Garden products, plants and shrubs and trees are all good quality. Their pricing reflects the quality, but for major landscaping projects or large purchases like trees and shrubs it's worth it. Also, staff are very impressive in their depth of knowledge. The manager is sometimes a bit off. Don't catch him on a bad day. All the other staff are great and very friendly and willing to share advice. So overall, I think Gateway is is pretty good. read more

When planning my home orchard, I made sure to get the trees from Gateway; which had a very diverse selection. Never walk away empty handed, fantastic stock with knowledgable and helpful staff. This was 2 years ago. UPDATE: I have spent many trips each year enjoying my visits and purchases here. Sadly, until today. It is No More! I arrived, requested a standing shopping cart and was told they are gone and I could not have one. I tried to share that the standing carts assist those with disabilities. After finding one at the back of the property I was actually able to shop for my spring flowers and herbs. *At checkout I asked to speak to the Mgr (Rich) who expressed in no uncertain terms he wasn't interested in feedback from someone in the ADA community with physical challenges. Apparently people who are incapable, or just careless knock over, tip, or drop plants from these carts and then refuse to pay. Well snap!! So to not hold those who are responsible for what they take off the shelf and damage let's just ruin everything for those with physical disabilities. And by the way, absolutely zero ADA compliant parking by the front entrance, which on a weekday morning isn't a big deal, but on a busy day, means no accommodations. I guess this is no longer on my list of favorite springtime stops for all things green Sad, but I am sure I can find a garden center that cares about all patrons. read more

I'm not usually out this way, but if you live in this area, give it a go. The plant material looks fantastic, big selection (much larger than it looks from the road) with lots of hard to find varieties (such as Lewisia and a large native plant area). The staff is friendly and very helpful. Prices are a little high, but you get what you pay for and it's an independent. No restrooms, but perhaps the nicest portable one you've even seen. read more

Wowser, simply amazing customer service by Matt in the greenhouse! The best customer service anywhere in the last decade. Super nice, super duper knowledgeable. Very thorough, very helpful. Matt asked a lot of detailed questions about our raised beds, the soil, our summer plantings; oh my!From there he told us exactly how to remediate the soil to insure success. So many great winter vegetables to close from for our early spring vegetable garden. It think they had 12 lettuce varieties and he could describe each one to a T. As a previous reviewer wrote, this use to be a quality source for landscape plants (I miss Walker's in Hockessin, they were the best). But in recent years it has definitely declined. 3 examples: 1) My wife went there about a year ago to buy some plants. They appeared diseased, and she asked about their appearance. The sales person assured her that they would clear up and thrive once they were established in a permanent home. She didn't buy them, and when she got home she googled the plants. Whatever disease they had was described as fatal to the plant, and the only cure is to tear them out and get rid of them. So the person lied to her. Good thing she didn't buy the plants, since they now have a no-return policy. 2) Check out their prices on Christmas trees. They are about twice as high as anyone else around, for the same quality and size. I don't know why anyone would buy a Christmas tree here. 3) The owner (?) Pam? Pat? was rude to me the last time I was there. I have no tolerance for that. read more

We spent $1200 and had 3 extra shrubs, they would not allow us to return the shrubs, not even for store credit, we won't shop there again!!!

Friendly, helpful staff really go out of their way for you at Gateway. They have an excellent supply of plants, trees, and tropical plants in season. For me, Gateway's pond department has been an invaluable resource. Peg and Darlene are wonderful at diagnosing and fixing any pond problems you might (or in my case will) have. read more

This is the place to buy your plants. They have a very extensive selection and are available with helpful advice and plant knowledge for what might be best for your landscape. I have shopped here for years and have been very satisfied and I have beautiful plants and trees that were purchased here. They also carry fountains and great flower pots, garden tools, etc. Every year they have a jack o lantern display that brings out the community. Great local business! read more

Gateway used to be one of the top garden centers in the tri-state area. Over the last few years there has been a decline in choice and quality of materials. Often now what is available is not in the best condition.The staff is generally helpful and pleasant, which may convince you all is fine; however, the staff may fake knowledge about plants rather than have it, and management seems to have implemented what is effectively a no-refunds policy. If you buy a specimen that is diseased or terminally rootbound - especially something expensive and rare - you won't get your funds back when it dies. Explanations for why you're getting stiffed may be spacious. Don't even think about finding out which growers provided dodgy materials. Having been a gardener, plant enthusiast, and on the professional side of the landscape business many years back, I find it annoying and sad when a business with many loyal customers negatively changes their policies. read more

I have been a customer of Gateway Gardens for 20+ years. From my small kidney shaped koi pond 20 years ago to my 2500+ gallon rural koi pond that I've had since 2001, everything has been purchased here. I've shopped elsewhere, compared prices, talked to numerous sales "experts", but always, I come back to Gateway. I've never had a single fish die, their prices are excellent, their knowledge is unsurpassed, the sales staff is genuinely friendly, courteous and helpful, and they honestly care about their customers. knowledgeable staff will take the time to listen to your projects. the selection is where you will find plants that are not the usual ones from the Box Store home improvement center. all plants are incredibly healthy and not on their last legs. Gateway had been my first and last stop until I moved. I miss them a lot since I moved away. read more
