And then they have lovely ice cream and pancakes for dessert. Well, you can imagine how I rolled out the door of this place - never eaten so much in my life! Just goes to show this is really tasty food and an all round good experience. Watch your plates pile high, your food cook and laugh with your friends as you enjoy a competition of who can eat the most plates of food. Just be careful the chefs don't give your masterpiece to someone else - it's hard to keep up with who's who on a busy night!

At Gengy's you grab your dish and heard around the obstacle course popping whatever you want into your bowl. There's meats, salads, sauces, oils, spices galore. Then you take this over to the awesome 'cooking pit' where someone slaps all your selections onto a hot plate and cooks it for you. This is an opportunity to see how good of a chef you would be. Personally I found it took me a few times to get the hang of it. My first few plates were such a mish mash of flavours it was hard to know what was going on. After you have stuffed yourself to the brim with mains there is desert. Pancakes and ice cream and chocolatey sauces. And again... all you can eat!! Wear your elastic pants and go with an empty stomach!

From meat, vegetables, sauces, salads, breads and soups, to pancakes and ice cream, the buffet…read morespread at Gengis Khan has got to be one of the most extensive I have seen! As the name suggests, it's named after the Mongolian warrior, Genghis Khan. The food itself isn't Mongolian, but apparently this is how Genghis Khan fed his army after a brutal battle. Fun fact, huh? The basic concept of the Mongolian BBQ is simple. First, you fill a bowl up with raw meats (namely chicken, beef, lamb, and seafood), vegetables, sauces, oils and noodles. I'm not too much of a meat expert but I thought their meats were of fairly good quality. Then, you take it up to the chefs manning the huge hotplate in the middle of the restaurant, and watch them cook your selection to perfection (hey, that rhymed)! There is also fried rice and white rice available, as well as garlic bread, baked root vegetables and soups. For the vegetarians out there, not only do they have a wide range of vegetables that can be cooked by the chefs, there are plenty of fresh selections at the salad bar. To round your meal off, you can get the chefs to dish you up a pancake. If you ask nicely, they might even be able to make you one in the shape of Mickey Mouse. The pancakes are probably my highlight of the dining experience - super fluffy and they also have a variety of toppings and ice cream which you can put on them. The downside of this place is that it is quite small and it does get very busy. There will be times where you have to wait a while for the chef to cook your meal - my longest wait was nearly 30 minutes! Overall, the atmosphere of Gengis Khan is exciting, although a little noisy at times. Considering that you can eat all to your heart's content, the price is quite reasonable. It is a casual, family-friendly restaurant, so it's definitely more suited for family gatherings. I frequented this place quite often during my high school years, but I feel like I've 'grown out of it'... mainly because most of their patrons are either families or large groups of teenagers. Just make sure that you go hungry!

For our last meal in NZ, we wanted something super filling since we were flying out on a red eye…read more It had been awhile since either of us had Mongolian BBQ so we decided to check out what it was like in NZ. Gengy's was close to the airport and the price was reasonable (21NZ on Tues night; a little bit pricier on weekends) for AYCE. I had called ahead of time to ensure they were going to be open late. The gal who answered said they were going to be opened until 9:30pm so off we went. Gengy's is located in a strip mall with a few other restaurants that it shares the parking lot with. When we walked in around 8:15pm, the host stated that the chef will stop grilling around 9pm which kinda sucked since I thought we would have the grill until 9:30pm. After we sat down, it became a frantic rush to try to get in multiple bowls. Gengy's has a rule that you can only grill 1 bowl at a time which means you are a bit limited on how much you can cook in 1 sitting. Their meat selection was pretty awesome (seafood, lamb, chicken, pork, beef - some marinated, some not) with a wide selection of sauces. Their veggie selection left a lot to be desired though - they had ran out of white cabbage when we got there...which mystified me because cabbage is so cheap and basic! All their cooked foods looked kinda sad so I skipped out on most of it. They also had soup and some desserts. The chef can make you a pancake to go with your ice cream if you want. I probably would not show up at Gengy's close to their closing hour because it seemed like everything was winding down and not being refilled. There was only 1 chef grilling so the wait for the food was a bit longer and not really getting enough attention (more charred bits than usual). The server was on point and friendly but I would definitely come earlier so your food selection is a bit better! - Takes CC - On your birthday, you can eat for $1 (with 3 full priced paying adults)

I was pleasantly surprised. It is a buffet-style place where you grab a plate and choose from chopped vegetables, sliced meats, prawns, condiments and sauces etc - as much as you can pile on - and give it to the chef who cooks it on the hotplate. And I concede it was pretty tasty, enough to go back for seconds! Dessert is obtained by scooping your own ice cream and a topping of your choice - again a winner with the rugrats. I guess this place would be good for a meal with a large group - there is a family atmosphere and it is relaxed and casual and certainly nobody will go home starving!
