I hate Stop & Shop I hate Stop & Shop I hate Stop & Shop. The moment you walk in it smells bad. The entire store is dirty. Walking anywhere near the deli or fish section is unbearable. I only come here if I'm in a rush or need 1 thing. The prices are terrible when compared to Market Basket, their produce is awful quality, and the selection is sparse. I literally cannot step foot into this store ever again. This place seemingly gets worse and worse every-time I come here. Truly the most Ghetto stop n shop I've been in. It's like it's stuck in the early 90's and has not come around at all. The self checkout seem to work better than the people they have hired. It's either really young teens who don't know any better and then burnouts lookin for some kind of work..I guess?! I swear this one mean a$$ lady who is at the help desk. I think she's been there so long, she's actually fused into it. I'm not joking. She also looks like the secretary from Monsters Inc, anyways I digress We got can machines that constantly do not get looked at. A coin star that literally jammed while I was using it. I don't think it was fixed ever.. And then now they have hired who I think is the most repulsive employee I've ever come across. She must've been in her 50's and looked like she didn't want to be there. I had to do an easy exchange, but it was past the help desks closing time, so I went to a register. Boy did I pick the wrong one. She was literally standing there with her back turned to me for a solid min. Now that I can look past. But the way she carried herself from the start is what got under my skin. I walk into the tail end of her nasty cough story. Yes that's what I want to hear in a grocery store, a cashier who scans your food, touching it alllll over Talking about her cough she is getting over, classy Did I get a hi, how are you today, nope. I got a half a&& answer and help from someone else As she was turned around again . I said out loud, sucks making an effort huh? Didn't hear me. That's how out of it she was. I felt bad for this young kid who was her bagger. He looked so down and drained. I mean listening to someone with zero sense of Boundaries is not fun. I walked out as fast as I could. I've been coming here less and less over the years and now I am truly done. UPDATE: wow I am truly done. I shouldn't of stepped back in. But I did. As I was purchasing a product that was for personal use, I dealt with another no boundaries lady. She proceeded to comment on Nearly every item esp the one I didn't want her to see. It's like, these are called self checkout for a reason. I was quite embarrassed and with that, that would be my last time there truly. I see the workers are on strike atm, ah well at least they all realized it was not a good place to work. read more

If I could live on "loss leaders," I would consider shopping here regularly. I like the layout of the store. It has a good produce section, its own organic section off that, large seafood section, good pastries, and its own Dunkin Donuts. But unfortunately, that's where the love ends for me. Because it all comes down to the cost of basic, not-on-sale groceries I would regularly buy. And at this particular store, I noticed those goods were typically about 20% more than I would pay elsewhere. So, would I come in here? Want something in this Stop & Shop? You're unlikely to find it. . . in a timely manner that is. Came in here on an adventure to find playing cards for a party going on just down the street. Simple task no? Finding a general deck of cards? You'd think so. Walked up and down aisles. . . no luck. Asked a store associate. . . were pointed in the wrong direction. Roamed and searched high and low. At the point of giving up and telling our fellow party-goers that the local Stop & Shop is cardless, we came upon them. Invisible, see through, clear playing cards. . . Seriously? Located on a clearance shelf with some random left over 4th of July plates and napkins and god knows what else. Its deceiving when the staff here says "We definitely carry playing cards, I'm just not sure where" to end up finding them in a haystack of oddities, and overpriced at that. I guess just stick to food items with this store. Your sure to find something edible. . . and it won't be to hard to find. :-P read more

I stopped here to pick up a few things and was discouraged to witness another store employee ridicule the cashier while I was in line. I guess she was a manager (her name began with an N) because she was accusing the cashier of doing something while they were trying to ring up another customer. This caused the cashier to defend themselves and it didn't seem like the issue was one to make a fuss over. It was really rude and uncalled for. The cashier was embarrassed and it seemed like it was going to affect their day. The manager should have handled this privately. I also witnessed this manager confront over employees as I was leaving the store. It was all uncomfortable to watch. In general, not enough checkout lanes. There are those self checkout lanes, but those are only good if you have one or two items. read more

It would be embarrassing to tell you the exact amount of times I actually visit S&S in a week. The store is perfect. I have nothing negative to say. Maybe it is the only one right now in the world without the cart caddy things in the parking lot; but who really cares/brings them back anyways. They renovated it a few years ago, to keep up with the logo change and such. Good job guys. Items sort of got moved around, to be expected. No loss. I love my local S&S. I didn't want to write this review, as I have to come here in the mornings before work to get my lunch for the week. I don't live in stoneham but it's the most convenient spot for me. EVERY TIME I go to the deli counter there is the same nasty lady in the mornings. She's just plain rude, and very clearly hates her job. She completely ignores you when you step up until she decides she's found the time to deal with you. Anytime you ask for anything she basically snaps at you. I'm not the one who's well versed in deli meats, YOU are supposed to be. So when I ask for low sodium turkey instead of yelling at me, just recommend a brand that you have in stock. Another man was asking if there was a sweet ham instead of honey baked like he usually buys, and she was just awful to him. God forbid you have to go slightly above and beyond the bare minimum. He was just an older gentleman looking for a little back and forth from an employee. If you truly hate your job, leave and give it to someone who doesn't mind doing it. I do t recommend interacting with the deli unless you truly have to. read more

One of the worst stores I've been to. The shelves are constantly empty or short on the basics (like milk) needs ON THE WEEKEND! This is a suburb and shopping on the weekdays doesn't happen as often; so stock the shelves for the weekend. There is always long lines on the weekends and never anyone in the store to help find products. Additionally the meat is very limited and the seafood section is minimal and sad. Please teach your employee how to wrap fish. It isn't suppose to be hastily wrapped and crammed in a bag or worst; adding shrimp to a bag and just folding over either edge and handing to me. With Melrose and Wakefield growing and improving, this location needs to step up to make Stoneham a desired location. read more

Ok - if you are thinking this is a review of the actual over priced supermarket - you are way wrong...it's for the gas station. First of all, I read the other review here - and bubba h. I'm not hatin' on ya, really I'm not...but I have seen what those guys at the gas station have to deal with when people who clearly have no idea how large or small their vehicle is pull up and take up two spaces, block other cars in, cut in front of other waiting customers, disregard the obvious ORANGE cones that are in the way because a pump is out, continute talking on their cell phones when they guys come up the window to help them, bark at them, have an attitude.....etc etc etc A little "hey how you doin?" and a genuine, friendly smile goes a long way to getting good service. Those guys work in 100+ heat and 25- cold (I've made it a practice to buy those hand warmers and hand them out to who ever pumps my gas in the winter - just because I would totally love the person who does that for me!) One day, I pulled up, it was one of those days when everyone was backing in and pulling out and blocking in and being irritating. I could see the frustration on the guy's face, so I pulled up and asked him if he'd mind if I pumped the gas myself. He was like "sure!!!" with a welcome sigh of relief - while heading over to the other driver that was deep sighing and glaring his way... After I filled up - he thank me, smiled and off I went. I have talked to the produce manager about this and NOTHING changes. REPEATEDLY and often, there is conventional and lately even GMO produce under signs that say "organic"!!! CAN I USE ENOUGH EXCLAMATION POINTS FOR THIS?! if you don't know your sticker numbers (4 is conventional, 9 is organic, and 3 is GMO) you are being screwed and possibly fed poison. he even tried to get condescending with me -- "let me explain how this works." what an a*hole. buddy, let ME explain something-- you don't put signs that say "organic" above food that is not organic. i don't care what your f*cking "system" is for labeling shelves. the organic selection is pretty sad anyway, but INTENTIONALLY misleading the public-- especially the few who actually care about not ingesting GMOs-- is BULLSH*T. so angry. read more

This is my local neighborhood supermarket. I think it's the best option around. Yes, it may be a bit more expensive than Market Basket in Woburn or Shaw's further down on Main Street, but I've been to both and personally, for me, the small cost savings isn't worth the farther drive. Things Stop & Shop does really well: 1. Flowers: They have a really nice selection of flowers and plants at really reasonable prices. I'll often pick up a $5-$10 bouquet to brighten my kitchen table and they last just as long as flower shop flowers! 2. Bakery: They employ some good pastry chefs here! The gourmet cookies are fantastic, the muffins (in my opinion) are better than the dunkin donuts ones inside the store and the fresh breads are pretty good as well. 3. Cleanliness: Compared to Market Basket and Shaws, S&S is much cleaner, which appeals to me when I'm food shopping. 4. Variety & Selection: They carry a lot of stuff! Seriously, if you can't find what you're looking for here, you may not find it anywhere. Things I wish Stop & Shop would improve: 1. Organic/Wild Harvest Section: They have a very small section dedicated to specialty and/or organic foods. And the selection is always changing. It seems every time I find something I like, they stop carrying it. 2. Meat selection: The meat is okay but not great. We often find ourselves going to BJs or a meat specialty store to find the good stuff! 3. Cart racks in the parking lots: S&S still does things the old fashioned way, with cart boys who gather and bring in carts from the parking lot. This leaves carts abandoned in the middle of spaces, making it tough to find parking on occasion. I don't understand why they don't install the cart racks and put the boys to work somewhere else? read more

This Stop N Shop is clean, has a great staff and always has things that I have yet to find at other super markets in the area. For example, fresh mint. If anyone needs mint, not in a plastic container with the herbs and whatnot, you will find it here. I have been unable to find it at Shaw's or other places except for in the plastic container. This is random, but also, Moxie. My father and I spend time with an elderly family friend who lives alone and is unable to get out. He will, at times, have a hankering for some Moxie, and after searching Shaw's, Walgreens, Market Basket and a few other places, Stop N Shop has it, both regular and diet. The Dunkin Donuts here is also a plus, and you can also get Skirt Steak if you ask the butcher in the back. read more

I have a love-hate relationship with my new local grocery store: Love: 1. They make upbeat announcements over the PA as I shop, all of which end with thanking me for shopping at this Stop and Shop. 2. The produce guy was really friendly to me and was singing aloud! 3. They do have more ethnic and imported products than I thought a suburban grocery store would have. (Bubba, I had to Google Tim Tams. They look good!) 4. Their bottle/can return area is REALLY clean and provides wipes in case you do get sticky. 5. We rented one of those rug steamer cleaner thingabobs from there when I first moved to Stoneham and it was easy, with the people being really helpful at the Customer Service desk! 6. Like many Stop and Shops, they have a DD inside! Also, a Citizens so I can get quarters for laundry. 7. Every cashier I have had -- old or young, male or female -- has been really friendly and not crabby like the ones at the ghetto mart I used to go to (Star/Shaw's in Watertown). There is one woman in particular who is always smiling. Susan? Jane? I don't remember, but she is an older woman with brown curly hair. She always makes me smile even if I am having a bad day because she asks about your day and your plans. It's a nice personal touch! 8. Their mango salsa is really good (when they have it) and I have passed it off at parties as my own. Shhhh! 9. Their cakes and pastries are actually pretty good. The birthday cake we got was moist and gobbled up. Hate: 1. Sometimes they run out of stuff and don't restock it for a while. I came here looking for dill weed once and they didn't have it on 3 consecutive trips, spaced out over 2 weeks. Arggggh! 2. Like Lynne mentioned, what is up with the lack of shopping cart storage? You may not find parking near the entrance on most days because they are occupied by shopping carts. I guess that is a bonus if you are trying to get exercise though. I always feel guilty myself because I don't know where to put my car and I don't want to get in anybody's way. My biggest pet peeve! read more

This is truly the worst grocery store within a 30 minute drive. Unfortunately, it is also at the end of my street, therefore, convenient for quick stops on the way home. The fish is never fresh. The shelves are understocked. Whoever manages the store has absolutely no idea The proper staffing required, either that or is unwilling to pay for the labor necessary to ensure the store runs smoothly. I have other stores closer to me, but I drive out of my way to go to this specific Stop & Shop. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable and their meat department is the best. I love to grill beef tenderloin and I've found that it's hit or miss at other stores. I've never had a bad steak from here. Plus, think their produce is good and they have a lot of organic items too. Parking is easy, which is a bonus - I don't have to keep circling around for a spot. read more

The Stoneham Stop & Shop: 1) It seems they move items almost daily! Looking for something one day I'll find it in another aisle another day! AAAGGGHHH!!!! 2) the stupid "self check out" lanes are often messed up. One small misstep and you have to wait for a store employee to show up to fix it. 3) There ALWAYS seems to be people in the aisles - which are too narrow to begin with - stocking shelves or blocking the aisles with stocking carts. 4) There NEVER seems to be enough lanes open or staffed with checkout staff; especially the "express" lanes. 5) And they, very often, do not have what I'm looking for! This is NOT the way to grocery shop. I avoid this every chance I can! read more

My hatred of this store has forced me in to boycotting it entirely now. Last night, I only went in to pick a few items. I went to a self checkout line. I scanned ONE FUCKING ITEM, and the light starts blinking and it tells me to remove all items blah, blah, blah. I see one of the numerous, useless teenagers that work there and ask if he can help. Of course, he cannot. He quickly scurries away. Meanwhile, there are what seems to be 75 other people trying to checkout as well. Of course there are two cashiers on, and no help anywhere to be seen. So, the light is blinking and I am just standing there like an asshole while the teenage dick who oversees the self checkout lines pretends to not notice I am having a problem. I'd love a 2 1/2 stars. The good: Hours are perfect for most working class people in a bedroom community, Management is on the job and most employees seem to at least care. The bad: While there is a Dunkin Donuts inside, they never - never - never get an order right. Best thing to do is go in to 'triple' mode and be prepared to repeat your coffee, etc three times. Well I shop here often since it's so close to my house. I couldn't believe what I witnessed today. There was a new cashier there maybe 50 years old or so who was so obnoxious I couldn't believe it. She was talking to the bag person and complaining about her ex-husband. She called him several swear words and continued to say how he doesn't pay child support, etc. She was talking in a very loud voice too. went yesterday to avoid lines at Market Basket on a Saturday. I would have been better off waiting at MB. I buy a lot of produce and S&S may have the worst. I keep getting told that they buy a higher grade of produce than MB, but that's not been my experience. Apart from having more choice, I find MB produce and herbs last far longer than S&S. Yesterday the only leeks they had were organic - and so more expensive. The leeks were yellow. The produce person marked them down for me (which they should have done without my asking). Apart from the fact that they looked like they'd been stepped on, anything that bad looking raises questions about how nutritious they are. When I got them home, I discovered they had a really hard core. Never saw this before so I looked it up and found out it's common at the end of the growing season. Tossed the cores and had to use all of the leeks to make up for it. I also bought asparagus. Really skinny asparagus, but that's all they had. I discovered that they were in bad shape too. No snap to them, they were squishy. Fortunately I was using them to make a soup. Otherwise, I would have thrown them out. Nobody I know has anything good to say about this store. I went to the Saugus store a week ago and their whole frozen section was down due to coooling issues. Badly managed on every front. read more

The entrance of this store looks dirty. I frequently see S&S staff smoking outside by the entrance. And 3/4 of the time I go there, there is always a group in front of the entrance wanting money. Groups such as Vets, Girl Scouts, local schools, groups helping the homeless,etc... While I have nothing against these groups, it would be nice to enter S&S sometimes without some group asking for money!! And the Citizen's Bank staff are really rude! read more

Don't waste your time. Trying to find FRESH chicken here (or any stop and shop location) is like trying to find the holy grail. I have wasted many trips here trying to buy basic chicken and always find old, outdated packages. The vegetable selection is horrid as well. Just try to find something as basic as an onion or pepper. I don't understand why it is so hard for them to stock the store. Market basket does 10x more the business and yet I always find what I need. Plus staff is more helpful, courteous and friendly at market basket. I have even received offers of help to load my car. This never happens at stop and shop. In fact at stop and shop don't even ask the butcher to cut you a fresh piece of steak unless you want attitude. I usually shop at Market Basket and only run in here on occasion and am usually disappointed. Somehow they never have any decent produce in stock (and yet Market Basket, who has 10x the amount of customers, is always fully stocked). I run in to buy a pepper, onion, or fresh mint and you'd think I was looking for a rare item. I wrote to the store manager, but nothing changed. The lack of produce here is one of the main reasons I avoid this store. read more
