I came in for a dental cleaning and later received a bill for $645: $195 for "Prophylaxis-adult" $225 for "Intra-oral complete series" (X-rays) $225 for "Complete oral eval-new" I was not informed of these charges in advance. In my experience, a cleaning with X-rays and exam has never cost more than $250 at other dentists in San Francisco. The hygienist mentioned she works at multiple offices, and initially introduced herself on behalf of another dentist. So for this excessive cost you are getting a cleaning by someone who is not a full-time employee. During my visit, the dentist strongly encouraged me to get composite veneers, using sales tactics that felt inappropriate for a medical setting. For example, he commented, "If I were to look at your teeth I would think they are women's teeth." While I understand cosmetic dentistry is an option, I believe such decisions should be presented neutrally and left to the patient. I chose Dr. Arabatyan due to quick availability, but my experience did not meet expectations. Edit: Dr. Arabatyan replied below that most of this is covered by insurance. This deflects from the main issue. Yes, it is covered, but dental insurance has a maximum spend. This eats up a decent chunk for a routine visit. I do not care about this bill or whether insurance covers it not - I am here to call out bad behavior by the doctor in terms of pushing cosmetic procedures, and over-billing for routine cleaning/x-rays. Dr. Arabatyan is an artist. And a gentleman. If you need cosmetic or functional fixes to your teeth, he is worth every penny and more. I can't imagine any other dentist I have has who I would trust more with my smile. Doc fixed both of my chipped central incisors - ruined by decades of biting my nails. The quality of the care here seems fine, although expect to be barraged with upsells even while you're in the chair. My primary problem with them is that when I made the appointment for a cleaning I told them my insurance carrier (anthem) & asked if my cleaning would be covered. My coverage allowed me one free cleaning a year. Dr Arabatyan's office assured me it was. Then after my cleaning & exam was completed I was told it was going to cost $180. They explained that anthem only pays x amount for cleanings, & they charge considerably more then anthem covers. I asked repeatedly why I was told my cleaning would be covered when it was not. Never got a satisfactory answer. They eventually knocked it down to $130 and wouldn't budge, threatened collections. Their message seemed to be that I should have known how much my insurance paid dentist for cleanings vs what dr Arabatyan charged. I feel I was misled by a staff that either didnt know or didn't care whether I was covered. They just wanted the business. From the pressure they put on you to get additional procedures, I think generating revenue is higher priority for them. Exercise caution before making an appointment. Ensure you're really covered and be ready for the sales pitches. read more

I had my first time experience there and I won't be going back. I had a good experience with the front desk/phone staff and they helped with everything, including confirming that my insurance was covered in their office. The doctor then did cleaning and spent a lot of time telling me all the things he could do to improve (& he could do it at a cost). I would have been fine with it except then insurance didn't cover my basic cleaning & I called back and was told it was my fault and that I should have checked my exact bin number, they accept my insurance carrier but not my specific plan. Later they tried to follow up to set up an appointment for one of the add-on upsells. No thank you. read more

Dr. Gary is very friendly and appears to be quite skilled. However the same cannot be said for his front office staff. I purchased a groupon for teeth whitening last year, but the staff put the wrong time on the appointment schedule and then refused to acknowledge the error and hassled me over changing the time. When I arrived I had to complete a ridiculous amount of paperwork for a simple cosmetic whitening. It was then recommended that I pay an additional fee for a treatment that would reduce the potential pain. The results of the whitening process were fairly mediocre. My teeth look ok but not as white as other people who have had this done. Not sure if they water down the formula or just didn't do a good job in applying the paste. But the most annoying thing is getting bombarded with marketing emails (that I didn't request and then being signed up for a cleaning that I didn't request. When I tried to reply to the email to cancel the unrequested appointment the replies bounced. Not a very good way to treat your customers. So in sum, I cannot recommend this establishment due to very customer unfriendly practices. read more

I overheard a conversation between the doctor and the receptionist asking how much money I had left in my insurance. After the receptionist responded that there were still funds to spend, doctor Arabatyan "realized" I needed an old filing replaced that had only been placed 3 years earlier. I left at that moment and never returned. I wouldn't place my trust here, you only have one set of teeth as an adult, don't let someone ruin them so they can make money. read more
