Grocery stores are the lifeblood of a community, and Des Moines is so lucky to have La Tapatia! The staff and product mix here make me a big fan! I went in searching for frozen empanada dough, and Aji Amarillo. The former was easy enough to find (thank you, Goya), but even my Peruvian American friend from Chicago warned me that it's hard to find the Hot Yellow Peppers, critical to the Aji de Gallina dish from her native country that I wanted to make. And sure enough, I couldn't find it after walking all through the store! La Tapatia staff to the rescue: Through a mix of English, Spanish, and pointing-to-pictures-on-my-phone -- the staff made it a mission to help me find the Aji Amarillo. This store is very clean. The meat selection is great. So many to choose from. I like to come here for the ready to go food. There's a counter where you can get warm food like roasted chicken, carnitas and more. There's also a counter where you can get delicious corn, mango, and ice cream. The workers were very helpful. I was soooooooo stoked when I found out this place existed. I can't even tell you how much. Stores like this are all over the place in LA, and I really believed that that was a part of my life that was just gone for me once moving to Iowa. Enter La Tapatia! I did a google search for "homemade tortillas" in the hopes of finding a restaurant that had them. I came across La Tapatia. I wasn't familiar with the area, so I plugged it into maps, and set off. First thing, I DIED LAUGHING, legit tears, because the fembot voice reading my route aloud via my phone spit out, "Starting route to, La Tuh Pay Shuh, Market..." This set in stone what this place in now called by everyone in my house, despite the fact that we all know better. La Tuh Pay Shuh for life! Anyway, literally everything is good here. Their hot deli area has insane carnitas and tamales. The cold deli has bonkers ceviche, and three different kinds of it! Their homemade tortillas are excellent. Their panaderia is extensive and awesome and I love it so much. Oh, and they have an entire aisle of Mexican candy!!! Give me all the lead, I don't even care. Dude. taco truck right outside this bodega (thank you google translate)! Legit (fiar). This grocery store is where it's at for my Mexican needs. Although, I don't have too much of that... They really have anything you want though! From jalapenos to candy to meat to aspirin! It's actually very neat and fairly clean. In the back of the store you will find their ready made food. There was quite a line back there so it must be good. Can't vouch for it because I haven't tasted it myself. The staff is super cool... even though they made fun of me and had a hard time understanding me when I was asking them where their Horchata was. It took a while, but we eventually got there! I practiced that word for the rest of the night, so if anyone needs help finding, saying, or anything that has to do with horchata, hit me up! read more

We used to only come for the elotas (the corn on a stick with cheese), I could never get enough of them. The staff consists many of non-English speakers, but if you are just buying sonething you dont really need to interact with the staff. read more

Yeaaah! You can not imagine my surprise when I found a true, authentic, Mexican grocery in the middle of Iowa of all places. We were literally the only gringos in there, which to me is a big sign that this is good stuff. I stopped by La Tapatia on a visit back to Des Moines this past weekend to see what they had and was pleasantly surprised. Ordered some taquitos with papas and carne de res inside that were superb, and only $3 for 6 of them. The man at the counter was so surprised to hear me speaking Spanish he decided to have a long conversation with me. The produce looked great and the prices were definitely reasonable. Living in Portland I thought I had seen a really good Mexican store in the states but this takes the cake... bien hecho, La Tapatia! read more

This grocery store has SOOOOOOO much stuff I can't even pin point which one to talk about! They have a lot of imported goods and a large selection of fresh fruits/vegetables. They also have a fried section of what appeared to me as pork rinds (self serve). They also had a butcher on staff so you can order any raw meats available. They even have a bakery in this store with lots of yummie baked goods (don't worry, its on the opposite side of the raw meats section). There's so many packaged goods too from drinks, to snacks, to sauces, and anything Mexican! read more

I was looking for some fresh ingredients (xoconostle fruit and aloe leaf) and was happy to find them here. This is a large grocery store and not just a market. They have a huge selection of meats and fish and bakery items too. I had to bring out my high school Spanish to communicate with two of the employees but everyone is happy to help you find items and even helped me do the self check out. Oh La tapatia. I used to like this store back in the late 90s when it used to be on east grand ave. I was super excited when they expanded....But not so much with how the prices were increased ...And kept increasing. Don't believe it? Buy a Queso fresco at la tapatia then at Walmart...And it's so much lower at Walmart. Even at other Mexican stores it's cheaper. These prices apply to most, if not all, things. Many people don't shop here because of that. I'll admit it has some pros: vast selection, great cleanliness, and more technology than other stores. It also has your ever watching security guards, one whom I met momentarily a few nights ago. At 9:53pm I arrived at la tapatia's parking lot. The things to buy? 3 avocados. Well, as I'm trying to get in the store, the doors were locked and a security guard stood behind them. I pointed at my phone showcasing the big 9:54pm. He shook his head. I said it's not 10pm and I only need 3 avocados. He still wouldn't let me in, despite I saw people still shopping and going through the register. I quickly called the store. The person who answered said she was in the office and didn't know what was happening at the front of the store. I said where is your manager? She said he is not here at the moment and therefore she couldn't do anything. If the security guy had at least bothered to talk to me instead of starring me down through their see through doors, I might just left on my own. But this is a business, not a prison. Customer service should come first, not militarism. read more

I may be a little weird, but I love grocery stores! This one is very clean and everyone is very friendly- I think - at least they smile when I walk by. I love to pick up spices, fresh peppers, sausage and bakery items whenever we are in town. I have read some of the other reviews and I plan on trying some of their ready to eat items next time. This was the grocery "around the corner" so to speak when I lived in the area. My spoken spanish is almost non-existent due to lack of use for 8-10 years, so thankfully most of the cashiers speak english, and the aisles are wide enough that people can get around instead of running into me while I'm trying to puzzle out the labels on some items. lol! It certainly can be an adventure to try out various food that you're somewhat uncertain about, but beware, some of it his HIGHLY ADDICTIVE. If you're not so adventurous, you can find plenty of ordinary staples to use for cooking up ordinary american food, so no worries there. And, icing on the cake, the taco truck is outside if you need to refuel after your shopping adventure. read more

Buyer beware. Bought a blanket from this store ..opened it to wash it and there was baby roaches all over the blanket and all in the bag. Now we have to treat our home for roaches. All they said was bring it back for a refund. I guess roaches are no big deal. read more

For a tienda mexicana, this is the best I have ever, I repeat, ever seen in the US. It really surprises me that we have such a great mexican market in Des Moines of all places. They have many of the same selections you would find at your normal grocery store, like produce, canned good, toiletries,etc, but they may have the spanish world version instead. The thing that makes this place so great is their little stand at the front where they serve street style food, I love to get the fruit cup con limon y chile. Its the best thing ever! The bakery doesn't disappoint either, if you are a newbie at mexican treats, I suggest churros and empanadas, but everything I've had there is awesome! The meat counter is rad, get the chicarones while they are hot and fresh, and their carnitas are sooooo delicious. I guess you get the picture, I love this place, its a great place to get great food, or get the ingredients to make great food. read more

We moved to Iowa from Mexico and I was thrilled to find this grocery that carries most everything I was looking for from fresh Nopales (cactus) & epazote (a fresh herb I can not find anywhere else, an essential ingredient to sopa de tortilla) and my favorite brand of crema and fresh baked conchas and every variety of dried chiles I felt as though I was back in the DF! read more

This is an awesome store but the staff needs improvement. I went there because I heard about it and was nicely suprised I could find everything I needed and then some. The staff, however, weren't as great as the store. I needed a tamale pot that was on top of a freezer case. I asked a girl for some help with getting it down. She said she would find someone one to help me with a ladder or step ladder and walked away. Ok fine, I can wait. 5 minutes later.....10 minutes later I saw the same girl I asked for help chatting it up with some of her coworkers at the front register. I still had no one come to help me so I'm fairly certain she just blew me off. I coudlnt very well leave because I needed that pot. So being that Im resourceful, I grabbed a broom from teh next aisle and pulled down the pot while all the staff watched. None of them said a word nor did they bother to help me even after they saw what I was doing. Myabe if the staff would actually pay attention to their customers I would actually rate this higher and shop there more often. read more

i love thsi store its the best in iowa. also its like walkin in a store in mexico. the people who work there are so nice.thank god i speak Spanish.i think i was the only white person in there.well i love their mole. and mexican rice. the pre made food is so good. i stop in once a month. and never leave empty handed. i live 1 hr away and i just called and ordered mole. cas it wont be on the menu tomorrow.they also have a cut off section for them mexican sno cones. if u like mango or what ever the mexicans like to drink u will love it.i dont lol. and they have fresh bread section. and a huge cheese mexican cheese yes the cheese they bring back yuck from mexico. u mexicans know what im talkin about.the veggies are always turned so its always fresh.wow there is just so much i cant put it all in the review. there is plenty of parking and they cater to handi cap.. so ya 5 star rate here.... read more
