Gaya's Schoolhouse is run by Gaya, who has been in the childhood development/education field for over 20 years. Gaya is very friendly and knowledgeable, and is fully invested in making sure each child grows and develops to their full potential! Gaya very much views her role as a third co-parent, and works with you to solve any and all problems. She loves each of her children and nurtures them and cares for them as if they are her own. I have two boys, and both started Gaya's Schoolhouse when they were about 5 months old. One is now in kindergarten (where did the time go!) and is thriving! The other is almost 2 and loves every minute at Gaya's. Both my sons always felt like Gaya's was their second home. And, in a lot of ways, it was. I vividly remember my oldest son just letting himself in when Gaya or one of the other amazing teachers would greet us at the door. And now, my younger son has taken to doing the same thing. It is a warm and inviting environment and the kids feel that. What I most respect about Gaya's Schoolhouse is that, somehow Gaya manages to keep all 10-12 or so children (all under the age of 5) in control and engaged. I don't know how she does it. From the kid's perspective, they are playing and having fun all day, but at the same time, they are learning so much about the world and themselves. Some other things I love about Gaya's: -She teaches the kids multiple languages (Spanish, sign language, Armenian and Bulgarian); -There are set activities on most days, including soccer, yoga, gymnastics and dance classes. -She will randomly send photos of the kids during the day. It's always such a nice treat to get a text or an email and see your child having fun with his buddies at daycare. -She puts together an annual "end-of-year concert" with the kids. It is absolutely adorable! How she gets all the kids to follow the "script" and sit/stand where they are supposed to (including the babies) is ridiculously amazing! Finally, and very importantly, Gaya takes safety and the health of the children very seriously. Even before the pandemic, there was a strict sick child policy that she followed. With COVID, she has gone above and beyond, and all of us have stayed safe and healthy through these crazy and uncertain times. We were devoted clients of Gaya's Schoolhouse from 2017 to 2021, having all 3 of our children attending school there. I have expressed my appreciation to the owner and her staff regularly throughout the years with kind words, gifts, and many referrals that have brought some business to her. The first few years were great and there was no doubt in my mind that it was the best place for our children and I was convinced that we will stay there until the end. Unfortunately, things drastically shifted for us during the Pandemic. The hours of operation were reduced and the quality of the services changed for the worse. The lack of professionalism of the owner and her tendency to become defensive made us feel very uncomfortable with making any requests or giving any feedback. There was pressure to potty train our second child, which I did. He was 100% potty trained at home, but continued to have accidents at school and one day the owner complained that he pooped on himself and that the teachers did not like having to change him. In the meantime, our friends kept sharing that their children were entirely potty trained at their school and the process was seamless with minimal efforts at home. By the same token, our daughter had a hard time returning to school after she was absent for a few months during the beginning of the Pandemic and was screaming a lot. I did stay with her at the school for a week to help her transition to lessen her stress and the disruption to the rest of the daycare. After that, she continued to have screaming moments and the owner would make comments that the teachers cannot tolerate the screaming and are covering their ears and we were asked to pick her up early. We were shocked by such statements and when we shared the stories with others who are in the field of childcare, we were met with the same shock, validating that this is not normal business practices for a daycare. We kept closing our eyes for a while, wishing to make this work and not having to disrupt our children's lives by switching schools. In speaking to other parents, we discovered that others were also struggling with the reduced hours and keeping up with their jobs. I took initiative to write an e-mail on behalf of the parents requesting longer hours. The owner ended up extending the closing time by half an hour, but it cost me a long time of being treated very standoffishly. One time, I was alone picking up all 3 of my kids and I was not about to risk any of them running into traffic, so I waited for the driveway to open up. The owner was upset that I was at the door a few minutes after the closing time and she would not accept my rationale and I snapped back at her for the first time and broke down in tears while driving my children home after. That should have been my breaking point, but it wasn't. I still chose to see the best and to let go and to keep trying to make this work for our family. I continued to struggle with the reduced hours of operations and having to balance my commute time to the office and getting all of my work done. One particular day, I was running a few minutes late. While I was driving on the freeway, I dropped my phone on the floor and I could not call. I was at the door literally 3 minutes after closing time. She was not happy with me and insisted that I should have called to let her know because she ended up cancelling her plans. I again explained the difficulty of balancing the reduced hours of operation and keeping up with my job. After loading my children in the car, I picked up my phone from the floor and I saw a very stern text message from the owner about me being late and having to pay a late fee. The other major issue that happened simultaneously was discovering that our first grader scored at the very bottom of his class and was academically at the level as if he did not complete Kindergarten. Considering that many children were behind because of the Pandemic, it was shocking to us that he was last in his class given that the owner has repeatedly reassured us that the children under her instruction always excel when they start elementary school and that she never brought up any concerns about him being behind in any way. He was the only Kindergartener and we thought that he was getting a lot of one on one attention from the owner to prepare him for first grade and we were so very disappointed and concerned for our child as we watched him struggle at school not only academically but also emotionally and socially, which continues to this day. At that point, I knew that this is no longer the best place for our children or for ourselves as parents. I chose to leave without notice, because it dawned on me that the way she treated me after I sent the e-mail mentioned above might extend to my children as well. As a result, our stress levels have decreased significantly, and we have come to discover that there are better options for us out there. read more

My oldest daughter graduated from Gaya's Schoolhouse last weekend - and it was the perfect culmination of five great years with Gaya! We started coming to Gaya when my daughter was 5.5mons old, when I was an inexperienced first time mama who didn't know how invaluable a trusted caregiver was as part of our team, part of our village. We actually moved out of the area nearly two years ago, but felt strongly about finishing preschool with Gaya, so we drove (way!) out of the way, everyday, just to continue to be part of this awesome family! In our five years with Gaya, our daughter thrived, learning and playing and growing and becoming the kindest, most sincere and thoughtful helper. She is now more than ready for kindergarten, knowing how to read and write and do some math, knowing songs and poems (in multiple languages!) and dances and the importance of being a good listener and leader, friend and student, helper and learner. Gaya does have some very firm beliefs about how children should be cared for, and about 95% of the time, that gelled perfectly with how we parent. The other 5% of the time, I had to be just as firm back with her, if we wanted something different for our child. If Gaya pushed, we pushed back, and she always respected that, and we were always able to come to a compromise where we both felt content and assured that our daughter's best interest was everyone's top priority. This was a good lesson for us, as new parents, not just with Gaya, but with anyone - we are our children's best advocate, and vocalizing that is of the utmost importance. Anyone with the same priorities will respect that, as Gaya always did. Gaya's Schoolhouse also offered extracurriculars such as yoga, dance and soccer, which enhanced our daughter's growth and learning. Lastly, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the end-of-the-year graduation celebrations that Gaya and her team masterfully execute each year. How she wrangles a dozen kids and gets them to sing and dance and smile and perform will amaze you. The first year, you'll watch your child in awe. By the last year, you and Gaya will both be crying over how far you've come and how excited you are for what's next. COVID tried to ruin this year's celebration, but Gaya wouldn't let that happen. She modified it so it was safe, and it was still just as wonderful. Our family will forever be grateful for Gaya, and while I know my daughter will miss her terribly, we feel very sure this isn't goodbye. Our paths will cross again. And Gaya was sure to tell us that she'll always be available for continued love and support. With two kids in daycare, we toured countless facilities, and we knew immediately Gaya's was unlike any other. Five happy, healthy, caring years later, that's been confirmed over and over. My family feels especially lucky to have found Gaya's Schoolhouse after relocating to the area during the pandemic. After touring several preschools, we specifically chose this place because of the small group environment which was important for a young child who hasn't been in school for a year due to the pandemic, the emphasis on health and safety, the attention to each child's individual development pace and needs. Now that we've been here for a while, we cannot be happier about our choice! My son who was very shy at his previous preschool has made several very close friends at Gaya's that he cannot stop talking about now. At age 4, he is currently reading Dr. Seuss books independently, writing upper and lower case letters, doing additions and subtractions, and proudly taking home a big stack of projects every Friday. Gaya also emphasizes a lot on non-academic self-help skills like buttoning, zipping, tying shoes, which go a long way in boosting kids' confidence and taking ownership over their lives. Although the school is small, Gaya pulls together enough resources to give the kids good exposure to a variety of extracurricular activities - yoga, gymnastics, dancing, soccer, basketball... My daughter has been at Gaya's schoolhouse for nearly 2 years now, since she was about 6 months old. It has been a good fit for her and for us, especially since Gaya's schoolhouse is focused more on learning and play than most daycares. The things I appreciate most about Gaya's schoolhouse is that I don't see the kids in front of the TV, the small group of children with various ages, and the experience the staff has. I never worry about something happening to her while we're apart, and I know if anything comes up I'll be notified. Gaya is an absolute lifesaver, the most amazing guardian angel and inspirational educator we could have ever found for our children. We started our son at Gaya's at 9 months old, back in mid 2007. It became immediately apparent that we had made the best decision of our lives as parents. He quickly became socialized, used to interacting with children his age and older, and we were stunned at how quickly he began learning. Gaya's is no mere daycare, it is the most perfect preschool we could have ever found. It is an incredibly loving environment, and each child is taught from the beginning, with interpersonal connection and a curriculum catered to their age and abilities. The children also learn dancing, yoga and sports, and put on a wonderful event including songs, dances, and skits for the yearly graduation ceremony. It was not long before Gaya, her staff, and the other families there became somewhat of a second family to us, even sharing holidays together. Our son stayed at Gaya's until graduating to kindergarten (in all honestly we were all sad to tears to leave Gaya's). But he entered kindergarten far ahead of the other children in terms of intellect, conceptualization and socialization. Gaya even offered to help him with his homework after school, as his kindergarten let out at 12:30 and he was happily accustomed to learning until 4 or 5 PM each day. Our son is now 15, and remembers fondly his time at Gaya's Schoolhouse. We had our second child, a girl, 11 years after Nicholas, and even while pregnant we said "Thank God we still have Gaya!" Gaya was thrilled to hear we had another child on the way and anxiously awaited the day she could start working with our little one. We started her there at around that same 9 month mark and she too became quickly in love with learning and the friendships she has created while attending school there. Over the years my wife and I have talked about moving but usually the first thing out of one of our mouths is, "But Gaya is here." There is no bounds to the love, appreciation and respect my family has for Gaya and her school. We hope to see you in class someday soon! read more

She sent me lots of pictures and updated me every step of the way. It really felt like a partnership with Gaya. She worked with me on our schedule, feeding style and many other things. Gaya's Schoolhouse is a wonderful and nurturing preschool environment for babies on up to "big kids". Our son attended from 2011 to 2015, meeting many wonderful friends along the way. Gaya and her other friendly, caring teachers provide love, academic education, and "social" education - how to get along with others, how to look out for and assist kids younger than oneself, how to share, how to help each other - all the really important stuff. It is a welcoming home environment where healthy, organic, home-cooked meals (with water to drink) are the rule. Children benefit from a variety of focused group play, free play, group teaching, and individual attention. There are safe neighborhood walking trips, and there are supplemental classes offered in subjects like soccer, dance, and music. Kids also learn about the world around them and the wonders of nature, with hands-on projects like planting a garden, watching it grow, and enjoying the harvest...or observing the life cycle of a butterfly up close. Older children receive instruction in reading, writing, and math; art projects for all ages abound. I'm attaching an image from our five-year-old son, who, after enjoying music classes at Gaya's Schoolhouse, has become inspired to write his own songs using actual music notation! He is also progressing in reading and writing, addition and subtraction, and in general is excellently prepared to continue his successful school career by starting kindergarten this year. As customers for nearly five years with three kids attending, we were forced to leave without notice to protect the health and wellbeing of our kids, as well as our own. With the start of the Pandemic the quality of service deteriorated rapidly. The owner became very inflexible, unaccommodating, and rude. We were treated horribly on many occasions, depending on her daily mood. We were not the only ones as other parents have shared similar concerns with us and some of them even ended up leaving the daycare before we did for similar reasons. Although we understand the Pandemic has been hard on everyone, as customers we expect to be treated with respect and to receive certain level of service. We felt the owner started to exploit the situation and immediately reduced the hours and the quality of service. We were told the staff did not like hearing the 'cry' of children and were putting their hands over their ears (and yes, this was visually demonstrated by the owner herself). We were also told that the staff didn't like changing dirty diapers, especially for 'number 2' as it smelled so bad and they were covering their noses (and yes, this was visually demonstrated by the owner herself). The owner always found a way to put the guilt on the parents to a point where we were uncomfortable asking for anything especially if it was a complaint or criticism, to which the owner tended to respond defensively. One time during pickup, we noticed that our 2-year old daughter has poop in her diaper and politely asked if she could be changed; however, the owner's response was that she didn't have to change her as there has been a time when we dropped her off with dirty diaper in the morning. We were in disbelief and just left. There were subsequent times we picked up our kids with dirty diapers, but we were not comfortable asking the owner again and just closed our eyes and hurried back home to put a clean diaper on. The operating hours were reduced by two hours per day at the start of the Pandemic. After nearly a year of operating under the reduced hours, and while charging a per minute fee for being late, we asked the owner if she can go back to the normal hours, or at least add an additional hour as all the parents had to work. In response, the owner's demeanor got even more hostile and even drove my wife into tears one time during pickup. She did extend the closing time by half an hour, but it cost my wife a long period of being treated rudely by the owner since she was the one to send the e-mail on behalf of the parents asking for the change of the hours of operation. It was also the reason my wife did not feel comfortable providing a any notice for leaving the daycare because she felt that the owner's demeanor would change toward our children once she finds out we are leaving. She sent my wife very stern text messages when she was few minutes late for pickup on a few rare occasions, which causes a lot of stress while one is rushing back from work in traffic trying to keep their job while navigating significantly reduced daycare hours. The worst came when our six-year-old started first grade. To our shock, he tested at the very bottom of his class of 20+ kids considering that most children were also behind due to the Pandemic. In the last couple of years, we were constantly reassured by the owner that she can prepare kids for 1stgrade better than anyone else and yet we ended up in this horrible predicament. She also never indicated to us that he might be behind and not prepared for first grade. We had to worry not only about our son dealing with the adjustment of being at a new school, but also how to bridge the whole year worth of missed academic material. It has been a very difficult transition that has been ongoing to this day. Lastly, the emphasis on providing a very early payment each month was very annoying. The payment was due the last Friday of each month and we constantly felt harassed about it. It felt that the payment was way more important to the owner than the quality of service and what our needs were as customers. We are so much happier with our new daycare and feel liberated by the flexibility, the normal hours, the professionalism, the quality of care, the lack of pressure and stress put on us as parents, and the lack of emphasis on the payment way before the month even begins. read more

My two sons (four, and one and a half) have been going to daycare at Gaya's Schoolhouse since my eldest turned one. As new foster parents, my husband and I were wary of sending our kids--both of whom were born into a dysfunctional biological family situation--anyplace where we didn't feel that that they would be surrounded love, care, and stability. As artists, we knew that our kids should have their senses stimulated by music and unique food and have their minds expanded through cultural exchange and exposure to language and community. The moment I met Gaya, I knew--intuitively--that she would provide those things. Over the course of three years, two of which were spent in a pandemic, she hasn't disappointed.Gaya is family. Family breaks down the boxes we put people in; family nourishes our bodies and minds; family teaches us how to take care of our own needs. It's hard for me not to be emotional when I write about our experience at Gaya's Schoolhouse because Gaya is, in some ways, a surrogate mother or grandmother to our kids. Our 5 year old daughter has been going to Gays's Schoolhouse for about one and a half years now. We love that she receives lots of attention in a small group. Gaya and her staff are warm, caring and attentive. This is a stimulating environment for young children and it has sparked a lot of love for learning, play and social growth. We sent our one-year-old daughter to school with Gaya for just over half a year until the Coronavirus pandemic began. At that point, our working situations changed, and we were able to care for her at home. Prior to that, our daughter loved to go to school with Gaya, Vika, and Karmen. She has always been a quick learner, but we were still amazed at the new knowledge, vocabulary, and skills she would learn at school. Gaya does a very good job to involve parents and the coziness of running the business out of her home really made the experience feel special. Gaya cares greatly for her students and it shows in the relationships she builds with the students and parents. We found Gaya's School House/Yahjian Child Care via yelp. When we visited right away we could tell this place was different and special. The first birthday party we attended (about a month after joining) many parents told us how great it was and how their children exceled when they reached grade school. We love and trust Gaya, Gohar, and Ida. Our boy is so well behaved and we know it is due to the love and discipline at Gayas. Everyday he brings home art. At school they participate in music, zumba, soccer. Our son loves it there and we love that when he sees classmates in and out of school the first thing they do is hug! It really is run like a large family. Gaya will call to check on your child over the weekend if they are sick. He has been attending since 7 months old and now is almost 3. We moved to town just before my son's first birthday. He had never been in a daycare setting before and we were so anxious to find the right place. From my first phone call with Gaya, I knew this was going to be great. She was so warm with him and made him feel comfortable, which in turn made us feel comfortable. Gaya's Schoolhouse really is a family daycare, not just because it's in a family home, but because they treat you like family. She cooks all her healthy, organic meals from scratch, the kids are greeted with a hug each day, birthdays and holidays become a big celebration. The meals and art projects all take place around a table and the bigger kids help the littler kids. The outdoor area and extracurricular activities offered are great too. She has so much experience with kids, and it really shows. Of course, we have to praise Ms. Vika and Ms. Ami, the other two teachers, as well. My son took to them immediately and they were among the first names he learned to say. In our year at Gaya's Schoolhouse, he's learned so much and grown so much, no doubt because of their care and socialization. I had been hearing about Gaya and her wonderful schoolhouse since we moved to California in 2009. When my son turned one, I decided to send him to a daycare and met Gaya through a friend. It's been a year now. We are literally like a family. Gaya even assured my mom that she will take good care of her grandson. My son had a very bad case of eczema. Gaya had done lots of research, talked to professionals, gave priceless advice since then. Gaya, Aida (like a big sister to the kids) and Emmi (former caregiver, lovely personality) took very good care of his delicate skin. Some of his first words were Gaya, Aida and his friends' names :) We never have difficulty to take him to school, even on Mondays! Their approach to the kids was the most important factor for us to make our mind. Our 2 and 5 year-olds have been attending Gaya's Schoolhouse for almost 8 months now. Our older son will be going to Kindergarten this August. When he started attending Gaya's Schoolhouse, he didn't speak English fluently, was reluctant to communicate with new people, and didn't know how to approach children and initiate games with them. Thanks to Gaya, who has individualized approach, gives individual attention to every child, and guided us in what we needed to work on, our son changed a lot. He is eager to speak with new people. He speaks English fluently, knows all letters and sounds, can write simple words in upper and lower-case, began reading simple Dr. Seuss books, and performs simple additions and subtractions. Most importantly, he likes to learn how to read and write and shows interest in learning more. Our younger son didn't say many words and didn't follow directions very well when he started attending Gaya's Schoolhouse. Since then, his speaking and listening skills improved a lot. He says a lot of words, diligently repeats new words, and tries to put 2-3 words in a sentence. Our daughter has been going to Gaya Schoolhouse since the past 3 years. I love Gaya Schoolhouse for the following reasons: 1. Gaya and her staff love children. They genuinely love kids and talk about them all endlessly. Their commitment to their mental and physical wellbeing is evident. As a parent, it was very important to me to know that she is with someone who cares for her when I am not with her. 2. Kids are taught the 3 R's AND all kinds of other information. Each month has a theme and kids learn at their level since all of them are different ages. She regularly got homework, which was a coloring item, or to bring a book that was related to the theme of the month. There are various field trips like plays, spring garden tours, Halloween parades to educate and connect the parents. There are Mother's Day, Father's day and grandparent's day events. There is a strong sense of community. Each year the kids participate in a graduation event where babies, 1 year olds to 5 year olds participate. They do a music class and a science class year round and are taught a bit of Spanish and Armenian as well. They bring home art work, potted seeds, and terrariums. The curriculum is very rich, and most importantly, my daughter has a blast. Gaya has taught her to be inquisitive and excited to learn new things. 3. Gaya has a gift with transferring knowledge to children. I am always amazed at how quickly my daughter picks up what she is communicating or teaching. She has a no nonsense approach with the kids, teaching them discipline and respect for each other, but at the same time also love and caring towards each other. 4. The kids at the school are all different ages. My daughter has an understanding and appreciation for kids of different ages and I believe this is what helps her to be socially adept. 5. The childcare is run out of Gaya's home. It was important to me that my daughter was in a home environment for the first 5 years of her life before she went to an institution called 'school'. Gaya 'Schoolhouse' gave us the perfect combination of a great learning environment in a homely setting. Gaya's family, her husband, and her two amazing daughters are also very invested in the childcare. They help out every year with the events and are a big support system for all of us. If you are looking for a safe, loving, community-oriented daycare or preschool for your child in the Glendale/Los Angeles area, there isn't a better place to take your child than Gaya's Schoolhouse. My daughter has been at Gaya's for more than two years, beginning when she was just five months. As a first time mom, I was really anxious about turning my baby over to someone else, but it wound up being a very easy transition. It was so clear on day one just how much Gaya and the other teachers love all the children. Not once, in all the time that she has been there, have I ever have to deal with a child crying because she didn't want to go to school. Instead, every morning she wakes up and asks when she can go to see "her guys." But it's not only that the schoolhouse has created a safe and loving environment for my daughter; I give a lot of credit to the schoolhouse for the fact that she is well ahead of her peers across the board in her developmental and social skills. She began talking, singing, and dancing very early (every school year concludes with a performance of the music, dances, and stories the children have learned). Her ability to engage in a real conversation routinely shocks other parents. She is also very affectionate, imaginative, polite, and interacts very well with other children. The fact that Gaya's is a 40 minute roundtrip drive from our house is a testament to how happy we have been with the schoolhouse. At two my daughter could have started at my work daycare, but we knew that keeping her at Gaya's was in her best interests. Unfortunately, we are moving 40 miles further away and now have to take her out of the schoolhouse. Without a doubt, taking her away from the teachers and friends she loves so much is the most difficult part of moving away. In addition to learning all-important socialization skills, he received basic instruction in reading and writing, music appreciation, dance, exploring different foods and customs from around the world...the list goes on. There is a strong emphasis on language development as well, which is a wonderful bonus for all of her children given their natural facility to acquire/recognize new language skills. What can you say about a five year-old who, upon graduation, could count from one to ten in SIX languages? Most important is the respect and love all of Gaya's children have for her.
