    Sundae with marshmallow creme.

It's soft serve ice cream, good stuff. Though I will say it's a wee bit... I don't know how to put it... Watery? There's something to be noted about the texture of this ice cream - it's soft serve, as in it's lickable, however it holds its shape quite well to also be eaten with a spoon. Overall, I'd recommend this place. 9/10.

Review Visit: September 9th, 2015 Gene's is a sweet place to go. Another trip to Bloomington/Normal means another stop at an ice cream shack and another blog in a long string of ice cream shack posts. This one happened near the time ice cream shacks start to wind down for the season. As with most ice cream shacks, Gene's is one of those small buildings that only offers outside seating. But, I do recall there being a drive-thru, which is not rare but somewhat uncommon for ice cream shacks. On this particular day, my girlfriend and I parked behind the building and walked around to the front to place an order. After looking over the relatively simple menu, I decided upon the strawberry shortcake sundae. Aside from peanut butter-flavored things, strawberry-flavored things are my go-to items when I order sweets. I don't remember what my girlfriend ordered (maybe a banana split?) but I know that it didn't take long for our diabetes-in-a-cup order to be called out. As I said in the last paragraph, the menu is simple compared to other ice cream shacks. I suffer easily from choice paralysis, so the lack of a million options was a breath of fresh air. We hung out around the building as we chowed down (can you chow down ice cream?) our snacks. Each bite was a bliss of strawberry heaven. After I finished off my sundae, I debated going back up and asking if they offered free refills. My girlfriend said I was being silly and too optimistic. So, I didn't. But I did consider it for the comedic value. Any who, Gene's was a treat to visit. The menu was simple and offered a lot while offering not a lot at the same time. The parking situation is different. You park behind the building and walk around to the front to place the order. You can pull around the building and use the drive-thru, but you have to order from your passenger side due to street directions, I believe. I don't think I said this in all the other ice cream shack posts but a lot of these places are CASH ONLY, so make sure you have some just in case.

Basic classic ice cream place in Bloomington. Gene's Dairy Delight has a simple little menu. It has pretty typical ice cream sundaes. Also there's not even some hot food like many other ice cream stands have. They're cash only. A small place has a small menu. It's really some basic stuff. They have ice cream and not much else besides that. Just things to keep cool. They do also have slushies. It's about $1.80 or so for a small one in a cup. These come in a few flavors, and are simple but good. Has a drive thru but it's not always faster. It's also a tight parking lot. They're cash only and only open for spring and summer.

Family favorites are turtle sundaes, chocolate soda, and my favorite a lemon cone. Affordable for large families too!

Just a little drive up spot for ice cream, but it's truly awesome! Great quality! Feels like a classic ice cream shop. I would highly recommend!

I definitely recommend coming here for some ice cream and to chill with friends. The price is great for ice cream, and they have some space for you to sit and chat. The people are really nice, and make sure to get your order right. Their ice cream is very rich and milky just a warning for people who are particular about their ice cream. Nonetheless, I love it though! I highly recommend coming here with friends who want to enjoy a cool night and get some ice cream.

This place seems to be a staple in the Bloomington area! It was the first local place we tried after moving here and had no regrets about doing so! I was just happy we had enough cash in the car because we didn't know it was cash only! The parking lot was full, the line in front was long, and the cars were wrapped around the building but it was worth the wait for Gene's! Everything we ordered was amazing and we will definitely be going back soon! I'd personally recommend a shake or the vanilla ice cream with hot peaches! It was amazing!

The best ice cream. I ordered the Avalanche with 2 candies, which cost $1 extra. Only open for the summer, so come while you can.

After noticing that people who ordered after us had finished their entire meals, I went up to the management and asked what happened to our order. I was then told that it was because I ordered chicken strips that it took over forty minutes to make such a simple order. Keep in mind that a family with four children who came in after us had already gotten their fries and were halfway done with their ice cream. Another table that had two gentlemen who also ordered after us had finished their cheeseburgers. I have been a professional in the short order cooking business for over twelve years in the past, and I know for a fact it does not take that long to make chicken fingers (even if they were made from scratch and not frozen). I usually buy the gift certificates every Black Friday, but that will never happen again. I will never return to this establishment. Please feel free to reach out to me to buy my unused $30 gift certificates at half price, but be warned---this place is poorly managed, understaffed, and desperate for a line cook who can manage a couple deep-frier orders in a timely manner. Although I prefer to support local businesses, there are far better alternatives in town, like Culver's and Gene's. So ends about twenty years of patronage and many good family memories.

Review Visit: June 10th, 2015…read more Carl's Ice Cream.... Home of the Creepy Ice Cream Cone. Those eyes. Those ice cream eyes still haunt me to this day. They will never leave my memory. Nor will the decent ice cream served here. During one of my many trips to explore Bloomington-Normal, I decided to start trying out the ice cream shacks in the dual city. Twin cities. Hyphenated names. Whatever you want to call them. I used some Google-fu to look up places to grab the sugary snack and Carl's was one of the first results. My girlfriend at the time said that it was good enough for her, so we punched the address in to the GPS and headed that way. Upon pulling up, I was startled by the feeling that I was being watched. After getting out of the car, I had to look around and see what was causing that feeling. It was then that I locked eyes with Carl. The incredibly creepy ice cream cone on a pole that is staring down on you. Trying to ignore that, we shuffled to the front of the building and looked over the menu. Looking at their current online menu to help refresh my memory, I am surprised to see them offering only ice cream and ice cream-style treats. Most ice cream shacks offer not only a ton of different frozen dessert items but also a multitude of food items as well. Not Carl's. They just have ice cream and ice cream-related products. We eventually figured out what we wanted and placed an order. I remember getting my usual (peanut butter malt/blizzard/shake) and being just slightly disappointed in the flavor and lack of a wow-factor. Not but a year later, we ended back here by some stroke of luck and I got a cone of ice cream. It was mutli-colored (as seen below) and I remember enjoying that more than I did with my 2015 choice. Back to 2015, I remember us standing our and enjoying the nice snack after a long day of exploring. I just couldn't help but feel that Carl, the ice cream mascot, was looking down on us. Like a chef watching a VIP eating their signature meal to see their reaction. All in all though, the place was pretty good. More-so the second time around. The second trip would've scored a 4.75/5. I am still surprised they don't offer non-ice cream options, but maybe The Carl doesn't allow them to serve anything but ice cream. There is a second location in Normal, Illinois. They seem to have a 'muffler-man' statue that was repurposed in to a man holding ice cream. I have yet to visit that place but hopefully his stare is less soul-piercing than Carl, the Ice Cream Cone's.

But that being said there were a lot of GREAT things about this restaurant so I'll start there. The restaurant itself it's so moody and vibey I LOVED it, was such a good place for a date night, our waiter was so attentive, helped with all of our questions and a very patient with us as we worked through the menu. 10/10 service! We got the dumpling and pork bun appetizer and both were AMAZING, seriously the pork bun?? I could have eaten 1000 of them. Next was the sushi, I got the Atlantic hand roll and another member of the table got the rainbow roll, both were very fresh and flavorful, highly recommend. Next was the entree, I got the pork belly ramen, as a huge ramen fanatic I was SO excited, especially following up our appetizers, the bar was set high and unfortunately I was so disappointed. The broth was not very good and everything so extremely salty, I couldn't even eat the mushrooms in the bowl because they soaked up so much of the broth and it was like a salt bomb in my mouth. The pork belly was cooked well and I did really enjoy that, but for a $20 bowl of ramen, it really fell flat for me. I also got the sweet heat cocktail, and it also wasn't for me, cocktails are so personal so it's not that I wouldn't recommend someone try it, it's just that I didn't hit for me, and that was the general consensus of the table. While I had a great night, I would probably try a different restaurant for Asian food before I came back to this one!
