This place is beautiful. Everything about the decor entails fine detail which gives MK lounge an upscale touch. They also have professional photographer that takes and prints your photo same day which is such a nice touch to the ambiance. The menu and happy hour is perfect. I've been here several times and I'm not impressed. On weekends, the lines are super long. I was here recently for a bar crawl and the whole point is that you don't have to wait in the line with a wristband which I had. The guy at the door didn't care and told me to wait in the line. The drinks are overpriced and very watered down. In fact, some of the bartenders don't know how to make basic drinks. Their "VIP" section is a joke! The DC scene is just different these days! I get that it's a lounge so of course there's music because there is a vibe to maintain BUT this really is excessive. In any event, fair warning. Hookah is good, especially with the prices they offer for happy hour (and there are weekend happy hour specials as well). Servers are friendly. We stumbled in here by accident while it was pouring. There is security at the door, so don't bring in any outside food, etc. (he thought our shopping bags were food) We took seats up stairs, it was well ventilated, other guests were seated at least 6 ft from us. They have happy hour drinks, food, and hookah specials until 8 I believe. Food was decent, but not a fan of being served cold sauce for hot mozzarella sticks. Not only do they take FOREVER to bring drinks out (meanwhile it's not busy), but they have terrible customer service. I had an issue with the hookah that I ordered because it was too harsh. I told the bartender/waitress, and I told the manager. They did not check on the issue until I repeatedly spoke upon it. In addition, I was asked to change my own hookah which caused me to burn myself. I 100% do not recommend. There are many other hookah lounges in the area you can visit besides this one. This is by far my favorite happy hour spot in dc. The service is usually great. But of course it depends on the bartender. Most of the ladies have been there a while and know the ropes. They offer hookah which I like. They have a DJ and they have amazing lighting. Gives a cool relaxed chill vibe. read more

I had a great experience at MK lounge. I was impressed by the happy hour pricing for drinks and hookah. I ended up getting a tequila sunrise and watermelon mint hookah and enjoyed both. The DJ is horrible. All of the transitions have been awful, switches between genres every song, loudly yells obscenities and slurs and has no interest in playing any music of the the current decade regardless of the crowd occupying the location. I've been to MK Lounge a few times since my last review and overall the experience has been fine. However, when I went yesterday, we experienced poor customer service. My friend and I ordered a hookah, which arrived within 10 minutes. After waiting for over 30 minutes for a drink and food, our server came over saying she forgot to put in the drink order so I asked for a complimentary shot since it had been at least 30 minutes since we ordered. She claimed it was only 6 minutes and showed us her toast device that she puts orders into. I reminded her that 6 minutes ago is when I requested hot sauce and ketchup be added to my order, but the food order was at minimum 30 minutes prior. She replies that I never asked for condiments, which is also untrue. I cancelled my food order since I couldn't believe that she wouldn't admit to not putting in the food order until I asked for condiments and then saying that I never asked for condiments. My friend and I were sober, so we 100% in the right state of mind and remember everything very clearly. When I asked for a coal change on the hookah, the same server was avoiding eye contact and didn't even remove the previous coal - she just put 2 new ones on top. When I asked her to remove the old coal, she said "oh there's coal on there?" Then just brushed some of it off. I had to ask another server for tongs and fix the hookah myself. Our server was friendly in the beginning, but the bold faced lying was too much. read more

My boyfriend and I are visiting DC from Philly and I used Yelp to find this place. We came on a Friday night and we had a GREAT time. We arrived around 10:30 PM, so we didn't pay a cover. It wasn't that many people there just yet which allowed for more space to move around. There's an upstairs and downstairs, we sat downstairs in one of the small booths in the back. Drinks and hookah are pricey, but that's DC for you. The DJ (DJ Sim) per their Instagram was LIT!!!!! We had such a good time because he played a great mix of hip hop, r&b, soca, African music, everything. He had the entire place singing and dancing. Tips- place is small so I would avoid coming with 6+ people unless you get there early or buy a bottle to guarantee seating. The DJ sits upstairs so it's a little more room to dance up there. I Love MK lounge, but when you go and buy a table with Bottles they are clearly switching the liquors in the bottles. I ordered a bottle of Henny and Dusse, both bottles had a unique taste to them that did not resemble either brand. When I brought it to the servers attention. She acted shocked but i asked her to bring another bottle unopened and she then claimed the open the bottles in the back to make it quicker to pour. I loveeeeeee this place! It is so chic and sexy inside. Great renovation! They offer good food and pricing, fries were AMAZING! The margarita was good, pretty waitresses, hookah and the dj... DJ LOUD was soooo dope! I mean I wasn't sure if I wanted to dance, eat - dance drink? Dance talk... it was a chill Wednesday night but he made it feel like it was a Friday /Saturday! I was disappointed the bar was limited, they didn't have grapefruit juice or the ingredients for one if their signature drinks Cuervo sunshine. My friend got the 3 for 3 - chicken wings/chicken tenders/fries. He smashed them! It was described to be the perfect crisp and juicy meet for the tenders and the wings were good apparently. The upstairs was nice- you could only sit down if you opened a tab - which basically gave you the only option to sit downstairs or at the bar. It wasn't like they were selling sections and we already had drinks. We ended up just going back down stairs. The lighting is sexy, it's very narrow like most bars on u street . You'd think buying a table/popping bottles begets a modicum of customer service but not at MK Lounge. Had to fight for my Yelp check in offer LOL! Issue: Management didn't disclose any info about a cutoff when my friends got a table (ordered bottle service, 2 Hookas) so it was a sobering blow when they rushed us out after 2 hours because table was reserved for another group. We were confused but too tipsy to make a resolute stand. Boy was I ecstatic to use my Yelp check in offer (10% off) as suspected our servers eyes rolled to the back of her head and she condescendingly asked me "what am I supposed to do with that" and I smiled and explained.--she'd been rude all night-- she snatched my phone without my consent and came back 10minutes later with my check in offer redeemed. Good: the interior is a cut above the other Ust hookah lounges and even coal service was good. They have a wide flavor selection! Only U spot lounge I've been to that utilizes both floors. I frequent Ethiopian establishments so I have a high tolerance for poor customer service - MK is a different beast. my friends got at table at MK Lounge this weekend . The service was great until it wasn't. After dancing and hanging out at my friends table, I needed to go outside for some fresh air. I get overstimulated easily. I walked out of the door with my water bottle. after about 10min I felt like I could go back in. However, the person at the front told me that I had to pay $20 to get back in. I was confused then irritated because I literally was outside for 10min. I also walked passed the hostess desk and they didn't say anything. they also never stamped our hands when we arrived. I had several people vouch for me that night the bouncers/security, the bottle girl and my friends and he said nope. I asked to see the manager and he claimed he was the manager, so I wasn't let back into club. Honestly I had more fun at the other bars. I not sure if this place is on hard times and needs more money. If they keep this up I can't see them staying in business long. Make sure they stamp you even if you have a table and make sure you ask for a stamp even if they don't provide one. Also beware of the petty shiesty manager. Everyone else was nice tho! read more

But as a faithful yelper, I wanted to see what others had to say about the establishment first. The reviews weren't the best but I decided to be the judge for myself. Everything was awesome initially, two hours into our visit, three rounds later and we were asked to move our table due to a large party coming in. We went from a comfortable leather seated area to two chairs and a foot stool. We obliged, no problem, but inquired as to if they were in the practice of making paying guests move their seats to accommodate new guests. The manager never came over to apologize for his server's error in seating us in a section for large parties ONLY! When he finally showed up, he could really care less. No apology, no accommodations for the inconvenience, and to top it off he didn't even want to disclose his name asking me why? 3.5 stars for a spot that I only visit when catching up with a good friend, D., on infrequent work trips to DC. Sort of our hangout spot for the music, drinks, and people watching. Tonight was a more relaxed early Friday dinner - fried shrimp and French fries - and drink, on a quiet night when it seems many Howard U. students had already gone home for the semester. A prior visit was more lively and drinks fueled. The upstairs is where it's at, with a DJ, big screen, and lots of people dressed up well for the night. It is Ethiopian owned, but I haven't noticed anything distinctly Ethiopian about the place (no music or food that I heard or saw). Service can be spotty, but all good when just reconnecting with an old friend. All in all, always a fun night. read more

I have been here twice and I have had different experiences each time. BUT, now I understand why both visits differ. First time (Saturday night), I was upstairs, bottle service area. Apparently, the servers are rude because, they want you to spend, spend, spend. However, when the bar is just OK and everyone in your party are not "social drinkers" then it is not a "win-win" for the rude servers. Music was good, hookah flavors plentiful. Second visit was great on a Wednesday night. We sat at the bar downstairs. DJ KayBHart was amazing. She received so many compliments. The hookah was stellar, coal service was good. Better vibe, little pressure to "get up" and bar service with freaking smile. Great, low expectation bar, good vibe. I can't comment on food, but I can say the interior is not chic. Not sure if they're under new management, but here are a few changes: they now charge a cover charge, there's "VIP" sections with bottle service (like the Diet Coke version of the club), staff is def the friendliest, they will put your pic with a shoutout on the screen if you buy a section (cute touch!), OH AND they use a tool to make sure you get no more than the precise amt of liquor in each pour. read more

It's normally the same lady who serves on the second floor. We have been rushed out in the past, she has refused to honor our yelp promo, and the service is always too slow. It was a beautiful day on Saturday so I decided to go to found a nice lounge with hookah and good music . Sundays they have a $20 hookah and $5 drinks. So they DJ was nice playing all the hits it was a cool vibes . I ordered a fish platter which was so BOMB and I ordered a Hennessy and come since they was around 6 dollars or so . This is where the shit hit the fan, it was 2 people where she could split the check which was 80 . So the bartender swipe 1 card twice and then had the nerve to say you can just pay her back with cash app smh . So I told her excuse it's not rocket science to split the check for 2 people and then I ask for the manager. No manager was available out course so I just called my bank and handled it . I would love to comeback because the vibes was good but I will only use cash since bartender can't split a $80 tabs amongst 2 people smh ‍ read more

1) The music is way too loud. You cannot hear the person next to you unless they lean in. 2) I ordered a vodka, club, and lime, and there was no carbonation in my drink. Very weird. I mentioned this to server and basically she said there's nothing she can do about it. 3) They are not willing to honor the Yelp promo unless you tell them beforehand that you are going to use it. That makes me believe they give you less food or less liquor in your drinks or maybe just less service overall. Why would you need to know beforehand? 4) My friends ordered the egg rolls and said they came out cold. 5) After a certain time of night I think all the drinks become $10. I asked for another drink of what I had been drinking and was given tequila with a lemon slice instead. When I said I didn't want it and I want my money back I was told they don't do refunds. Maybe they thought I'd give in and just let them fix the mistake, but now I didn't want it anymore. I don't believe a business should force a customer to purchase alcohol they don't want. I told the manager I can get a refund from my bank, but I'd rather just deal with it now. Only when I mentioned the possibility of a charge back with my bank, did he turn around to the cashiering area to void my payment like I knew he could all along (just didn't want to).
