I have been a customer of Gem Jewelry in West Hartford for over 20yrs. This past year there was a change in management and personnel. I visited the store in September and found the service very disappointing. My visit last was over two hours due to the sales associate jumping from me to other customers. At the end of my visit I was told that I would receive an email of the proposed item of purchase the following Monday. I had not heard back so I called and I was informed that she was busy and would get me my quote that day. When had not heard back in 2 days, I called back again. I was told that they are understaffed and she was overwhelmed. She completed another inquiry and would be working on my order. I was told that she would send me the information that night. There was a timeline for the item as it was a gift I expressed my frustration with the delays and my concerns and the associate abruptly hung up. I did not receive the quote as promised again. I have been a past customer here for many purchases and never experienced such poor service. They are not attentive to the customer and do not follow through with a commitment. My husband and I used Gem Jewelry for purchases since the 1990's. This weekend, I ended that relationship after a horrible experience with my engagement/wedding band set. I had a prong break off my engagement ring in Dec 2022 and I brought my ring (from out of state) to be repaired. First they tried repairing just the one prong, (which broke after one week), and then I paid for Gem Jewelry to reset the solitaire with a new head. That head lasted 7 months before another prong broke. I was told by Michael that it was my fault, it would be yet another $260 for a new head. I traveled again out of state to get to CT, thinking that I had a relationship with this store. I asked if they could lower the solitaire setting to match what I had originally because the new head sat significantly higher than my original setting. Michael was visibly annoyed that I was "creating work" by making this request. He said he wasn't confident he could find something but he would try. I picked up my repaired ring this weekend and I am completely dissatisfied. The solitaire diamond now lays flat on my finger, not raised in the slightest, not allowing any light in. It is most definitely NOT what I requested, and I am now searching for a new family jeweler who listens to his customers. Spend your money elsewhere and find a jeweler who is willing to listen to the customer. read more

I don't know where to begin! Mike, the manager of GEM Jewelry in West Hartford is an extremely professional and empathic individual, who assisted me in both replacing links for my Tag Heuer watch which was at least 25-30 years of age, but also cleaned and replaced a battery for the watch. This watch holds an extremely sentimental value to me, and Mike was extremely gracious and eloquent in the way he spoke with me and assisted me in making these reparations. When I asked him what the bill was for replacing the links, he smiled and said $10. When I asked him what the cost was for replacing the battery, he said no charge. I've never had a jeweler treat me SO NICELY, without making an extensive purchase! This shows me the character of this establishment, and can't tell you how much I recommend doing business with them in any future jewelry repair needs and purchases! They treated me the way I like to be treated, without forcing me to look at a new watch to replace my current timepiece. She has gone into Gem Jewelry twice within a year and a half for jewelry repairs, and both times the staff went above and beyond. In the past, she has come across certain businesses taking advantage of her because of her age, however, the staff at Gem Jewelry could not have treated her better, or been more kind. This is a great local jeweler for fine jewelry, as well as services. I came in with a watch that was missing a battery. They replaced it for me, and when I tried to pay, they said it was free and they wanted to be my jeweler. That really stood out to me. I don't buy much jewelry, but I have since returned to have items engraved, which turned out wonderfully. I have also inquired about pearl re-stringing, which they offer. I am writing to convey my deep disappointment with the complete lack of customer service I experienced today at this location of Gem Jewelry. I stopped by the store with my nephew to simply have his new watch sized before the holiday. Considering the season, I fully anticipated waiting, and I certainly anticipated paying for the service. After patiently waiting while watching the overwhelmed and flummoxed staff attempt to help others, we were finally addressed. The staff member then curtly and dismissively stated that there was nothing they could do for us until at least next year since the watch technician was fully committed. He offered no other solution, so we left discouraged. However, on the way home I stopped at another jeweler in Farmington and not only was I promptly and graciously helped but the adjustment was made for free--all with holiday cheer, in just a few minutes! This is the customer service I had hoped for! I shall certainly continue to patronize and recommend the jeweler in Farmington without ever considering this or any other Gem location again. read more

I am absolutely appalled by the horrendous experience in your New Britain Avenue location. Where do I begin.. - The man "assisting" me walked away from me 3 times to answer his cell phone - He was COMPLETELY unconcerned with what I wanted for a wedding band. When I showed him an inspiration photo, he told me it would look "terrible" and that I would "never" be able to find it.. Very bizarre considering several other jewelers told me they could easily replicate the gorgeous design. - I can completely appreciate an expert in the field giving me an educated option.. but what bothered me about this man was his unbelievably nasty attitude. It seemed like he made it a point to cut me off, and argue with everything I said. He even went as far as to tell me he "knew" where my engagement ring was from, when we purchased it from my family jeweler in Massachusetts.. I had been to multiple places to look for a replacement wedding band that I lost. This was the first place I didnt feel like I was being 'sold' something. The woman helping us was wonderfully nice and the man jumped in a few times and helped us. It was over the busy holiday and I was flexible with my pick up times, but they insisted they could get it to us quickly ( goldsmith on site) My aunt was a jeweler and I know how this business works ( sadly shes out of the business now) This place I would go back to. My husband and I had a few services done at Gem Jewelry in West Hartford right around the time of our wedding, and were overall quite pleased with the experience. We had a white gold ring replated with rhodium- it looked brand new when we got it back, and it cost less than I expected (I was quoted a higher price at a different jewelry store previously). My husband also had his wedding ring resized. It was a two color band with hammered detailing, and they were concerned about leaving a "seam" where they had to removed material from the ring. When we received it afterward, there was no seam visible, and it looked better than it did when we brought it in. Finally, we had my engagement and wedding band soldered together. The e-ring is a solitaire with channel set stones, and the w-band also has channel set stones. When I got the ring back, the soldering looked great, but the stones in the e-ring and w-band were not aligned correctly. They let me send it back (at no charge) to have it corrected. When I got it back the second time, the alignment was much better. Although I think it is still (very very slightly) out of alignment, I took it anyway. Nobody has noticed it (some even after I point it out and they look closely at it), so I don't let it bother me. If you go to the West Hartford location, I would suggest talking to anybody but the man with curly hair and glasses. Although he is very nice, we got a lot of misinformation from him and would have had a much better experience working with someone else. For example, he initially suggested adding metal "bumpers" to the inside of my husband's ring rather than resizing it the proper way because, according to him, they couldn't do it without leaving a seam. We spent $75 doing it the way he suggested, and ended up resizing it the proper way (at an additional cost, I may add) because the ring still did not fit comfortably after doing it the first time. Of course, there was no visible seam when they were finished with it, so we shouldn't have even been told to go the other route in the first place. He also told me there was absolutely no way my ring was going to be ready by the time his coworker told me it would be, and it was, in fact, ready when she said it would be. He also disagreed with me when I told him I my rings weren't aligned properly and told me that nobody would notice. I would highly recommend Gem Jewelry for any jewelry repair (unless you are very particular and the repair involves having something aligned perfectly and soldered- if you aren't too picky, they will do an acceptable job). We were very happy with the quality of the work, the price was fair, and the customer service was just fine aside from the problems I described above. We will definitely use Gem Jewelry in the future. read more
