A speak easy in Boise! I was intrigued! The whole experience was so fun to share with a group of friends! We stood in the alley and knocked on the door. A small window in the door opened and we had to provide a password to gain entry. (Initially our large group had to reserve 3 time slots and we would be seated separately.) I was in the first group. We were let into a small area with floor to ceiling bookcases. Of course there was a book that once pulled, opened a secret door to the bar within. The ambiance was dim lighting and groups of comfortable seating areas. The waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable about the drinks on the menu. I started with a mocktail that could be made vegan by omitting the egg white. Beautifully presented with a flower design. It was sweet and it was tart. The second drink I got was a cocktail that was smooth with a perfect amount of sweet. My friends got cocktails in their unique glasses. When our next group came through, they were led into a room. After a while, one friend came out to say hello to us. The waiter noticed that we knew each other and told my group to follow him. The room was dimly lit and was furnished with comfortable armchairs and couches. Our third group was able to join us in the room and we were able to mingle seated or standing. The different drinks that were ordered were so cool. A smoky bubble was set on top of a cone shaped glass that resembled an ice cream cone. I had a couple of friends that ordered gin drinks and they were served in a bathtub complete with rubber ducky! This was such a fun and special way to celebrate a friend's birthday! I've been to several speakeasies around the USA and Gatsby should be the standard of what a speakeasy should be. No really! Imagine yourself walking through the 8th St promenade in downtown Boise. It's hustling and bustling with people and restaurants that are packed. Then, out of the corner of your eye, you see an alley. It's kinda dark, maybe a little unsettling at first. You see a steel door with a small panel at the top of the door. No door handles but a green lit old stagecoach light, a small wooden sign hanging g just beyond the door with a key on it. Hmmm, strange. In faded sharpie letters it says Knock knock on the metal door, so you knock twice. The panel on the door slides open and they ask for the password. Whoa!!!! Luckily you called ahead to make reservations so they whispered it to you. You give the password and door opens to a tiny little library with a couple of shelves full of books. The hosts welcomes you and you stare at the bookshelf knowing it isn't just a bookshelf but a door. You try pulling on different books guessing which is the right one but after a minute the hostess shows you and you enter a beautiful brick walled 1920s decorated room with seats and dim lights and no windows whatsoever. The artwork is prohibition-era themed. Heck, there's even a stack of wooden barrels that supposedly hold spirits. That is exactly the speakeasy experience you are looking for. We were seated in the boiler room, a private area which had beautiful wooden lockers with glass doors all lit up and full of booze. Books line the wall and there is an old fireplace covered with candles that have melted wax all over the mantle. In the corner is a poker table. Really the perfect vibe for a speakeasy. Glance at the menu and notice their tang of cheaper to very rare and unique spirits, some costing hundreds of dollars for a shot. Whisky, vodka, rum, gin, scotch, bourbon, you name it. But also check out their cocktails. They can even make mocktails if you don't want alcohol. Not only are the drinks unique but so is their presentation. The glades used I've never seen. Some drinks have a printed pattern on them, others come with dry ice that quickly evaporates or a cool smoked filled bubble. The whole experience was just amazing. This is a do not miss opportunity if you like drinks and cool, unique experiences. They even have another room in the back called the Garrison Room which looks like a mineshaft. I just love the thought put into this place. And when you are done, you exit through a nondescript door and exits to a patio area of another restaurant and back out to the promenade. Our server, Bryce, gave us recommendations for drinks and they were spot on! Super tasty, beautiful and fun! The highlight, though, was getting to do a little tasting in the Garrison Room. It felt so special and a bit hidden-away, like we were in on a secret. Kelly, the manager, was kind enough to give us a tour and guide us through it, which made the experience even more memorable. I got to experience the Gatsby 2 years ago during the holidays. I totally recommend coming here during the holiday season! It's so much fun. My friend made reservations last night for her birthday. I knew it was going to be another great time here! My sister and I showed up late. We got to the secret door, gave the special password and got let in. I love the secret book room you are led into. Books from top to bottom. We were given the rules of the venue before we were officially let in. Our party was sitting right in front of the secret door. Walking in, it's hard not to fall in love with this joint. It's dark, romantic and intimate. The girls got their first round of drinks and truffles started. My sister and I checked out the drink menu. I did have to ask our cocktail server for their mocktail list. She listed off a few but I asked her for her recommendation. I believed she would pick out a good one for me. My sister's drink came out in a book. Talk about a neat way to get your drink and such a fun presentation. The drink I got was the same drink I got the last time I was there. It came with a fun bubble on top. It's citrus, tart and yummy. While sipping on our goodies, we were serenaded by two beautiful ladies. The singer was stunning and her voice was the same. The musician did a great job creating music for the singer to sing to. They created a beautiful ambiance for us! I did end the night with a drink from the recommendation from the bartender. I don't remember what it was called but I know it had ginger beer and a delicious topping on it. Both drinks were so good! It was hard not chug these babies down. Even though it don't drink, it was nice to be able to have such fun drinks available for me. It was neat people watching and seeing what kind of drinks they got. Every drink was different. One came in a box, one looked like a lava lamp, another one had a s'more on top. This joint is so creative and different. It just makes your experience here that much more fun. We are making plans to come here for the holiday season. I am looking forward to that! The Gatsby is a great place to kick it at if you're wanting to go out but deal with the club scene. My daughter sent me an Instagram reel about Mistletoe Magic late Monday night just as I was about to count the passerby's while sleep people watching at the Le Consulat in Montmartre. Her message to me was, "Book it" so I did. We arrived to the nondescript door and my daughter entered the phone number so I could get the password of the day. With the password of the day embedded in my short term memory, I knocked on the door, what happened next was magical. One of Santa's helpers or a very tall elf magically appeared and asked for the password to which I provided and then confirmed my reservation. The door unlocked and we were in the library surrounded by bookcases filled with books. Savanah, decked to the halls in a green velvety hooded Christmas attire went over the rules with us and then like a scene out of a movie pushed one the books down and the door opened to this winter wonderland that was once Gatsby's Savanah showed us our table and we were presented with the Mistletoe Magic menu of speciality holiday drinks. It felt like Christmas morning as our eyes widened to take in our surroundings. Presents, tinsel, glitter and wrappings were expertly displayed. It was not gaudy or tacky but displayed with care and the overarching theme of Night before Christmas was ever preset. Piper arrived to take our order. She was like sugar and spice and everything nice. My daughter ordered the Pumpkin Jack and I ordered the Bad Santa. While our drinks were being prepared, Savanah in her green velvety hooded outfit whizzed round the winter wonderland dodging sleds, Old Saint Nick, and even grandma on a reindeer. Piper returned with the Pumpkin Jack and Bad Santa. The pumpkin Jack's pumpkin hung on a tree stand and the Bad Santa was encased in a five and dime style tchotchke. Our drinks were phenomenal and crafted with care. Our Santa cookies were delicious. The chocolate ganache with the espresso bean on top was the perfect stocking stuffer. We ordered two more drinks. One was the Brown Butter Rum that caught my daughter's eye has Piper lit it on fire at a nearby table. I decided since I was a 'Bad Santa' I might as well, 'Go down the Chimney' About ten or so mins later, Piper returned with her magical fire stick and burnt the brown sugar and cinnamon on top of the Funko Mug of Jack Skeleton of the Brown Butter Rum. My Down the Chimney was in a moose head with antlers. The antlers acted as the handles. Not to be forgotten was the warmed cookie that came with Down the Chimney. My daughter did her best impression of Saint Nick by the fireplace and ate the cookie within a couple of bites. The Mistletoe Magic at Gatsby should not be missed. It was an amazing experience and Savanah and Piper welcomed us in their Elf Chalet with such care that we didn't want to leave. Call to get the password. Enter through a library. The rules are the absolute bomb! Each drink is spectacular in its own, unique way. Service is very friendly, but you will also feel like your group has the place to yourself. Really well done. We also did a whiskey tasting in the Garrison Room. Hmm, whiskey? They have plenty of whiskey, but also gins and tequillas. A really fantastic experience. We learned a bit about tasting spirits. A bit about prohibition. A bit of history. And, we had a whole lot of fun!!! The drinks aren't cheap, $20 per with tip, but each one is an event. I mean come on? Who doesn't love a good speakeasy, with a password, an alley secret entrance to copy an old school red light district, a library secret entrance, and historical literature based fun. This place was so cool and enjoyable. We had not planned on going here on our recent trip to Boise but once we heard about it from the place around the corner we found our way in for a short visit. I am not much of a drinker these days but they were very accommodating to us. The decor is outstanding. I am a total 1920's and Gatsby geek being from Long Island originally and a retired teacher. The drinks are freaking amazing! My friend had this really cool drink that they set on fire and it smoked. She is a picky drinker and said it was amazing. I just had a soda. For me it is more about history and venue decor since i work in a theater and in hospitality. I felt a little weird and really wanted to order a fancy drink but I had already had my limit of alcohol at dinner. I say this because the staff were very kind about that and could not have been more accommodating to us. As long as you order something they let us in. We promise next time to come more prepared to enjoy all your wonderful concoctions. It was pretty quiet the night we went since we went on a weeknight and earlier in the evening. I think you might need a reservation if you go on the weekends or later at night, so call ahead. You need to call them anyway for the password. The service was impeccable. To be honest if I lived in Boise I would be here every night. It is a very unique venue with unique drink offerings and presentation to theme. We really did not exactly get the whole underground mine themed area by the bathrooms/exit but I am sure it relates somehow. Hahah! We just loved it all. My wife and I came in for the first time for their Christmas pop-up theme. Very fun experience. You enter in from the alley at the ominous door and provide the daily passcode. Our host was in character the whole time and provided a great introduction into the library and eventually, the speakeasy. Inside the bar is beautifully decorated for Christmas and all the staff were festively dressed. The holiday menu has ample drinks not found in their normal menu. Each drink has a unique glass and the four drinks we tried were delicious. We made reservations a month ago.
