The only word I can think of to aptly describe Gazuza is "Eurotrashy." It's trendy & hip, sure, with a lot of would-be hipsters-gone-corporate lounging around in satin dresses and collared shirts, but it's also got a distinctly European feel - & not always in a good way. The inside of Gazuza feels like a Bret Easton Ellis or Jay McInerney novel, like people are probably doing lines in the bathroom & comparing business cards at the tables, & the pulsating, pounding pseudo-techno is enough to disoriente you, make you feel like you're watching a slow-motion, Vicodin-laced, flashing-lights version of yourself. That said, I really do like their patio area. It's got a fun view of the street below, so if you're sitting near the railing you can people-watch over Connecticut. And the hookah is simply great -- smooth, long-lasting & satisfying, although certainly NOT inexpensive. I got a champagne mojito to accompany our mint hookah -- an excellent choice on both fronts. The drink was outstanding, although as others have said, next time I'll know to order two at once to overcompensate for the slowwww, slowwwww service. I noticed some people have clicked "no" on whether or not Gazuza is wheelchair accessible. In fact, it is. Even though it's is an upstairs joint, it's got an elevator. In fact, the night I was there, three people in wheelchairs/scooters came in a group together -- & although they had a little trouble navigating the closely spaced outdoor furniture, the staff was very helpful in accommodating them & it worked out just fine. Finally: The last time I tried to do hookah at Gazuza, they were PACKED. I mean, no seats anywhere, practically no standing room anywhere, never-gonna-get-a-seat ridiculosity. We left. In closing? I'm giving this 1star because of customer service. I call to get a copy of a receipt sent to me for business expense purposes (pretty simple right?). The manager, who is there, refuses to talk to me on the phone regarding the issue telling his employee to tell me that it is against the law to send me the receipt unless I come in, show my ID and the credit card used. I live on the west coast...I told them that it was in fact, not against the law and still no help. I told them I had all the information for proof to get the receipt...and still nothing! When you give horrible service to your customers regardless if they are at the establishment or over the phone. It is unacceptable and NOT a good way to conduct business. read more

To maximize your experience at Gazuza, you really need to make a reservation and pay the minimum for a table. I believe they range from $70-$150. Given the high prices of this establishment, it won't be hard. Besides, how can you smoke a hookah standing and walking around? The layout of Gazuza is narrow but they win points with their large, heated patio. I recommend sitting out here to avoid the smoke induced dry eye and save some of your clothing (and your hair). For a nightlife scene it's pretty good. Great and diverse crowd and occasionally they have a DJ who drops some cool mixes. Here's where Gazuza could gain points: Offer an area with no tables for those just wanting to mingle sans Hookah. The atmosphere here is cool enough to draw folks in Better waiter service. The sad thing is, Gazuza used to be cool. A medium sized hookah place with a sushi menu; Gazuza has changed managers 5 times in the 2 years I've been going there. Every time they change managers they change chefs, and bartenders, and DJs, and cocktailers, and HVAC levels. This newest person has not only neglected to introduce himself to most of the regulars (at a bar that makes it's money off a regular crowd), but had gotten rid of all the aforementioned parts and instructed the surviving waitstaff to act like mindless drones. FRIEND, "Can I have a XxXxXxX, its a drink with blank, blank and blank?" BARTENDER, "I don't know that drink." FRIEND, "Well, these are the ingredients." BARTENDER, "If it's not on the menu, i'm not allowed to make it." Shisha is a very particular market, if you are anti-tobacco you already are off the list. Now they have added the imposition of a $100 minimum just to sit down, no thank you. Fancy hookah place with great food and tragic service. I hung out on the outdoor patio on a cold night. They provide overhead heaters, although the one by us wasn't working. Our service was atrocious. We could never find our waitress to the extent that my friends had to physically get up numerous times to get service. No one replenished the coal in our hookah. Finally, we gave up on that. The patio gets pretty packed on a Saturday night. People seem to mill about the tables. Makes it even harder to find that elusive waitress. For dinner, I got a tuna ceviche, which is the "traditional ceviche." It was amazing. The tuna was fresh and the seasoning complemented it perfectly. You get lot of tuna - it was a great value. For drinks, I got the caiparinha, which had less alcohol than usual, but tasted good anyway. The clientele is predominantly middle-eastern, but there is a pretty good mix of people. When my guy friend brought me to Gazuza my first reaction was "Wow, a place I haven't been to in DC. Surprising." The place itself is definitely an upscale for DC. Part on a balcony part inside, my immediate reaction was positive. The population of DC is roughly 600,000 people. The population of Manhattan is about 1.6 million. So, a million extra people guarantees Manhattan club, lounge, and bar owners that they can be picky in who they let in. I came here with five other people. I was a little wary of what I was getting myself into, especially with the hassles of traveling in a decent sized group in DC, but the capacity of the lounge was surprisingly calm for 1 am on a Saturday night. We didn't have any trouble getting a table right away. The peach hookah was okay, smooth but a bit light in flavor and smoke density for my liking. The drink selection was limited (3-4 basic bottle beers and 4 cocktails that were nothing spectacular), but they did stay open for that extra hour for daylight savings. The waitress was also very attentive and stopped by every so often to refill our drink orders. The music was a little loud, especially for a hookah bar where people would go to sit and talk. I liked this place, but since I really like to smoke the shisha I may be a bit partial. the atmosphere was nice. A little bit on the small side but not so much to make it uncomfortable. the shisha selection was decent, and they will allow you to make your own combination of flavors. It wasn't really the service I expected for a place that was not really that close to capacity and came off as a place that would really extend themselves to take care of the customer. Service is absolutely wonderful. Very attentive waiters and bartenders make sure that everyone has what they need and is having a good time. I like to sit outside with a drink and some hookah. I'm definitely a fan of the low key vibe. As a female, I am always a fan of places where I can go and not have to worry about it being a meat market. Everyone minds their own business and stays with their respective group, especially if you're at a table. The actual bar might be a bit different, but it still seemed people remained with their own friends. It's pricey. My rating is "Meh" the reason why is the never ending problem with most Hookah Lounges... You're not a night club, you're a lounge. The music is way too high that our group literally had to scream to hear each other. And of course the staff refused to bring the volume down even thought we were the only people in the whole place. I thought that was rude. The service was alright. The Sushi tasted like airport sushi and the rolls were smaller than average. But we got charged about $65 for three rolls. The Hooka arrived quickly but after the first two charcoals you got charged $1 for each extra piece. And the Hookah price is the highest in the area. Its about $22. Over all, the experience wasn't fun, we all left with a headache because of all that loud music and the screaming. and the check was much more than we expected. Once you walk into Gazuza, you know you're at a hip, cool place with plenty of room to chill with some friends. It can get crowded, but the times I've been I never had a problemf finding a place to sit. If you can get to it, the outdoor porch offers a cute balcony view of Connecticut Ave. It still carries on the hip vibe without feeling like you're in a cheesy patio. The prices for drinks are ok, but you get what you pay for. The last time I went the Sex on the Beach wasn't made right and they don't know how to make a Red Snapper. Went back here recently when I was in DC. I came here with my cousin and sister for their sushi happy hour. Honestly, I haven't had good sushi on the East Coast, and I didn't think good sushi on this coast existed until I came here. BEST sushi on the East Coast EVER!! Tastes super fresh, and utterly delicious. Their belly tuna was amazing, so was the salmon. Also got this other one, I forget the name of it, but it has caviar on top. The torched tuna was okay--tasted more cooked than sushi should be, but still not bad. Their sashimi is $1 a piece during happy hour. Not bad at all considering it tastes amazing! The closed in area they I sat in was beautiful. The large TV's, the house music that turned into trap, and turned into Spanish trap music was fantastic. The hookah was smooth (Guava and Mint), drinks were delectable, and the sushi!!!! F'ing yummy as hell!. My waitress was a slim (i believe Russian girl) who had the beautifulest smile and was the friendliest person I've probably ever met, she made sure we were good on drinks and food and changed out the charcoal without us telling her anything . At the end of the night after Jack shots, three rounds of sushi, a hookah that was still good smooth and tasty the bill came back totally affordable (another lol). Way too loud to make conversation enjoyable, and it's not a dance place, which would make more sense. Well, I liked it, though I've read the complaints articulated in some of the less generous reviews and I think they have a point (thus 4 instead of 5). Granted, someone who wrote on 10/24/10 said it was a $100 minimum - my girlfriend and I were told it was $60. I don't know if they changed their policy, if it was on a different night or if it's because we have vaginas. The minimum is kind of obnoxious, I agree, but the reality is that this place styles itself after a European style lounge with a fairly international crowd and a minimum like that is par for the course by those standards - even cheap. Plus I found the hookas were affordable in comparison to hookah bars I've seen in Boston (though I haven't been to another hookah joint in or around D.C. yet) - compare $19 to $25 and up. If you sit down and order a hookah, and your group ordesr 4 drinks off the menu in total, which are mainly priced around $10, you've made your minimum. Ultimately I think the minimum is there to ensure that one person doesn't hog a table for 4 and that the people at the tables are actually there to smoke and not just get a drink, which they could easily do up at the bar. Furthermore, the host who initially warned us of the $60 minimum went out of his way later on to let us know that the minimum would get more lax later in the evening and when we saw an open table around then he not only seated us but moved our coats for us. The waitresses/bartenders were great. They weren't chatty or anything, all business, but they took our orders promptly and provided what we asked for quickly, so who can complain? Furthermore, my friend and I ended up merging tables with the two dudes sitting next to us and this created a bit of floating credit card slash tab confusion which they handled no problem. The champagne mojito I ordered was bleh, but I thought the malbec I ordered after was pretty nice, and my friend seemed to enjoy her 3 flirtinis. The flavor selection was indeed impressive. We ordered Strawberry, which was my sheesha of choice back when I had a hookah, and I was disappointed that the flavor on this one wasn't coming through. In fact, our hookah seemed kind of ashy and the smoke seemed a bit thin. I'm used to a thick, sumptuous cloud of opaque white smoke that just reeks of flavor, the kind you can blow into a brandy snifter and then suck back up and blow smoke rings with after. This smoke was definitely not party-trick quality, but it was the only hookah I tried so I can't speak to whether this was typical or if we just got an unlucky, poorly packed pot. Worth trying again to find out, that's for sure, since we had a really nice time there. The people there were a different crowd than I'm used to seeing around town - very sociable, very easy to meet strangers. Had a nice chat with a beautiful Nigerian woman in the bathroom about race relations in America. Met a gay guy who was just back from deployment in Afghanistan. My friend got to nerd out about sustainable living with another guy we met. We're already planning future hookah dates with our new friends via Facebook. The room itself was cheaply decorated but it was enough to create the feel it needed to create. The people, on the other hand, were well-decorated and fun to look at. Really disappointing actually. Let's see. The people are cool, but it gets far too crowded to even have fun on a weekend unless you've got a table ahead of time. It's not even like a huge problem to get a table, but every time I've smoked shisha at Gazuza, it's just not done properly, it's not smooth, I'm choking on ash... and then the drinks are just weak and far from fantastic... Service is just absolutely terrible. The bouncer is an ass hole and I just find the majority of people who work there to be quite irritating. The heated patio is cool, but come on. It's not THAT fabulous. Regardless, I always tend to run into people I know there... so that gives it a little boost in my book. Anyway I'm trying not to waste so much of my time there anymore. It was just a nice place to sit back, relax, smoke, and not think about stuff... And here comes the plunge... - There are certain places that are uppity and still friendly. This used to be one but now it isn't. - There is a table minimum. These tables are tiny 2 ft by 2 ft tables and can seat maybe up to 3 if you want elbow room. I went with a group of 6 folks and we just wanted hookah and a couple drinks.. We sat down and the waitress pulls up 2 tables and right off the bat tells us we have to order at least 200 dollars of stuff. Hi! Nice to meet you too! - For those who just want to do hookah (which is what the 6 of us wanted to do), you're probably not going to meet the table minimum...the waitress told us we'd have to put it up at the bar (which was super crowded...or stand around. I can't handle going to hookah bars very often especially those that have zero ventilation. Our friend brought us here one evening after dinner and I was skeptical at first. The hookah bar is located on the second floor, and there is indoor bar seating and patio seating with windows. The patio area is extremely well-ventilated, and service is good. You can order drinks as well as hookah which is rare for some hookah spots that I've been to. The hookah only got harsh once and the lady fixed it immediately. My boyfriend and I randomly came here a few Saturdays ago as we wanted a chill place to go that has hookahs. The place was full but not overly busy where you have to scream to hear the people you're there with. They placed a nice variety of music and it was a wonderful change of pace not to be stuck in a place playing all top 40 hits. Our server was friendly and very attentive over the entire time we were here. Always refreshing drinks before they were empty, and replaced our coals frequently. This is one of my main hangouts. Another of the Latin Concepts venues (along with Chi-cha lounge and Guarapo) where hookahs, sushi, and mojitos are the mainstay. Even in the winter the balcony is good stuff with the wind screens put up and the heaters blasting. I think they have a pretty good happy hour with $6 mojitos and $4 california rolls but regardless of when you go you have to try the ceviche. I can't eat it fast enough. SO GOOD! Staff is all very friendly, especially if you're friendly to them first and don't treat folks like their just the help. The other thing I like about it is its never insanely busy to the point you can't walk around. I also really dig the DJs. Haha...I had to laugh at some of these reviews -- where did the hookah's there? I was there this past weekend (6/27/09) and they had their arsenal out. The staff is very friendly and the clientele is very attractive. I agree that this place is not a place where you can mingle freely with everyone, but DC has plenty of other venues where that's possible. And besides, if you're really in the mood to strike a conversation, you can -- the other people don't bite. I talked *gasp!* to the fine ladies next to me to borrow their tongs to move the coal -- obviously that led to more small talk, so it's not the people there. People talk to friendly people. Anyway, this place is a staple when I want a chill night with my friends and just listen to good lounge music without caring if someone will start a fight next to me a la Adams Morgan or start throwing up next to me, a la Adams Morgan. If you're thinking of going crazy rowdy here, don't bother -- it won't happen. If you want to go out and chill and see where the night leads you -- I would absolutely recommend it. PS - the mojitos and the caiprianas and the grey goose/tonic are strong and are very well mixed. I'm not sure about the other cocktails they serve. read more
