Went in for a haircut. Gentleman cutting my hair got annoyed that I was indecisive about what to do with my hair, was hoping for some advice but didn't get any. Sexist. Discriminatory. I called several days ago to make an appointment. I was clear it was for myself, and that I needed a tribal design shaved into a buzz cut (which I already have) for a costume I was wearing to an event the next day. They said anyone in the lounge could do that and I could go online to set up an appointment. So I went online and made the appointment (which required my credit card). I showed up at my appointment and the woman there was cutting someone else's hair. She said, "Oh, is it for your son?" I had my 2-year-old son and 4- year-old daughter with me. I told her no, it was for me. I already have a buzz cut and need a tribal design for a costume. She warned me that the owner may not allow her to cut my hair because I'm a woman. He came in a few minutes later and asked, "How can I help you?" I told him I had an appointment to get tribal design shaved into my buzz. He checked his computer and asked, "Rachel?" I nodded. He then walked over to me and told me that this barber shop only cuts men's hair. I asked, "why? What is different about my hair than the man's over there? I'm asking for something only a barbershop can do, and I'm trying to support local businesses by going to one in my own city, and you're turning me away because I'm a woman? That's sexist." He argued, "No, we are not sexist." I replied, "Turning me away based solely on the fact that I am a woman IS THE DEFINITION of sexist!" He then smiled and said "Have a nice day!" And I left. What. The. Heck. I am so so so disappointed that any business would turn people away based on gender. I don't have my costume ready for tomorrow. My children witnessed this discrimination and my subsequent anger and hurt. My daughter was so confused about why I was leaving angry and close to tears instead of having the new haircut I was so excited about. Unbelievable. read more

I have tried a few other barbers around the area that took appointments and this place is by far one of the best I have tried. The owner was pleasant, attentive, and skilled. The atmosphere was relaxing but I didn't have to wait long. I showed up 15 mins early for my appointment and at my appointed time he was ready to start. The cut was great with a lot of attention to detail. WoW! The best haircut I've ever had (in 63 years) and that's just the half of it. Ultra-cool interior with an 1890's meets 2020 feel. It's like this place just fell out of a time machine and landed in.......Porterdale?? Yep, Porterdale. Precision haircut using shears and a hot towel at the end. Worth every nickel. Do yourself a favour and book an appointment with these guys. I can't imagine anybody being disappointed, except maybe that chick hat didn't get her "tribal?(?) thing. Oh, and a razor finish of those pesky neck hairs. I feel bad because I forgot the Master Barber's name, but if I'm being honest, I was a bit overwhelmed. This is now my regular place. I have been 4 times now and the consistency along with incredible attention to detail by Michael Maurice is exactly what I want.
