This went from a five star sandwich to a one star sandwich there prosciutto and mozzarella sandwich was the best and now it's the worst you can't even find the prosciutto on the sandwich you're so little. He was out of mozzarella, so he exchanged it for provolone but there was no provolone on that sandwich. It was just a bunch of bread and lettuce. S he was making it.,I picked out two flavored vinegar bottles clearly labeled $6.each but when I got to the register, they were $25 each. I guess this is the way they sell stuff by cheating people. We come here often to see if they have anything new in stock. They have a great selection of beers, wine, liquor - even rarities with competitive prices, and nonalcoholic beers. They have a huge cheese selection with very knowledgeable staff. They even make sandwiches - my husband ordered the pastrami sandwich 2 weeks ago and he said it was good. We ordered the baked Brie for Thanksgiving - it was okay. It included directions which was great but they didn't mention if it needed to be thawed. They used to have wine and cheese samples on Saturdays. We haven't had any luck recently catching the samples. I used to like to try the samples since I buy cheeses often for charcuteries. They have an excellent selection of gifts/ chocolates for a variety of occasions (weddings, holidays, birthdays). read more

It's soo delicious on a sandwich! All the items are arranged to catch your eye! The Madison location is much smaller than their Wayne location. However, it has good customer service. I picked up a cheese basket in the Madison location on 12/24 as a gift. I had called on 12/22 to place an order of an assortment of 2 hard cheeses and 1 soft cheese and paid in advance. After picking it up I realized I was given two variations of cheddar. There are so many hard cheeses to offer, that was quite disappointing but what made worse was when I called the store. Upon questioning why would this not include a Gouda or Manchego or dozens of other options besides cheddar I was told that most of the pre-packaged cheeses are only cheddar and due to an abundance of orders there was no time to include cheese from behind the counter. My response was simply "how unfortunate for the recipient." I don't think this is an acceptable answer from a gourmet cheese shop. Knowing this is the busiest week of the year, maybe cutting and prepping in advance would be a good idea. The selection of wine here is pretty decent here and I'm no conosueir so when there are aisle and aisles of wine it checks out for me. There is a selection of other beer and liquor here perhaps not to the level of a dedicated liquor store but enough to grab some favorites for the wine skippers at your party. The layoutnof the store is nice with a wine tasting area and a huge cheese counter for the real fancy drinkers who like wine and cheese. This isn't a little cheese counter either, think the supermarket deli, but everything is replaced with cheese. The staff and check out clerks were ok and the prices seemed ok with specials promoted on certain drinks. Its definitely the fanciest Wine place I've seen and wouldn't really expect less for the area. read more

Gary's Wine & Marketplace has changed the game. And by changed the game I mean that I now might need to driving up to Madison every time I need to stock up on wine, beer, cheese, speciality groceries, gifts and so much more. They have a massive selection of all of the above and it's basically a hybrid liquor store / gift shop / cheese and speciality foods shop. AKA everything one could need. Wine prices are fair and selection is huge. Any and all types of wine that you could ever want. Was able to snag bottles for 9.99 that I normally see for 12/13 dollars elsewhere. I was only shopping for wine, but there is also an extensive selection of beer and liquor. I purchased something like ten quality bottles for a work event and walked away spending less than 100 dollars. There were cheese samples everywhere. If you have no self control you could easily sample upwards of 20 cheeses. And not just your standard cheddar or parmesan. I sampled smoked cheeses, cheese infused with chives and onions, horseradish cheese and even pumpkin flavored cheese. There is also a counter with different meats and spreads and a variety of other packaged goods like crackers, jams, olives and pickles. If you are looking to make a cheese and meat board this is a one stop shop. Everything is high quality, so it's a great pick if you are looking to entertain and impress your guests. With the holidays coming up you'll definitely want to keep Gary's top of mind. And... speaking of holidays. The gift selection here is insane. You can customize your own basket and they had tons of other adorable giftables like cheese plates, glassware and wedding gifts. If I lived close by I'd definitely come back for all of my gifting needs. You really can't go wrong by giving someone a wine and cheese basket (hint hint). I live a bit far to come back for the every day shop, but if I'm in the area for work or just need to restock on some wine I'd go to Gary's again in a heartbeat. What can I say - I have been coming here for more years than I care to admit - and I plan on coming here for as long as I can enjoy a bottle of wine, a cocktail, cheese and pate. Their prices on liquors (vodka, gin, rum, etc.) are really good. Wine prices are also good - especially during their inventory clearance sales a few times a year! They don't seem to have competitive prices on beer - compared with places like Bottle King. I only get the occasional craft beer or unusual beer at Gary's. We love trying their cheeses - and usually end up buying something we sample. (Or, we remember it for the next time we are picking up cheese.) They have a great gourmet section - including wonderful pates and other things. If you haven't been here yet - WHY NOT? And if you ever need a specific kind of wine, or need help picking out a new wine or something to go with a specific meal - they can help! They really are good at what they do! read more

Love love love this market. Definitely the place to hit when stocking up for the holidays, or on any occasion. The wine selection is huge! And easy to navigate. Not only that, you can get personalized service and recommendations like you would in a smaller wine shop - definitely a plus. They have a large cheese counter, again with great service. I picked up a 5-yr old aged Gouda, Drunken Goat cheese, and a fabulous triple-creme Brie that they were sampling at the counter. (Later, a tragic moment occurred when my mother-in-law's 2 Bichons ate the entire Brie while we were having our family picture taken! Arrrgh! But that's another story...) Not only does Gary's carry an array of sweet and savory sundries, as well as gifts for the wine and food enthusiast, there is an entire British foods section. Heaven. And again, the service...I was standing in the wine section waiting for my husband and brother-in-law, with what must have been a bored look on my face - and one of the kind salespeople asked me if I needed anything. I mentioned that I had not had a cup of coffee all day (it was 4pm and I was probably near tears) and he took me right over to the coffee section where they brewed me a fresh pot and later, that same salesperson came to check and make sure that I was feeling better! Now that is small-town, non-chain, holiday spirit. Whenever I'm looking for something specific instead of just re-filling the fridge, I tend to forego my regular liquor store and go to Gary's. The beer, wine and liquor selection at Gary's is way beyond what any other place in the area has in stock, and if they don't have it...ask and they will get it for you. Every time we stop in at Gary's we're finding new wines, craft beers, or SOMETHING in the liquor section that comes home with us...in addition to whatever we came in for in the first place. I can't praise the selection enough in all three areas...the only place I've found bigger selections is when I've gone to a true specialty store that is ONLY wine or ONLY beer (like Beer World in Kingston, NY). The one downside to Gary's is...well, it ain't cheap. You're paying a premium for all these choices...and probably the location. Cases of beer (good beer) are higher than in most places...and the single bottle craft beers are also very pricey. To compensate, however, I suggest watching for Gary's sales - the price drop is usually pretty steep and gets you to well below what you see elsewhere. I suggest joining the 'club' for notices about sales and events. One of the great things about Gary's is when they are doing free tastings...nothing like coming in wanting to try something 'new' and being able to taste a few wines before buying them... I'm also a fan of the gourmet section which has an extensive cheese selection (and the staff is always helpful in matching good cheese with your alcohol of choice), sandwiches, and prepared foods, etc. The staff here is very helpful and courteous - and always service with a smile. read more

Love the wine and cheese here, but today they featured Bulleit Bourbon. The joke of it was they had a trailer out front pretending to hand out samples. Ok.. so what's up with that!? The answer. We cannot serve you out here but go inside...So, we go inside for a tasting as we can't do this outside. Once inside, no one and I mean no one is at the sample bar for over 20 minutes. We even asked to have someone paged as the employees here are very helpful and there was a line that formed for the tasting. In any event...Everybody left, since no one came to pour samples. But, you could get an etched glass with their name on it, lol. Once outside, I told the Bulleit reps by the trailer that no one is serving samples, and his reply was Oh, that's interesting! They dont, as there has been a few things they didnt have i was looking for, but they will have most common wines and a good amount of uncommon wines as well. They also have a selection of cheese, on par with what you would see at the west orange wholefoods. Some items arent always prices, i find what is sterotypical is true. I bought small package of dried fruit. It cost me 8 dollars, and when i asked the price they told me after i swiped my card. Kind of annoying. Since the onset of Covid I have been ordering from Gary's Madison regularly and their delivery (to Short Hills) has been consistently excellent: typically within an hour or two. Their prices are fair, their selection broad and their service is excellent. I used to buy from Wine Library, which is close by, but when I enquired about delivery, which I have frankly become used to, I was told it could take a couple of days. We love shopping at Gary's. They have a great variety of wines, cheese, beers and spirits.We used to also like Wine Library however they seem to have transitioned into a high end wine store while Gary's has a broader range of inexpensive and pricey wines. We are not fussy wine snobs but once in a while we find something we really like somewhere, then after a while it is gone. So that's when we go to Gary's, and either they have what we are looking for or they can order it. Most of the people who work there knowledgeable and very helpful. Sure the parking lot is tight but if you are lucky enough to find a space it will be close to the store. read more

Service here is great. The employees are always busy, but make great eye contact and always r Ash to help. They have a great selection of Argentinian, French, and South African wines as well as a good variety of craft beers. They also have an extensive cheese and small bites area where you can literally find anything. My favorite thing about this place is that everything is laid out well,easy to find, and they provide wine spectator and other notes to guide you on your wine selection and so you won't be searching for a long time. My only wish is that they would provide more artisanal and higher quality chocolates. ary's has a great selection of wines, beers, and spirits; the problems start when you go to pay for them. On my last two visits, their reader couldn't read my credit card chip, then it didn't want to read the magnetic stripe either. On my last visit, 3/16/21, the clerks managed to charge my credit card twice, but I left the store without them catching it. There was no clue on the receipt, so I didn't catch it either. Twenty minutes after I got home the 'phone rang. It was the fraud prevention desk of my credit card company. Their representative told me that they had detected "suspicious activity" on my account: two transactions for the same amount at Gary's. If I have gone shopping at any other store after leaving Gary's, my card would have been denied. After I got things straightened out with the credit card people, I called the manager of the Madison store, Dave Thomas, but he wasn't available, so I left a message asking him to call me. I'm still waiting for that call. Two days later, I sent an e-mail to Gary at his website. Three days after that I still haven't heard from either of them. Clearly they can't be bothered. If you go there, just pay cash, and count your change. read more

Headed to the store and called to let them know I was ready for my pick up. Well I got someone else's order and not mine. Clearly someone messed up and apparently no QC to ensure customers get what they ordered. Glad I checked the box before pulling out of the lot. Disclaimer: I came here with friends who bought beers/micro brews. This place has a wide selection ranging from hard alcohol, wine, beers, microbrews, etc. They even have a cheese selection for those who like to combo that with their wine. Overall, the people know their stuff and are eager to help. I tried what my friends bought, one micro brew I remembered was banana flavored and very tasty! Another one was a heavier tasting Guinness which was ok. I would definitely make another trip back just to try something else. read more

What is not to love about Gary's Wine & Marketplace? They have booze, wine, beer, wine coolers, cheap box wine, table wine, ale, mixers, EVERYTHING! Wait...cheese, pasta, jams, crackers, spreads, gelato. Fat girls everywhere are singing Gary's praises. The store is very neat and organized, which helps when there is so much product to choose from. Staff is also friendly and helpful and card me every time, which makes me feel young and beautiful. Thanks guys. You have everything you need here for a nice romantic picnic. Hint, hint. Gary's Wine Club is also a must. For around $24 a month you get two nice bottles of vino to enjoy that you can either pick up or have delivered. Now wine aficionados are celebrating everywhere too. Huge selection here. This is one of the only local places where I can easily get NJ Beer Company brews, so that's a big plus. The staff was very courteous and willing to help with recommendations and looking for more stock in the back. The fact that they wear headsets made this a lot easier. On the minus side, the parking is insane if you're coming by anywhere near a holiday. The lot runs around the building, and if it's full your options are to park in the Stop & Shop lot or hope to find street parking nearby. Not the most convenient thing if you're planning on getting a lot of stuff. Still, I think the pluses outweigh the possible inconvenience with parking. I would just suggest coming well before a holiday if you don't want to sit around waiting for the cops to direct you to an open space. read more

We stumbled into Garys (literally.. I was hungover) because my boyfriend had a haircut just a bit down the road and we had a few minutes to kill. That "few minutes" turned into nearly an hour. The bourbon section was out of this world for the size of the shop. We danced around the aisle, curious about "barrel strength" nods on several bottles, and after running into Rick, whom explained that they select a barrel and finish the product in the store, felt this place knows their whiskey. Rick was so generous that he offered us a taste of a few already-opened barrel-strength bottles he had. My hangover didnt treat my palate well, but I could tell this would be great on a rainy January day when I wasnt looking like I just fought Mike Tyson. Rick also noted they had just gotten a shipment of some hard-to-keep-on-the-shelves bottles, so we walked out, arms full (with Rick's business card and whiskey). Before leaving, I snuck over to the cheese section and wish I had a cooler with me to take a few home. The mousses and pate's on the shelves made me wish I had crusty bread and red wine on the agenda for later that evening. We were in a time crunch so we didnt check out the wine selection, but it looked promising. Gary's is a bit out of our way for weekly visits, but man do I wish it was closer. I thought when I left Portland I would never see craft beer surround me again. Then I entered Gary's. For Jersey, it has a great selection. I always find something I enjoy. You won't find everything here, but I've been pleasantly surprised on more than on occasion. They also have some awesome Bourbon selections. I love drinking on Sunday with Don Draper. As a liquor, wine and cheese store, it's great. For craft beer, it's just not enough. Gary's has been an occasional visit for the 4+ years I've lived in Morristown - during that time, my love for craft beer has increased by leaps and bounds. And while my love for craft has increased, so has availability, consumer perception and dollars spent on craft beer. Yet in 4 years, the shelf set has remained relatively tiny. They have a decent 6-pack and case selection, but the single bottle sales section is sadly small. What they do have are things that aren't that good and/or don't make as much sense to carry. And everything is $1-2 more than it should be, compared to say Liquor Outlet in Boonton. It's a great store with good wine, liquor, and cheese offerings, but for craft beer heads, Gary's is sadly lacking. read more

Gary's has an excellent variety of wines to choose from. What I especially like is their Saturday wine tasting which usually provide 4 tastings on a particular theme. They also have an email recommendation letter that I have found informative and worthwhile. I find the prices reasonable and they stock all price varieties from my $8 Malbec table wine to higher prices. One unexpected feature of Gary's is their mail order. While away in Florida I was actually able to have wine shipped to me at what turned out to be cheaper then had I bought it in Madison (because of a special no postage charge and because of no sales tax when shipping out of state) - well that was an unusual circumstance. The store also has a fancy food section of cheeses, specialties etc - and they usually have samples available. A well kept store, plenty of parking - this has become my regular wine shop when I'm in NJ. read more

The craft beer selection is phenomenal, and seems to rotate constantly, providing continual variety. Although I've not yet tried any of their deli foods, they look top notch, and the wines seem plentiful. However, I knocked two stars off for service. At the register, I've never had a complaint. But during peak times, you will be trampled - not by other customers, but by employees. Amazing selection of beers and wines, great selection of cheeses, plus plenty of hard liquor means this is one-stop party shopping. I started shopping at Gary's in Madison when it was still called Shoppers Discount Wine and the store was about half the current size. Anyhow now that I've made it clear I'm old :) lemme say that Gary has easily the largest by-the-case beer selection in the area. You want a case of Lowenbrau dark? Usually in stock. A case of Presidente straight from DR? No problem. A case of smutty nose IPA or dog fish whatever? Done. If it's on sale at Gary's it's your lucky day because the Gary sale price is usually about the cheapest I've ever found that beer in NJ. But if it's not on sale, then the regular Gary price is often uncomfortably high. And discovering the beer case price is often a total hassle, the shelves are labeled almost randomly and the price list books that once hung in the beer aisle are only a distant memory. Maybe the average Madison resident simply doesn't care if a case is $20, $30 or $40 but I confess I do. Gary also has a huge single bottle beer selection from around the world and his coolers are filled with interesting six packs. The hard liquor selection is excellent with many single malt scotches, also plenty of cognac, gin, vodka, you name it and even too many disgustingly sweet things. Again if it's on sale grab it because the price will be great, but if you just have to have it now on a day it's not discounted then you'll be charged accordingly. I've found the wine selection to be deep with interesting wines of all varietals and from many wine regions of the world. Go on the right day and you can sample their wines for FREE. One time around the holidays they were sampling champagne and another day I lucked into a Barolo tasting, they were pouring from $50 and up bottles, that was a real treat. If you ever need wine guidance ask in the wine department for Rich. He has worked there ever since I started buying at Gary and has always treated me well, never made feel like an idiot when I just wanted a bottle of decent yet affordable tinto. Of course they have their share of lunkheads in the wine department, what do you expect. I should mention that I subscribe to their wine-of-the-month club, I get two bottles delivered regularly, saves the hassle of making sure I have something drinkable in the house. Finally there's the gourmet section which has sandwiches, cheese, prepared foods, etc. and has provided me a fair amount of parmiggiano reggiano and raclette over the years. They also have a large selection of wines and craft beers and of course the freezer section filled with some of the old favorites. Staff there is very knowledgeable. Please take advantage of that. Try something new. They can also help you match winds and cheeses in case you were trying to throw a dinner party. If they do not have what you're looking for they can order it. It's location is super convenient to the Stop & Shop and the whole foods. Parking is a little difficult. The atmosphere feels upscale and polished.
