I had previously tried a few alterations people since moving to Austin in 2021, and they've either closed or did sub par work. So when I decided to try Olivo's, I kept my fingers crossed. I brought in three fairly expensive items, a tunic and 2 dresses, which needed hemming and I was very specific on how much I wanted shortened and that I wanted the identical kind of hem as was currently on them. Olivia told me it would be 2-1/2 weeks because it was prom season and he was very busy, but that was fine because I wasn't in a rush. The end result was well worth the wait...perfection! I've been sewing my entire life and might have done it myself except my sewing machine is in storage, but I have to say that the quality of his work was superior to any I've ever had done. My items were ready in the day promised (not a day before, lol) and the price was perhaps on the higher end but I considered it reasonable given the quality of his work and how much time I knew it likely took. Carlos is the best tailor I've ever worked with. He's so skilled, attentive to detail, and always helps me determine the feasibility of tailoring an item. But don't just take my word for it. I know several professional clothiers and they all swear by Carlos as the best in the city. The work has always come out top notch and he goes above and beyond to fix problems. I once brought in 6 shirts to be tailored, and he messed up on one (the first time in 8 years he said). He was so apologetic that he wanted to pay for a replacement shirt and comp all of the other shirts too. It's a local business and I thought that was too much so didn't take him up on that offer and insisted he be paid for the work that was done correctly. But that just shows the type of man and business this is. Nobody else I'll go to for my tailoring needs. read more

Stay away!! Honestly this is the last place I will ever take my clothes again. The tailor is mediocre at best. I brought in a vest a few months back for alterations and the vest turned out awful. I would say pretty much every alteration I have given him this year was not up to standards. He is not at all a pleasant person to talk to unless you are a friend of his. For me, today was the tipping point for a 1 star review and has permanently lost my business. I was told a time frame in a previous conversation to have a logo iron on which was 24 hours and that was not honored when I brought it in. He said he was too busy to get it done in 2 days although the previous logo (exactly the same one) he completed in 5 minutes while I waited. After talking to him he said "and now I am an hour behind". Right before that he was chatting with a woman for 10 minutes about test results. So how are you behind from a 2 minute conversation with me? I had reached my limit of his discourteous attitude. After that I had to drive around town looking for another tailor who can do it. If you want something done quick, bring it to him. If you want something done right, bring it to Reid's dry cleaners or Ace Tailor. Their tailors are the best in the city although they do get backed up and I sometimes have to wait a few weeks. I only brought it to Olivia's these previous instances because Reid recommended him and the jobs I needed done, I needed quick. BIG MISTAKE. read more

I can't say enough about the Tailor. He is so skilled, and not afraid to tell you when something isn't going to work. He completely revamped a bridesmaid dress for me, but let me know when my requests were going to ruin the design of the dress. For my wedding, he was very fast (I only had a month) and did an amazing job. I was hating the dress when I brought it in, and he made it fit perfectly, even getting the hem to hover just above the floor with magical precision. Service was okay. The man who helped me seemed in a rush when I came in and like other reviews stated, my item wasn't ready by the date specified. He explained that he had undone the seems because he "didn't like the color" and hadn't redone it. I was going out of town the next day and needed it by that eventing we agreed on so he ended up fixing it that same day but it was a bit frustrating to hear that after two weeks the dress still wasn't ready. Like several other reviews have mentioned, I've gone in a couple times only to find out my things were not ready when promised. To the owner: It's really irritating to take a lunch hour or rush over after work only to find you've wasted your time & energy because your item isn't ready when it was promised to be ready. Don't say you're going to have it ready on a certain date and then not have it ready on time. I've never needed anything on a rush, so usually it seems like if you drop it off on Tuesday he tells you it will be ready the following Tuesday. However, everything has always been altered well, he'll tell you what will work and what won't, he's obviously a very skilled professional, and I've always been satisfied with the results. The prices seem fair for the quality of work he does. read more

Now, I've been known to get a little excited about places (Ahem...Spartan Pizza and Franklin's Barbecue) - and this only adds to my list of awesomeness. I had a bridesmaid dress that was ridiculously large on me....at least 2 sizes too big and about a foot too long. I took it in, tried it on, and as soon as the tailor came in, I just whined and said "Fix it, pretty please?!" He chuckled and got to work. I went back in for my final fitting a couple weeks later and the dress is PERFECT. And it wasn't something simple. We're talking delicate fabric, tons of pickups, and an added bustle. This place is so great! I went to get my dress pants tapered - the nice gentleman sized and pinned exactly how slim I wanted them. Took about a week, and they were perfect when I came back to pick them up! Cost me $27. Unfortunately, I forgot to take into consideration the width of my dress shoes, so the pants were a little too slim after pairing my shoes with them. The next morning, I brought them in again to see if I could get them loosened a bit by the end of the day (because I needed them the very next day) and they were perfect when I returned, at no additional cost! Call before you go for your things. If there's one thing you gather from this review, let this be it. Twice I have been on my way to pick up something days after the agreed-upon ready date, and twice I have turned around because said item was not ready. The second thing to remember: cash or check only. Bring that along as well. Besides that, the people are kind and the service is not Jersey-cheap, but not terrible either. I had them work on a pair of leather pants that needed to be taken in to look less early 2000s Matrix and more circa now. I was fitted for the pants twice. The last time I was there I said I would pick it up in a week. I called not one, but TWO weeks later while on my way to pick them up. Tailor: Oh, well the leather pant glue is not dry yet. me: oh. huh. How long does it take to dry? Tailor: 4-6 hours. me: Oh so... you just glued them. Tailor: well they need to dry, so can you please come tomorrow morning? Again, the folks are nice, but whatever date you need, you better tell them 2-3 days sooner AND follow-up with phone calls, or you'll never have your stuff ready. If your schedule is flexible and you're not regularly tied up in work meetings, you'll have no problem! read more

Can I tell you a story about this place? It's about my wedding day, and how this guy helped me out. It was less than an hour before I had to meet my friends and family at lunch before the evening ceremony. Needed to be in full battle armor, but the top button on my dress shirt broke, and I couldn't manage to single-handedly put on my cuff links. Also, it was my wedding day. I was a bit on edge. Very excited, but in need of assistance. Walked into my friendly neighborhood tailor's, where I've been going since I moved nearby in 1997. For the life of me, I can't remember the name of the tailor who's helped me all these times, and he doesn't remember me from my infrequent visits, but he very calmly replaced the button while soothing me with a story about his son's wedding. And as I buttoned my shirt with shaking hands, he stepped in to put the cuff links into my shirt cuffs and chatted with me while I tied my necktie. I entered his shop all a twitter and left calm, feeling ready for the big event later. I will remain forever grateful for the calming care this tailor gave me on my wedding day. I've gotten many things altered here - from simple pants hems to more complicated dress and blazer alterations - and have always been pleased with the results. When you go, you get escorted to a dressing room so that you can put on the item that needs altering. When you are ready, you press a door-bell ringer, and the owner promptly shows up with chalk in hand to mark what is needed. The whole process takes only a few minutes. The work is very professionally done on-site (so there is little danger of your clothes getting lost), and prices are reasonable. They tend to be very busy, so turn-around time can be up to a few weeks. That said, I've never asked for rush service myself, but I would think they could work with you if the need was urgent. I took my jeans to Olivia's to have the legs hemmed and the width taken in a bit. I brought them in on a Wednesday and they were not supposed to be ready until the following Wednesday. No problem, I was not in a big rush and they had priced themselves lower then the other place I called in town. After dropping my jeans off, I realized they had not given me a price quote. After multiple attempts, I finally got a hold of them (their hours are very unusual). $23 for both alterations (good!). Seven days go by and I go back into Olivia. I waited for a bit while the gal in front of me was told that her alteration was not finished yet. Then I heard the same thing. However, my jeans were going to be ready in 30 minutes. So, I left to go get my grub on at Central Market. Came back an hour later to pick up my jeans. Within a minute after I walked in, the tailor ran to the back of the shop to apparently finish the jeans. The hem looks alright, but the waist that was taken in looks kinda sloppy. Not to sound like a huge PITA, but if it's not ready the day that you tell a customer that it is going to be ready, at least give em a heads up. read more

I found this place on Yelp, although I used to drive past it for an entire year, as I used work about 200 yards away in the Jefferson Building! At first I thought they would have a hefty price tag, as it's in a pretty nice area, but their prices are incredibly reasonable! I recently lost some weight and had some of my favorite dresses and suits taken in and they have always done a wonderful job! I also have to get EVERY pair of jeans hemmed because I'm short, and they do it for only about $10! I've never had more than about a two week turn-around. I have sent so many friends here and will continue to get alterations done as long as I'm around Austin. Carlos is very sweet and they an old-school establishment. I needed more layers in the front to make it a little more puffy and a whole one shoulder removed to make my dress just a strapless sweetheart neckline. Each time I scheduled an appointment and went in and they were just so helpful in making sure I was perfectly happy. Carlos does excellent work. He recently saved a pair of ill fitting J Crew pants I had sitting in my closet and brought a pair of flannel Ralph Lauren trousers back to life that I picked up at the thrift store. I wanted both pants slightly tapered, shortened, and cuffed (I'm going for that Thom Browne look) and he did just that. His prices are very fair as the quality is excellent. The pants I had brought him were either on final sale or picked up for dirt cheap, those Ralph Lauren pants go for $160 from some eBay shops but I was able to find them at Savers for $6. That said, it was worth it to pay $40 to get them tailored to my specifications. Now if we only had enough cold weather days in Austin for me to wear those flannel trousers. read more

I had to get my wedding dress hemmed and taken in in some places. Had two fittings and they went really fast. The business had a death in the family and the owner had to close the store the day I was supposed to pick up my dress. He called me right away and we arranged for me to pick it up first thing in the morning, he even opened early for me. They did a great job on my dress. They can definitely tailor. I sent in my Express columnist pants to be hemmed about 3 inches. A week and a half later, I received a pair of perfectly hemmed pants. Compared with my other two pairs of Express columnist pants and their respective hems, I can guarantee that you would not be able to tell the difference between the two. My boyfriend, who is an Olivas regular, concurs that it takes at least 1 1/2 weeks if not more to get your tailored items. Getting one polo shirt, a denim jacket, a suit blazer, and one pair of pants tailored took about 2 weeks to complete and cost around $80. They can do basics very well, based on how much I like how the polo looks on my boyfriend now. ;) Bring cash!!! Note: It is super hard to find this place, so use a GPS or look for the Burger King across the street. read more
