So disappointing... we took out of town visitors and started at King street. We walked briefly towards Archdale then walked back...to King. From King St we found locked gates everywhere. A simple pathway downtown, connecting various churches and gardens in a quarter mile walk across the heart of the city. The walk begins at the gates of St. John's Lutheran Church on Archdale Street, crosses King Street and Meeting Street, and concludes at St. Philip's Episcopal Church. Iron gates, cemeteries, gardens, and museums, are connected by the path through the French quarter. A beautiful way to spend an afternoon. read more

Gateway Walk is a nice cemetery with scenic views, next to the Unitarian Church. Although I was not a fan of walking through a graveyard, Gateway Walk It is filled with lots of vegetation, trees, and history of Charleston. The walk itself is small, but the history that this place contains is huge. It's fascinating to see the stones and dedication in this site as it gives you a glimpse of Charleston history. read more

This is a beautiful little walkway filled with mature vegetation that I never would have found if I were not exploring a grave yard at the Unitarian Church. It's a small walk, but has so much to look at and admire. It's one of those places that you find by accident and hope that you can find again someday when you're on a similar walk. read more

I have always found the cemetaries of the lowcountry enchanting and there has always been a special place in my heart for the Unitarian Cemetary in Charleston. The Gatway Walk allowed me to find my way through the most beautiful church yards in the city. Unfortunately the afternoon I set aside to visit the churches was very busy. There was a lot of construction noise that did not provide a peaceful ambiance for this type of stroll. And several of the cemetaries were filled with an art class, making it very difficult to navigate. Overall this was a very thoughtful idea . read more

The Gateway Walk in Charleston is a great place to walk and relax that is in the middle of Charleston, but seems like it is in a different world or place. I like that the path is quiet and has plenty of trees and shade to stay cool on hot day. The walk is well maintained and clean and is very cool to walk through as you do not have to worry about tripping up or falling, but there is one tree to look out for if you are tall as you can hit your head if you are not careful. This is a nice place to de-stress during a busy day as you can clear your head and regroup quickly during the walk. I like that Charleston has little walks and alleys like this throughout the city and they are hidden and off the path. read more

The Gateway Walk was an interesting way to spend a little time wandering Charleston mostly off the city streets. The gate at St. John's Lutheran Church was locked, but luckily for us we were able to enter just down the block at the Unitarian Church. It was fun looking out for The Gateway Walk "coins" marking the route. It felt like the majority of the walk was through church cemeteries, which were interesting to see, with a few "garden" spots mixed in. The gate going from the Circular Congregational Church leading to the St. Phillips Graveyard was locked so we were unable to complete the walk. We had however visited the graveyard the day before when visiting St. Phillips Church, so we were't too disappointed. If this is the case on your visit, you can also access the graveyard off of Church Street. Overall if you've got some extra time in the city and are looking for something to do for a bit it was a nice walk, but I wouldn't say this a "must do" while in Charleston. read more

This has so much potential! The current gates are only open M-F 9:30-5 but consistently closed between a few of the churches: especially near St Phillips. The garden walks are such a lovely idea: I wish they were connected!! read more

Gorgeous! I could have spent hours in here, walking around and taking photos. The old grave stones are remarkable. And to boot, the organist inside the church was playing exquisitely inside and the music really set the scene. Our walk was cut short because my husband was getting eaten by bugs. Oh well! read more

This is one of the best kept secrets in Charleston. The Gateway Walk is a free walking tour right in the heart of the historic district that connects city churchyards, garden areas and hidden courtyards. It takes you away from the sidewalk viewpoint and into the secret places in the middle of four city blocks. Entering from Church St. across from St. Philip's Episcopal Church, you amble through four churchyards, through the gardens of the Charleston Library Society and the Gibbes Museum of Art. The Gateway Walk is open Monday through Friday, 8:30-5:00 pm. read more

This had potential to be something really great, but alas it has some major faults. We were visiting Charleston over a long weekend and found out about this in one of our guide books. The walk sounded great and we were right where most guides started. The walk began pleasantly on a weekend summer morning/early afternoon, but by the time we got to the Gibbes Museum, the gates were locked and we were unable to continue the walking tour. Pretty lame considering we had only walked for 20 mins. read more

Clearly Rebekah is a tourist. The Gateway Walk does connect St. Philips Church (Episcopal) to Archdale Street by way of the Circular Church (UCC), the Gibbs Art Gallery, the Library Society, and the Unitarian Church. The signature section of the Walkway starts on King Street and extends back to the Unitarian Church Yard. At King Street there is a formal gateway, after that, three or so private residences built by the Unitarian Church in the 1950s, then the bushy Romantic churchyard. There look on the left side near Gage Hall for the small "A LEE' grave stone, believed to have been Poe's love Annabelle Lee. Note also the tombstones marked CSA for soldiers during the "Recent Unpleasantness" loyal to the Confederate States of America. While in the Church Yard I'm certain the Vestry will not object to your doing some weeding. The Gate at King Street was installed in the 1920s as an entrace to the Church so that the ladies of the church could avoid the hookers who plied their trade on Archdale Street (or so I was told!). It should be noted that the Writer of this piece was Minister to the Unitarian Church from 1977-1987. read more
