This place was so good I went here twice. I will say their chicken curry is what I expected their chicken vindaloo to be but their vindaloo has a very tangy almost tomato like paste. The vindaloo was not for me. I went home and added some cream to it and it tasted like butter chicken. That being said, the curry chicken was so god. The chicken is moist. The flavors are just perfection. Mom also loved the baighan Bartha. This one is a bit sweeter than other versions I have had but it is equally as good. I really liked it. We got medium spice and it wasn't too hot. The butter chicken was also delicious. They had appetizers with that thin crisp bread and the green mint and red tangy sauce. It was really good. This is the first restaurant from where we ordered food when we moved to Calgary. We were staying in a hotel and did uber eats from this restaurant. Since then we have might have ordered atleast 6 times from here, as I guess we liked the food. We have tried almost more than half of stuff on their menu. Food is good here, not as exceptional like you get in India or as good as the one we are used to in Toronto/Brampton area, however still good. Better than most Indian in Calgary we have so far tried. On our first order we ordered Mahi Fish Tikka, Butter chicken, paneer lababdar and few breads ( butter naan, garlic naan, lacha parantha and tandoori roti ). Everything was fresh and delicious. The one item that stood out for me was Mahi Fish Tikka. It was flavorful, soft, juicy and has perfect amount of char, that gave it a wonderful smoky aroma. It was well paired with their mint chutney. After that we wanted to try more of their dishes. So over last few months we have tried their Chicken 65, chilli chicken, chilli fish, gobi manchurian, balti chicken, chiken pakoda, shahi paneer, paneer butter masala, paneer tikka masala, fish pakoda and few more. The best one so far has been Balti Chicken and Mahi fish tikka. They are consistent with flavor, quality and quantity most of the time. Couple of times currries and naan did not seem as fresh as other times. Plus in one of the Uber eats orders they messed up the order a bit. We had ordered bread basket, which comes with butter naan, garlic naan and lacha parantha. Plus we had ordered 2 tandoori roti. They missed tandoori roti's and lacha parantha from our order. So we had alot of curry, however not much bread to eat it with. We had to make rice at home. I am confused between 3 stars or 4 stars, however at this time I will 4 stars as this was the first restaurant we tried in Calgary and everything was good in that order. However if anything changes in next orders, I will update here. Until then I will keep ordering from this place in future and will recommend this place to everyone who is looking for good Indian food. read more

Easily one of the best Indian restaurant I've ever eaten at. The Vindaloo was amazing, butter chicken was out of this world. The garlic nan perfect. Generous portions despite the pandemic pinch that has plagued most restaurants causing quality and quantity/value issues. Will be back a few more times before I leave Calgary. Absolutely love the aloo gobi from here (and many other dishes). I'm a creature of habit, so my fiancé and I will order the same dishes from here. The food is ALWAYS delicious. We always have leftovers when we order from here. 4/5 stars since some of our food when we've ordered hasn't been delivered previously. However, it has happened on a limited number of occasions and may be related to a delivery app and not the Gate of India's fault. So - I'm assuming it's that. Ordered the following for snacks: Masala tea Veggie samosas - the tea was super yummy! Made perfectly! The samosa was pretty good too. And their sweet chutney and mint chutney were yummmmmm!!!! Went here two times had chicken masala. The sauce was great but the amount of chicken it was terrible. There were about six small cubes of chicken and the rest of them were yams of some sort. Bay Area has some of the best Indian food in the usa and this place in Calgary definitely was in the top Indian places. Raj our server/host was very friendly and suggested options and no of items for our group of 4. We loved the food so much that we ate here twice , once when we flew into Calgary and on our way back to usa. We had the veg and non veg thali. Veg - 10/10 quantity and quality . Non veg - 9/10 quantity and quality. Didn like the mutton so much. Tandoori roti and butter naam - soft and nice, mix vegetable, shadi paneer, chicken lababdar and chk methi malai - so flavorful and different gravies. As soon as you walk into the restaurant you are hit with an amazing aroma of spices - I was starving when I walked in and the smell made me even more excited to eat. We shared the vegetable somas (these were excellent), paneer; butter chicken ; chickenkorma , butter naan , garlic naan and coconut rice. Also a big glass or white wine for only 6.99 :) The food was fantastic - everything was amazing and I would order it all again. The coconut rice was some of the best I've ever had. Couldn't stop eating the paneer. Service is slow - often we were without water. But we were not in a rush and the flavour is worth the wait. We asked for mild as we were concerned w out the spice level; I didn't find it spiced at all so would go the next level up for next time. Reviews didn't match the quality of the food and there were quite a lot of google reviews too, as I recall VERY soon after it opened, I know others commented on this too. So yeah... IF they are fake reviews, I think they really overdid it! Anyway, service was really good, food was OK. If there's one thing I have to say about this place, their vegetarian dishes are better than the meat ones, generally speaking. This was such a pleasant surprise. We had never been here before, friends and I went for a buffet lunch and we were really impressed!! They had a lovely selection and brought us a basket of delicious warm naan bread. One of the best we have ever had. Loved that the intensity of spice wasn't overwhelming in some dishes, like at other buffets. Their desserts were so fresh and delicious we couldn't resist seconds. Service was great. They spice isn't over powering just perfect and not bland at all. Only reason why I minus a star was lady server didn't look to friendly and decor was a little to dark for me. My husband and I come in to eat here at least once a month. Its a small little restaurant, but the service is wonderful and the food is delicious! We split a meal on Friday, but usually he gets Chicken Madras, his favorite. I love the wide selection of vegetarian dishes to choose from. I found this little out-of-the-way spot on Yelp. I've had a taste for Indian food since I arrived in Calgary nearly two weeks ago. Hailing from Los Angeles we have some of the best Indian food I've ever tasted in the United States. I will say this place did not disappoint. At a bargain price of around $11 American it's an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet that has a vast variety of Indian dishes. I literally tried a bit of everything but the Goat Curry, Butter Chicken and Tikka Masala are the standouts. Fairly prompt service , very clean and enjoyable environment, traditional Indian decor and Indian music. My overall experience here was really good... Although that last trip to the buffet I probably didn't need. Easy parking as it's in a strip mall and seeing its a buffet you don't really need to wait to eat. Definitely a thumbs-up on this place all the way around as it exceeded my expectations. In the words of my former Governor I'll be back. read more

We sampled lots from the menu and the whole party was raving about the food. I had the Beef Vindaloo, Veggie Korma, each type of rice on the menu- my fav was the mushroom rice. I'm sure you could order anything here and be happy. I noticed a good flow of regulars coming and going while we ate which is always a good sign. This is by far one of the best Indian restaurants I've ever been to. While alot of the Indian joints around town are good, I've found the service to be lacking. Gate of India is the exception. The host/waiter Umesh was amazing. He took the time to explain the menu and engage us. We had the Lamb Rogan Josh, Goat Curry and Butter Chicken. The flavours were rich and delicious. To top it all off we had Kheer or Rice Pudding for dessert and oh man was it delicious. The owner is also the chef. It's very apparent that he takes great pride in his restaurant and his food.
