By the time I got her they had her sitting in the waiting room with a woman that was coughing and not covering her mouth. I told APD to take her to Providence for so many of the reasons I'm going to list here. They bought her here because Providence was full, so they bought her to the dirtiest hospital Anchorage has. The last time I was here, I bought my father in and we found out he had RSV when he returned back home The entire time they had my father sitting in the waiting room, never did he get into a room. Her nurse when she was in the room was nice but was she truly helpful. Slightly. It took twice asking for Motrin for her headache before she said the doctor wants to try Tramadol. The nurse offered it for the headache and never followed through. She has been in room air the entire time with her O2 dipping A LOT! But she was fine as they say. When she finally hit on oxygen is because I asked why is she not on oxygen and she's dipping? No one is coming to check her like we were told. When she beeped no one came in like she said they would. I asked her nurse an hour after admission came in to get insurance info, when she was getting her IV so she can get her scans done? She said who told you that? I told her the scan tech came up and said it and that she was going to tell her. Like wait what? The nurse walked in and said that's my fault usually if a doctor wants meds by mouth they don't do and IV. So you're admitting you're not doing your job correctly??? So an hour and half in she's on room air and dipping, headache still no meds, and no IV that's been ordered? Yeah she was not doing her job. It's to much to put in here, but do not take your loved ones here. I don't care if it's crowded go somewhere else.

Food was tasty, with some creative variations. Nurses and CNAs were quickly responsive to my needs and often proactive in offering help to make me more comfortable, for example, timing tylenol and ibuprofin 45 minutes before my arduous PT visits. The physical and occupational therapists were particularly impressive in personalizing my exercises to prepare me for my home situation, such as getting in and out of a truck, an air taxi, stairs at home. It was important to me to be able to get outside for fresh air every day, and my care team allowed me to wheel myself outside after the third day (with an alarm mat on the seat). The care at St. Elias exceeded my expectations and I have said so to many people since my discharge. Highly recommended. My only question is that they discharged me with no physical therapy exercise sheet and no dietitian's recommendations for increasing protein, etc to help facilitate bone regrowth.

Naturally we were limited to certain areas because of Covid but the Alaska Native Medical Center still did not disappoint. On the walls and as I understand it, there's an actual museum for art it is depicts and made by Native Americans. If you were unable to visit there are some photos posted on their website. If you are ever in Anchorage Alaska and have a little time on your hands I suggest a visit just for the art!

When patients had developmental problems like autism in addition to the psychiatric, they were not receiving adequate services because staff were not taught how to handle them. Sometimes staff would be short a quality personnel because staffing would be adjusted to keep the physical needs (for physical restraints) equally divided (eg. 1male on each side, 2female on each, but started out 2male 1female, when adjusted no quality female on one side). In essence, chronically under-staffed, under-educated, and physical demands take precedence for safety and not treatment. Recidivism rates very high, some patients prefer to be sent back, and a very violent, unsafe environment for both staff and patients.

Since there is no bus service within the base distance, I had to walk 2.9 miles from Fort Richardson to the VA clinic near Muldoon Gate. Upon arriving at the bus station at 6:18 am, right next to the VA clinic and bus 25 stop, my asthma began to act up due to the cold air, making it difficult to breathe. I went inside to use the restroom and took my inhaler, then sat down for about 10 to 15 minutes waiting for the bus. When a security officer approached me and greeted me, I responded cordially. However, when he returned a few minutes later and asked if I was waiting for someone, I felt a bit perplexed. After explaining I was waiting for the bus and providing my military spouse ID, the officer's tone and demeanor made me feel embarrassed and uncomfortable, particularly when he emphasized 'you're the military spouse.' As the bus arrived, two officers watched me from the door, staring, which I perceived as profiling. Regardless of my status as a military spouse, the treatment I received was unwarranted and profiling in nature, particularly given the circumstances of my car breaking down and needing to use the bus. I felt unwelcome and uncomfortable due to the manner in which I was looked at, akin to having committed a crime. The prolonged stare from both individuals as I boarded the bus and their continued gaze as the bus departed was not only unsettling but also peculiar, especially considering their position at the entryway.
