HISTORIC Mormon Station is the site of Nevada's first permanent non-native settlement and replicates the original 1851 Mormon Station trading post that burned down in 1910. It was rebuilt in 1947 as a museum and today it stores many original pioneer era artifacts. It was referred to as a fort but it was never one. There was never any military presence here nor did any battles take place. It was actually a stockade. BUILT AS A TRADING POST We took a self-guided walking tour inside the stockade (the enclosure of walls built with logs placed vertically, side by side). There were informative boards, one sign asked to imagine if you were standing at that very place and what would you expect to see... we would likely see oxen grazing, stable sheds, a haystack or two and a small vegetable garden. The stockade was used as corral for the oxen, horses and mules. COOL ARTIFACTS There were authentic exhibits used during that period. I especially found the semi trucks of the 1800's amusing. There was a real life piece of a freight wagon as one of the exhibits. The wagon displayed is a California rack-bed freight wagon. Mormon Station was worth a visit. I would recommend to include a stop here for a perfect loop around Lake Tahoe. Review #3736

A hit for each kid was guaranteed, as was a one base advance. And no outs. It was fun watching all those future hall of famers run around chasing balls or the bases. A large number of family members were in attendance, and a fun time was had by all. Lampe Park itself is strategically hidden from the US 395 main drag and can be accessed by turning at Sharkey's (then looping around St. Gall Church) or turning at Walgreens. A huge skateboard park is located across the street. Parking is limited, although we didn't have any problem with that during our visit. Lampe park is a large 32-acres and with impressive ball fields that we experiences up close yesterday. In addition, facilities include: a group pavillion, a soccer/multi-use field, tennis/pickle ball courts, handball and volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, picnic tables, BBQs, and of course a play structure. I found it to be a very roomy, well-kept, and welcoming park.

We were there to enjoy one of the speakers in their summer series, Christina Thomas, "Songbird: The Story of the Paiute People" and she was great as she shared the history of the Paiute people in the Great Basin. The Dangberg Ranch is located on HWY 88 just south of its intersection with HWY 395, and you'll head west onto a dirt road for about a mile to get to the ranch, and the road is a bit rough, and on the day we went, muddy from recent rain. Was it worth it? Make sure to keep an eye your kids here and be an arm length away since they can fall and hurt themselves pretty easily. Overall, it's a great park with a lot to offer, but adding more safety rails and closing some of those gaps would make it feel much more kid-friendly and secure. Secret Cove is a really beautiful, crystal-clear beach on Lake Tahoe's East Shore, with stunning…read moregranite boulders. Parking: Along Highway 28. It fills up super early, so plan accordingly. Clothing: Optional. If you plan to wear swimwear, I'd recommend putting it on at the parking lot since there isn't much privacy or covered area at the cove for changing. How to get there: A scenic 0.75-mile hike. Water: Warm-ish (for Tahoe standards) and a bright turquoise color. There are porta-potty restrooms available at the parking lot at the start of the trail. When I went, I only saw a couple of older men fully nude; most people were wearing swimwear. The hike is a bit steep at the beginning, so sturdy shoes or water shoes are a good idea. A lot of people bring water sports gear, coolers, and picnic setups. There was even a small hippie-style drum circle near the cove, which added to the laid-back vibe. Please remember to pack out all your trash and help keep this beautiful spot clean.

Angry about the price of the ride for my wife (equivalent to a full day ski pass), so we decided to go for a hike instead. Great decision. Gorgeous day, challenging hike but great trail. We did the Barn Trail to the Cal/Neva loop (not enough time to up to the waterfall). Way better than paying for the gondola with a 5 minute loop around a metal platform...Stayed at the Marriott so just walked out the back of the hotel. All day parking available for $10 via Venmo in the back of the shopping center across from the park entrance.

However you can walk in if you park outside of the entrance in the metered parking. Or just ride the bus here. Bus is free at least until autumn of 2026 and they might even extend it again. Once you walk up the trail be sure to divert up to the scenic lookout a top a beautifully flat rock. that is where the other photo here was taken from in December 2025. I caught the sunset and ended up leaving the trail a little after most people might find comfortable. it had gotten dark indeed. on the NV side. The bathrooms on the California side are closed for the season. this sky this time of year can turn an incredible pink at the very end of the day after the sun has set in the west. It's magical it's notable that while they will sell you a ticket at heavenly to ride the gondola for $108 you can just walk up to this lookout and see almost exactly the same view. you could stay there as long as you want. Seems like a good deal to me. it gets your workout app impressed too
