Their shtick seems…read moreto be a rotating fusion egg roll option, along with some other deep fried fare, like the fish and chips and arancini when I saw them that day. Despite my love for fish and chips, you can get that at many an old school chip wagon, and their turkey dinner egg roll was too enticing to turn down. The line up at Roll With It was blessedly short when we were there, almost non-existent in fact. This probably had to do with them being so new on the scene and the line up of 50+ people for Ol' School Donuts which went past their trailer and may have obscured them or made people think that RWI was busy. Not so good for their business, but it worked out for my tight schedule that evening. My egg roll was served up quickly, a nice brown to the wrapper, drizzled with cranberry sauce and a little cup of gravy on the side for dipping. Inside the egg roll was a generous portion of very tender and moist turkey breast, along with a savoury dressing that gave more depth of flavour to each bite. The wrapper was amazing, one of he best I can recall having. Thin and super crisp despite the moist filling, there was no doughy layer at all on the inside. Perfection. Normally I don't go out of my way to have cranberry sauce with my turkey dinners, but I enjoyed the sweet but tangy flavours that it added, and they didn't go over the top with the portion. The gravy was decent; it didn't blow me away but it was alright and made for good dipping. The $7 price tag for an egg roll had me a bit concerned at first, but it was a hearty roll and well worth it quality wise, so don't let it put you off. Roll With It is surprisingly lax in their social media presence, so it's harder to track them down than many of their competitors in the city, but I definitely want to have more of their menu to really understand how they roll.

Most recently I have sampled the turkey dinner egg roll (which by far is a crowd fav) this is basically my childhood dream wrapped up in bite sized portions of goodness. The egg roll wrapper itself is not overwhelming rather crispy and delicate with moms fixings in the middle! It can't be beat! The side of gravy melts in your mouth with the detailed cranberry sauce on the side to boot. They offer a simple yet eclectic menu of fusion egg rolls, arancini, fancy fish (also a fav), speciality burgers and much more. I have been a major groupie chasing this truck from various food truck rallies and events as well as all the way out to rainbow haven beach last summer. I am not totally sure where they plan to set up shop this food truck season but tracking this truck down is a must!

Centrally located on Argyle above the Grand Parade, it was a sunny but breezy day - perfect for eating outside. The menu on this bright red truck is pretty compact, mainly focused on burgers and hot dogs, although they're amped up versions of these handheld food classics. I'm talking a bacon-wrapped, deep fried hot dog; a donair sausage; these aren't your typical tube steaks. My friend snagged their poutine, while I went with the donair sausage and fries. It was a short wait, and soon we were on a bench in the Grand Parade while hungry starlings looked on with jealousy through their black, soulless eyes. The poutine was a big hit. Their fries are on the thin, shoestring end of the spectrum; similar to McDonald's in diameter but with the golden brown colour and the deeper flavour of a hand cut fry. The curds quickly yielded to the hot fries and gravy, which was rich and not too salty. All in all, a well executed version of one of our national dishes. The donair sausage was a good size, tucked away in a lightly toasted bun, with chopped onion, tomato and a squirt of donair sauce on top. I don't know if Eats makes their own donair sausages or procures them from elsewhere, but they're pretty darn good. They've got a smooth texture and a flavour that might not be exactly that of your typical donair, but it's earthy and spicy and a solid effort. The donair sauce added that pleasing bit of sweetness and the onions and tomatoes brought their tartness and acidity to the plate (cardboard box?), and also kept this from being a completely vegetable-free meal. Did I mention that this was also effectively my breakfast? Luckily my shameful breakfast was at least a tasty one. If I'm ever in the neighbourhood, I wouldn't hesitate to give one of their burgers a go, or maybe even the bacon-wrapped hot dog, just maybe not for my first meal of the day next time.

Offering a bit more diverse menu than Bud, I stopped by here earlier this year on my way to the Mooseheads' Memorial Cup celebration at the Grand Parade. Right off the bat, you notice how inexpensive their meals are. A one piece fish and chips is a mere $6 taxes in, and two is $8. I played it safe since this was my first meal of the day and went for the one piece. After a short wait, I plopped down on a nearby bench in front of the library. The fish was a good size and came with a lot of fries, however I didn't see any tartar sauce bottles handy and none was provided. The fish had a nice mild haddock flavour and quite crunchy batter, although it was a bit on the greasy side. The fries were hand-cut and fairly crispy for being such. All in all, pretty good bang for my buck, but not the quality that is gonna blow you away. If you do get food from any vendor by the library, I suggest you keep on walking to find somewhere else to sit. The starlings were probably the boldest I've ever encountered, with one actually flying at my plate to try and steal fries! I had to throw fries to them to keep the aggressive little jerks at bay.

Halifax foodie shame alert: until this week, I'd never eaten at Bud the Spud. That's right, the…read morechip wagon that pre-dates possibly every other mobile food merchant in the city. This was a result of a combination of generally not being nearby mid-day and a certain amount of laziness and culinary condescension (just regular, non-gourmet fries? Pffft). But recently I've been wanting to hit up this stalwart of Spring Garden Road, and made my way here after first burning off some calories at the gym. They've got a few more things than fries and pop, although it's just sausages and hot dogs. Simple stuff, but that's fine. Their combo deal is very reasonable, $7 taxes in for fries, a hot dog or sausage, and a drink; I went with a sausage and water. There's the basics for condiments - ketchup, white and malt vinegars for the fries, mustard, onions, sauerkraut, pickles and banana peppers for your tube steak. There weren't many people ahead of me so my food came pretty quickly, and I plopped down on a library bench, ready to defend it against the aggressive birds that thicken their arteries off Bud's leftovers. Seriously, these must be the most heart attack-prone birds in the world. My plate certainly looked good, with what looked like a regular sized bag of their golden brown fries. It's nice to see that they either use the right potatoes or blanch them first, because they're not too dark like many hand-cut fries. The fries proved to be as good as they looked too, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I was worried that the fries at the bottom might get soggy from steaming in their own heat, so once I was done the sausage I spread them out, and that seemed to work. The sausage itself was fine, a nice snap from the casing and mild flavour made it inoffensive if still unimpressive. It was definitely a lot of food for seven bucks, if not the healthiest. This trip was all about the fries though, and Bud is definitely serving up some damn good spuds.

I popped over on a sunny afternoon after the lunch crowds had left, perusing the menu on the bright red truck. They have several chef-ed up hot dogs, including a kimchi dog and a pulled pork. They also have plain dogs and sausages, as well as vegetarian and gluten free options. I went with the breakfast-themed Wafflelicious - a bacon wrapped dog topped with toasted waffle bits, cheddar, bacon bits, and maple syrup. I made it a combo, which adds fries and a drink. I was quickly informed that they were out of slices of bacon, but they offered to add more of the bits. It was a short wait, and I soon had my impressively full box of food, with the hot mess of a hot dog on top of a large pile of fries. I added a squirt of garlic chili sauce from their selection of cool house-made sauces and was on my way to sit in front of the new library to get away from the hyper-aggressive birds that are around the old library. I started the endeavor to eat my hot dog by picking out the waffle bits and eating those. They were lightly toasted, but I would have preferred a Belgian-style waffle with deeper pockets. The dog itself was fine, but not as good as some locally-made dogs. I was glad that they use real bacon for their bacon bits, and I was probably better off that there wasn't a deep fried slice of bacon on my dog. All the sauces combined into a messy but delicious topping that hit all the right notes - sweetness from the maple syrup, spice and savouriness from the sriracha knock off, and some tang from the relish. There must have been a couple medium sized potatoes worth of fries in my box. Hand cut, they were decently crispy and I slowly enjoyed them as I people watched and took in the sun. While the CC truck has a corporate franchise feel instead of the more romantic ideal of some of their mom and pop mobile competition, they're putting out products that are worth a try and flesh out Halifax's food truck scene.

Temporarily Halifax's newest food truck until some others hit the scene this summer, Firefly Feast…read morehas set up shop on Gottingen directly across from the North End Memorial Library, in between the creeping gentrification south of Cunard and the infamy of Uniacke Square, to dole out sandwiches and baskets of its sure to be menu staple "firefries". After showing up just a little bit too late on their opening day, I popped back over on a lovely Friday afternoon. Firefly's fire engine red trailer is cozied up with some hanging plants, making their corner of the parking lot a homey one, if your home is on wheels and smells like a fryer. Their menu was compact, comprising of four sandwiches - a Monte Cristo with berry compote, jerk chicken with pineapple slaw, hoisin pulled pork, and a steak sandwich - and their firefries which are a mix of thin shoestring fries, sweet potato fries and crispy fried onions. You can get a combo with a sandwich, firefries and a drink for a respectable $12, taxes in. I went with a Monte Cristo combo, because who doesn't like what is effectively a ham and cheese between French toast? It was a short wait as things were pretty quiet towards the end of their business day, and soon I had a basket of firefries and one for my sandwich in hand(s). I went across the street to sit on a library bench since the gravel parking lot and grassy abandoned lot weren't particularly inviting. The fries were fantastic - all crisp and well seasoned with sea salt, and the rich, creamy aioli on the side was great for dipping. The Monte Cristo is typically a ham and cheese, dipped in egg wash and fried. Mine seemed to be ham-less, but the cheese was plentiful, and nicely melted and stringy. The egg wash added another layer of flavour and the strawberry and blueberry compote was sweet and delicious. It made the sandwich soggy and messy, but that's what napkins are for. If you're in the neighbourhood or even in the proximity, swing by for the firefries for sure. Myself, I'm looking forward to trying more of the menu and continuing to watch this area evolve.

They typically have 2-3 food trucks and I had already tried the others, so why not...I thought. First off...the selections of sandwiches were incredible. The flavor combinations and ingredient choices are obviously done by someone who really loves food and understands it. That is most definitely what I am looking for in any food service establishment. Then I tried the firefries, which are an upgrades version of normal food truck delicious fries...if you can imagine. Combining regular and sweet potato fries and with a delicious garlic-y dipping sauce...YES PLEASE! Their prices are completely reasonable and for what you get, it is definitely worth tracking them down!
