From the moment you step inside, the place has that quintessential speakeasy feel. The ambiance is dark, moody, and eclectic, with vintage touches throughout. One feature that really caught my eye was a stunning cove-like structure that added so much character to the space. The menu was just as impressive as the décor -creative, varied, and full of unique cocktails that felt thoughtfully designed rather than your standard bar offerings. They even have a few "secret" drinks hidden on the menu, and the staff will happily tell you how to find them, which is a fun touch.Since another reservation was due to arrive in about 40 minutes, we kept it to two cocktails, which was perfectly fine as we were only stopping in for a nightcap. Both drinks were beautifully crafted. I especially loved The Canvas ,it was bright, refreshing, and memorable. The staff is always attentive and impressively knowledgeable about the drinks. This visit, I tried something different--a whiskey sour served over shaved ice. This is a neat speakeasy! We don't have a reservation on a Friday night and were able to get in with only a 15 minute wait. We sat at the bar and the bartenders had great recommendations and quick service. It was fun watching them make the unique drinks. Find the secret door. Call the number. And voila! Secret door opens! I love experiencing speakeasies. My one critique is that if someone is already through the first secret door as you're coming in, the whole secrecy of it disappears. So my suggestion to those who go, if you find the secret door and go through it and see people waiting, maybe go back out and close the door and wait like a min or two. The ambiance is nice. Thick As Thieves quickly became one of my favorite cocktail bars in Boise. The interior is something you just have to good and experience. It feels like you're entering the Great Gatsby and the roaring 20's. I love the true speak easy entrance with the phone call and reservation system where you literally "step into" the bar. Our drinks took a little bit to make, but when you see the care and thoughtfulness that goes into each drink, waiting a few minutes longer than a normal bar is worth it. We also got the Bangkok Dangerous which was my favorite ... the crushed sesame seeds on the ice cube is what brought this mango sticky rice drink together.can't wait to try more libations on the menu. At this point I can't entirely remember all the drinks that I've had. But I've been twice, once for each time I've gone to Boise, every single drink has been five out of five. The last time we went it also happened to be my fiancé's birthday and the dessert donut holes we got were insanely good! It was in a beautiful glass and delicately garnished with mint. The charcuterie plate was devine. The plate had a salty green olives, garlicky crackers, smoked white cheese and salami. (I think it's salami) I loved the green olives and the cheese. The cheese a cut into the perfect size bite. It wasn't overwhelming eating the cheese, olives and crackers at the same time. Our was a good snack with our drinks. Our second round was the Thieve's Root Beer Float. I can't express to you how good this root beer was! It was life changing! I will come back every weekend just for this root beer float. It's absolutely fantastic! One of the best mocktails I have ever had. I would punch someone just to have the last glass of this. If you love root beer floats then Thieve's Root Beer Float is a must try! We only spent a little over an hour here and we had the best time! Thick as thieves is all about the experience. The speakeasy vibe, dark mood lights, mysterious ambiance. However, I think as they have gotten more popular they have gone downhill. These drinks are ridiculously expensive. Staff has a pretentious vibe, and it's so dang dark you'll need a flashlight (other than the little black light they give you). We were about 5 minutes away from a 1 hour stay, and had not 1, but 2 staff members tell us that we needed to leave our hour was up. With our group spending over $200 total on drinks, it was clear they're just interested in getting as many people in & out as they can. I'd recommend a different cocktail spot such as Ochos or hap hap for a just as quirky, but more kind experience! read more

Decided last minute to check out Thick as Theives. I was pleasantly surprised when we showed up on a Saturday night, they were able to squeeze us in. The bar is incredibly dark and we couldn't read the menus till they brought us lights. The black lights they give you are very cool as they light shows some additional items you can't see with you your cell phone light. It is pricy and they only have two food items. I've been thick thieves with my daughter, my aunt, and my brother. We are all scoundrels, some would even say we are scum, but we like it like that. After making reservations, we dial in our 'code' and tell Big Mick, that we're here. We're not going to tell you all of you all how we get in other than saying we get in if you know what I mean. We typically get our usual spot by the window so we can keep an eye on the OG Tick-Tock, or Big Tuna, sometimes, Ice Pick Willie will show up with several showgirls on each side. You gotta be careful of the Nose. Jackie Nose is one tough customer and if he wants to sit in his booth, and your Sitzfleisch is there, you better get up and go to the bar. Kidding aside, you won't see too many gangsters but the people-watching is 100/10. We've seen some very interesting characters stroll through Thick at all hours. We've seen Zoot Suits, Glen Miller wannabes, Slappers, and more. The drinks! My favorite is the "Hello Operator" The Pastry War is not bad either. I've had Amigos too. We're good friends. The Hanky Panky and I did not get along. C'est la Vie. Believe me, it wasn't for the lack of effort on my part. The Martini is ok. I've been here 20+ times so I'm pretty well-versed with their menu, staff & offerings. For starters, aim to make a reservation online. They do fill up quickly, especially during holidays. If you try making a same day reservation on a weekend, it's normal to only see 11 pm availability pretty early on, so plan accordingly. For drinks, their menu changes often which can be a bummer. Currently, their best items are off the menu with the latest change that happened 3-4 weeks ago. If you stick with the menu (including items you can see with a black light) they're all pretty good for Boise. Keep in mind, if you talk with the bartenders or let them make you something the way they want to, please clarify over and over if you have any allergies or dietary restrictions. We've been at the bar, said we can't have dairy, and then they'd make us a drink with cows milk in it & not tell us until after we consumed it...where we proceeded to get sick hours later. Same thing happened last night when a girl was vegetarian but was given a duck fat drink. She literally teared up at the table next to us & they never took it off her bill. Lately, service hasn't been as great but that may be due to the holidays. Drinks that are meant to have palm fronds don't have them, one time bergamot bitters was missing from our drink, etc. It's all things you might not notice unless you've had the items before, but again, worth mentioning. It's still my go-to drink spot in town. That said, after getting sick here & them changing the menu so frequently, and the hit or miss service, I can't say they're the best, but they're still 100% worth visiting at least once. read more

You guys! If you haven't made it to Thick as Thieves yet, drop everything you're doing and make a reservation right now! From the moment I reached the top of the stairs and grabbed the phone, I felt like I was doing something naughty. They check your reservation and then come out to grab you. As they usher you through the secret passage way, you're greeted by a 20's vibe art Nouveau style bar that is low lit with swanky heavy curtains all around the seating area, a fireplace, and a muted winter color palate lending to the boujee, cozy atmosphere. When they seat you, they hand you a menu with little black lights which reveal secret menu items. We arrived for happy hour, but the rest of the menu was so enticing we didn't choose anything on the happy hour menu. You absolutely get what you pay for, and let me tell you, these bartenders are craftsmen! We started with the "Poppy don't Peach" like a bourbon peach pie - hubby liked this one so much he ordered two. I had the Sailors Knott, which is kind of an old fashioned with rum, and the essence of toasted coconut. You had me at toasted coconut. Next I had a Vodka drink with passion fruit - my absolute favorite food! This one was really special! The passion fruit must have been in to foam on top because I got its essence every time I went to drink past the foam and it was delightful! Lastly, we asked the bartender for a recommendation, Bourbon for hubby and Gin for me (don't knock it til you've had GOOD gin - the general consensus here is that people who don't like gin, love their gin drinks, so I encourage you to be adventurous). Per the bartender - craftswoman's suggestion, hubby got the Night Cap a very boozy selection that had him getting tipsy by the end of the second one! Must've been good! Haha For me she recommended her favorite with gin - the oil and canvas, what a spectacular work of art! With every sip I was more intrigued! Olive oil emulsion in a drink?! Who knew?!
