I brought my Prius here for service for a couple years after moving to Edmonton from San Diego, and they did a decent job of service - certainly better than Toyota on the Trail who were truly abysmal. However, I recently decided it was time to look at a car more suited to Edmonton winter weather, and spoke to a salesman (Mark) about some used RAV4s they had in stock while I was there for a service for my Prius. After we spoke at the dealership, we exchanged a few emails. He asked if I'd be paying cash or finance. I asked what the pros and cons were... and got a copy-pasted email back seriously explaining "if you pay cash, you will have less on hand" and "there is interest if you finance". Uhh... duh? I'm unsure if he is just such a terrible saleman in general that he could not even understand a customer would be asking what incentives he could offer if I went for their preferred payment type (surely that's a question they must hear weekly at least), or if he specifically decided that I personally looked like an idiot, but either way he assumed a woman in her 40s needed an explanation of how cash works...? He had two similar RAV4s available and immediately tried to sell me the one with the higher mileage but not significantly lower price. When I asked why anyone would choose the higher mileage model he laughed and agreed the other one was a much better deal. So... why did you try to interest me in that one first, then? Again, making it pretty clear he thought I was an idiot? After I did test drive the vehicle and got a mechanic friend to look at it while I was out, I pointed out some damage and the wear on the tires, and suggested a significantly lower price that my mechanic friend suggested. He didn't look impressed, but I asked him to think it over, and if he could come close to that price I'd sign the papers immediately. Was it a lowball price? Yes, of course it was. This is how negotiation works. My expectation was that he'd come back with another price suggestion. In actuality, I never even heard from him again, not even a "no thanks" email, just silence. Given that his attitude had already disinclined me to be in the slightest bit sympathetic, and considering how many used RAV4 models are out there, I decided to look elsewhere and eventually purchased a similar model RAV4 from Rally Subaru. And I will not be returning to Gateway Toyota. Overall verdict: not the worst Toyota dealer for service. But possibly the worst Toyota dealer for sales rep attitude. Or at least, if you do go here, pick your sales rep carefully. read more

We want to give a huge shout out to Gateway and their amazing service staff, especially Troy Vinthers. We had our vehicles fuel tank sugared which resulted in it needing the entire system replaced. Troy was our key point of contact at Gateway. He went above and beyond to communicate with us and keep us in the loop regarding our vehicle. Whether is was parts delays, or insurance delays, he kept us up to date and at ease during an insanely stressful situation. When we found out one of the parts is delayed with absolutely no date when it may be available, he sought out an alternate option, resulting in our repairs only taking a few week instead of a few months to a year. I cannot say enough about all the ways the whole staff made us feel important and worked hard to make the process smooth and as quick as possible for us. I have been a long-time customer of Gateway Toyota (since 2012) and have always brought my Tacoma to Gateway for all my services and repairs. Most of the time it has been great, with only a few issues/incidents that were excusable. I've noticed the quality of mechanics has been in decline in the last couple years and honestly so has my trust in who is working on my truck and what services are being recommended. After the last (3ish) visits, I started to notice extensive and very costly repairs are being pushed more regularly and more aggressively. The last visit had over $5,000 in recommended repairs, and the most recent visit (July 26th) had nearly $9,000 in recommended services! Some of them are justified, but the over-charging on the parts is has become more and more obvious. For example: - Leaf spring repair: Parts quoted for $1,341.48, I can get these parts for ~$900 from Toyotapartsdirect - Rear spring removal: Another recommended service which stated: "may have to cut to remove rear springs due to bolts being seized", quoted at $1,233.96. This is part of the same job as the one listed above. Making this look like two separate jobs that are actually the same (on speculation that they *may be seized), bringing that job total to $3,055.84. If I signed and agreed to this repair, regardless if the hardware was seized or not, I would have been undoubtedly charged for it... - Power steering flush: Quoted at $210.98. Had they actually checked, this they would have realized the fluid is brand new (changed less than a month ago). - This is the one that REALLY sets me off. When I came in on July 26th, I had mentioned to the service tech that I noticed the tie-rod boot was either torn or the clamp fell off. I asked them to inspect and replace the boot if needed; (you know, while they were conveniently already taking the tires off for a scheduled rotation). Instead, they doubled down and said "no you have to replace the entire steering rack assembly" for $2,171.37 instead of a more cost-effective solution of replacing a $39.22 piece of rubber and a $0.50 hose clamp. The steering on my truck is incredibly smooth, and absolutely does not need to be replaced despite being pressured by the tech that I urgently need to replace the whole assembly. So, instead of reattaching/or replacing the boot like I asked, they just left it hanging which will allow water to get into the joints, likely resulting in rust, which will guarantee it will need to be replaced very soon... There is more to this story: a few years ago (approximately 60,000kms prior to today) my steering rack started leaking so Gateway Toyota recommended it be replaced, which I gave them the permission to do. After I got the truck back, it was profusely leaking oil from the steering rack and was knocking when I turned the wheel, so I brought it back the same day. Gateway Toyota apologized and made arrangements to have it serviced on a Saturday. They blamed it on a "faulty replacement part". Here we are 60,000km later and on my third steering rack, and Gateway is recommending I fork over another $2,200 for a replacement, which would be the 4th steering rack installed in my Tacoma in just over 200,000kms. A general FYI, a steering rack wearing out before 160,000km would be considered premature. So from this, I have concluded that Gateway Toyota is intentionally trying take advantage of customers by pressuring and recommending expensive repairs to maximize their service department profits. It either that, or their service department just simply performs lower quality work these days that requires replacement parts to be replaced even more frequently. I'm going to end here with this, I have completely lost trust in Gateway Toyota's dealership, and more specifically the service department. With the examples listed above alone, I don't know why anyone would take their vehicle here. I reached out to the service manager directly a few days after service and was assured that this was being investigated, but I haven't heard anything back now for almost a month... Very disappointed. read more

Sadly, I am booking my truck in for a third service appointment within a week and a half as a new issue with the Tacoma not starting after using the car starter has arisen. I've owned several Toyota's and purchase at several dealerships. This is by far the worst dealership for sales. They play games, set prices and then change them, tell you they can get a vehicle in if you put down a deposit, the date comes and still no car. Have to wait another month for it to show. I have up a deal at another dealership to go with this one and now I'm stuck. Service department is good. They are all friendly and on top of things, but stay away from sales here. Slime. read more

Toyota Gateway Complaint Just under two years ago (Sept 2020) I signed a contract with Gateway to purchase a RAV4. I put down a deposit and waited patiently. In late March I was called and told that my vehicle would be in in mid April by the sales manager Rick Janes. I then went early April in and put an additional deposit down. I sold my other vehicle as I expected delivery of the RAV4 within 2-3 weeks. It didn't arrive and the was told early May. It didn't arrive in early May and was then told probably the 3rd week in May. When I questioned the sales manager he said " but I didn't guarantee it." I then talked to the GM Chris Schulz and he was the most arrogant person I have ever dealt with. I questioned him on providing a rental or a if they would do anything on the price due to the inconvenience and us potentially having to rent a vehicle, He said no and basically said I could take the vehicle or leave it. I asked him who he reported to and he said his wife. I then told him I was going to write a bad review of him and the dealership to which he replied " for sure I won't do anything for you". I wrote the review on rate your dealership and the next day he called me and voided my contract. I told him I didn't want the contacted cancelled and he never asked me if I wanted the contact cancelled. Chris Schulz is a bully and used his power to try and make me pay for the bad review. great location. great cars. baaad salesperson...i have been there once and i am absolutely a customer that will purchase a car in a couple of days. i kept telling the guy(chris) that ; i am interested in the base model of sienna, have just moved in from california,have had ultra luxury cars like brand new bmw 7 series and mercedes s series and what i need is base model sienna for family and will compare that to honda odyssey and i specifically indicated whatever is under 50k dollars is all same for me because they wont meet my expectations luxury wise anyway..so cheaper the better for me as long as it is 2012 or 13 and around 40k kms...and something that costs around 25000 dollars.. the guy kept telling me "he doesn't believe it and if i see a honda that has more features i will change my mind and he will lose a sale"... and i told him "if you give me an idea about what kind of deal i will get from you, that will help me make my decision to either come back here or stay in honda" and he keeps telling me "he doesnt believe that i will come back". i dont know what i should have done..promising on my holy book? promising on my life?wtf.. As a SUMMARY, they need more interpersonal communication skills to really understand and solve a customer. it is not a rocket science and required items to succeed is brain and ears.. here comes an advice: to be a good sales representative, you need to UNDERSTAND a customer and serve his/her needs. you can not assume too much from what you called your "own experience" and tell your customer what he wants just to sell 30.000 dollars car instead of 25000, while he is insisting on the 25's specifications..Because at the end you just piss off your customer and he doesn't buy a scooter from you...(i was very tired to answer you and talk to your manager by the way, i wish i did so i wouldnt be pissed now)... and more importantly, you will be the one who get pissed for not meeting your sales quota to live off and you get more pissed but you are stuck at the same job..its a vicious cycle..break that cycle.. so , take my advive and dont be too pushy about what you want to sell and LISTEN your customers. English may be their second or third language but they may be way better than you in terms of language, education, etc... I went here to buy a used car and it was around closing time. I was interested in the car and the finance advisor suggested that we do a credit check to see if I was approved and then after I could make a decision if I wanted the car or not. To do the credit check, the dealership asked for a 500$ deposit. Never did they mention that it was not refundable. The next day, the finance advisor told me that my credit was approved for financement and that I could come pick up the car. At this point, I am confused because I am not even sure that I want the car and this guy is telling me that I already bought it. Turns out, the papers that I signed (without reading) says that if the financing is approved the car is automatically mine and that if I don't take the car, the 500$ is not refundable. I am actually in the process of getting my money back with the help of AMVIC. But I am very dissatisfied with their service. No integrity, no honesty, very pushy sales tactics. I had given my car for the service and im sure there should be a process within their service deptt to check the overall condition which includes whether the lights and tires are in working condition or not. But this is the 2nd time, they didn't check and my lights were not functioning after they did the service. Moreover when I spoke to the service person who assists the customer (Stephanie), she was bit un-professional and was saying they did check and this must have happened just before I took my car. I recently looked at a used car on their lot and during negotiations the salesman told me that they could eliminate the $495 administration fee if I paid sticker price.AMVIC regulations say that no additional charge other than gst can be added to the advertised price. I called him on it and he admitted it was a cash grab but he is just an employee. I asked him if they were not willing to drop the sticker price if he could include a discounted set of winter tires. He quoted me a price that was more than I would pay if I walked in off the street! Needless to say, I decided to take my business elsewhere and I would encourage you to do the same. We went in to see the car one of our kids had picked out. The 'manager' had asked him what his budget was and had found a payment that 'fit' his budget. When we went in they showed him a paper with the purchase price of the car and his payment. That's all - no breakdown of deposit, interest rate etc. We questioned the sales rep about that. Suddenly the manager appeared and said they had worked it out on a 18.99% interest rate as they ' thought' he wouldn't have much credit history. They were very aggressive about it and we walked out. 15 minutes later they texted him and said they could do it at 8.99%. It was so sleazy that I felt like I needed a shower after being there. In addition: They withheld the out of province inspection and they charged him an etching fee of $499 that they claimed was mandatory - (we checked with AMVIC and it's a total scam). Do yourself a favour and never ever set foot in this dealership. It can only be this sleazy if the owners approve of this behaviour. read more

My wife found the exact car we were looking for at Gateway Toyota in Edmonton at an excellent price. Unfortunately we live in Nova Scotia and I didn't feel like flying to Edmonton to inspect it. I contacted Gateway and spoke with their salesman, Peter Margiotta. Mr. Margiotta assured me that, with the exception of a very minor dent , the 2017 Sienna Limited was in mint condition. He said that it could be shipped to Nova Scotia and they would put $1000 to the shipping costs and give me a 30 day warranty through an affiliate dealer. I agreed to the purchase and the arrangements were made. We received the van a few weeks later exactly as described, if not significantly better. Mr. Margiotta, over a three month period, has contacted me on two occasions to ensure that all was well and that we were happy with the vehicle. The care and service I received was exceptional and I have not met a single person face to face. I was very impressed with the professionalism of everyone at Gateway with whom I had contact, particularly Mr. Margiotta. read more

I was looking for a used Corolla and Gateway Toyota had quite a few on their website. I went to the dealership with my dad and my husband. We were told the pre-owned centre was a few blocks away. Headed over there and found the Corollas. There were approx. 10 of them, and half of them were cut immediately as they had very visible damage that I did not want to bother fixing. Hail damage, rust, scratches, etc. Keep in mind I was looking for a newer car, 2009 and up, so this type of damage is not something I wanted to take in stride. We were talking with one of the salesmen and also had some time to look on our own. He kept running in and grabbing keys for us before we even told him if we liked any or not. We decided to take a look at some Yaris' as none of the Corollas were really grabbing us. There were only two sedans that I was interested in, and one of them was rusted to crap. We decided to take the other one, a 2010, for a test drive. The salesman had to get a battery booster to start the battery - not a good sign! He gave us some line about the remote starter always being on standby so it drains the battery. My dad and my husband are both major cars guys, and they weren't buying it. We took it for a test drive anyways to see if I liked the feel of a Yaris. The salesman came with us and sat in the back seat. I drove it for a bit and then my dad gave it a whirl. Remember, he's a trained mechanic. He mentioned he noticed some vibrations in the steering wheel, which would be due to a mechanical problem. The salesman tried to say it was because of flat spots in the tires, but that doesn't happen with new tires. Remember, two car guys. I never felt pressure from the salesman to buy anything, but none of us really appreciated the lies. It's too bad when used car salesmen live up to their stereotype. If I'm going to spend more than ten thousand dollars on a car that is only two or three years old, don't sell me a lemon that is going to have major problems the day I drive it home. He kept telling us he'd "get his technician to look at it", but they already knew the problem and I'm not sure the technician would be totally honest, either. Of course, being a dealership, the prices were at least $2000 more than private sellers. Needless to say, we didn't buy anything from Gateway and continued our search. read more

Don't bother booking a service appointment ahead of time because its irrelevant to them, they work at their own pace and might not look at your vehicle until three hours later. At least they have free wifi, that made the wait go by a little quicker and also gave me some time to write this review. EDIT: After expressing my extreme dissatisfaction, the service managers' efforts to reach out to me and apologize as well as rectify the issue is something that should not be overlooked. I was impressed with the quick action of the manager to correct the issue through compensation as well as her acknowledgement that it was something that should not have happened to begin with. read more

My Boyfriend was told to take my car here because of the shop trans-break where I had first gotten my timing belt done told him to take it there because that's where all the Saturn guys went to. Trans-Break said they thought it was my transmission. Sun Toyota Service then went and said it was my transmission, without even hooking it up to a computer and charged me $120. Was thinking about going to get it done being it was a $2200 fix. Went and ad to pay for parts up from the $1005 for the transmission... get a call back 2 hours later saying they were wrong and that they were going to eat yup the price on the cost and neither the parts or Toyota were going to make any money but rather its going to be a $4200 fix. I went to Ammco Transmission before taking my deposit back and they said they think it was the timing belt that something was off. So with no hesitation These guys didn't even look in to my problem and were ready to take $4200 and not even fix my problem and so I would have another problem afterwards to be fixed. Jen was such a great help in helping me find my first vehicle. She was knowledgable and wasn't pushy in her salesmanship. I went to a few other dealerships prior and I found that the salesmen just wanted to make a quick sale. Jen listened to what I wanted in a vehicle and found a perfect match at the cost I could afford. I took my 1997 Camry in to have an exhaust noise fixed. I was told beforehand that if I didn't get it fixed there would be a $75 inspection fee. When they called me they told me all they could do is replace the entire exhaust system for $2200! I was really angry, I just wanted it fixed. I took my car to a muffler shop and they fixed it for $111. Toyota said they didn't have the welders to fix pieces like that and that's why they suggested I go to a smaller shop. I paid Toyota 75% of the final repair price just for an estimate! I called them about it and they gave me a $75 credit for parts/service, very nice because they really didn't have to. Ok, where do I begin? So from time to time whenever a friend or colleague of mine asks if they could help me into getting a new vehicle for himself. I would normally jump into notion of helping friends because who wouldn't want to see and experience getting into a new car. Since I previously have gone through the experience myself which unfortunately wasn't a good one. I would get into the habit of doing my homework first. Normally that would be enough to help my friends get into a new car. And we all have a good day afterwards. I normally wouldn't do a review on any dealer just let people around me know about the good or bad experiences me or my friends have with a particular dealer. But by far this has been the worst for me. A friend of mine have had good experience with the dealership which gain my confidence in checking out the dealership myself for a friend of mine. He was interested in the Toyota Rav 4 LE AWD. Everything was going well the Sales Consultant was extremely friend as we decided to go and talk to a guy by the name of "Edwin Fecundo". As a filipino myself we would normally gravitate to a fellow filipino to help us as it would have been easier to communicate and the feeling of comradery would be there. But I was dead wrong. So anyway it was going real well until I notice that there was about an additional $4,739 markup on top of the suggested $26,135 MSRP based on Toyota.ca. Gateway Toyota's Online Website price that same unit at $27,350. Normally I would let this go as I would understand that the dealer has to make some money as well. It's $3,524 over priced compared to their online pricing and a parkup of $4,739.00 compared to what I see on Toyota.ca's MSRP. I couldn't tap over my friend shoulders when I realized this so when he left Edwin asked that we should put $500 dollars down which he stated was refundable at the time should everything push through and once we've considered it a deal. So we left for the day giving me a chance to speak to my friend stating that I think that this deal was bad as there was almost a $5K markup compared to the other dealers offering the same make for with a smaller percentage of a markup. When we came back to speak to Edwin about this, was when his attitude towards us changed. So remember he said this deposit of $500 was refundable. At the time I thought this was alright because with everyone I helped, sales consultants would always ask for this deposit and we would always get this amount back. But this time when we asked for his money back this was when we realize as to what type of person we were dealing with. Edwin's tone of voice and attitude totally changed. We asked him why there was a huge mark up of 5K from the sales price. and he would jumble up his words with loads of techno mumbo jumbo confusing us as to why the price was the way it was. But my thoughts was why other dealers were not marking up 5K above MSRP why would Gateway Toyota do this. We told him that this isn't a deal and we would like our money back. He refused to return my friends money and say that we aren't working here for free. He was even bounced around and had to speak to several people in finance all refusing to help him get his money back. This didn't help the situation either as he upright refused to return the said refundable $500. Ok here's the most interesting part of the process. When I called Edwin Fecundo over the phone said to me that he's been in the business for already 20 years and knows exactly where I live (great now he's threatening me) and shouted out "TANG INA", (English "Your mother is a whore"). As upset as I already was, I replied "Tang Ina mo Rin", (English "Your Mother's a whore too!").. Edwin raised his voice even more by saying don't you Swear at me!... and I then replied back that you were the one who swore at me first. I was only asking him why he was raising the retail price by over 5K which was way too much compared to other dealers. Very disappointed with their customer service I decided to dig a little further and found that we could actually contact AMVIC for support which we wasted no time in calling. We were advised to letting them know about the situation and we were told that Amvic is already aware of the situation and if no action to remedy this issue on the customer level they will step in and fix issue on behalf of the customer. Terrible and rude sales people. I bought my RAV4 from them 3 years ago and they were friendly and nice but I went to sell the same RAV4 there as am relocating , they were friendly to the point they thought I will be trading in and getting another car. When I said no just want to sell, their tune changed. Very bad service, made me an offer and then told me take it or leave it and if I drive away from the lot the del was not only off but will not get another deal there. I walked out and good decision because I got a better deal somewhere else. Will never go back there. They need to be taught manners!! read more

I see the other reviews below and I don't want to take away from them but I have to say that I am impressed with the service department at this dealership. Let me explain. A few years ago my son purchased a used 2007 Toyota Tundra that was imported from the USA. The vehicle is now off warranty and he did not buy it from Gateway. His air injection system failed recently he found that it can be a very expensive repair. Up to $4,000 dollars. On the internet he also found that Toyota has a extended warranty for this problem because of premature failure of these components. Gateway Toyota not only welcomed my son to bring the vehicle in to them but took care of all the work and getting the warranty repairs authorised through Toyota USA. The truck was repaired and it did not cost him a penny......Nice. Thanks Toyota and thank you Gateway for your great service............. I am impressed. read more

The service department at Toyota Gateway made me feel exceptionally comfortable. Not having a strong knowledge base when it comes to vehicles it is always nerve racking taking my vehicle in. Jesse and the Service Manager at this location are easy to deal with and made my experience a positive one. Purchased a 2014 Honda CRV in Oct of 2016. It was missing a rear cargo cover, a 275.00 item. I asked my salesperson, Rob McGillis to include one as part of the deal. He agreed and we wrote it into the contract. I left with the vehicle and have now been waiting 5 months for a part that my local Honda dealer has said he can get shipped from Calgary 'tomorrow'. Rob McGillis has sent me numerous excuses and promises via texts and still no cargo cover. Emails to the Sales and General Manafer have gone unanswered. Why they would breach the contract of a reasonably costly vehicle over a minor part is beyond me, but now I'm forced to submit a BBB complaint and file suit in small claims court. I wouldn't deal with Rob McGillis or Gateway Toyota again. Currently working on resolution through the manager or Gateway. Will update review when completed but looks promising. read more

This place is a cash cow... I have a RAV4 with extended warranty. Each time I go there, they always say its going to cost you $500-600 for something or the other. I just replaced my cabin air filter a week ago. When I took it for an oil change, they said that I had to replace the cabin air filter as it was dirty. That tells how honest they are. i was looking at their 2011 sienna for 18,999. it has almost 14k worth of damage and refused to lower the price and offered a meager amount for my trade in. I mean really insulting and i just noticed they reposted the same van on auto trader for 1k more? what a dirty dealership to go to . don't let them use the excuse that we already dropped the price 2k, cuz it just increased from $18,999 to $19,900 read more
