The woman working was the most high pressure store employee of e come across. Forget being able to just browse.

They have nice goods. The French woman who runs the place literally won't leave you to browse. There is no browsing, she picks up things and tells you about them while you're trying to shop. I have a feeling if I had stayed there any longer, she would have picked up each and every item in the store and brought it up to me, trying to get me to purchase. She hawked her wares in your face harder than they do at the Shoba Bazar in India. Thoroughly unpleasant experience, which is just too bad because the store has such nice things. Calm down, French lady-you're killing the vibe of the place. Prices are what you'd expect in the French Quarter, expensive but not outlandish. read more

Good selection, horrific customer service. My husband and I spent about $500-600 on table linens and two trivets. They were sold as trivets by the attendant (about $30 each). After using the trivets for their intended purpose a few times one randomly cracked from the heat, which is the whole purpose of the trivet. I figured since I had spent such a large amount I could call the store and get another shipped and I could ship back the damaged one for them to return to the manufacturer. There was a miscommunication with the sales attendant and I was led to believe that no problem, she had spoken to the shop owner and they would send one at no cost (I was going to buy 3 so they'd be shipping 4). A few days later the shop owner gets in touch with me was incredibly rude; throughout the entire conversation consistently cuts me off to tell me she's not sending a free one and that she's a small business owner and that'll put her under. My husband and I are also small business owners, we know the cost of things - she most likely paid $10-15 for 1 trivet. I was purchasing 3 more, I had already spent over $500. And as a small business owner I know that when you have a good relationship with your vendors when things like this happen more often than not they will warranty the items for you as a favor on occasion. If I sold an item that didn't perform the one task it was intended for I would take responsibility for said item and exchange it for a customer. Terrible business practices, spend your money elsewhere. read more

Great selection of household items all sourced from France. My first visit here was on a really wet September day, looking for absinthe glasses for a birthday present. I lived here at the time, and had scoured the Quarter antique shops for such a thing, only to discover that they could only be had at breathtakingly high prices. Like, really? kind of prices. The realization that what I wanted could only be had at a price that far exceeded my pocketbook led me to start thinking of looking for reproductions, a concept I once would have found odious, but what, considering this rather large discrepancy between what I wanted and what I might have, I was increasingly embracing. When I stumbled, drenched and disheartened, upon Gem de France, I was really happy. They have lovely absinthe glasses. And absinthe spoons, both which I purchased quickly and happily. My second visit to this shop was today. I remembered my good luck at finding it the first time, and went in looking for nothing in particular, but leaving, a half hour later, with some beautiful cloth napkins. The woman who owns this shop is enthusiastic and knowledgeable, so casual shoppers, you've been warned. When her sales tactics became too high pressure for my husband, who wanted to talk to me about our purchase without intrusion, he only had to say a word and she left us to work out our negotiations alone. Royal Street is not to be missed. Gem de France is an authentic and fun boutique on Royal Street, making it a worthy stop on your walk around the French Quarter. The shopkeeper has a lovely French accent and is very welcoming. They sell unique home decor and gifts (soaps, lotions, fragrances) that are reasonably priced and smile-inducing. read more

I am of two minds about this store: on the one hand they have some truly lovely things: great selection of soaps and colognes; beautiful tablecloths; Little Prince dishes, etc. On the other hand the woman who works there, Sonya, drives me crazy. She will follow you around the store and if you pause in front of an object she'll give you a 10 minute spiel about it and she is aggressive about hawking those French tablecloths. When I've bought stuff there (and I HAVE because they make wonderful gifts) it's been when Sonya's not around. read more

I visited New Orleans a few months ago on business and wandered into this charming shop while out for a walk in the French Quarter. The owner was welcoming and helpful. I regretted being so rusty in my French conversation skills. I purchased a few soaps and a beautiful tablecloth, which was shipped to my home to avoid having to fit it into my carry-on luggage. Sometimes you discover a little gem of a store that feels comfortable, is interesting to explore, and is small enough to not be overwhelmed by the merchandise. This is just such a store. The owner is very rude!!! I was about to make a purchase, trying to decide between two sets of table cloths with napkins; I was already looking at them (her employee had unfolded them and laid them out for me to see), then she barged in with other customers and practically pushed me out of the way. And then she had the nerve to tell me that I was rude! Her employee was very embarrassed and very apologetic. She was even rude and pushy with her employee. They are what I call Eager and kind wanting to have customers that purchase items...because it's a BUSINESS...in order to stay open people must purchase. We were wandering the French Quarter and found this cute little shop. The owner was very sweet and helpful. but the older lady with short hair who works with her is horrible. I asked her a question about a print I wanted to buy, she was very rude and took the print and put it back on the shelf. I had to go back and take the print off the shelf (I really loved the print even though it was pricey) and then went to the other lady (who was the owner) to pay for it. If the owner was not there to help me, I would have never bought anything and I would have walked out of the store. read more

While of vacation in New Orleans, we happened on this wonderful store, the cat plates in the window drew us in. We already owned knives by Laguiole and here in front of us was the rest of the dinner set. The remaining items, forks and spoons in both sizes were purchased and were shipped by the store. I was in New Orleans very recently and visited this lovely little shop. It's full of all sorts of French items for the home. And there's even a very eager French woman working there who is hustling to sell you something. This French woman asked me where I'm from and if I was looking for anything in particular. She asked that to every customer she helped. In hindsight, I wonder if she asks where people are from, so she can gauge if they know any French. I didn't tell her about my love for France, nor that I know quite a bit of French. Anyhow, I told her I would love to find something small to put under my glass vase when it sits on top of my small glass dining table (pretty specific, huh), so she showed me her tablecloths - some of which were her own designs. And like Yelper Janet C. said, she sure was aggressive about hawking them. I didn't love any of the tablecloths or napkins that she showed me enough to buy them, so I politely told her I would have to think about it. In English, she politely accepted my answer. And then, in a pleasant tone of voice, I heard her say, "trou du cul," as she folded her tablecloths in front of me. My brain nearly malfunctioned. I knew I had learned that French term before, but I had to make sure my thought was correct. I looked it up on my phone, and sure enough, it was! This French woman had called me an @$$hole in a sweet tone of voice! I should have said something to her right there, but instead I walked out of the store in disbelief. Specifically stopped at this store on my way back to Texas from Florida. I had shopped here 1 1/2 yrs ago & wanted something special for friends. The owners were very helpful with suggestions & I ended up buying a gift for this year's Christmas for my daughter. I am a local and I agree with other reviews in that the shop is charming and the linens are beautiful. However, buyer beware, the linens are very expensive and do not live up to the claims of the owner, Sonya. Not only do they not live up to their claims, she will not back her product. As a result, I now have a tablecloth that I spent $300.00 on that was destroyed in the wash. This was a red tablecloth with cream print trim. I washed it exactly as her very specific instructions indicated. However, apparently, the red fabric was not treated and bled onto the cream fabric making it pink. As I said I am a local and had to make two trips to the Quarter, paying for expensive parking, to no avail. Sonya was not there on either occasion and her staff was only told to give me a demonstration. Sonya told them not to exchange it and not to return my money. I have also purchased other tablecloths that did not wash as I was told they would. The so called treated tablecloths do not withstand the normal ware of a tablecloth, but I did not pay as much for this cloth and thought this would be normal. I think to pay this much money for her tablecloths and for her to not stand behind her product is truly bad business. So it would be my recommendation that, if you feel you must buy something from her charming little shop, stick to the postcards. read more
