This is a prime example of terrible business judgement, mediocre customer service and general customer profiling. We signed in and went downstairs to the free weights. We hadn't even been there 5 minutes, using the incline bench press when two individuals who worked for the club (a man and a lady) took me into a room as if to interrogate me. For the record, I'm NOT a personal trainer. I'm an amateur bodybuilder with an extremely MID physique. The exact conversation is as follows: Them: You are not allowed to train people at this gym Me: I was showing her how to use the Incline Press because she's literally never used it before Them: That's why we have trainers here to show people how to use machines Me: So you're saying two friends can't workout together and show each other how to improve their form Them: No Me: Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? Them: It's our policy I filed a formal complaint to management. Obviously these clowns didn't reply to me. There is a reason why this brand has been going downhill over the years. Spend your money elsewhere. I told my entire network about my experience. I have a sense they picked me out based on how I look / dress. I'm happy to discuss the details with any of you. I have memberships to three different gyms in NYC and this is by far the worst gym in the city, perhaps the country.

I went back to look 2 days ago and not only was the system not cleaned but the elevator got stuck AGAIN! I give up and would not give this location any stars if possible. This is one of the 3 locations in the NYSC chain that I visited with sub par maintenance. This review is for the 125 Harlem NYSC HVAC duct and elevator maintenance. As pictured there is a massive collection of dust in the ducts and I have been stuck in the elevator 2 times in 30 days.

Dear Crunch Fitness Management and HR Team,…read more I am writing to formally report a highly concerning incident involving my son at your 81st Street location in New York City this past Sunday. My son, who is bi-racial, was visiting from California. He holds a Crunch membership that he has successfully used in multiple states without issue. However, when he attempted to visit the 81st Street location, he was informed by a male administrator that he would need to pay an additional $130 to work out. After questioning this fee to no avail, my son politely ended the conversation. Before leaving, he tapped the administrator on the knee in a friendly gesture and said, "Thank you, no worries, I'll be heading out." He subsequently called your corporate office and was informed that any transfer or guest fee should not exceed $10, and that the $130 charge was incorrect. The corporate representative instructed my son to return to the front desk and provide the administrator with the corporate number to resolve the matter. Upon re-entering the gym, my son tried to explain his conversation with corporate. He was met with immediate hostility. The administrator refused to cooperate, stating, "I told you, no. It will be $130 and I'm not calling anyone. As a matter of fact, I should call the police and have you arrested for touching me earlier. That's considered physical assault." To threaten a young Black man with arrest and falsely claim physical assault over a friendly, polite tap on the knee is entirely unacceptable, dangerous, and discriminatory. I request that you immediately take the following actions: 1. Review the security camera footage of both interactions from this past Sunday. 2. Investigate the conduct of the administrator on duty at the 81st Street location. 3. Address this unnecessary hostility and ensure your staff undergoes appropriate retraining. This behavior does not align with the values a national fitness chain should uphold. I expect this matter to be investigated and addressed at the highest level. Please reach out to me directly to discuss this situation further. Sincerely, T Lewis

This review reflects my experience during a facility orientation tour at Asphalt Green this morning…read morewith Fritz, a member of the customer service team. I hadn't visited the facility in many years, despite having been deeply involved in the original community mobilization efforts that ensured this property would be preserved for much-needed neighborhood fitness and cultural programming, successfully pushing back against proposals for additional luxury high-rise development. The Asphalt Green team went out of their way to accommodate me as a walk-in, encouraged by a neighbor who regularly swims at the pool and speaks highly of its state-of-the-art design. While waiting in the lobby, I also ran into a fellow runner who is a frequent gym user, a spontaneous moment that speaks volumes about how embedded Asphalt Green is in the local community. I was impressed not only by the facility itself, but by Fritz's knowledge of membership services and the institution's history, especially as I shared personal memories of my own connection to its development. The tour included the locker rooms, pool, and fitness center. The pool is truly stunning and stands out as a best-in-class facility, thoughtfully designed to incorporate accessibility for users of all abilities. Experiencing it firsthand was unexpectedly emotional, a powerful realization of visionary community leader Dr. George Murphy's hopes for the Yorkville community brought to life. The fitness center was active and welcoming, with members of all ages engaged in individual workouts, stretching, and training sessions. The equipment appeared well maintained, well used, and reflective of a vibrant, inclusive membership. As a community-based nonprofit, Asphalt Green, like many NYC nonprofits, does the best it can with the resources available. From my perspective, the facility is exceptionally well run, thoughtfully maintained, and clearly fulfilling its mission to provide a neighborhood-based, state-of-the-art fitness center that truly serves its community. Thanks to Fritz for her kindness and generosity.

If you are a serious swimmer or aspiring to be a serious swimmer, want cool, deep water that is crystal clear, there is just no other. In fact, I moved to the neighborhood to be closer after trying eery pool in the city. Also they have a 50 meter options 3-4 days a week. That is just impossible to find. Oh and they have amazing classes, a great fitness center, helpful staff. And....all of it is a not for profit. Every dime you pay goes back to teaching kids across NYC to swim. Sure -- there are a few broken water fountains from time to time, but honestly, for New York City, this is heaven. I am confused by the comments and chalk it up to the squeaky wheels.
