Once I was buzzed in I was greeted and welcomed by Ray. He gave me his undivided attention in helping me find some pieces of jewelry that I had been looking for. I came here to Gem Pawnbrokers located on 40th and 8th Ave in Manhattan on a whim. I had a bunch of items for sale as I was clearing out stuff not only from my apartment, but from my aunt's place as well...sort of a winter "spring cleaning". Although this Gem Pawnbrokers is mostly known for their jewelry business, I had a ton of eclectic items for which I was looking to unload. Luis was the customer service representative who assisted me with my belongings. Getting straight to the point...Luis was terrific! I wouldn't necessarily say I was in a bind...but Luis and the owner/manager genuinely inspected my possessions, researched the values online and honestly presented me with whether they were worth anything. So...I appreciated that. Unlike what most pawn brokers do...they didn't just look at my assets and say...."not interested". I had everything from electronics, dishes, plates, suitcase, leather coats...(yes I brought a giant cart inside the store with me, lol). Luis went into his system and started plugging away with what seemed like him having my best interests at heart. Ultimately, I was able to sell an AudioSource - Soundbar with Sonic Emotion 3D Sound....which Luis offered me a fair price for. All I then had to do was present my identification and fill out some paperwork. Overall, the exchange process took about 20 minutes but it was very worthwhile as it afforded me a chance to speak with Luis and sort of "pick his brain" about the pawn business in general and what particulars to look out for in the future. I was pleased I was able to do business with this Gem Pawnbrokers here in midtown on the west side. Luis was a real down to earth person assisting me with the variety of stuff I had. In the future I would happily return to Gem Pawnbrokers and certainly recommend them. I'm mentioning this with sincerity...in that I felt like I could trust the employees here (well, Luis specifically...with his counter setup located on the right hand side of the store as you walk in). One of the pearls fell out of one of my rings. I took it these people and they stole the remaining real pearl and replaced it with 2 imitation pearls. They would not return the actual real pearl that was removed claiming it was never removed but I have the matching necklace and earrings and they are no longer matching due to this sneak thievery. read more
