Warning: Do NOT bring your pet to David A. Walker at Gateway Animal Hospital! I brought my perfectly healthy cat in for a routine rabies vaccine. What happened next was anything but routine. The vet aggressively pushed Q-tips so far into my cat's ear canal that it ruptured her eardrum and caused severe trauma. Within an hour of leaving, my cat was in obvious distress. I rushed her to an emergency veterinary clinic, where she was diagnosed with Horner's Syndrome -- a condition in cats that results from severe neurological or physical trauma. Half of her face was paralyzed for an entire month. Years later, she still has facial twitching. A routine vaccine visit left my cat with permanent damage. Please do your research before trusting this vet with your animal. What should have been a 10-minute appointment turned into a medical emergency and lasting neurological effects for my cat. No pet owner should have to go through this. read more

Generally my experience is great! Dr. Walker and Lynn are amazing. I don't normally need to come in quickly but I did today. I called and was told they could squeeze me in, in 45 mins so I hustled to load up my dog and get her to the vet on time. When I got there on time I found the receptionist with the long black hair Cat I think her name is to be standoffish and rude almost completely unconcerned like she's doing YOU a favor, zero eye contact! She asked me all the same exact questions I answered on the phone and then got me in a room where I waited for an hour!!! Yes an hour!! Then Dr Brenner came in they took my dog back for a sample brought her back only to be told Dr went back into her other appt and would be back shortly. Please don't say you can be seen or squeezed in at a certain time only to make us wait for an hour then wait again! My visit in total was over 90 mins for 10 mins with the doctor. My dog is stressed out enough being there and I have to be back at work. So disappointed, I'm just not loving the new staff these days. They are not very friendly I used to feel like family there and now just any old patient. read more

Our Rottie, Ozzy, was a patient his whole life (12 years) until he passed away in 2012... and now our little RatTerrier, Otis, gets to see Lynn, Dr Shelly and Dr Dave during his visits for the last 9 years. I have taken every one of my now six dogs to Gateway and Dr. Walker ever since I moved here in 2002. There are not enough words to describe how wonderful Dr. Walker and every member of his team are. He is not only incredibly knowledgeable, but he is also incredibly compassionate. Once, when we had to put one of my dogs down, he suggested that I bring her to the office after hours. My dog and I walked along in a grassy area, and Dr. Walker came out after about 10 minutes. We both petted and talked to her, and she laid down in the grass. Then gave her an injection, and she seemed to just drift off. I will be enternally grateful to him and his team. They also work so well together and care very much. read more

I have been taking my two dogs here for the past 12+ years and not once have they over charged, over diagnosed and never made us get /ordered some kind of unnecessary tests or procedures. Dr. Walker and his staff are the BEST! I have been taking my dogs and cat to Dr. Walker for years. He cares deeply about his patients and has the utmost respect for the owners. First of all, Gateway is the reason that my cat got really sick and died. Dr. Amy Brenner (sp?) looked at my cat back in Feb when I noticed that he had what looked like a rash all over his body and very red ears. She told me it was nothing and gave me some ear drops. A month later my cat was in the ER at the 24 hour emergency care of Gwynedd in Lansdale (highly recommend). It turned out that he had lymphoma and died three months later. Recently we adopted 2 new kittens from a rescue and we wanted to bring them in to see Amy and they refused us an appointment saying that they were "booked solid for months." The receptionists are really rude, unfriendly, and the place overall just is small and dirty and I did not like it at all whatsoever. I do not recommend this place and in fact I think it should get checked out. We have since moved out pets to a different practice in the area. read more

Gateway Animal Hospital is wonderful! My family has been taking our animals here over 10 years. The staff is always so helpful & friendly and the vets are absolutely amazing! My cat has a disease that causes us to visit more frequently then normal visits and I am always confident he is in great hands! Our dog and cat both seem to love the staff. The animals never seem nervous during any checkups or procedures, and you can tell everyone there knows what they are doing. My family has taken our pets to Gateway Animal Hospital for years, and when I got pets of my own, I began taking them here too. Everyone who works here, from the people at the front desk to the doctors, are incredibly nice and do a fabulous job. I always recommend them to friends and family when they are looking for a new vet. Shortly after I got my cats, one of them had crystals in his urine and had to be hospitalized for a few days. Everyone at Gateway was great about letting my husband and I come in and visit him every day (while he had an IV in his little kitty arm), and they were able to treat his condition and have helped us manage it ever since. Because he now eats prescription food, I am in the office regularly to stock up, plus our cats are on different schedules for their annual check-ups, so it seems like we're there quite a lot. Everyone remembers us and knows and loves our cats. They are very accommodating when it comes to scheduling. Shelley is the vet we usually see, and she is great - very sweet, knows us well (the cats as well as my husband and I), and really explains things and answers questions. We never feel rushed or like she doesn't have time for us. I have also seen Amy several times when Shelley wasn't available, and she was also great. And when my family had dogs, they saw Dr. Walker. Part of being a pet owner, unfortunately, is dealing with their end-of-life issues, and all the vets here are so caring and understanding when it comes to this time, as well. Their new office is in a slightly less convenient location for me, but it is a large, modern building; everything is clean and new; and they have lots of space for exam rooms, operating rooms, records, kennels, etc. Also be sure to say hello to their resident parrot, and don't be surprised if you are greeted by one of the office cats. Regarding the reviewers who are commenting that the vet was not able to see them on short notice, I just wanted to point out that this is not an emergency vet. There are emergency vets around here and Gateway will refer you to them and take the records later to follow up with you and the patient. However, when I came into possession of a stray kitten, they were able to schedule an appointment for the next morning for an exam and to neuter him (and he's now sleeping peacefully next to me). read more

Dr. Rae and Dr. Roland are so good at what they do! When we first adopted our rescue Hound dog, Dr. Rae gave him the most thorough assessment. He required many trips back to their office in 2018 and they always found a way to squeeze him in, address his malady and send us on our way. Our puppy has seen Dr. Walker who's provided equally outstanding veterinary care. Finally, This place would not be able to function without the rockstars at the front desk. Took the new pup in today for his 1 yr shots along with the cat. As usual it was a breeze thanks to the staff at Gateway. I happened to read the other review that has been posted. I could not disagree more with some of what they claim. First, Gateway Animal Hospital is immaculately clean. Not a hint of the dog odor that permeates many vet offices. Second, the front desk staff are remarkably polite and accommodating. I came in with a dog on a leash and a cat in a tote, and seconds later I was ushered into an exam room. They even cleaned the cat's "accident" from the tote for me. While small, this office is far from cramped. I'd say it is as large or larger than two other vet's that I have used in the area. In contrast to the other reviewer, I found the folks at Gateway to be incredibly caring. When it came time to "do the right thing" by our late 13 yr old dog, they were extremely accommodating to our needs and remarkably compassionate to our pain. No one likes to lose a pet, be it from old age or disease. An easy mistake is to blame the vet, rather than accept that life can be fragile. Dr. Dave Walker and his staff are compassionate and professional. My Vizsla Trooper is uncomfortable in the waiting room so they always schedule us at a time that he can slip right into a room. DR. Walker found Trooper's cancer and provided us referrals and advice to beat the odds. He is the best veterinarian we have ever had and I have had dogs all my life. My precious dog has been a patient of Dr. Dave's for many years now. I really like his laid back manner and the way he loves animals. I find that the ladies at the front desk have always been very pleasant and greet my dog as an old friend and when I come in to pick up medicine they always ask about my dog more so then they ask about me. Smile. I had to see Amy Brenner once when I needed to go in for a quick unscheduled appointment that they fitted me in for. She was just as professional as Dr. Dave and assured me that what I was concerned about was normal, but if I wanted to get into it she would do more testing. I do not find the office dirty I would say it is old fashioned and needs updating. And I suppose that is why they are moving to a new location. And I am sad as it will be further away from my home. I read over Amanda D.'s review and I have to mention that my previous dog died of cancer. It is a disease that is very hard to diagnose. An emergency clinic I took my dog to did not find anything wrong with him initially, but when I got home from vacation and took him to my previous vet - after extensive blood work over a weeks' period of time they found the rare cancer. Even chemotherapy could not save him. I did not blame the emergency clinic. They did not think that his symptoms would be cancerous. Even with human medicine it is trial and error. read more

I have been coming to Gateway for over 10 years, and they have taken great care of my cat and dog's needs. Dr. Brenner is so sweet and great with my dog, who is terrified of the vet, and my cat, who can be a nightmare on Elm St. They' ve just moved to the new office on Croton, but the service is great as always. The staff are excellent, very caring, and great at answering my questions (with plenty of reassurances since I tend to fret and panic when my pets aren't feeling well) . When my cat was sick with a stomach virus, they were very thorough with administering the necessary fluids and medications, and kept him overnight until he was fully recovered. I also love the immunization reminders that they mail; they are so helpful in keeping track of my pets' shots, etc. read more

I been taking my animals to the Gateway Animal Hospital, more specifically Dr. David Walker, for the past 15 years. The new building is great! It is bigger, seems cleaner - and everyone seems happy with the new space. It is also easily accessible from several different areas and has plenty of ample parking. The front desk assistants are always friendly, and will help to answer any questions. I have always been able to make an appointment for the same day, or next day if needed. When my dog needed stool samples looked at, I was given the option to drop them off whenever, and I could even wait in the office while they were analyzed. The pricing is also very competitive - if not downright cheaper than most other vets. Dr. David Walker is as good as they get. The first thing my dog likes to do when he gets into the room is to lick his face for about 5 minutes. Dr. Walker has a great connection with the animals - a very calming one. He is careful to answer any and all questions, and has spent upwards of 45 minutes with me - making sure all my questions were answered about my new pup. Everyone here has become like family in the last few years - especially dealing with the end-of-life issues from my first childhood dog. They let us come in and visit her multiple times while she was fighting for her life, and let us have as much time as we needed when it came to letting her go. Looking back on it, I am so thankful to have such understanding and compassionate people there during such difficult times. I know that pets are family - so ask around, and try them out if it feels right. I have always recommended Dr. Walker to friends and family, and will continue to go to him for my vet needs. read more

I keep meaning to review gateway but for whatever reason I haven't yet - I've brought my nearly 10 year old Great Dane here for the last 6 years and will bring any future pets here. We've seen Dr. Walker mainly but we've seen the other vets when he wasn't available and the whole staff is wonderful and kind, I wouldn't hesitate to see any of them. They are also fantastic w. my timid old gal. She's not a super easy patient by any means but they do their best and make it as easy as possible for her, while still being thorough. All of the treatment has been outstanding, from problems that pop up, routine visits and surgery - she had a spay and gastropexy here years back (for those considering this for their big guys prone to bloat, I recommend this procedure 100%). She had some healing and bleeding issues afterwards and they always got her right in to adjust her wound care and also did thorough bloodwork. At some point Dr. Walker came out to meet me in the snow on the weekend to check her out, so they certainly have great concern and consideration for our pets. They're very reasonable, affordable and the care is excellent.. nothing more you can ask for from a vet. I'm lucky to live up the road but would travel if I need to in the future! read more

This is the best vet on the Main Line. The whole team, but especially Doctor Walker are caring, professional and actually affordable. Tried many vets around Chester County for my three rescue dogs and nobody compares! By the way, if you take your dog on a plane, Lynne at the office will get your USDA papers arranged ASAP. I have been taking my dogs to Dr. Walker and staff at Gateway for over 15 years. They are always accommodating to your schedule and seem to find the time to fit you in when you feel it is necessary to see a doctor (non-emergency). I have had a great experience with my older dog who was 15 1/2 years old. We recently had to deal with a cancer diagnosis from Dr. Walker and he made sure that we understood all of the parameters of the illness. With medication and palliative care she lived longer than her 6 month prognosis. They also helped make arrangements for her end of life care. We called this vet to ask for an appointment tomorrow and they said they had none. They said it was important that she see a vet soon (why did they think we called) so we should call some one else. I came to this office on the recommendation of a co-worker. I guess I should have let them know this, and maybe they would have been a little more welcoming. There are no social skills with the vets at this office. They do what they have to do, but honestly, I've never been treated more coldly by any healthcare professional. I don't think it's me, as I am also in healthcare, and I've learned how to shake someone's hand upon entering a room (not done here), and introduce myself (also not done here). I wasn't even sure if I was speaking to the vet or the vet technician when they walked into the room. This happened with both Dr Walker and Dr Brenner. The care that my cat received was adequate, but a lot was overlooked. If you know your pet, and don't agree with what you are told, you have to keep pushing for what you think should be done as far as tests, etc. Lesson learned. read more

Truly caring people work here, I've seen so many go above and beyond for the animals that come through the doors here, and the clients. The receptionist are amazing at multitasking,& giving you great customer service with a smile. Manager Lynne is old school because she's done this for 30+ years, but always advocates for all the patients and makes sure they get the best care. The vet techs/assistants all are working hard behind the scenes to care for the animals in a fear free way,& keep it all running smoothly. The 3 full time vets that work here are great, and all have their own style and personality's. All are great with diagnostics and care about the animals they treat. If something cannot be resolved in this practice they always refer to a great specialty practice that can in the area. The only real way it gets advertised is word of mouth,& there's no social media linked to it. Only downside is often they are closed to taking new patients or a few weeks out for appointments to them. That only is to have room for emergency appointments as needed for the current clients. This just is the sign of a good, busy practice that does the right thing. read more

When Hobiecat got cheek cancer, I pleaded with Dr. Dave about saving her. He very kindly told me it was hopeless - it would be awful to put her through treatment that couldn't cure her. And they were so kind when Hobiecat left us. Now we take P Kitty to the Gateway - all the doctors are outstanding. Puff mainly sees Dr. Shelley, but Dr. Amy is terrific as well. Dr. David Walker and the other vets at Gateway Animal Hospital have never been anything but wonderful to us and our Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Justin. We rescued Justin and he was (still is) a very anxious dog, very wary of strangers. We will never forget how Dr. Walker got down on the floor and spent time to earn Justin's trust and consequently became his friend for life. He referred us to the UPenn Behavior Clinic for his "issues", which was a very good experience. Justin's also seen Dr. Brenner and Dr. Herring both who both have been wonderful as well. (we currently have one dog and four cats and have had four other cats die of old age ranging from 17 to 20 years old). [While I feel for Amanda O's loss, I cannot see how Gateway can possibly be the "reason" that her "cat got really sick and died." The cat was sick with lymphoma. I read the reviews prior to coming in after hearing of Gateway from my patients. On the phone - I was told there wasn't an appointment for a week - but when I told them my Bassett had no use of his back legs, they got me right in. The staff was so nice and they got me right back. The doctor talked to me briefly - but mainly focused on my dog. After a quick xray - they gave me some meds for him and seemed genuinely concerned. Very nice facility and great team! read more

After our trusted vet of almost 40 years retired we needed to find another...a daunting experience when your 4-legged children are dependent upon you for providing the very best care. We interviewed and visited several facilities and ultimately decided on Gateway. We have since seen each of the 3 veterinarians in this practice and have nothing bad to say. We had to say goodbye to our senior dog only a couple of years later, but I've always believed that the service you receive during these most horrific times of pet ownership reveals the truth about any practice, and Dr. Amy Brenner solidified a place in our hearts and we will most definitely be returning with our new pup when he finally arrives. The staff is personable, professional and kind, and extended every courtesy to us each time we've been. I just reviewed another horrific experience with another vet, which prompted me to give praise where it is due because yesterday we took the exotic girls over to Dr. Shelley Rahe and received a thorough exam despite Covid limitations, which included both their weights and one of us accompanying them! And at more than 1/3 LESS than what the other poser charged, including a professional printed out itemized bill at the time of service that we didn't have to chase down!
