This is a lovely winery. They have multiple seating areas, upstairs and downstairs. You can sit inside or outside. They also had downstairs rooms for tasting as well. The staff is fantastic, very friendly and engaging. There is a limited menu with availability based on events and whether.food trucks are onsite. The vineyard is lovely and the grounds seem extensive with a lot going on. They had a large variety of wines ranging from white, rose, red, sparkling and port. What a sweet diamond in the middle of a cornfield! Went there last night to meet friends for the very first time and it was above exceptional! The wines are so good and the atmosphere is so cozy. They had music last night and it was like being in Nashville! I highly recommend this. They have rooms to rent houses to rent and just gorgeous fields and landscape. They have a food truck on the weekends and it's just as a perfect place to meet up and to spend your next weekend. Cheers y'all. read more

Stayed at the Manor House at General's Ridge Winery for a family wedding in Hague. 3 bedrooms / 2 baths. Quiet, comfortable, affordable house. A bottle of wine awaited us. We also visited the winery and tasted all the delicious wines at General's. Highly recommend. read more

This has to be one of my top wineries in the area if not my number 1 winery. The owner and his wife are so friendly and nice and they make it a point to mingle with all their customers. Very professional owners and the staff is so nice. They also own 2 homes on the property that you can rent out. They're cheaper then most hotels which is crazy. The 2 homes are situated on their property and you'll see them on the way in to the tasting room. The highlight of my tasting was the sparkling wine. It's almost like a champagne but it's made in VA so it can't be called champagne and the best part is... you don't get headaches the next day from drinking too much of it. WINNING! The merlot was also very good. If you're ever wine tasting in the area be sure to come here and I promise you, you won't be disappointed. read more

General's Ridge (named in honor of its retired 2-Star Marine Corps owner) is one of the larger vineyards in the area. The tasting room isn't fancy-smancy, but if you're a day tripper to the Northern Neck you shouldn't care. They also jokingly call themselves a B&B, except it's a "Bottle & Breakfast", since they give you wine instead of feeding you breakfast! Their 33 acres has a wide assortment of varietals, although they only produce maybe 2500 cases/year. The rest goes to any number of other vineyards. So if you're drinking a nice Pinot Grigio somewhere, ask where the grapes came from, because they may well come from here. Mike Shaps is their wine maker, which is a point in their favor. They are also 100% estate, so two points in their favor. Almost all the reds here (and generally in this area) trended towards light bodied, aided & abetted by the use of neutral French Oak barrels. While that isn't my preference, I didn't mind it. What I tried: GRV While (Traminette): One of the few Traminettes I've seen east of the Shenandoah. I like this grape so no complaints here. 2015 Viognier: OK 2015 Petit Manseng: Pretty nice; I was tempted to get a glass except it was late in the day. Made in a dry style (the way I like it). Sparkling Semper Fi (Chardonnay sparkling): I generally don't drink sparklings but I think theirs was good. GRV Rose: Strawberry notes, but not overly sweet General's Nightcap: Desert wine, too sweet for me GRV Red Blend (Merlot, Cab Franc, Chambourcin): Light, fruity, and their suggestion it be served chilled sounds good. A red for white drinkers. 2013 Merlot: Also light, and has the capacity to be served chilled 2013 Cab Franc: Yet another light red, and unusual in that it didn't have the distinctive pepperiness of other Virginia Cab Francs  2014 Petit Verdot: This one did have some pepperiness, but I'd say was still on the light side Generals Last Call port style: Made with Chambourcin & brandy. I liked it, but I have plenty of ports at home so I deferred on a bottle. read more

The wine flight consists of six options - your choice - for $14. Long pours in tasting glasses. The cab franc was, to my mind, their best. My girlfriend and I stumbled upon this place while we were vacationing on the Northern Neck some time ago. We're from upstate New York, and as such, we are quite accustomed to the Finger Lakes wineries and the pomp and circumstance that goes with visiting a winery. All of that was thrown to the wind with a visit to General's Ridge. The wines were all tasty, but what stood out to us was the demeanor of the vineyard owner. He welcomed us in and chatted freely while we drank--about everything from baseball to his ex-wife--and when we had finished, he packaged up both of our wine glasses and sent on our way with a hearty goodbye. We still use those glasses to this day and remember the winery fondly. My girlfriend still likes to remind me of what the owner said to me upon refusing the red wine samples: "In the navy we have a term for men like you . . . we say that he wasn't all he could be.' This is a relatively new spot in the Northern Neck peninsula of Virginia. They instantly get three and a half stars for their warm greeting. It went something like this: "Welcome! We're pickin' Pinot Noir today. Come on in. Get out of the smoke!" Pinot Noir: I sort of expect this at the higher altitude wineries in western Virginia, but not in the heart of the Northern Neck. It is spicy and has a kick. Not sure if Miles would approve. Now the smoke: the Great Dismal Swamp was on fire last weekend and damn near most if not all of the Virginia coast was coated in smoke. We followed orders and tasted some very good wines (that Pinot was interesting but not exactly what I would expect from a Pinot Noir) at a tasting bar that had a doorknob in the middle of it. The bar was made from the scraps of an old barn. Welcome to rural Virginia. Of the whites, I preferred the Viognier the most and the Westmoreland Red (a blend) was my favorite red. They have a large events room connected to the tasting room and the wood still smells new. Dense forest all around. I think they have big plans for this place. And rightly so - it's in the middle of what is called the Chesapeake Bay wine trail. If you visit the more well-known Ingleside Winery, drive another 40 miles south and visit General's Ridge. It's well worth the trip. read more

Boy, am I glad we "accidentally" found General's Ridge Vineyard! It was on a whim that my friends and I decided to take a leisurely drive on a beautiful but slightly chilly Sunday afternoon through the Northern Neck. We really had no intention or plan other than we circled two wineries in the area, and should we stumble upon them, we would stop in for a tasting. Our first choice was closed, so we decided to back-track and wound up spending an amazing two+ hours chatting and tasting their delicious wines (seriously, I liked all of them, and usually my palate is more picky), served with a smile, peppered with sly wit, from our lovely sommelier (and if you're reading this review, my apologies for forgetting your name) -- a tall, blonde who was extremely knowledgeable about the wines, their notes, pairings, etc. We chose to share a bottle of the Cab Franc on the sunny patio, paired with the spinach and artichoke dip. Both were delicious. We decided to purchase three bottles (the Cab Franc, the Rose, and the Merlot which was on special), joined the wine club, and went on our merry way, as unfortunately for us the closing hour was fast-approaching. As for the vineyard itself, it's quite beautiful. The main manor is available for rentals for special events, as is the condo above the carriage house. While the actual tasting room is tastefully decorated, it's not over the top as many of them are. Being a new member of the wine club at General's Ridge, I look forward to the many private events and parties, and I cannot wait to come back! Cheers! :) read more

My fiance and I visited the vineyard while staying at The Inn at Montross. The wine was reasonably priced and great to taste. We purchased a couple of bottles to enjoy that weekend. We also lucked out and were able to chat with the owners while staying at the Inn. Very interesting individuals and great to meet the owners behind the operation! A great place to stop when visiting the Northern Neck and doing some vineyard hopping. read more

We often stop at the Virginia wineries in our way home to Maryland. My family lives in the Northern Neck and I've been visiting my family for 52 years. Can't pass up the prettiest winery in the trip home. So glad we stopped in. Wonderful young ladies behind the wine bar pouring the tastings. We left before the music started and hope we catch the music next time. Our favorite was the Cabernet franc. Delicious. I'll share pictures too. I have to bring my dad next time. As a Marine, imagine my dad would enjoy meeting the owner who is also a Marine. Beautiful land and simply gorgeous location. read more

We stopped at this vineyard once we discovered the Chesapeake Wine Trail. The vineyard itself is very picturesque and even has a B&B on premises - that's short for Bed & Bottle. The wine tasting here is a little more expensive $10 per person but you get to taste quite a few wines. It looks like they have several award winning wines. Unfortunately, most of the ones I tasted just didn't have much substance in my view. Maybe they are better with food? On the fence about it. read more

I just returned from GRVW this past weekend and all I have to say is Wow! What a great place to get away from the daily DC/Balto commute. If you're driving down from the DC/Balto area I highly recommend taking 301 across the Potomac rather than going down I-95. Some GPS will leave you a little short on reaching the actual destination. A local map/atlas will come in handy. The directions are also spot-on at the website. Once you arrive, you will encounter endless grape vines. Truly awesome. We stayed at the Vineyard Views which is an upstairs modern flat (kitchen, dining, bedroom, 2BA and plently of sitting areas. The balcony overlooks the vineyard (hence the name) and you are truly taken back at the scene). We were lucky to have a great weekend and was able to tour several vineyards throughout the area. Tasting room is excellent and the owners Rick and Linda are the most charming folks you will ever meet in the area and if you're there for an overnight stay, they will make sure you are well acquainted with all of the local places to go for dining and just about whatever you're looking for in the area. They present some very, Very, VERY good wine. Again, perfect place to just get away for a romantic weekend, retreat or just a step back in time. Generals Ridge Tasting Room just opened a month ago. For a brand new winery they are presenting wonderful wines! The wines are all medium bodied and very versatile! Anyone coming in for a taste would find at least one or two of the wines exceptional, if not all of them! The General has actually been growing and selling fruit to many Virginia wineries and winemakers for over 10 years. Chances are that if you have been to other wineries in Virginia you have tasted wine that was made with fruit that came from this property. The venue is wonderful; very peaceful and classy. The atmosphere is very inviting and begs to be enjoyed much longer than just during a tasting. They offer food; which most wineries in the area do not. This is a plus! They are also open on Friday evening's until 7:00; perfect to meet friends after work for a glass or bottle of wine and share some appetizers! They also have two rentals on the property for lodging and entertaining. The Manor House is a renovated 1800s plantation home that has 3 bedrooms and sleeps six with a full kitchen and wonderful balcony that overlooks the vineyard - BEAUTIFUL! The Carriage House is great for large dinner parties or possibly a reception or Rehearsal dinner. The upstairs, Vineyard Views offers sleeping for a family. It would be perfect for a ladies weekend away or a book club! They have a wonderful enclosed deck (Vines Room) that is great for sitting and enjoying the delicious food and wine with friends. It is still under construction, however, they plan to have it totally completed by the end of May. It is definitely worth the drive to check this welcome new winery out! I would have given 5 stars, but I was once told that to give 5 stars to anything means there is no room for improvement, and I don't care who you are, or what you offer; there is always room for at least an ounce of improvement somewhere! I will say, this vineyard/winery is one that you will want to keep coming back too and remain a part of its evolution! read more

I wish I could share in all the positive experiences that everyone else had. My husband and I live down the road from this vineyard, and were hoping to have the welcoming experience that we have so come to love from the Northern Neck. When we walked in, were greeting by a surly women who informed us that the tasting room was probably closed, but they could possibly squeeze us in. I was completely taken aback by her attitude since my husband called prior to us leaving the house to make sure it would be ok for us to come in (they close at 6 and we arrived at 5:30, which is why we called to make sure they were ok for us to come by). The surly lady directed us to the tasting room, we were again treated with the same rudeness by the manager. I have no problem being told that we were there too late, since it was a last minute idea on our part. However, if you are going to confirm on the phone that you are open and taking people, and then be rude when we show up like we are inconveniencing you, it's very off putting. Needless to say I will never go to this vineyard again, despite it being 9 minutes from my house. I have never been so put off by attitudes in my life. read more
