Wow, I dont even know who this review might even be for. I'm sure everyone in Owensboro knows this diner. I just tried it two days back to back and oooooh am I a fan! I can't believe I'd waited so long. First of all the service is suuuuper friendly. I love the old school decor and the walls lined with the history of this place. Now the food. I tried a double cheeseburger, tator tots, a ham and cheese sandwich, patty melt, AND a chili burger within a span of two days. I guess I'm just intrigued by what gives this joint its longevity. Perhaps if I eat here everyday, I too will absorb some of this longevity. I dunno if fast food works that way. All of the food I've mentioned is super good. The tots are crispy, the burger is tasty and well proportioned, and the ham and cheese sandwich was carefully prepared by a true expert. The patty melt though. I can't even recall the last time I ate a patty melt. But it came out piping hot which I really appreciate about this diner. I can hear the meat sizzling as I wait. A few minutes later, I receive a sandwich with bread beautifully buttered to perfection. I take a bite and THEN decide to peek at its contents. My heart melts like the cheese in this sandwich. Why do I feel this way? Double cheese. She made my patty melt with slices of cheese on BOTH sides of the patty. And it had the delicious grilled onions just kicking yumminess into each bite! But DOUBLE cheese was not expected and to experience this made me happy. I am proud of accomplishing the act of eating this delicious sandwich. I think I should try bigger tasks. I discovered Gary's on my hunt for Owensboro Burger Week. I went by twice and they were out of their Bourbon Slam Burger. This is a classic fast food burger place that is really small and I wanted to come back and try. I finally got it the third time though. The Bourbon Slam had pepper jack cheese, bacon jam made with Bourbon and Coke, and slaw on the side. I felt like there wasn't enough jam on the burger. The jam gave it a very subtle sweet heat taste and coupled with the pepper jack cheese and the big fluffy bun, it was a pretty good fast food burger. The hamburger meat was what you would expect from a fast food burger joint. Slaw came on the side and it was vinegar based with light on the vinegar. The slaw did add a little something to the burger but wasn't good enough to eat by itself. The fries were a joke. They were the shoestring fries that you can barely hold. I should have known better and went with tots. My sweet tea was refreshingly sweet. They also do milkshakes but I passed on it because they are made with soft serve. I prefer milkshakes with hand dipped ice cream. It's a very small place with not much seating or parking. But it was very busy the whole time I was there especially the drive-thru. I wouldn't mind eating here again but I'm not going to go out of my way to eat at Gary's again. read more

Got the Itacane burger and it was good would give it a 3 and a half. Good bun great taste.

I live just down the street, and for longer than I'd care to admit, I had been meaning to try a "The Best Burger in Owensboro". I finally got around to it on a weeknight. The place was clean, and all the staff were friendly and charming. They set me up right with their standard burger (a double please), dressed. It made it the short walk home and was excellent with an ice cold Dr. Pepper. Keep it up! I'll be back for onion rings. read more

Prices and food are good. Hung out here often back in high school. Plenty of options to try, both for meals and desserts.

My grandmother and I stopped here Friday because she wanted a "real" burger and in her opinion, that is not what she received. She said the bun was hard and cold and the meat did not taste "real". I really enjoyed the shoestring fries (my favorite!!!) but my "grilled" ham and cheese tasted like it was microwaved and did not appear to be grilled at all. The girl at the counter was very nice in answering all our questions but it is a bit odd that at 630pm on a Friday, there was only 1 other customer in here. Gary's is a very small, friendly, personable establishment. The food is always made hot and fresh. So there will be a small quick wait. All the things on the menu are awesome. Never had a bad experience here. read more

I don't know if yesterday was an off-day for this restaurant but it was the worst experience I've had in years buying takeout. After paying at the first window, we were in the line of cars for 20-25 minutes. No explanation was given, no apology, no offer of return of money. When we finally got our food, the buns were hard as rocks. We had ordered two cheeseburgers--one with everything and one with everything but onion and mayo. What we got was one burger with everything but mayo and one with everything but onions. The fries were shoestrings which is certainly the restaurant's prerogative but it is my least favorite variety. I will not be going back. I remember this place from years ago when it had a different name. At that time it was a wonderful place. read more

Pulled up first car in line ordered a chilli dog and a milkshake it cost almost $8 then I waited over 10 minutes only to receive a cold nasty chili dog with the bun split down the middle of the bottom. I won't be back ! read more

Friendly staff great service and the food is amazing. The prices are great for the food you get. Love the double bacon cheeseburger thru the garden with tater tots is my favorite. I love this place. Great Dinning atmosphere. Great burgers and tots. They treat you like family. The only downside is very little seating . I wish the fabulious gary would make the place bigger. But until then ill keep going . LOVE IT LOVE IT read more
