Unethical at best. I paid the amount I was told to pay. They billed my insurance ???? and then started sending me bills for over $700 on top of the $201 I had already paid. There's NOTHING in the paperwork you do for the testing that says you'll ever have to pay more than what you initially pay. This company is infuriating, misleading, and corrupt. Genova. Stop sending those flimsy, red and white french fry boats with your stool sample kit. They dont work, are messy and fall into the water. You expect us to hold it with one hand, while pooping, wipe, preserve no urine or no water, and then stand up and do the sample. One needs to be one of those people in Cirque de Soleil to do this. Please put in one of the toilet stool test "hats" as they are called. They fit over the opening of the toilet, attach with adhesive on the side of the toilet and can get attached far enough back, so that pee doesn't mix in (a problem for women). Then it is disposable. I went to Miguel Gonzalez, MD for help with my perfume allergy. He had told me that he could help me by drawing blood and sending it to Genova Diagnostics Lab - to get a "detoxification profile". I was never informed that the cost would be approximately $3,000, and the lab refuses to discuss charges with the patient. What a shock! And what did I learn from this costly procedure? This lab is not customer friendly, gives questionable test results, and will not discuss directly with the patient. I had 2 types of food sensitivity testing performed at Genova that gave discordant results (one showed milk sensitivity and another showed no milk sensitivity). I called customer service to get an explanation but was told they could only speak with the ordering provider. My degree is in Clinical Laboratory Science so I felt I would understand their explanation better than my chiropractor. And sure enough, the explanation from my chiropractor made no sense. To further add insult to injury, the cost of the testing given to my chiropractor at the time of service was not the price she was later invoiced for. Again, Genova would not discuss pricing with me. There are several complaints against this company with the BBB for their billing practices. Caveat emptor! After contacting Genova on my continued illness, they referred me to their insurance person who made me feel they would be compensating me for all my medical bills as well as pain and suffering. I provided all the bills, diagnosis and hospital records they requested. NOTHING back! Had three tests done here. My doctor said they would each cost anywhere from $249-$399. Before I even got the results back I ended up with 3 bills each over $1000. When I called to ask what happened they said that the discounted price is what they offer when they bill the practitioner (the option I chose) and since the practitioner said I would be paying for it they decided to charge me a much higher amount. Additionally they charged me for one test twice. Beyond frustrating when they claim that test costs $1300. To anyone looking to work with them please be very very careful. I would recommend using Great Plains instead as they are much more up front, honest, have better customer service and usually offer more information with each test. read more

They billed me $409 about 6 months after the tests were done. Before taking the tests, I asked how much the tests would be if insurance didn't cover them and they told me no more than $150 per test. Now they charged me $409 on one and $180 on the other. I should've read the reviews before I went through with tests and found a different provider. read more

SIMPLY STAY AWAY. You've been warned! Read the reviews! I ended up going forward with Genova (against my better judgement) only because my dr recommended them. I informed my dr that Genova's reviews were terrible and she did convey that she was aware of billing issues. I went forward nonetheless. There are no prices on the website! Genova fails to provide any pricing before service. Genova's own online "pay assist" tool failed to provide accurate pricing information. I used their 'pay assist' price tool to help understand how much my tests would be. After filling out all the information on the website, including ALL my insurance info, the Genova website told me that my test would be $195. I sent a check in that amount as payment. After the test was performed, I was sent another bill for $185. That bill included an invoice to my insurance company for $1,376.94, a deduction for my $195 payment and a credit of $996.94 as insurance adjustment. That would leave a balance of $185 due, according to their math. This billing is very significant because is misleads the patient into thinking that the bill was REALLY $1,376.94 and the patient is getting a break by only paying a balance of $185. The large bill could scare you into paying the small balance. I called on March 20th to discuss this bill. Their office was closed. I called again on April 5 and spoke with Christine in billing. The reason I called was to better understand the bill and find out why I owed $185. Christine disclosed to me that Genova can't post the prices of any of the tests on their website because their medical providers won't allow it. She suggested that Genova partners with unscrupulous doctors who upsell Genova's products and consequently, Genova won't/can't post any prices. There are no prices on Genova's website for any of the testing. Christine advised me that the pricing tool was an 'estimate' and not exact. I informed her that no business should be allowed to provide an estimate, perform the work and then double the price after the work has been completed without informing the customer of the updated pricing before hand. Christine also disclosed that in fact, I was given the cash price of $380 and that the $1376.94 price on the bill was an made up 'insurance price'. This company could not only be misrepresenting pricing to their customers, they could also be committing insurance fraud by overcharging insurance companies. I have filed a complaint with the BBB and pursuing legal options. read more

My experience was 5-star from the time I filed the paperwork (the estimate provided was what I had to pay... no hidden fees, no extra charges) until getting the results. I am an integrative physician and I have used this lab for over 20 years, so I have a lot of experience with this laboratory. From a medical standpoint, this lab provides invaluable information for the care of chronically ill patients. The accuracy and presentation of the data are excellent. If you are seriously ill, this is one of the few laboratories that can provide the information needed to get down to the root cause of illness. I see a lot of negative reviews and they are in regard to billing issues, not the quality of the laboratory. To get the best pricing you need to submit payment with the sample. If you do not you are going to get the insurance billing price, which is considerably higher. I can't recall a case where these issues were not ultimately resolved, but they can be frustrating. read more

The first two kits they sent me were incomplete. When I finally sent in the complete test, a few weeks later they sent me another one; no explanation, call, email, or letter. I had to call them, and they said it wasn't frozen completely, and to re-do the full test. So I used the requisition form to get the test re-done, sent it in, then received another test a few weeks later - this was the one I was supposed to use to re-do the full test (again, no communication or explanation), so the one I had just sent in was only partial. They were able to piece together the first two tests, for an approximation of results. Then I started getting bills - which was odd, since I received a waiver to get a complimentary test from their rep, due to financial hardship. I was getting letters every week or two threatening to take me to collections. I emailed the company and my doctor, and found out they were charging me 60%, since that's what my insurance company bills my doc, but I have no copay, and Genova finally turfed it to the rep who originally approved the complimentary test. Finally got the bills resolved months later, and their billing department didn't seem happy. I will NOT use this company again for testing. And I am training to be a provider, and this experience has influenced me greatly and I will NOT be using Genova in the future for my patients. read more

I'm frustrated with Genova. My toxin & detoxification markers show I'm high in Ketophenylacetic acid (from Styrene), Hydroxyisobutyric acid (from Mtbe) and orotic acid. I called to ask why they tested for these things, and all they could say was "talk to your provider" -not even answering in generalities why these were an issue-My provider said that even her rep didn't know why they test for this. (I've been on city water my whole life, never well water). Left me with more questions, and no answers. Also I seem to be a poor "methylator" but the only info I can find says do sensible lifestyle things, and take supplements. ANY, ANY information would be welcome. Definitely feel something unethical going on here. Was told I had to pay $249 EZ Pay before they'd bill my insurance. Asked for itemized charges and would not send them to me. Said I could bill directly but if any charges are denied, I'll be responsible for full amount. Basically, I can take my chances and pay $249 blindly, still be responsible for deductible and any copay, or I can pay $2400 cash and bill insurance for reimbursement. I would like to add that I talked to several people and one of the men literally talked me into billing insurance even when I objected by telling him I was on the so-called ez plan. I am an MD and have used this lab successfully for many years. The negative reviews I see below do NOT reflect my and my patients' experience. When I read the negative reviews I note some common threads. I always tell my patients that they must include payment - a check if you don't want to trust them with a credit card . I remind them they must fill in all the info clearly. I tell them they will receive an EOB that will scare the heck out of them but as long as Genova is paid in advance that this is a formality. This advice, followed accurately, reliably works. One person ( Nathaly H) sent them 2 requisitions and expected them to transfer the information and is upset that didn't work out. Kandy L. didn't give them a working credit card number and got bumped to billing. Once they send you to billing they WILL try to collect just as aggressively as any conventional laboratory. The trick is to do it right the first time. M.G. was upset that a customer service representative refused to play doctor and explain the nuances of food sensitivity testing. NOT their responsibility and NOT an indication of inaccuracy, just something that their doctor should be discussing with them as it is highly complex and nuanced. J.A. says they refused to tell you the cost. He/She should have just asked hiser doctor. Their price list is on their website but it is only available to registered physicians. Folks, we live in a crazy insurance world where the cost is not the cost. Insurance companies insist on 75-80% discounted prices for their members and will have shills call offices and labs to make sure they are not discounting their services to anyone else. I applaud Genova for finding a way to address this insane situation such that my patients can get alternative testing at a reasonable price. What other reviewers have said is absolutely true. I was told by my doctor that this test would cost $139.00 using their 'EZ Pay' option. I submitted my form correctly, and yet, they are now trying to charge me $2500 because they had an "issue" trying to run my card. They didn't call me, of course, to verify my credit card number (which I'm assuming I wrote down wrong). They just sent me a bill instead. Their customer service is ABSOLUTELY ABYSMAL. They are horrible to you on purpose. I have tried explaining things to them and all I get back over and over again is, "Please call to remit your payment." I am now taking legal action because they have stopped responding to my emails, and told me they are sending me to collections. It's so bad that I told my doctor I was changing providers because NO ONE should work with this company, considering the reputation they have. read more

The Adrenocortex Stress Profile is a complicated test that takes almost 24 hours to complete (6 timed saliva tests). I had to take a day off work to complete this test. Then with no explanation, I got a letter from Genova saying that an "unexpected issue" prevented them from running the test and I would have to repeat it! Lose another day at work?! I tried calling their customer service 4 times and was put on hold for over an hour each time. Their message says that it will take them up to 3 days to return my call. Covid or not, this is entirely unsatisfactory way to treat a patient. read more

They even just settled a $43M lawsuit to resolve allegations of medically unnecessary tests. I called a customer service representative BEFORE sending in my sample with the requisition form to confirm that the tests were going to be done that my doctor was asking for with the sample kit the office gave me. I put a note in there with two requisition forms because one of them was the ordering physician and the other one was the functional medicine doctor that needed copies of the results sent to him. The requisition form of my ordering physician was completely filled out with my insurance information, credit card info and signature on it. Around the time my results should be ready they send me a new kit with the requisition form of the functional medicine doctor. I was confused so I called them and the customer service representative was not at all helpful and annoyed by my call. He had no record of the requisition form from the ordering physician with all the information on it. He assured me he didn't get it or it might "have fallen out" in the mailing process (but he got the other form that was attached to the one that was "lost"? umm okay). What I think happened is that the incompetent employee who opened my sample kit was not able to give me a call if he/she was confused upon receiving my sample and instead threw away the requisition form and said "do it all over again". Mind you my credit card information was on the form that they claim they never got. How frustrating this is! This company has horrible customer service. Do they think it's "fun" collecting stool samples? How inconsiderate of them to just throw mine away without clarifying first and their test results are complicated to understand and interpret. I don't think they are reliable. They are more assumptions than actual correlations. I told the customer service rep I was going to use a different company. What he doesn't know, is that I work for a doctor that uses them a lot in her practice and she was already herself starting to dislike this lab and is moving to a different company so after I go back next week and request my tests be done by someone else because of this experience it will definitely sway her not to use them anymore. They will lose her business. They wasted my time and her staff time when they could have just CALLED and asked questions if they weren't sure which requisition form to use. Take responsibility for YOUR mistakes Genova. I would recommend you use Great Plains Laboratory instead. They aren't secretive about their prices and they tell you on their website what insurances they accept and what tests won't be covered. Straight forward customer service. read more

I was told that this stool test by my naturapathic dr would be covered by insurance. They charged me almost 1400 dollars on tests that were much less than that. I paid thinking I had to pay the full amount, only to be told by my insurance I didn't owe the full amount. I spoke to Niki at customer service, she was rude and unhelpful. Original test kit should have included opportunities for both blood and urine. Only included blood. My provider told me to go ahead with just blood. After finding a concern in my bloodwork, she wanted to look at my urine. We requested a kit from Genova. At this point my original testing was done 3/12/22. I didn't receive my urine kit to send back until two months later. I received two kits at that time. Had to spend plenty of time on the phone waiting for and then talking to customer service to know what kit to use. Didn't include directions. Had to get those emailed to me. I overnighted my kit from Fedex 5/11. I had to pay $125 of my own money to do so because they didn't include a label (how would I know they should have?). Fedex tracking shows that they received it on 5/12. Today, 5/25 I get a call from a woman in CALIFORNIA. She received my kit- urine sample, credit card information, SSN and all!!! Fantastic! She informed me that she has been waiting for a test kit from Genova. Instead of shipping this woman the kit that she needed she received all of my most personal information and bodily fluids instead. BEYOND unbelievable. This has to be a HIPPA violation in some way shape or form I'm sure. What a complete violation of privacy. I am THANKFULLY feeling better since my initial concerns and results from my bloodwork, but can you IMAGINE if I had a real illness or serious issue? I have a newborn at home and am trying to take care of my body post partum and spend time with my infant and instead I spend my time calling Genova's customer service regularly. This business is a scam! I was told by my doctor that I would pay am up front fee and then my insurance would handle the rest for a GI test. I paid 171$ then was charged 1600$ on top of that to my insurance company while I was in the hospital. And by the way, the hospital never used any of those "GI results" with any of my treatment. I finally paid the 1600$ through my insurance and now they want 524$ on top of that. Thats over 2000$ for one stool test! Why would I ever want to see a doctor who uses this company?! Scammy - do not use! My doctor recommended having the IgG food antibody profile done to determine if I had any food allergies. She assured me that the cost would be $300. Without further research, I agreed. Complaints: 1) After receiving my results & being told I was allergic to EVERYTHING (lettuce?!), I looked at the NIH & NHS websites & found there is NO good scientific evidence that IgG antibody profiles indicate intolerance of foods. Quite the opposite, they may show simply that you've consumed a food recently. Although it is not the fault of the lab that my doctor mislead me on the validity of IgG testing, I began the whole process with a bad taste in my mouth, by knowing I would be paying for tests that had little-to-no scientific support. 2) My bill was ~$2600. 3) I was told to mail in my EoB to receive the price correction. I mailed 1 in, it was "lost" in the mail & they said they never received it. I emailed a .pdf & received a confirmation, but 1 month later received a "final" billing notice saying my account was past due. When I called, they said my account showed a balance of $0 instead. Either their billing system is a mess, or they are hoping people will pay out of fear, & they will benefit. I would not deal with this company again. read more

Whatever expertise they may have in processing test results, the sheer frustration of multiple calls to their billing department to clear up the invoicing for 1 or 2 test results is truly repellent. My doctor stopped using them as a provider because they repeatedly billed (3-4X!) more than the rate promised to her patients. They also bill multiple times for the same appointment, and send to collections amounts that have already been paid. I'd chalk it up to disorganization, if they weren't SO consistent in overbilling and rebilling. I think they are charlatans who prey on their patients, and that "billing errors" are literally a revenue stream for them. Avoid - and physicians, do not get your lab results here. I have used this company since they were called Great Smokies and I never had any problem with the amount they charged me for a test I need from them every year. I always knew what it was going to cost me and that it wasn't covered by insurance, but I received a bill for over $2000 for a test that used to cost $400.00! I am on disability for chronic illness and there is no way I can afford this. I tried to call them and get help and woman told me I would receive a call back from the "higher ups" about it, and I never did. Instead, I just keep receiving bills every week hounding me about this. I don't know what to do. I will try to call again and ask for mercy, but they were NEVER like this when Great Smokies owned it. My own experience with this lab was stellar, and if I ever again have a serious health problem, I will always insist that my doctor use this lab. I had bizarre symptoms for eight years, including a horrible, itchy rash and severe short-term memory loss. Every test I had turned out oddly. Cholesterol was suddenly dangerously high (I'm a longterm vegetarian with an aversion to sweets); thyroid was doing odd things; I had scleroderma (yeah right) and various other diseases I'd never heard of. I lived in Winston-Salem, and none of the high-powered in that medical center town helped me at all. Everyone just wanted to give me drugs, which I steadfastly refused to take because no doctor was connecting the dots and had an explanation for why I suddenly had problems in every part of my body. I finally started doing my own research, and I found a sensible doctor who didn't push drugs on me (Arias is the name; at the time he was Elkin). We both had a hunch, and I had a metals test. Which, by the way, looks at the amount of metals stored in the tissues; blood tests measure only current exposure. We used this company. When the results were in, I received a whole sheath of color-coded materials from this lab, detailing what was going on in my tissues. I had 3.5 times as much lead in my body as the measure at which the federal government declares a person to be lead poisoned. I went through chelation therapy, which is a slow and not entirely comfortable process. But at the end of it, I was back to normal for the first time in eight years. All tests done after chelation therapy--the same ones that were so awry beforehand--showed me to be normal. I don't know about the money end of things, which seems paramount in most of the criticisms here. I had done my own research on that score and knew that my insurance company wouldn't pick up a penny. So I paid for the tests out of my own pocket. All I can say is this: It's the best money I've ever spent. Had I continued running to doctors in Winston-Salem and, more to the point, had I taken the medicines being urged on me, I have no doubt whatsoever that I would have died or that my health would have been destroyed. I received a $2000.00 bill from Genova Diagnostics. I was told that I would have to pay $189.00 if my insurance didn't cover the bill. However, I did pay the bill but I made a mistake and paid another company the money thinking I was paying Genova. Genova sent me to collections and now I'm trying to resolve this issue by filling a complaint against Genova with the Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. Awful experience with this company and their billing Dept -- never mind the relatively useless results that i got back. I should have never been coned into doing these test! AVOID! After my blood work I eventually received a bill - which i probabily waited a few weeks before eventually sending to my insurance to ask if they would please consider covering some of it. Isn't that just relatively normal for medical bills. Note that the total due was ~$120 if i paid before a certain date ( within 60 days or so). Yes, i forgot and eventually 90 days had passed and I hadn't heard back from my insurance company. I picked up the phone to call to settle the bill and was told the total was over $1,000. Yes. That's right. If i had paid sooner it would have only been a fraction of the price but in the 30 days that i waited to pay, they jacked the price up. Needless to say, i was upset and demanded to speak with a manager. The woman made up some bogus rationale about the way they " have to" upcharge after a certain period of time. I explained i was waiting for my insurance and life got in the way and my kids and work travel and apologized and asked for them to make an exception. Eventually, she said she could bring the total down to $300 and something. I thought to myself, well that's crazy, she just dropped the price significantly after telling me she couldn't - why could not she just honor the original $120? I demanded she reconsider. She put me on hold and then ......we got disconnected. Great. So a week later i called back and a new women from billing said she read in the notes that i owed ~$300. I tried again to get her to bend but she refused. I was pissed and eventually gave her my cc - promising id let the world know how ridiculous their billing process was and hung up the phone. I was angry and felt taken advantage of. Fast forward 2 weeks and I've been getting bills every week for an outstanding balance of $700. So are they being spiteful or did they lie or just bad at billing? I'll spend yet more hours tomorrow on the phone with their billing department and will be sure to follow that with a call to the Better Business Bureau as well as the referring doctor who needs to know how bad this company is at customer service. read more

My doctor ordered stool testing. I paid $171.00 up front for them to bill my insurance anyway for $2,499.00. Just for them to say "Most of these amounts are above normal" which is why my insurance denied some of them and then Genova sent me a bill for $273.76 EXTRA after the fact. I paid you the $171 so you wouldn't bill my insurance! My doctor said this was the cost for the testing completely($171.00) which is why I prepaid AND confirmed on your site! If you use this testing, I can't say you will get scammed 100%, but I am saying that all of these negative reviews are absolutely correct, and this place has horrible billing practices that take advantage of sometimes very sick people. They are very hard to reach, good luck! The invoice says $2499 for the invoice yet has an adjustment( payment from my insurance) of $2054.24. Why are you trying to charge insurance companies sooooo much more than your advertised and listed pricing? That's a 139% increase to the cost you sent me. And an 88% price increase to the price you listed for me on your site! This is why insurance premiums have increased 47% in the last decade. There needs to be a disclaimer to their blanket statement to whom they claim to be in network stating to contact your insurance company to confirm your plan is in/out of network.
