This is officially the first record store that I have visited in NYC, and perhaps the first business I have visited with the specific intention of vinyl hunting, since I heretofore found my records on the street, in friends' parents' garages, in sketchy co-op basements in Berkeley, and dusty bins of suburban charity stores. I frequented music meccas like Amoeba and Rasputin's, but it being the early 2000s, it was all about CDs and non-HD DVDs. My reasons for targeting this place place were the Yelp mentions of a 90s/high school vibe. This place did remind me not of high school itself (because that would have been fucking boring), but of the times during which I attended high school. The approach from SoHo was the perfect way to celebrate the shocking extension of natural light afforded by daylight savings today. As I got closer to the West 4th area, I was blindsided by sudden memories of school trips when they let us loose in this infinite kingdom of grooviness, where there were vintage clothes, rings, posters, incense burners, and compact discs that we could never hope to find in Boston, let alone our hometown. This was also the place where I had my first half pound (as opposed to third or quarter pound) cheeseburger at a place called McDougal's (long since closed) and consciously realized for the first time that I loved burgers. A Keith Haring mural was the last throwback before I entered Generation Records. Yes. Totally '90s, but not in terms of Nirvana memorabilia, but in lack of advertising and a guy with LONG HAIR in the basement where all the used LPs were. On my way down to the basement, I had an overwhelming sense of deja vu from a composite memory or a dream. I knew when I saw all the shelves that I would make myself sick flipping past each and every album. I would rate a good selection by its LACK of Linda Rondstadt, Melissa Manchester, Barbara Streisand, Dean Martin, and Man of La Mancha, and Generation had very little of these common and annoying elements.The 2 for 99 cent sale shelves above the unpriced "not for sale, DO NOT TOUCH" shelves that some rifled through anyway was crap - random singles, the above mentioned aural weeds, and a few classical collections, but nothing you'd pay for. The repertoire lacked Hip Hop and World Music entirely but had Reggae, R&B, and Jazz sections, at least. Each record was encased in a plastic sleeve, which I first viewed as wasteful but gratefully reused later to protect my shabbier treasures at home. Some artists had their own category, but you knew ahead of time that nothing would be there (i.e. Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, Talking Heads, and Nico obviously had only new pressings in their slots). The guy with long hair was actually really nice, and didn't mind when I sneezed repeatedly and urgently asked for tissues. He said that it was fine to take my armloads of finds upstairs to view the New Arrivals section. There was some great stuff here; records by The Police priced only slightly higher than what would annoy me at a thrift shop ($2.99 to $5.99). There was pretty much everything by Tom Tom Club except their eponymous album; the one I wanted. Will have to resort to eBay for that. Stuff I was relieved I had inherited or found for free long ago: Elton John, Neil Young, Journey, Mr. Mister, Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac Things I had the compulsion to buy for no good reason: *Empire Records Poster *Random Emmylou Harris albums I'd never heard yet *Great White, just for its iconic art *A damaged Roy Orbison *An organ collaboration titled "ORGANASM" Stuff I had every reason to buy, but resisted with all my might: *A new press of Under the Great White Lights by the White Stripes *A new press of Grace by Jeff Buckley *$9.99 used Indigo Girls *Used copy of Jimmy Buffett's Son of a Son of a Sailor *Used mint of Janet Jackon's Rhythm Nation When it was time to shave down my selections, I started talking out loud, and the two guys at the desk, rather than sneering and turning away, offered gentle guidance (i.e. "You might not HAVE to have the Dirty Dancing soundtrack...Rick Springfield will still be here if you change your mind..."). One of them had the quirky quippiness and reddish beard of Zack Galifianakis but was in no way hideous, ugly strange, or inappropriate. He mentioned Watership Down when I said that the Velveteen Rabbit was the most depressing work of children's literature in existence. Touche. My loot after some angst and $43 and change later: *Elvis album with MY faves on it *2 albums by The Police *2 albums by Men At Work *Soundtrack to a PBS production of the Velveteen Rabbit narrated by Meryl Streep, accompanied by George Winston *Something RANDOM called "The Pet Clams" that I could NOT resist *A mint issue of Marvin Gaye (the one with SEXUAL HEALING on it) *Joe Walsh (with Turn to Stone) An average of $5 a pop is something I can live with. I deeply regret not getting Dirty Dancing, though. Could've been the time of my life. read more

It's hard to find a decent record store nowadays, even in new york. But this place is better than most (not to say it's that great though). They've got a decent selection of records, but nothing obscure or rare really which is kind of a let down. The prices are a little high, especially for the 12"s, you can usually find better prices elsewhere - or online, but for what it is, it's not too bad of a shop. I found some decent hardcore punk 7"s there, from current bands. They're all records that can be found online but it's much nicer to go and check them out in person. As far as old stuff, for my taste at least, they don't have that much. They've got the classics but not much else. read more

I first started going to Generation Records during my early college years (Rocket from the Crypt, Bad Religion, check). Earlier this month, after something of a break, I decided to go back and look for some records by Lungfish (is every decent record released before 1995 out of print?). The record I was looking for wasn't available, but just about everything else was--if only at prices that were higher than I last remembered them. Sadly, this most recent trip will be my last, as one of the friendlier saleswomen on staff spewed a racist joke over the speaker system while I was downstairs, sorting through seven-inch records. While this behavior speaks to a single individual and not the store, I cannot, in good conscience, support such vitriol (especially when it's directed at folks like me). Its a solid place to get used cds from music genres that I tend to listen to more, although I really enjoy lots of music from all different schools of thought. Its a good way to spend some time browsing through punk/hardcore/indierock/metal music. they have a fairly large t-shirt collection, although too many items of certain bands and I agree, its way too overpriced. This was one of the first record stores I found when I got down here back in college, and I still go there every once in a while. Oh don't go drunk. Because.....there's stairs. Meh, just a so-so record store. I was expecting to be blown away by a record store in NYC, but this place has little selection with big prices. No gems to be found here. If it's cool factor you're after and that makes you feel better about spending your money, then this is the place for you. The staff definitely believes they're far cooler than you'll ever be and they'll go out of their way to make you feel that way. The sad thing is that Halifax, Canada has far better record stores. Select Sounds in Bedford, for instance, blows Generation away! Much better selection, great prices and the owner knows everything possible about music. At Generation, I get the feeling they don't really know much so they focus more on tattoos and rock-chic dress code. Not sure where you should go in NYC if you're looking a good selection of Vinyl, but Generation is a waste of time. read more

After finding absolutely nothing to my fancy in the vinyl section of Kim's, my friends suggested we should head over to Generation Records. I could of easily spent $200.00 downstairs. There's an excellent collection of new and used vinyl that is still haunting me. Don't worry, I will be back with a wad of cash. Selection is unparalleled...if you're into metal, hardcore, punk, doom, space rock, etc. Used CD section is bigger than the new CD section. A lot of good stuff there. Found some old Coalesce and some other good stuff. People complain about prices for a CD, but think about it, most people don't consume their music that way anymore. They have to pay the rent, y'know. I'm in favor of keeping them there as long as possible. Take my money. read more

Generation has probably the best selection of metal (or "extreme") music, on CD, in town. If they don't have something in stock they'll order it for you and it won't be expensive; they also have a good selection of used stuff and shirts in the basement. The only part that is weak is that there used to be a lot of metalheads working there, now there are just skinny kids that dress like metalheads and chicks that dress scene. Both camps generally know nothing about music. Years back I could have a good conversation with the staff at Generation, now I just go in and buy the music... but that's what a record store is for so it doesn't affect my rating. I haven't been to this place since my high school years. I discovered it through a friend when I told her I've been searching for record/CD stores that sell Black Metal stuff. I was so excited when she told me about this place since I only traveled to Virgin records to buy the stuff I wanted. When I visited, I was not disappointed. I found what I was looking for. I'm an avid collector when it comes to CDs and vinyls. The first floor is filled with brand new CDs and vinyls. The north wall of the store seems to have music related DVDs. I never really checked it out since that wall seems very uninteresting. They have a vast selection when it comes to metal and punk. So there is no disappointment unless you are looking for items that have a strict limited release. The selection on the vinyls are pretty decent as well. They also have a selection that is not oriented around extreme music I believe, but I never explored it. The basement floor is half used CDs and half band shirts. I have bought both and haven't been disappointed with the quality of the clothes or with the playback of the CDs. Both floors always have music playing so it's quite pleasant and great in getting lost in your little world while looking for some gems. They play metal and punk most of the time so if you're not into that type of music, be ready when coming in. While they have a nice selection of items, they really lack in being friendly. Most of the staff members are metalheads I presume. Just because they are metalheads doesn't mean they have to be angry looking all the time. There are some nice fellows there though. I remember one of them was more social with me when he noticed my vest filled with band patches. Anyway, the customer should never feel unwelcomed or unsafe, right? I haven't been to this place in a while so I don't know how much has changed. The thing about record stores, I feel, is that it is dying out. I'm one of those persons who prefer listening to new music by buying CDs. However, when I started buying my stuff online (ebay or record label websites), I noticed it was much cheaper than buying it in record stores. I miss looking through stacks of CDs or vinyls. Buying online is more convenient for people with busy schedules. But if I had the time to go and search through those stacks, I would definetly be back. read more

Price nostalgia will always be one of the more curious aspects of the retail profession. People who pine for the "good ol' days" in terms of prices are always fascinating to me. The sad tradition of "amember when that record was only FIVE BUCKS?! Now it's SEVEN!" will never quite die out. Sadly. That being said, I went to Generation last month on a misguided sojourn resulting from a train delay after work. My beloved Q had a thorn in its paw, so I just started walking around Soho, hoping to have my foot run over by a Rolls Royce or something. Generation is the same place it was in the nineties, for sure. The high, hidden counter, the truly miserable short-straw working downstairs, the racks of forgotten hardcore t-shirts, it's all there. I walked down the metal stairs (down which I fell about 8 years ago) and into the den of vinyl. The vinyl collection isn't great, isn't bad. I don't think any record store will truly be AMAZING anymore, simply because we're waist-deep in the revitalization of the tradition at this point. Everyone is hoarding the truly great records. However, with the recession and the bottom falling out of our false optimism, people should start selling back their records sometime around xmas. Lord knows I am. Anyway. Generation is the neighborhood grocery store of record shops. At Associated or C-Town Town, I can find what I need, what I like and what makes me feel good. Will I find aged asiago for sandwiches? Nope. Just like I won't find any Neil Young sealed promo copies at Generation. It's just...A-OK. read more

My go-to record place. If I need a new release vinyl from any punk band, I go here. If I'm looking for a classic rock stalwart, I go here. If I'm on a budget and and in the mood for finding some used gems, I go here. Even if they don't have something in stock, they'll order it for you and should be in the store in a few days. The prices range: you're going to pay top dollar for a new release. Its used collection is pretty much at market value, depending on the condition of the vinyl itself. The best part of the store is definitely the reasonably priced vinyl in the front of the store. You could spend a bit of time shifting through, but that's the fun part. Highly recommended. read more

With the ever shrinking used record selection at their cousin store, Bleecker Records, I had to start coming here more. They do have more used records especially in the basement and the prices are reasonable. Asides from the used records they also have used CDs which to me are a bit overpriced at $7 each. But its the used records that keeps me checking back every once in awhile. The upstairs also have lots of new records, though I'm not a big fan of new records there were a few instances I had saw something interesting. On a side not, they tend to blast heavy metal music here and sometimes death metal, so be prepared. And to the people thats complaining about the staff. Yeah they may not smile, or they're not that friendly, but when was the last time you saw a rocker or heavy metal dude smile? read more

Generation Records: New York City's biggest independent record store specializing in hardcore, rock, and metal. That sounds great... but is it? I mostly shop around for heavy metal records and CDs, and Generation Records is by far the best place in town to get them. Their selection of heavy metal, as well as their hardcore/punk and I'm sure their alt/indie stuff as well, is very well spread out. They have some insane underground stuff along with the more known stuff. The used section is also very good, though like any other, it has its good and bad days. This place has tons of used records, and I never found myself to have the patience to go through all of them without having an idea of what I want. It is that insane. The staff here is hit or miss. Out of everyone who works and who had worked there, only like 2 were knowledgeable in the bands they carried. Everyone else's purpose is to just look something up for you if they have it in stock and ring you up, which is pretty pathetic. Another bad thing is how the owner of the store, Vinny, treats local bands. A friend of mine just wanted to drop some LPs off for him to sell - at a ludicrously cheap price. This dude Vinny told him to piss off because this is a business and random stuff won't sell. This is supposed to be our city's LOCAL record store - you're supposed to help out LOCAL bands! That left a bitter taste in my mouth. One final thing I must say is that a lot of the things here are in fact a bit overpriced. You're just going to weigh that in with some of the more obscure imports and how bad you want them. I've found the exact same CDs through some distros online for a little less with shipping. With that said, I still continue to come here because I support record stores but I am a bit more picky and conscious of what I buy. read more

One of the last truly indie music stores around. Selection is better if you like punk or metal. Some items are a little pricey & used items aren't too bad. They also have a nice selection of T-shirts, including some for women. Nice to place to kill time in, if only to look at the unusual and interesting album covers on the records. read more

Believe it or not, they used to be better. A must for the true die-hard Punk, Hardcore or Metal fan. Good selection of Alternative/Indie stuff as well as your classic Rock. A real record store! The selection is impressive considering the drastic change in the way we listen to music. I hope this place doesn't follow in the footsteps of other Manhattan businesses by mysteriously disappearing. Generation records is pretty sweet. It's huge and miraculously has a lot of smaller acts lumped in with all the regular stuff. The new stuff on the first floor is really over priced (~$17/cd). They have a dedicated metal section if you want to try and read those impossible, cliche metal fonts. Downstairs is where the love is: used cds. They have a big rack of metal/punk/hardcore stuff, and another tiny one with some industrial (and a medium sized one for regular stuff). They have a bunch of posters and an area full of black shirts. This place is gigantic, but when I was there, the downstairs was a bit empty. Hopefully they'll fill it up. read more

Vinyls on the basement floor were average price for the city: $10-$20. But what I fell in love with was their used CD's selection. They have a massive selection that is not in alphabetical order, but rather just under the first letter of the artist. My suggestion would be to know what you're looking for before taking on this mountain of music. I was looking for and successfully found The Cranberries and I think I found the only copies of their first first two albums. But if you have the time to sift through, then do it. They have some good tunes sitting around. read more

My favorite record store in NYC. I have the hardest time finding good punk and psychobilly CDs and this place has it all. I have never wanted a CD and not been able to find it here. The downstairs has a great selection of used CDS, which I recommend thumbing through first. They are really meticulous when it comes to buying used products, so you don't have to worrying about buying a used CD and then realizing it's scratched later on. I've gotten some great stuff in that section. They also have some nice/cheap band tees downstairs too. They have cats too roaming around the shop which I love! They're adorable! read more

I for one am largely into downloaded music, so I don't run excitedly into music stores like I might have a few years ago. All my hometown really had to offer were Target, Best Buy, and Tower nearby. I do heart Gen Records though. Wouldn't spend the money on most of the albums upstairs. And I agree with others that the employees are a little lofty, but that's the way to be and they help when they have to. You will not, however, find everything here. On my second visit, I had one guy searching several artists who fall under the supposed genres sold here--to no avail. I still love the place. It is afterall where I purchased the Breakfast Club t-shirt that has gotten me much acclaim and comment from various strangers everywhere. This place is small, but what a selection! I make it a point to go there every time I am in New York. Once I was attending a conference in new Jersey and me and a buddy flew in early and took a train to Manhattan just to go to Generation. I always come away with cool stuff I haven't seen anywhere else. I collect Hendrix. I have over 100 Hendrix discs and many of the rarest came from this store. Plus the people at the counter know their stuff and are friendly and helpful. read more

This past week was my first real visit to NYC, so I had to visit at least one record store. Reading up on Yelp, this place stuck out...so I hopped onto the subway to Greenwich Village to flip some vinyl. Walking in the door there is a large bin of new arrival used records that I would recommend starting at...there is at least 20 to 30 minutes of good browsing to be had here, and from my initial visit I would say it is your best bet to find something cool that you may not have know you were looking for...but would make a great addition to your record collection. My great find? The soundtrack to Some Kind of Wonderful...another great John Hughes production that includes Jesus and Mary Chain on the record. In the middle of the store's main floor you'll find all of the new vinyl...which had a really great selection of hard core metal and a ton of popular indie releases. I didn't spend too much time here. Head downstairs to the used record room. You could probably spend a few hours flipping through stuff here. I did for a bit, hopping here and there...but I got the feeling like these boxes had been searched through repeatedly...and my chances of finding anything of note was going to be slim, and that I would have had to have found it upstairs when it first came in. I headed back upstairs and noticed a ton of rarer albums displayed above with premium prices. you will not find any "steals" here...this place pretty much charges full price for these items. I found a few to be slightly overpriced in my opinion...but I managed to obtain a Siouxie and the Banshees album for 15 bucks, which was priced fairly for the excellent condition of the sleeve and the record itself. one bummer...no sticker to grab and put on my laptop....but they did have t-shirts for sale downstairs for 15 bucks, but none in my size. read more

Definitely a cool store. The vinyl selection downstairs seems pretty extensive. I was able to pick up a desired (by me) Cloak/Dagger LP for a reasonable price. I'd recommend this place in a heartbeat to anyone looking to pick up some music in NYC. The t-shirts were a bit expensive ($20 for a Hot Water Music tee? This is a real record store. I came into the city on a mission to find a few specific artists in used vinyl. I had the best luck here. The guy behind the upstairs counter was very friendly, I'd asked him for what I was looking for and he explained how the store was laid out (upstairs and down) and gave me the location of where he thought I'd have the best luck. Downstairs I searched through their very well laid out sections but didn't find what I wanted so I asked the clerk. He made sure I looked in the right spots. I told him I had and came up empty. He said he had something in the back that was (I guess) supposed to have gone out in the mail the previous day. I appreciated him doing that. I would have bought it but there were some scuffs and minor scratches which caused me to pass. Back upstairs in the new arrival area I found one of the artists I was looking for in excellent condition as well as two other LP's from an artist I wasn't intending to purchase, but sometimes I can't help myself. I panned on a few other albums due to quality but this is normal when dealing with anything used. I was glad to have just seen those available as they are not artists or specific albums I'd seen at local stores. On a side note, they seem to have a decent collection of new and reissued vinyl as well. I don't typically run into stores with new stuff in stock (except for a regional chain.) Most of the time I buy new online. I would recommend this place to friends and would definitely go back. read more

The last two record store days I've been at Generation. They always have a good selection of the special RSD releases, better than any of the other Bleecker St. record shops...but they open later than some of the other ones. I end up browsing their everyday vinyl selection too. They're pretty reliable for having great stuff, and they have a wicked collection of black tshirts. Seriously, if you need to replenish your supply of black rock and roll tshirts, this is the place to go. Anyway, the RSD scene is pretty cool. Always makes me wish I worked at a record store. read more

Really good new selection, big new arrivals bin... Make sure to check downstairs too for a good selection of used, t-shirts and 45s. I buy used primarily, 4/5 stars because the selection of used titles isn't quite as strong as the new selections. Buyer Beware: Do not go if you shouldn't be spending money! Not because of the price, but because of the selection. This place totally rules and I never leave without a huge smile and less than 3 great records in hand. This is definitely one of my favorite places in the city. The selection changes quite frequently (and I would know since I go about once a week), and I feel like it's a hidden gem of the city as it's never packed, unlike it's sister store Bleecker Street Records, and therefore is not as expensive as other places. I have been here a few times in the past and decided to come back hoping things changed up. This place still looks the same and the used CD's are still pricier than average. These used discs run at least $2 more than other places. One thing that annoys me is that the music is not sorted by genre. That works for some stores, but the CD's here are displayed too haphazardly for alphabetical sorting to work in my opinion. The vinyl was looking a bit better though. Overall, this place caters to metal, punk and grunge genres so it will work for some people. I myself have never seen the appeal. read more

I started buying records here when I was in high school, they used to have an amazing selection at really good prices.. fast forward a few years and everything has changed. Their selection has gotten worse and worse over time and their prices have soared much higher as well. I basically grew up going here as a kid and I still get nostalgia when I go in for a browse but it's just not feasible for me to shop here anymore. A lot has changed in the last 10 years. I think they're trying to become more hip and trendy with what they get shipments of and knowing plenty of hipster yuppie scum will come in made them feel like they can safely increase their prices. They used to have so many punk/emo/alternative/hardcore stuff I couldn't find in most stores. The other unfortunate thing is there are less and less options for me to go to these days and my favorite record store closed just last year, it's been a bummer that I can't go here or to bleeker st. anymore. That all being said, the people who work here are fantastic and if anyone is benefiting from the changes I at least hope its them. They've always been extremely kind and friendly to me and seem to love their jobs and for that I appreciate them greatly. Thank you for the good times and for helping me grow up with good music to jam to for a decade. Maybe one day we will meet again :) read more

This is a great spot for vinyl records. they have an extensive range. The used are really cheap. The others depending on artists can go upto $40 (Marvin Gaye). Helpful staff and well categorized. Definitely going back for more of my vinyl needs read more

The downstairs is where you need to go. Vinyl and used cd's from bands you would actually listen to. Stay away from the clothing bc its ridiculously overpriced and the cd's upstairs are as well. There is definitely the pretentious "i work in a record store im so much better than you" vibe too so beware of that. All in all theres some good finds if youre willing to dig and have an extra hour or two to waste. read more

This is a great record store, although, I really didn't find anything I HAD to have. Maybe I'm a little picky, but what I really wanted was some good blues and jazz records and there wasn't much there. (I know, they are rare, anyhow) But it was a lot of fun to browse through the top and bottom sections. The old country was scarce, too. I am not sure if the owner just buys whatever as cheap as possible or if the sell-through rate is so high, it's hard to keep the better artists in stock. My guess is the latter with the reasonable prices. I guess I'm of the opinion that a record store should have obscure, but it should also have a lot of what people are looking for. And my generation seems to be the largest audience, so perhaps stock more of what we may be looking for and what may spark the nostalgic feels? IDK. What do I know. I just need to stick with food and fashion. read more

on a blustery day in february the little lady and myself decided to celebrate our three year anniversary by going to nyc to eat ourselves stupid and spend a bunch of money that it took months to earn in a few hours. a friend had told us to skip generation but i i figured it couldnt hurt to just check it out and you know what i was right. of the 4 store we went to today generation might have been the best for a four reasons... 1) they had a ton of stuff that i wanted. 2 )they had a bunch of stuff i have and love which lets me know that my taste in music is catered to there. 3) they had and awesome cat who looked like a skinny version of our big fat old lady cat. 4) they had another awesome cat who had thumbs and was sleeping on top of the g-l 7inches!!!!!!! go to generation buy some cool used stuff, then be blown away by the stuff they manage to have new in stock and then pet some cats. you can give one of them a legit high five. read more
