I stopped into Wang's last night for the first time. I found the market to be a little cluttered, but clean. The items in stock were plentiful for a smaller store. I walked out with some frozen pork lumpia, frozen kimbap, frozen Korean cheese corn dog, and some Nongshim gochujang shrimp crackers. My total was $36 and change. Some items were $1 or so above MSRP and some were $1 below according to Google. In line for a smaller market that doesn't order/carry huge quantities. Parking is easy with a them being in a business strip with a large lot. The owners were polite and courteous. I was greeted when I walked in and thanked when I left. She even threw in a couple of free small boxed milk drinks for paying with cash... It's nice to have for convenience here on the West side when you don't want to make the drive to C Fresh, Double Dragon, or Golden Land. And yes... In the past my inner child has had a field day with the name. Just like A Dong... But that's just me I'm betting. Lol read more

While this isn't the most economical Asian market in town, they do have a fairly wide selection of items. I was quite surprised at how much they got into such a small space. I found what I wanted and a few things besides. You must spend at least $10 to use a credit card, so plan accordingly. The person running the store was helpful and offered advice and suggestions and even recipe ideas based on what I purchased. read more

My first experience here wasn't good. The selection is decent but unfortunately mostly not very competitive with other Asian Markets in the area (C Fresh, Double Dragon). This would be enough for me to give them 3 stars, but unfortunately I found that one of the products I bought (shallot sauce) was expired for a year, which isn't the first time this has happened according to past reviews. I had only noticed it after I bought it and was able to confirm it with the date on the lid. While I'm glad I was given a refund, the owner was angry at me and refused to let me buy another of the same product -- accusing me of only returning it because I didn't like it, effectively calling me a lier, despite the expiration date being visible on the lid. In hindsight, I should have shown a picture of the lid here for further proof. I probably would have also noticed that the lid was popped (indicating expiration), but based on this experience, I wouldn't be surprised if the owner tried to accuse me of opening it in store. I've never had this experience with trying to get support after receiving an expired product. Management, I would recommend against assuming every customer that points out an issue with a product has bad intentions. If you were just upset about losing money on an expired product, I can empathize with that, especially given these times, but lashing out at the customer doesn't solve anything at best. read more

I have been using Wang's for years. They are a small shop with a lot of options. With the owners being Korean and Chinese they have a great selection of Korean items and Korean made items. I have been able to find so many great options there. The Chinese variety is also good. They have many traditional ingredients. I always get great service. The store is a bit cluttered but very clean. I trust the quality of the items I buy. Other markets in town may have a bit lower prices or greater variety, but I also trust the quality and age of those stores much less. Wang's gets shipments frequently so items are fresh. read more

Great place. If you need something quick and are on the west side of town this is the place to go. They got everything you need for a hot pot or whatever other food adventure you are up to. Good place if you're after something specific. Prices are higher than other Asian Markets I've been to in the metro, but it's easy to quickly run in and grab a thing or two. It's small and jammed packed with specialty items, but they also have stuff you could get at HyVee. If you're in the area, it worth the stop to give them a try. read more

After reading some really obnoxious reviews about Wangs, I felt I needed to write one myself. This is, by far, one of the least "scary" Asian markets I've been in. I've lived in Orlando FL, Miami FL, Charlotte NC and Topeka/KC KS.... so I feel like I have some basis of comparison. I'm not going to name them by names, but many other stores I've been in this area or elsewhere make you feel extremely unwelcome. The owners of Wang's don't speak the best English, but they've always been friendly to me. And really... some of you are going to knock the place for not accepting credit/debt for less than $10.00? Try combining your trips or something. Are the prices higher ... well I would agree some items are a bit pricy. That said I do know the owner often has to obtain their product from the Chicago area and transport it. If you haven't noticed, Des Moines isn't exactly the "port of entry" for all things Asian. Convenient spot for those in the Urbandale/Clive area. Many items are a bit overpriced as others have mentioned but the selection is pretty amazing for such a small store. I go there often to get their largest size jar of kim chee, which is the best deal I've find by far. I've found the kim chee pretty expensive in other "Western" markets. I completely agree that this store is extremely expensive. $10 for a bag of potstickers?!?! I can get it in Chicago for half that. Sesame oil for $5?? Again, cheaper in Chicago. Luckily for me I can just bring it from Chicago but for anyone that cant, this store might just have to be the place to buy what you want. From a Des Moines perspective, I give it a four stars because it's the only place in the Des Moines area that really has any Korean ingredients. Yes, it is overpriced--especially if you've shopped at Asian grocery markets in Chicago, California, etc. The owner is very nice and personable. She personally remembers my face whenever I go in. She will help me find food and give me suggestions as I shop. If you want anything that is non-Korean or Japanese, I would recommend going to Double Dragon in Des Moines instead because it will be fresher and cheaper. If you want specifically Korean, Japanese, or live closer to Wang's---this is fine. It is a nice clean and organized shop. It's usually not crowded, so you won't have to wait long in line to check out. It's also the only place in Des Moines that sells the signature Korean stone bowls!! :) read more

I went here for the first time after I returned from spending the summer abroad in China, and I was looking for the ingredients to make some food for my family. The staff was super helpful and the store was very organized! The lady that checked me out at the counter even asked if this was my first time there and made me feel very appreciated. Like others have said, this place is a little pricier compared to the other Asian grocery stores around town. But on the plus side, Wang's has a lot of little goodies I can't find anywhere else in Des Moines. If you are looking for more East Asian items (Japanese, Korean) this is a good place to go. The store is also clean and the owner is exceptionally friendly. I live in Urbandale so the location is very convenient, because the bigger Asian stores are a bit of a drive for me. Some things that I get at Wang's that I can't find at other Asian stores: -Instant Mentaiko (cod roe) spaghetti mix. Wangs definitely isn't the cheapest Asian market in DeMo. But if you live on the west side it's the closest. It's the only place I found Korean items in Des Moines other then Korean marinades. The store is much cleaner and less smelly then other Asians market that's for sure. My favs are downtown and when I'm in the area or have time that's where I go. The owners here are very friendly and helpful when I have no clue what I need, but have an idea about a dish I want to prepare. I'm a huge fan of ramen and the selection here of different ramen varieties is almost to much, but I always seem to find a new favorite. This is the only asian market I have been to so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I found the convenience and service to be appealing. I was simply shopping for miso soup ingredients and had done some searching online before going here and I found the prices comparable, but if you can get free shipping it would be cheaper. Also, note that you can only use your credit card if you are purchasing $10 or more. There were some items that I noticed while I was there that I know I could get cheaper at my local grocery store: i.e. sauces and rice. There was a slight odor in the store that I was not used to, but it was not overwhelming. I may try my skills at making some basic maki sushi rolls and I will be heading back here. read more

I get my pancit noodles here. I learned to make pancit while I was working with Filipino staff members at a rehab facility in Central California. So I learned & tweaked the recipe- after moving back to the Midwest-I had a awful time trying to find those noodles- The Wang's are great people! I am giving Wang's a second star for the convenience of having an Asian store in Urbandale. The prices are ridiculous ... $7 for a bottle of fish sauce, $8 for curry sauce, and over $3 for coconut milk -- just a few examples. If you have the time to hit another store in Des Moines, do yourself that favor. If you are new to Asian grocery stores, do not base your opinion of store owners on these folks ... they are not friendly or patient, at least with Americans. Most other Asian AND Indian stores I have been in are far friendlier!! read more

I went to Wang's twice to buy bubble tea supplies. The clerk remembered me and asked how I liked my tea. I told her how my friends and family just love it and we are all going to buy the supplies to make it. So, on my 3rd and final trip to get supplies I was shocked to find that EVERYTHING I use to make my tea had dramatically increased in price - if not doubled in price. Needless to say I only bought a few ingredients, and when I got home discovered was overcharged by $2 . I wondered why her demeanor changed. She got really nervous and acted weird. They key in all of the prices, so I am guessing if she overcharges $2 on everyones first item she rings up, they wont notice. I will not go back. read more
