I recently visited this place wow leaving the Des Moines area and I thought I could find some good finds here just because I love seeing and visiting natural food stores. Overall, I was pretty underwhelmed with my experience just because it lasts a fair amount of items that I was hoping to find. The staff here was very friendly and I did like their selection of alcohol too. They didn't have too much of a crab and go selection either though they didn't have a nice little Bakery with some great vegan options. A decent selection of fresh produce. Easy access to the streets and Highway nearby which was the primary reason I came by too. Prices is here were a little Sky High too. Love this market! So many good health finds and vegan products. What I really come here for is this vegan fried chickn sandwich. I'm giving 5 stars because I really hope they make it a permanent menu item. There is nowhere else in town to get a good vegan chickn sandwich. However it is a little dry/bland. They only put vegan mayo on one side of the bun, idk about you guys but no bun should be without sauce/mayo. This is still a favorite place of mine for a quick lunch. It's close to downtown and has easy access to 1-235. My regular order now is the steak quesadilla. It is big enough for 2 people or two meals, has a generous amount of steak in it, and the salsa has enough heat to make it spicy but not overbearing. Reasonably priced at 12.99. I GREATLY miss the Korean steak sandwich and would beg the owners to bring it back! And it would be nice if they expanded their patio. It's a charred tiny piece and THEY FORGOT MY SIDE! I feel.so ripped off. No side of jalapeno creamed corn so a significant part of my meal is missing. Driving back 10 miles for it is not realistic. I love this place, a combination grocery store, and food market that is a superb option, whether you're headed to or from Des Moines Airport or in this section of town. Good customer service without going over the top, kind staff, and a great selection of items throughout the store, but the restaurant wows me with a long list of great options on their menu. Dropped in for lunch, enjoyed the vibe, not too loud or busy. We had the chicken cranberry salad wrap with onion rings and the French dip sandwich with fries, both were good and plenty large. The wrap was neatly assembled with the greens encircled by chicken salad. Chicken salad was fine but the mayo based dressing could use more depth of flavor such as honey or a bit of heat. I would have welcomed a bigger crunch with more celery and some walnuts in the chicken salad. The Craisins could have been a bigger flavor, too. The French Dip was very good. read more

Been coming to Gateway for years, and decided to go for lunch today. Ordered the Italian Beef and it was awful. The bread was stale and falling apart and there was hardly any meat on it. The menu said it had Giardiniera on it, but that was a miserable excuse for Giardiniera. Maybe rename it to onions and green peppers. The fries were really good and as always the ranch was delicious. I will go back, but do yourself a favor and stay away from this imposter of a sandwich. read more

What a cute little market. We popped in on a Saturday around 10:30 for a quick lunch with friends before we headed home to Iowa City. I was SO surprised at how busy the cafe side was. Holy line. This cafe has lots of seating options, but be warned there aren't a ton of good options for larger parties. The menu had something for everyone, it was reasonably priced and considering it was so jam packed-- service was prompt and kind. I was impressed with their sandwich and wrap menu, eventually opting on a tasty but messy Nashville hot chicken sandwich. There are plant-based and gluten-free options, stellar kid options and nothing fancy breakfast options. Parking was a non-issue. Everyone left comfortably full. No complaints here! I know a lot of people have the same disdain for delivery reviews as they have for chain restaurants or fast food reviews.... So if you're one of them you might want to just keep scrolling and skip this. But when it's done right... It can be a good thing. I ordered the large Pork Belly Cubano ($9.99 for the regular sized one...$11.99 for the large) with smoked ham, smoked pork belly, Swiss, pickle, onion, mayo, mustard, and baguette from Gateway through Foodsby. It comes with a pickle spear and a choice of sides. I went with a petite market salad (with blue cheese crumbles/dressing). The delivery was done pretty close to the quoted time (arrived at 1117 AM...initial estimated delivery was 1125 AM). The baguette had a nice grill on it to give the sandwich a good crunch. The meat was moist (get over it people) and very flavorful. The smokiness was subtle and not overpowering. All the salad components were nice and fresh. Nothing wilting and everything had a nice snap to it. It was nice surprise to have plenty of real blue cheese crumbles and not dressing flavored with a few crumbles mixed into it. I like a good Cuban. The layers give your mouth and taste buds the whole experience. First a nicely constructed Cuban takes your eyes on a journey of expectation. The crunch followed by softness and the taste of the bread, Swiss cheese, meats, pickle, mustard, etc. Each with it's own distinct and powerful flavor, but nicely melding together. I really can't think of a more perfect sandwich... Maybe a cheesesteak? One thought I had was I'm not sure the mayo was needed. It didn't really add a lot to the sandwich, but it did add some unnecessary mess. That being said it didn't really take away from the fundamental taste. I might ask for it to be held next time just to compare. My pickle spear was forgotten with my order...but that's easily forgiven. I'm pretty darn full without it. And honestly... Dinging a restaurant on something like a pickle spear.... That's kind of a dick move. I can't speak for in-person service, seating, handicapped accessibility, bathroom cleanliness, parking, etc., because...delivery. But I can say the food I received was quality and it was all VERY good. read more

Great concept with having all sorts of different variety of foods for plant based and not. I appreciate the plant based/vegan options. This last visit, I had the large bowl of veggie chili (vegan) with South Union focaccia bread, fried flour chips with guacamole, and unsweetened raspberry ice tea. I spent $15.xx for myself. I felt they were large portions. I was not satisfied with how the chili tasted. It had tiny pasta in it that probably got burned in their simmering pot. The chili tasted burned. I asked about it and the servers said it tasted normal. Yikes. Chips were over cooked and guacamole was good. Tea was low in container and I had to ask for more. I had their pad thai and falafel flat bread in the past. And they weren't that great for me either. Service was ok. Cashier was helpful and friendly. Other workers were nice and happy to help. I dined with a party of 9 and we ordered quickly. Orders took 20 min to receive. Majority of my friends eat there regularly and the others who don't, said it was ok. I'm a long time eater of Gateway, but ever since they removed the chicken pot pie off the menu it's been downhill since. The poke bowls were great until the sushi chef left. Worth the 231 mile drive to get here! One of my favorite stops between MN and TX. Food 5 - Foodie heaven. Nothing like a grapefruit gelato on a hot summer day to keep us going. Grocery items are a bit pricey, but they do have a really unique selection. Ambiance 5 - great lighting, great decor, great displays and very funky architecture. Parking 5 - easy to find a spot Service 3 - staff at the gelato counter was meh. Nothing memorable or outstanding and you'd expect a bit of a wow factor when you're paying a premium price and the rest of the experience has such a wow factor. I ordered a cheeseburger. Came without cheese. I told them and they simply put a cold piece of cheese on top of my burger. I paid for sweet potato fries and they were cold not even warm. I said to the gal at counter that's just silly to put a cold piece of cheese on my burger. As I was walking away, she sarcastically made a comment to the next customer about me. That is so unacceptable. That kind of thing just ruins my night. No customer service whatsoever - not to mention the belittling that I received as I was leaving. Recently I tried the brussel sprouts, fish tacos, and the Cantonese stir fry. I enjoyed the fish tacos and noodles a lot!
