The first time I went with a jacket that had been scuffed up, they seemed fairly nice but declined to work on it because they felt it would be too difficult. The second time I went just to get some measurements for a friend's wedding. I was perfectly happy to pay them for such a simple service. However the moment I walked through the door, they gave me a sour, snobbish look. I can only guess that they disapproved of my appearance... I had my motorcycle gear on. Even so, I politely asked if how much it would cost to measure me. The older gentlemen came up with some ridiculous excuse. I don't recall exactly what he said, but he mumbled something about it being too hard or taking too long to do measurements. Seriously? It was bad enough that they're allegedly incapable of taking measurements, but their attitude was way out of line. You might be ok there if they approve of your looks. No way a discriminatory business owner is getting my business. read more

Gassane Tailors, with Gus at the helm, provides a major service to a town that loves the skinnies and tennies--see skinny pants with hip sneakers. That being said, Austinites love doctoring up their clothing to best suit the trend of sleek attire for hitting the town. I appreciated my expedited service when I dropped in randomly, and the man in charge took care of me with ease and speed. He cares for your budget as well as your preferences, not forcing too much on you as most tailors seem to do. If you need to doctor up some of your closet or suits, consider using these folks. Thank the technology gods for Yelp... I needed a dress tailored for my bff's wedding. I ordered it from ASOS online, which is a British company. Who knew British sizing would involve tons of room in the chest/sides, after being filled with a substantial amount of my own chest. Anyway, thanks to amazing Yelp reviews I made it to Gassane on a Saturday afternoon. I needed the dress to leave town Thursday morning, I knew I was cutting it close, but I didn't know if I needed to pay upfront (you don't) so I was waiting until I got paid to take it in. I should have brought it sooner to reduce the rush feeling I gave the poor man. Alas, regardless of my request, he said he could do it. The alteration itself was simple, just taken in on the sides. The gentleman who helped me was very kind and made sure I was comfortable with the level of tailoring before he marked it. You could tell he knew his stuff. I left my pink dress and received a call Wednesday night that it was ready. Came in Thursday morning, the owner got my dress for me and asked if I wanted to try it on, I did and it was perfect! I changed back, came out, only to find the man who originally helped me, his wife-who did the actual sewing, and the owner all waiting for me to show them the dress. I felt bad I didn't model for them, but it was very sweet that they were anxiously awaiting my approval. They definitely had it, runway show or not. It was $40, not sure if that is good or bad, I was prepared for $30-$50, so I was fine with that. It is hands down the most "grown-up" thing I've done in 28 years of life. These guys are the pros. Best in town (or in the universe?). Gus and Joseph treat everyone with the same kindness and respect, regardless of who you are. Good ol' GW still orders suits from Gus - so at least he knows how to dress if not how to run the country - as do many celebrities and plain ol' people like me with not much money at all. They do quality work - hence, it does take time - usually 2-3 weeks, especially if they're busy. So plan ahead! But don't waste your time going anywhere else. You have found your tailor. read more

Gus and his team are awesome. Every time I've walked in, it's a non-pretentious atmosphere with folks that are genuinely desiring to help you fit your clothes well. I brought a suit jacket in to have the arms shortened a bit and Gus immediately went to work. He measured my arms and took the jacket and just asked me when I needed it back. I went in on Monday and picked it up today. 4 days is a fairly short turnaround time, but Gus made it happen with no rushing fee. The actual cost of altering the jacket came out to $45 before tax. I haven't been to many other places, but I'm guessing this may fall on the more expensive side of alterations. However, the experience come the expertise they provide are, in my opinion, well worth it. read more

This tailor shop is THE BEST in Austin. Not only do they do exceptional work, they have extremely fair prices and ndever take too long. In fact, I went into their shop at 11:00am on a Monday and asked if I could get my 1 shirt tailored by the end of the day, and that I would pay extra. I wanted to take this shirt on a business trip the next morning. My first suit. What do I know about suits? Not much, apparently. It *was* on sale at the department store where I bought it. Apparently the sleeves were two different lengths. All I knew is that they were, like, six inches longer than my short little arms. When you are built like a dachshund, it is hard to get long sleeve garments and pants that fit. I took the suit to Gassane Tailors. In just one week, they altered both the jacket and pants, and PERFECTLY. And only $45 for BOTH pieces, when I asked how much, he (I think it was Joseph) seemed almost apologetic, explaining it was because it had a lining. I guess he misread the look of shock on my face as being a "Wow, THAT MUCH?" when in fact it was "WOW, THAT'S *ALL*?" Years ago, I had paid $20 to have zippers put in two pair of jeans (simple replacement - zipper for zipper, rip one out, put one in). I was expecting much more for all the work entailed in altering this suit. And it looks perfect, like it was originally made this way. You cannot tell it has had alterations. A perfect job, at a good price, in what I feel was a reasonable time. I will do business with them again. read more

Quality work, sure, but why does it take two weeks to hem a pair of jeans? Small staff of two, I suppose. And It seems this couple values the time of certain customers over others. To me they are neither rude or sincere, they are just there to hem and tailor, but the guy in the fancy suit will definitely get more attentive service than your pedestrian designer jeans. I don't need a wedding dress or business suit tailored. I just need a hem job on cotton or wool pants. At this point, I'd rather give my money to Ace Tailors. They have a larger staff and are always willing to offer express/same day service. They even smile sometimes. read more

Hemmed the bottom, had me come in and try it on first, do measurements, then called the next day with final costs and had it finished within 1 week! They had to redo the beading by hand, due to the way it was designed. They were so gracious and helpful - I can't imagine a better experience. I have some diesel jeans with the intentional tears/worn- in look, but one hole got too large to make me not look like a bum, so I took in here. They did a fantastic job of patching up the hole, but still took care to maintain the "worn" look. I also had a pair of jeans hemmed that were perfectly done to my specifications. They were very friendly, accommodating, and professional. It's a little, old-schooled wood paneled place with lots of dated pictures of W. around too. I will never search for another tailor again. Years ago when I first moved to Austin...circa 2002 I was referred to Gassane Tailors and loved them. Then I moved across town and somehow forgot about this little gem. I can vividly remember searching for a decent tailor and consistently being horrified at the outcome of my clothing. How on earth did I forget about this place?! Upon moving back to North Austin they popped back up on my radar and I'm so, so happy to have FINALLY found a tailor that doesn't butcher my clothes! Ladies, have no fear. Though they may seem to specialize in male tailoring, I assure you that over the years they have altered many a dress for me and I can never tell where their work ends and begins from the original piece. I will begin this review by saying that the owners of the store are extremely sweet. I looked up the best reviewed tailor in Austin for the purpose of having my wedding dress altered. In summary I regret taking my wedding dress to this establishment. I paid $350 for good alterations but damage to my wedding dress. That damage is not repairable.   I brought my dress in and was directed to the wife of the owner who does all female alterations. At the first appointment, we decided to adjust the hemline and take in the top of the dress. I tried on the dress during this fitting ( and every fitting) and a few weeks later came in for my second fitting to find my dress visibly damaged. Since neither she or I noticed any damage at our first fitting, and because my photos reflect that the damage was visible only after she had altered the dress, it is my opinion that the damage was caused by this Taylor. The right seam along the skirt had large puckers and Ruffles in it. It appeared that someone had pulled and stretched the delicate silk fabric. The damage was so obvious that there is no way that it could have been there upon the first visit, in my opinion.  Neither the tailor or I noticed any visible damage during my first visit. I am a very detail-oriented person. My photos also reflect that there is no damage to my dress upon my first visit. Thankfully I took pictures of the dress during every visit and will post them with this review. The remainder of my visits were spent addressing the damage to my dress and having them attempt to repair it. Ultimately they were not able to fix my dress and did not offer to buy me a new skirt. I was given a bill for $350 which was the agreed-upon price upon my first visit. They waived tax of $28 because she said that she felt bad about what happened. I will say that the tailor said several times that it was a manufacturer's defect. I understand that she did not want to take any responsibility for the damaged but a prudent tailor would and should have noticed such visible damage upon a first fitting if it was truly a manufacturer's defect. If there was a manufacturer's defect she should have told me so that I could have returned the dress before she altered it. read more

They did such a great job with several pairs of dress pants for me. I'm a little on the short side and have a thick rear and a little waist, so pants are always difficult! I was told they essentially had to take them apart and put them back together and it made me a bit nervous, but all of my pants fit so well now. Everyone was very friendly, the price was reasonable for the quality, and the turnaround time was under two weeks for several pairs. I will definitely be using them from now on! read more

These are nice and sincere people but they are not good for women's clothing--especially for a customer who is clueless about what is needed but knows her clothing doesn't fit. They have no idea how to tailor women's jackets--I spent a lot of money on several jackets that I ended up by giving away because the fit was still so off. One jacket they altered three times--they were always willing to keep trying and I know that they would have tried yet again but I finally recognized their limitations. They actually said that there was only so much that they could do and I should have them make me clothes instead. I don't find that logic convincing--I had lost over 40 lbs so they were taking in fairly expensive (well-made) jackets and had lots of material to work with--if they couldn't alter the clothing successfully I am not sure why they think they can build women's clothing from scratch.(For example, they never touched the shoulders which were far too big.) They just don't understand women's bodies--I suspect there is just more variation among women than among men. I don't think I ever saw another woman customer there in all my visits there, only men. BTW I had bought some of the remaining jackets at Neiman Marcus and I took the rest of my clothes to their tailors--and the result was very different. The first thing they did was change the shoulders, and then the sleeves underneath the armpit--it's hard to describe (and I had no clue) but it was immediately clear that was what was needed. The jackets done at NM are flawless and I have lots of complements. And while not cheap they were less expensive than Gassane's. Sadly NM works only on clothing you buy/bought there. read more

The price was more than reasonable, he shortened the job by two days with no extra charge, and what I got back was two perfect-fitting suits. I couldn't be happier. I came here to get my bridesmaid dress hemmed which had a lot of intricate beading on it. I brought in very expensive clothing I purchased in Amsterdam to have altered. I also brought in an example shirt to show them how I would like to have the other items altered in the same way as I travel for business and use tailors all over the country. Not only did they not follow the example but they got blood stains all over my $160.00 sample shirt. The owner argued with me and said they did not stain it and I should return the shirt...to Amsterdam! I was furious! They were never going to admit their mistake so I stormed out after paying a hefty $90.00 for the incorrect alterations which included a blood stained dress shirt. Two shirts which were not altered correctly will have to be redone and I will have to pay another tailor yet again to fix them correctly. Going to this tailor was a very expensive mistake for me. I love Yelp because I always find great businesses to use however after four years of using this app here is my first negative review. Please do not make the same mistake as I did. The only good that came from this situation is SoCo Dry Cleaners and Alterations on Congress got the four blood stains out of my shirt for only $2.50. Go there instead. Trust me. read more

I was extremely disappointed with my experience here. I came in with a jacket that needed the sleeves hemmed, and Gus took one look and said 'No no, the buttons are special so I have to hem from the shoulder. $130'. He refused to hem the sleeves from the wrist, which is possible, so I walked out and went to a regular dry cleaner/alteration location and had it done for $27 and they look great. Gassane has lost my future business; I look for a tailor who looks for ways to accommodate their customers, not find ways to say 'no'. read more

Solid! I read that they were the best, so I dropped off my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE irreplacable jeans for a zipper replacement. They gave me a date and price quote, and I appeared on that date and paid the exact price quoted, no muss, no fuss. When it comes to clothes, I am super picky about details. I want my suit has perfect sleeve length (as well as width), nice body hugging effect, and right overall length (hello people, I am talking to you. Be ware of your trench-coat-ish suit, it's wrong.) As for jeans and pants, I have a full spectrum of preferable lengths depends on cutting. I knew Gassane Tailors (Joseph) through Diesel Austin about 1 year ago. When I get a brand new pair of Diesel jeans, I always ask them to do the "attach hem" job to keep special wash/treament at hems. Diesel charges 12 bucks for the service and Gassane is the place they send to do alternation. So far, I've had 6 pairs of Diesel jeans hemmed, another two pair of bootcut jeans turned into slightly tapered straight leg jeans perfectly, 4 suit jackets with sleeve length/width taken in and etc etc. Absolutely satisfied, especially after Ace tailor and other heinous tailors have ruined my clothes. They are pretty busy all year round so sometimes service could be a little bit slow. DO push them and say you need to pick up your stuffs before certain date (I'd say give them about 1 wk for 2 pieces, 1.5 wks for 4, and so on). Price is quite reasonable in terms of quality. After all, a nice tailor needs to make living so don't compared Joseph's price with your next door cleaners' alternation service. It's different, guaranteed! read more

Maybe I was just unlucky, but for me, this place was horrible. I had some suit pants hemmed and the both pair looked like they were done by my 10 year old. 4 inch extremely crooked hems are not my gig. The suit jackets did not fit at all when they gave them back. I told them to repair it, but after the second trip back, I will just let them keep the jacket. I am not going to pay for such a poor job. All of this for an extremely high price. Never again. read more
