This review concerns Albert. A. Jonah. This person took an eleven thousand dollar Rolex watch from my daughter and gave her $5000 in cash without a receipt. My daughter was not aware that she was supposed to receive a physical receipt. She is a disabled vet with PTSD. in text messages with Albert he agreed to sell her back her watch for escalating values. My daughter understood the transaction to be a loan against the value of the watch. Despite repeated requests for receipts, Albert talks in circles and refuses to provide what my daughter and I have requested. We will be taking him to small claims court at the minimum and report him to any regulatory authority to which he answers to. I will update this review as the situation progresses. I went in tasked to sell some things for a friend. I think I sat with Albert, who tried to pull a fast one on me at every chance he got. Firstly, he straight out lamented the cost of gold going down and kept quoting some bs rate for 18 K gold saying it was 40 something when one could easily look up the cost online and see it was 60 something. When I tried to refute that by trying to look up the cost on my phone, it was extremely sus that I couldn't for my life access the internet in his office on my phone. Cell phone jammer maybe? He then tried to tell me that the bracelet I was getting appraised was only 18K gold and only the pure gold in (a percentage) was worth the 60 something price. That was an outright lie. I pushed back and he finally admitted "Bro, I gotta make money on the sale of this too." So basically, he admitted that the rate was 40 something that he made up. I took my silverware set to them in late January and they gave me a fair offer of $1452 right off the bat. I said I wanted to show it around. Mr. Johah didn't pressure me to sell right away. A few days later I I brought it to Global Gold and Silver and the offer was $1020, even though the guy their added some drink stirrers to the set to be purchased (I had thought they weren't silver but they told me they were). I also showed them a 14K gold pocket watch. Their initial offer was $280. When I indicated I wasn't happy with the offer, the man said he'd bring in his boss to see if he could do better than the total $1300 offer. The boss came in and looked at it and said he could do $1700. I said thank you but I was just interested in what people were offering at the moment. He then started trying to cajole me into selling right then. He insulted me by saying I wasn't seriously interested in selling (I had left work early that day and biked all the way up from the Staten Island ferry to their place on 45th Street). Finally, he offered me $2000 for the set. I told him he could offer me $10,000 but that I wouldn't take the offer at that point. The $2,000 offer was generous but the man rubbed me the wrong way. They clearly take advantage of people who don't know better and accept their first offer. In mid-February I brought the set and the watch to Truval on 47th St. Again the offer went upward as I resisted. But the initial offer on the set was more reasonable and he had little experience with the pocketwatch, so the increase was more understandable. Their best offer was $1800. I sold the set for $1904, with $1500 of that for the silverware set today to Manhattan Buyers. The offer for the set went up compared to their offer in late January even though the price of silver has declined a bit since then. This is probably because of the addition of the stirrers. The buyer, Mr. Jonah, is a polite man who gives you a strong offer right off the bat. He is willing to pay in either check or cash. If you want to deal with negotiating higher prices, you can try some other places. You may or may not succeed. I know I'd recommend Manhattan Buyers to anyone selling gold or silver. read more

I walked into Manhattan Buyers recently to sell a lovely vintage mid 1960s Rolex timepiece. It was in very good condition and though I had overpaid for it originally, I had a good idea of what it sells for on the market. I was checking my options to see what's the fastest and easiest way to convert it into cash. I found the location easily enough and was asked to wait until they could see me. About five minutes later I was invited in by one of the gentlemen. The folks here were very nice and polite. The gentleman looked at my watch while making small talk. He made some observations about the watch, some of which made me think that he didn't believe I was very well informed, like making a point of noting the plastic crystal on the watch. Plastic/Acrylic was used on Rolex watches of that era until they first starting using sapphire crystal in the early 1970s with the # 5100, # 1530, # 1630, and #1831. They didn't get around to using sapphire exclusively until the late 1980s. This type of stuff was a turnoff as I think he figured I was ignorant about watches and he offered me $ 800 cash for it. I declined, and about three minutes later he increased his offer by 50%, to $ 1200. We were getting closer to a fair price, but this was a further turnoff to me. There was such a large disparity in the offer, all within five minutes of walking in. I politely declined again, saying the watch could at least have a good trade value with another collector, and I might go that route. He was interested and asked what I was looking for, and I mentioned a watch by model number. He looked it up and gave me good advice on the price, but he didn't have any in stock. I thanked him and left. I was treated politely and fairly well, and was given very good advice on a fair price for the watch I was seeking, but I had already taken a couple of bids on the watch I was selling and they were both over $1200. I ultimately sold the timepiece directly to another collector for $ 2300. I passed on Manhattan Buyers, but I might return for a purchase if they have exactly what I am looking for at a good price. read more

So, I definitely had my hopes up at this place and getting the value I wanted for my rollie. Meeting Arthur was also a good experience. He was very professional and knowledgable in his respectable field. He even taught me some things about the watch I had and explained to me about different merchandise he has in the store. I appreciated his approach because he took his time to talk to me and let me explain to him that I wanted to sell this watch because I wanted to use the money to get a wedding ring for my girl. Their website lets you believe that the company is well established and doing honest business. I made an appointment and met a king-of-the-road kind of guy named Arthur. I showed him a gold bracelet I wanted to sell. He looked at it with a very unsatisfied face. He started to tell me about all the doubts he had about the authenticity of the gold the bracelet was made of. He suspected that it wasn't solid gold, that he had to break the bracelet to find out if a steel coil inside the bracelet made it feel so heavy. Of course the whole speech was to justify the very low price he was offering me. I took back my bracelet and went around the corner to show it to 3 different shops. The offers I got were way higher that the one Manhattan Buyers gave me. None of these shops discussed the authenticity of the plain gold. They tested it and gave me a much better offer. I sold the bracelet to the third shop that was willing to pay the price I wanted.
