Our appointment was five minutes long. He gave us a weak diagnosis that he didn't put any thought into and it ended up being incorrect. Shortly after the visit, the patient was hospitalized for close to three months with a rare disorder that another team of doctor's had to find. Do yourself a favor and find another doctor. read more

What a super kind an compassionate dr! I wish all doctors were like him; what a great place healthcare would be!!! I went to see him for severe head, neck, shoulder, and face pain and he gave me botox to help with the TMJ, cervical distonia, and migraines. And while the 1st round wasn't as successful as I'd hope for, he assured me that it takes several rounds of injections for some people. So I'm going to try again because I believe and trust him. When I was in misery one day, his office got me in immediately and Dr. Belaga offered a shot of pain medicine to take some of the pain away. I guess his medical knowledge was on par and his staff was helpful, but after briefly glossing over my symptoms and assuring me that any further tests would not find anything because I looked like a "young healthy man", he went on a political tirade about the "left" and the war on terror. I would be remiss if I didn't take time out of my schedule to acknowledge the great care I have been receiving from Dr. Gary Belaga. After 3 1/2 years of finding no relief from my headaches and after many scans, various doctor's appointments, physical therapy, food diaries, mattress/pillow modifications and exercise, a friend received an advertisement from Dr. Belaga's office and passed it along to me. He was my last hope, I wanted to give up. I called, made the appointment and was greeted by friendly staff and a caring and compassionate doctor. He listened intently and determined where my headaches where coming from and gave me Botox shots in the shoulder, neck and forehead. Within days I could see light at the end of the tunnel, relief was on it way. HEADACHES vanished!!! He set up a treatment plan to see him every 3 months for additional shots in the same area. This physician is as good as it gets. The medical care he provides is comprehensive and his bedside manner is one of a truly caring individual. I had been in a serious car accident and suffered from severe and debilitating migraines for years before being referred to Dr. Belaga. My life revolved around managing the pain and symptoms of migraines which I experienced in some form most days. Prior to this visit, every treatment that had been prescribed to decrease my pain and grant me a suitable quality of life had failed. Needless to say I was very skeptical that anyone could help. During my first visit I met Cecelia, the office manager and her assistant Gino. I was in so much pain when I arrived that I could not stop crying. Cecelia, seeing me crying, escorted me to the back office where she consoled me and diligently prepared all the necessary paperwork. (Did I mention that between Cecelia and Gino I was able to see Dr. B on an emergency basis THAT DAY? Cecelia worked a miracle to obtain the necessary insurance approval so that I could receive treatment.) Shortly thereafter Dr. Belaga met with me. He was thorough in his assessment of my medical needs and proceeded with a treatment that to this day has increased my quality of life SIGNIFICANTLY. No joke. I can honestly tell you that after the first visit my quality of life improved so drastically that I called friends and family crying...not due to pain, but due to jubilation over being pain-free for the first time in years. I had been suffering for so long that I had forgotten what it felt like to be migraine free. Those of you who suffer from symptoms of chronic migraines can relate to be the joy of being symptom-free...feels like the best days of your life! This is the first Yelp review I have ever written and chose to do so because my experience with Doctor Belaga was beyond awful. I went to see him for migraines after previously seeing a neurologist in Colorado (who was AMAZING) because I needed to find a local neurologist to continue my migraine treatment. The instant he walked in I wanted to leave right away. I got a horrible and uncomfortable feeling from the start. His bedside manners were awful. I felt like I was put in charge of running the appointment and he just awkwardly sat there asking what I would like to do. I felt uncomfortable because that is not my job; it is his job to find out what is going on and give me options on ways he can treat me. He completely put down the treatment plan the neurologist in Colorado came up with. He said he could order the medicine she wanted me to get through an IV, but that the medication would be over a $1,000. Later when I returned to get proper treatment with the neurologist in Colorado I found out the medicine is actually around $30. Just a slight difference in pricing. After this he just started sending all of these prescriptions to my pharmacist that he wanted me to take. He did not explain why he chose them or what they would do or when to take them, etc. I felt completely lost and that he did not answer the questions I had. He just seemed to want me out of his office. From the amazing neurologist I saw in Colorado I was expecting him to ask questions about my migraine and give me options and explain the options and come up with a treatment plan. Instead I just got a bunch of prescriptions shoved down my throat. At this point I was in pain from the migraine so he said I can give you an injection of pain meds to make it go away. I agreed to it. Within 5 minutes of the injection I was violently ill throwing up, sweat, and crying in the bathroom. I am aware that he has no control over how a patient reacts to the medicine he gives them, however, you would think an adequate doctor who give injections would have Benadryl on hand in case someone does have a reaction. Not only did he not have Benadryl and didn't send someone out to get some ASAP, he just left me in the bathroom sick as could be for an hour and a half while he WENT AND SAW ANOTHER PATIENT. The lady at the front desk took care of me and was great. She did however ask me if I had Benadryl at home which I could not believe. She asked (as I am puking on the bathroom floor) if I could make it home to get some Benadryl because that is what I needed. I finally asked her how in the world she expects me to do this when I can't stop puking for more than 5 minutes. Finally they called in for Benadryl and after an hour and a half gave me the shot. This was completely unacceptable to me. I have never been so badly treated by a doctor or felt more uncomfortable and uncared for in my life. I will say that after the Benadryl kicked in they did drive me home which was the first and only decent thing he did. Needless to say I ended up home feeling 10x worse than before the appointment. I flew back to Colorado to be properly treated by Janice Miller, who is an amazing neurologist and represents how a doctor should treat their patients. read more
