I actually like Terminal 3 at London Heathrow. It's a long walk and bus transfer to and from the terminal that brings the rating down a bit. Other than that, this is the terminal where we can finally decompress after a long flight. As long as you have enough time built into the layover. The security checkpoint is fine. We've had some polite assistants, and also some who are very indifferent. It's the luck of the draw. This last experience was very pleasant. I did have some liquids flagged in my carry-on, but all proceeded as usual once they tested them. You can always count on security being very thorough in the UK, and with good reason. This terminal has a lot of great shopping. There are quite a few food options and airline lounges as well. It can be very crowded, but everything is easy to find. It's a nice little break before hopping on to the next flight. read more

One thing I remember here when arriving at Heathrow Terminal 3 is that it was a lengthy walk to get to baggage claim. I felt like I was doing a 5K. Wear your earbuds and listen to some tunes on the way. Also plenty of shopping along with shops to pick up some food items and cafes along the way. Bathrooms of course. Check in and customs process was seamless and pretty quick compared to others I have encountered. It looked a bit dated to me but does what it's meant for, arrive or leave and head back home. read more

I like Heathrow airport and always look forward to a connection here or as a final destination which is rare for me anymore. I came to and through here many times though during my work years and familiarity and the fact that it is located not that far from central London are some reasons why I like it. I also like it as I think it is the most cosmopolitan of all the western world's airports with the diversity of its travelers and I enjoy the people watching here. Terminal 3 in particular is operated mainly for the long haul flights of the One World alliance, that is American Airlines, British Airways, Iberia, etc, so it is commonly used when traveling to or from Chicago. I can't give it a 5 star airport rating as it has a dated feel to many parts of the airport but that's part of its charm to me as well! read more

If there's good shopping, I'm all for it....lol... I don't normally fly out of terminal 3 whenever I'm connecting or arriving from LA. The occasional transfer does put me through this terminal. From terminal 5, we had to have a little trek until we reach the shuttle bus downstairs. From there, it's a good few minutes till you arrival to terminal 3. There's a good amount of designer shops right when you get off the shuttle and starts walking through. They know how to get people's attention and what better way than amazing shopping. All your luxury high ends shops which is also at terminal 5. I don't remember what the food options are as I've never eaten here. But depending on what gate you're flying out, it can be a major trek. From our connection in this terminal. The gate that we were taking off was quite a ways. It's fine if you have enough time to walk and enjoy but when your flight arrives late and you only have a limited amount of time to get to the next gate. That can be a bit of a stress. Why is that some gates are so much further and other the ones that you alway get when you're in a rush... lol.... Terminal 3 is a pretty big area. If you have plenty of time, enjoy the shops or at least window shop. read more

Flying thru Heathrow a number of times now, I have to say it's one of my preferred airports in Europe for shopping, there is a mix of high and low, both typical stores you'd find on a street in London like WHSmith and Boots, to local classics like Harrod's and Fortnum & Mason, a mix of restaurants and high end name brands, a varied selection of lounges. My last opportunity to stop here was on a transfer btwn JFK and BUD, on a 1 hour layover that turned into an unexpected 6 hour layover. (More on that to come in separate review!) Terminal 3 flights arrive both direct to terminal or require (dis)embarking the plane on the tarmac and shuttling to the terminal. The central layout is pretty rectangular, with three concourses branching off to the north, west and south, and parking to the north/northeast. It takes a good 25 minutes or so to walk from one end to the other tip so take that into account if you have transfers; for transiting passengers you may need to go thru security between flights. Between terminals 2 and 3, which are the main international terminals, you'll need to use an underground walkway, an approx 10 min walk. Baggage claim is downstairs at the ground level and from there you can access the Arrivals Hall and transportation options. Departures check-in counters are also located on the ground level. I haven't driven here before so can't speak to the parking specifics though can say public transportation is a convenient option. Like most major cities there is a Heathrow AirPort Express train that charges more (£25) and connects Heathrow to Paddington station in 15 minutes travel time, running approx once every 15 minutes. The tube also stops here and at Terminal 5, with fares which vary by distance to destination (more in the £3-10 range). For both you can use an Oyster card (prepaid public transit card that you can top up at machines), or nowadays just a contactless tap with credit card. Of course bus, taxi, private passenger pick up are options too. read more

Get ready to collect Fitbit steps because Heathrow is a HUGE airport. I've been here quite a few times when I came to visit the UK. Most recently, I arrived here from San Francisco, and had a layover in Heathrow on my way to Slovenia. I had to take shuttle buses to get from one terminal to another. Thankfully I had no trouble navigating, and there were instructions, but I could see how it could be confusing for jetlagged travelers. If you need to convert currency, do it here! I had some pounds that I needed to convert into Euros, and thought to myself, "Eh, I'll just do it once I get to Slovenia." Then I arrive to Slovenia, and whoops, they don't have a currency conversion desk. read more

Heathrow Airport (LHR), was named London Airport until 1966. It's the primary and largest international airport serving London. It is the largest of the six international airports in the London airport system (the others being Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, City and Southend). I use this airport often. One reason is the Heathrow Express, a direct light rail which takes all but 15 minutes to Paddington Station / city center.  This time, we came in from krk/fra (T1) to LHR's T2 on Lufthansa. Such a huge airport but my experience was pretty good. Although due to the size, you do have to walk to your terminal so definitely give yourself time, especially if you get a far gate (like I did). The check in and customs process was well organized and efficient. I was able to go through easily and I enjoy how they take a pic of you to confirm your identity. Such an easy and flawless process. As for the sops, if you are looking for last minute gifts, there is such a huge variety and selection of what you may want and need. I went a little crazy with all the deals but what the heck, I enjoy bringing back gifts for my friends and family. Overall, great airport, clean, friendly staff, and would love to visit again on my next UK trip. read more

Functional, very functional. I'm not in T3 tbh as often, but it's fine for those international US flights I periodically take. You'll need 10+ minutes if arriving by subway to walk from T2 to T3, so keep that in mind.One bonus once there is the shorter security lines due to multiple entry points. For a large airport it's great compared to the single-entry points airports. In fact, this is an amazing feature, saving multiple minutes in line or allowing for a little more time to arrive before the flight. It's still hilarious how the "put all liquids in little clear bags" process is so prominently featured. I guess that's more surprise at how many people still roll to the airport with all their liquids strewn amongst their luggage like it's recently 2001 and this hasn't been a thing for 2+ decades. You'll have decent selections for food/drink, plus plenty of high-priced shops to blow your remaining extra ££s. Settle in at Pret, etc, while you patiently wait for the magical 1-hour before flight to see your gate listed. Then rush over to stand in another line until...whenever. Safe travels! read more

When connecting through an VERY LARGE international airport, you can have two entirely different experiences - one based on your ARRIVAL and one based on your DEPARTURE. We arrived in London on a Wednesday and departed on the following Wednesday and we had very different experiences. ARRIVAL - we arrived a Heathrow around 6am after an all night flight from the states. Despite needing to walk quite a ways, our "ARRIVAL" experience was pretty good. Clearing customs (passport control) was a highly automated function and we were though passport control in no time. I kept expecting the "other shoe to fall" but getting into England was pretty painless. We were in the area where arriving passengers meet their family (or, in our case, our driver) in less than 30 minutes of arrival. DEPARTURE - we were scheduled for a 9:30 am departure so we arrived at the airport around 6:30 am The place is HUGH so give yourself plenty of time. The check-in process was terrible. We were flying Delta on the way home but had flown on their partner carrier Virgin Atlantic on the way over. My wife's check-in went flawlessly but the system wouln't allow me to check in. After getting both Delta and Virgin involved - they found the issue and got me checked in. Then, there's the long walk to the DUTY FREE AREA. You cannot get to your gate without going through the duty free shops, a loud, garish, crowded area. Not being a shopper, I did not like being funneled thru the duty free shops. OVERALL - I'd rate this as a 4-star based on my arrival expereince but only a 2-star based on my departure experience. SO, OVERALL, I'll rate London Heathrow as a 3-star. read more

Terminal 3 at LHR is huge! Give yourself plenty of time to navigate. Security is well set up, especially if you have fast option. Just scan your boarding card at the automatic entrance, then normal scan of yourself and your carry-ons. Duty free hits you in the face. Then large waiting area. Wanted a coffee, and one of the locals recommended cafe Nero. Excellent coffee there. Couple of pains. Most of the USB charging ports do not work, had to try 5 before finding one that worked. Other pain was gate for your flight is not posted until an hour before flight time. So you must wait in the crowded area. Lots of seating. Lots of food options. All in all nice airport and terminal. read more

Of all of the airports I travel through, they need to help this place. It is oldish, not enough device charging ports, seats at the gate for larger aircraft were half of what is needed. Thus, get to the gate immediately when it is posted or prepare to stand. Once at the secured gate, no restrooms available and you have to go back through flight check in. read more

Easy to find flights and times. Clean bathrooms and plenty of places to shop and eat. A lot of moving walkways. Flight itself Virgin Airlines was good, food not so much as I was to have a low sodium meal and was told they don't have low sodium meals even though it's listed as you check in online. This is a so so airport to me, way too many people and it was mobbed. I get that it's an international hub but my goodness it was crowded. From terminal 5, you have to take a shuttle bus over. And then for international flights, more security checks and lady that was directing security wasn't very nice to me. She didn't want my stuff in two bins in two lanes but she wouldn't say anything to me and I couldn't understand her gestures. I finally got the message to move to one lane with 2 bins but I didn't appreciate her rudeness. They've got a really nice kind of circular area for eating and shopping and on the inside of the circle, you can sit. So many people were seated, there were seats available but not plenty. There's a lot of food options here (even a caviar bar), where u can sit down or grab and go. Every place for food had incredibly long lines but Pret A Manger's line was moving, so I got a snack there. Iced matcha oat latte and a croissant, both solid. I had about another hour to kill prior to my gate being announced so I spent some time buying a few London souvenirs. I been to London for Y2K and had just finished college. There is a Harrods here, so I was there for a bit as I love their department store and since I had so much stuff already, I bought another Harrods bag to put all my stuff in. I also got one where all the British guards are painted on it, it's very pretty, and couldn't resist. I also spent some time at Boots and got a few Yorkie bars (which are hard to find in the US) and bought yet another bag with Double Decker buses on it. I am definitely turning into my mom haha. One hour prior to departure, your gate number is assigned and then you can proceed to the gate. Boarding was pretty smooth and this was a pretty big flight with non stop service to Phoenix. Flight back was uneventful. And would consider flying British Airways again, food was surprisingly good, service alright and seat was comfy. But, I would have to deeply consider flying again thru Heathrow. I was here 25 years ago and remember how much I liked it back then, but guess I'm getting older now and want quieter, but also don't recall this many people flying thru... Its a solid airport but just chaotic. read more

This airport is huge, but for us, it wasn't a great experience. First off, the airport is well staffed with workers everywhere and "Heathrow Helpers". This is great for new travelers or folks who have questions. The other plus is that the gate area is glass enclosed and quiet. When we got to security, we were handed small plastic bags for our toiletries. Airports used to be really strict about this years ago, but I haven't been asked to take my toiletry/cosmetic bag out at airport security in a long time, let alone told I need liquids in a quart sized ziplock bag like 20 years ago, post 9-11. Security flagged my husband's shaving cream (in a tube, not aerosol) and he had to throw it away. The cream made it through Charleston and Schipol (AMS). The security worker said it was above the acceptable amount for liquid. The 'recombobulation area' is super small and could use some benches for folks to put their belts, shoes on- and repack our toiletries. Finally, you must walk through the duty free shops to get to your gate. They really want you to spend money in Britain, that's for sure. If you're at this airport, you're likely flying international to or from London and don't have much of a choice. Since we can't avoid the airport, just let my review be a warning that security is super strict here and by the post-911 book. read more

Terminal 3 has lots of shopping and good food options. However, I do not like having to lug my tote and my carry-on down the stairs and then haul them into a bus before arriving at the terminal. I especially don't like doing all that in reverse when leaving Heathrow. Even tiny airports have ramps, at least. That should be the minimum. read more

I may be biased, but this is my favorite terminal to fly in and out of. The food shop selection landside is pretty decent. The M&S is everything. They need to put one airside! Airside, plenty of shopping, food, and beverage options. A personal favorite is Pret a Manger (the sandwiches and coffee are SO good,) and stopping by Harrods and World duty free to pick something up to take home. A word of warning, there can be a LOT of walking if your gate is between 30-40. So allow yourself plenty of time, because gate changes do happen. read more

Flew in on Delta and arrived in Termial 3. We had a much easier time at Heathrow today. Everything went so smoothly. Plenty of clean restrooms. The signage is easy to follow. Customs was organized and relatively fast. Global Entry is not accepted in Europe so be prepaared to stand in line. This is a busy airport and at 10 in the moring there are a lot of planes landing. Staff was friendly. Plenty of signange to public transportion. Easy to find the Elizabeth Line which gets you into the heart of London in 35 minutes. read more

Heathrow terminal 3 is one of the least lovely airports I've traveled through. Only Washington DC Dulles comes to mind as being uglier. At least the tube gets here easily. The airport itself is ugly, with low ceilings and zero attempt at architecture. You are forced to walk through a chaos of expensive boutiques to get to the terminals. Food choices are decent, but pricey. The gates are really far apart, and people mover carpets could be used more liberally. Once you go through passport and boarding pass control you are herded into a small cattle holding pen with hundreds of other passengers. There aren't even toilets available for the cattle. Virgin and Delta airlines use this terminal for their international flights, so we were here on the 1st day of February for our flight back to Los Angeles. Terminal 3 is a stop on the London Subway system (Piccadilly Line) and costs under $10 for the trip, and takes about an hour from Central London. Virgin and Delta share facilities here, so Sky Priority lanes can be used for either one. There are no self-checked luggage here, so one must stand in line if checking bags. Passports were checked for baggage check, but there was no other explicit 'leaving the UK' moment with an immigration officer. The airport wlll not announce the departure gate until 40 minutes before scheduled departure. This encourages people to stay in the main waiting area until it is time to go to the gate. Once the gate was announced, we hurried over (which took a whlie)...to enter the gate waiting area, you must show your boarding pass and passport. They ended up boarding the plane about 20 minutes, and the whole process took about an hour from start to leaving the jet bridge. Our flight to Los Angeles was scheduled for over 10 hours on a Airbus A350-1000. The plane was about half full, which allowed us to stretch out a bit, even in economy. There were 4 separate meal services (a proper lunch, a sandwich, a popsicle, and tea time). The products served were British in nature which was a treat. read more

Heathrow is a pretty big airport. We flew in to Terminal 5 and had to take the shuttle to Terminal 3 for our flight home. The shuttle took a good 10-15 minutes drive to get to the terminal. The gate were we were supposed to board our AA flight home had no AC and the long walk down to the gate area was a good 5 minutes. There was no a/c and it was warm in there. If you need to use the restrooms, make sure to use it before heading down the corridor to your gate as there's a sign that says this is the only restroom here. Can't say I am a fan of this part of the boarding area. read more

Heathrow Airport in London is huge! I been there a few times before, when I flew to London, and also when I had a connecting flight through London. I especially love flying British Airways because it is always a guaranteed layover in London, and I love spending time in the airport terminal in London! Flying from Las Vegas and arriving at London Heathrow terminal 5, immediately walked through, took the bus to terminal 3, where I stayed for the connecting flight to Budapest, Hungary. It's easy 7000 steps in the terminal in any direction, through the shopping areas! And not counting the distance between the terminals! My absolute favorite is the terminal 3 in London Heathrow. So many amazing shops, restaurants, bars and everything between! The duty free shopping is amazing! The prices are almost always lower than in the States, and of course, saving money on the sales tax is priceless. You need to pay attention when buying liquor, because there is a limit how much you can take in your destination country! Also, the liquor or any cosmetic products more than 3 ounces, need to be in a sealed bag (sealed by the cashier, and receipt taped inside the sealed bag, which is valid for 24 hrs) otherwise you will be throwing it away, guaranteed! Security is super strict! Going through between terminals, without leaving the airport, you still need to go through security checkpoint again, before proceeding to the gate! It's very time consuming, be prepared! Also, if you have a connecting flight, sometimes it will be shown on the board just a little before departure, not very early. Especially if the flight is delayed, you won't know your gate number until the very last minute! I almost missed my connecting flight because I thought I had time! My 4 hours of waiting was fun, shopping, dining etc ... and then suddenly I looked at the board, which displayed "gate is closing" lol I was running all the way to the gate, then I realized I still needed to take another bus to go to the plane! Overall, I loved the way Heathrow airport is, and I will definitely fly there again! read more

This terminal is quite massive with lots of gates. There are several shops and restaurants in the waiting area. It can be confusing so be sure to arrive early. The airport does not announce the departure gate until one hour before scheduled departure. people stay in the main area by shops and restaurants until gate number is announced. Once the gate was announced, we rushed to the departure gate, it may take a while depending on the gate. We were able to walk directly onto the plane when we arrived, be sure to show your boarding pass and passport. read more

So I have to be fair here. I only spent a small amount of time trasiting through Terminal 3 as I was heading to the Virgin Upperclass lounge. That being said, it was a truly massive terminal with a ton of gates. It also had an extensive amount of shops from the typical news stand to the ultra luxury type. It also had tons of restaurants from familiar fast food to local offering. There also were tons of windows so I could indulge in my aviation obsession watching airport operations. As with anything in an airport: its all fun and games and works well till it doesn't. In this case everything worked well. read more

So this is a crazy busy airport, let me start with. There are pros and cons which is why I give it an average 3 stars. Pros - if you are departing on a flight they have a great check in system to start you off which is organized and clear. They have some fantastic shops and an amazing restaurant you have to eat at! Cons - Security lines are a mess and all over the place. They could use a bit of organization here. If you are connecting to another flight beware! It is a zoo and you have to take a train, escalators, ramps, stairs and elevators just to try to find your flight. (And that's in the same terminal). Ugh! read more

I have been to Heathrow a few times. Both as a layover and final destination. On this occasion I was coming home from a trip to the UK. First, I have never been asked to put my toiletries in a clear bag. I know the policy is there in most airports, but I have never done it. On this occasion however, they actually made me do it. Also, for some reason my shoes were an issue. They kept swiping them, passing them through the scanner and overall delaying me. Next to me was a woman with a baby and lots of bags and formula ect. And she was going through something similar. The security people seem very lost and no efficient. I guess these were new procedures or maybe new equipment. They didn't seem to know what was going on. Heathrow is overall a good airport, but on this particular day, they were lacking. People were actually missing flights due to getting stuck in security. read more

I wish I was here right now! In terms of large airports, it is easy to navigate into and out of... especially compared to Atlanta or even Chicago! Transportation out of the airport is easy and can be inexpensive (I recommend a bus, SL7 is fantastic). It is very safe, and probably the best experience I could have asked for on my first - and hopefully not last - solo trip. read more
