He used to be good im told but not anymore and I agree.Took my truck in for a 40$ special oil change and total lookover. He decided my truck was in too bad of shape so he didn't bother to give me the oil change I signed for. Charged me 80$ to put in my window which he broke in the process. He should be retired. I was driving my 1968 Ford F350 truck across the country from San Jose to Boston when it broke down and had to be towed to Elko, Nevada. The towing company (Lostra Brothers) recommended Gary Konakis Automotive as a place where they understood this vintage of vehicle. Gary listened to my tale of woe and fit my truck into his schedule promptly. He was able to quickly trouble shoot the problem and had me back on the road in a couple hours. I had no more problems for the rest of the trip thanks to Gary. It's nice to find a mechanic who can actually troubleshoot problems and fix the root cause instead of just replacing parts until the vehicle runs again. My truck had this recurring problem every 1000 miles or so that other shops were not able to diagnose. They just put in new points and sent me on my way. Gary was able to determine that a coil/resistor/points mismatch caused the points to burn up every 1000 miles. I've now driven it 6000 miles since he made the repair and it's still running like a top. He saved my bacon and I am eternally grateful. read more

Let me tell you this is the guy and the place to go. I blew an oil line up in Jarbidge and by the time I got into Elko, nobody could look at my truck for over a week and there were no rental cars available in the entire town! They were able to pull the line off and get me in contact with a hose creation place. They took the hose off and had to create 2 tools in order to do so. I got the hose made and they had me on the road by 10am the next morning. Great people, great service and they went way above and beyond for me and I was from out of town. Went in with AC issues and the truck was diagnosed as having a possible leak I was charged 260 bucks and told to bring it back in if I was still having problems,three days later it was back to blowing hot air again so I took it back and they said the compressor was bad and it would cost 1,000 bucks to fix and this new diagnosis was 60 bucks. Jesse James at least wore a mask when he robbed people but these guys don't even do that. Unless you like to pay inflated fees for a vehicle repair do yourself a favor and find someone else,I would give them a zero rating if I could! Yelp do us all a favor and make your website to include a ZERO rating for bad actors like this! read more

Is it really necessary to overcharge JUST FOR PARTS by $600 ??? I got an estimate after breaking down on my way across the country. On the way back I had to practically beg the lady on the phone to include my VIN number on the estimate!!!! I had to pick it up later after they were closed because I wouldn't make it in time to walk in. After I did research on the parts needed and realized he was over charging SUBSTANTIALLY, I ordered them myself to have them sent there - both camshafts, timing belt replacement kit for a Volvo - and he refused service to me and gave me one day to move my car. and I was 500 miles away. He estimated 1500 - $750 for parts, which I found for under $200.. He's a total jerk. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. I had my nissan xtera towed here and was given an estimate to have it fixed. Out of necessity or desperation I agreed to the price. When I went to pick it up I was told something else had happened to it and it was again not running. The cost this time would be an additional $4,000. I told them I don't have that kind of money, especially on top of the nearly $2000 original charge and tried to work with them in any way, even asking them to keep my car for parts or metal and write off the balance. I had bought the car for 8k; the repairs were impractical. I now needed all of my money for a down payment on a new car. They were extremely rude and short with me. They treated me terribly. They made it nearly impossible to set up a payment plan for the original balance, refused to release the car until it was payed in full and threatened to charge a high storage fed while it sat there. They served me with papers the day I was moving to another city for a new teaching job. They had my wages garnished to the fullest extent and took $600 from each of my first four paychecks. This was extremely difficult as I had just moved and the last check garnished was December- no Christmas for my two daughters that year. These people are terrible. After talking to people around town I found several other young, single female friends tell similar stories of being duped or nearly being swindled out of large amounts of money for unnecessary repairs. These people are terrible, rude, greedy, lying, unprofessional, creepy, backwoods, hillbillies. Trite characters from a bad movie. read more

This staff was so helpful when I was in a jam stuck up in Elko. After a 10-hour trip to consolidate some legal matters in town, my car went caput and they not only took the time out of their busy day to see what the problem was, but diagnosed it for free! They were right on the money too with what was wrong with it when I had to take it to another mechanic after that who was one of a rare few in town to specialize in fixing my vehicle make and model. On Sunday, December 23, 2012, our 21-year-old son was driving his Subaru from Park City, Utah, to our home in California for Christmas. Unfortunately, the car completely broke down on Interstate 80 just west of Elko. The tow truck driver (from Lostra Brothers Towing in Elko) recommended Gary Konakis Auto Repair, so the car was towed there. Of course, it was Sunday, AND the next 2 days were holidays. While our son was able to catch a ride from a friend who was also going home for Christmas, the car had to be left in Elko. There was no answer machine, so a note was left explaining the presence of a strange car at Konakis's, hoping Mr Konakis was a good guy and would look at the car without even meeting or knowing the character of its owner, who would be hundreds of miles away by the time he read the note! Well, not only did Gary Konakis spend a LOT of time repairing the car, he moved the car inside the garage every night to protect the contents which our son had to abandon. Gary advised us of the repair progress and cost and kept the car at his facility until our son could be reunited with his car, over a month later. Every traveler should know that if they need emergency repairs done while passing through Elko, they surely have a friend in Gary Konakis! Thank you, Gary! read more
