i am a whole foods baker from Houston that had to make a trip to Dallas. it felt quaint and perfect. you walk in to a very clean restaurant greeted and served by pretty much a person that has the adorably nice good hearted personality of a Disney princess. with donuts that looks like they took great care and time in making. for houstonians to understand donuts. there donuts are as plump and savory as the shipleys donuts mixed with the delicate sweet texture of krispy kreme. as of now they are my favorite donuts. its a shame i don't live in Dallas read more

Well, looks like I'll be the first one to break the 5 star streak. Here it goes.. Sk Donuts is a solid donut shop and lucky for me, it's a place on the way to work in the morning. They make wonderful cake donuts, you have to try the blueberry. Each bite is bursting with the aroma and flavor of blueberry cake. The strawberry glazed donut is good, the icing is spot on. All the fruit flavored donuts are super flavorful. The plain glazed donuts on the other hand, not as great. The icing is super thin making it crusty so the sugar breaks apart as you eat them and the dough is not very airy. These are thick donuts. I prefer light and airy glazed donuts and these were not my favorite although they make so many donuts with sprinkles and who doesn't like sprinkles? Sprinkles make everything better! They make croissant sausage rolls with bacon. Those I would drive across town for. They are ridiculously good. The lady who takes care of you at the front is the friendliest donut shop owner ever. The shop is very clean and they have a large drink selection. Also, you'll always get free donut holes with every purchase. One of the perks of supporting a local shop. Love this place! Firstly, there are no fancy flavors just classics that are impeccably done. My personal favorite is the vanilla sprinkle, lovingly frosted and dipped. All of the flavors are not overly sweet, are very tidy, and pretty much perfect. Case in point: they don't fill their donuts until you order them, preventing a soggy shell- genius! Secondly, it's run by the nicest couple ever, one could not ask for better service. Thirdly, it's super affordable, a dozen running around 9 bucks or so. Maybe it's just me but when a store says they're open, they should be open. Lets get the preliminaries out of the way. Location is fine. It's convenient for me. It's at the corner of Gaston and Fitzhugh. I have to pass another donut place to get here, but it's well worth the extra minute or two. The staff are super friendly and quick. Most times it's just the couple that I assume own/run the place. It's almost always her flying around filling orders and him in the back doing whatever donut makers do. Price is good. It's on par with every other non-hipster place around. Selection is about what other places have. The plain glazed and chocolate frosted always disappear when I bring them to work. (They are really good, but I don't get excited about glazed/chocolate frosted.) Lots of other donut varieties and several types of SAUSAGE ROLLS. ************************* RANT: THESE ARE NOT KOLACHES. A Kolache is a Czech fruit/cheese (sometimes nut) filled pastry that's kinda similar to a danish. The little rolls with a sausage inside are SAUSAGE ROLLS. (Technically they are "klobasnek" (little sausage) but most Czech folk are fine with "sausage roll".) Taking these things to work and telling folks you brought "kolaches" is like stopping at McD's and bringing sausage biscuits to work and telling everybody "Hey everybody, I brought danishes." Please stop. ************************* So, if everything is fairly similar to other standard donut shacks, what puts this place over the top? Cinnamon!!! It is increasingly hard to find a place that will actually use Cinnamon. They SELL pastries with cinnamon in the name, but you would be hard pressed to find cinnamon on it. There may be a hint of it, or a light dusting, you might ever see a few dark-colored flecks that are purported to be cinnamon, but you aren't going to get any real amount of cinnamon. Your drive-through convenience isn't going to sway me if you are cheating me out of my cinnamon. (I'm lookin' at you USA Donut.) SK uses the cinnamon! Get the Cinnamon Twist and it is covered with real, actual cinnamon! And plenty of it! You can SEE it, SMELL it and TASTE it. I realize that cinnamon is an expensive ingredient, but if you are going to have it listed as a "Cinnamon Twist", please put some cinnamon on it! SK DOES!!! 5 Stars!!! read more

Very poor service. "Give me your order and money and then GET OUT" mentality. I walked in with my mom and dad who are in town and was very disappointed. I chose this place from the good reviews but the owners were SO RUDE. The woman taking my order was pacing behind the counter because I wasn't sure what I wanted and then proceeded to fill and try to sell me a donut because I asked a question about it. I told her I didn't want it and she made a fit about throwing it away. There was only one other customer there being taken care of by the gentleman (so there was no rush). my guy and i moved to the neighborhood of gaston and fitzhugh about 8 months ago. we already had a donut shop, usa donuts, almost across the street from our house. about a month after we moved in, SK Donuts opened their doors. SK stays open until 1 pm everyday, which is just great for those lazy weekend mornings. and they aren't trying to serve their late-risers with the leftovers: there are fresh kolaches and breakfast croissants all the way to closing. now that we are regulars (about once every week), we always get to pick a free donut; gone are the days of sad free donut holes: i usually pick a glazed blueberry cake donut! i cannot say enough about this little shop. i hope they are here in the neighborhood a long time! read more
