Found out about the toy store Genuine Toy Co online by searching thru apple map. hesitant to drive from west Bloomfield to Plymouth but after knowing they are the authorized dealer of Smiskis", I say the drive was long but worth the trip! Located in downtown Plymouth, the buildings look historical. Public parking is available but limited to 2 hours parking. It gave us enough time to park and walk towards the GTC. I find the window display from the outside to be intimidating and made me think that the prices of the items they sell are expensive. Surprised to find out later that they sell toys at a comparable price. most of the employees we saw were female...I find them friendly and knowledgeable of what's new and trendy when it comes to toys for the kids and young at heart. saw a lot of plush bears/puppies, and age appropriate educational toys. what's great about the store is they have a point system for every dollar spent. they may ask you to join and record your phone number so they can contact you if the items you're looking for is already available. looking forward in opening my first box of museum series Smiski! read more

Employees are racist, when I went with another black person they followed us in the store. Mind you we're both teenagers and there were groups of white teenagers in the establishment. I have it on video of them following the only black people in the store and telling us we can't touch the toys unless we're going to buy it. In the video it's two ladies and you can see one coming around the corner looking me up and down and the other following my friend telling him to put a toy down. read more

Cute shop in downtown Plymouth. We took my little cousin in to look for a soccer ball. Unfortunately they didn't have them but they did have a few other balls so we picked one of those up for her. The fact that they didn't have a soccer ball is no knock on them, though, because they're packed with tons of other toys--mostly educational and creative--for kids to enjoy. Loads of stuffed animals, a whole wall of board games, and a TON of my little cuz's favorite Calico Critters. They have little play stations set up throughout the store and we had a hard time pulling her away from the CC house, which she actually has at home! Lots of old fashioned toys, a few I even recognized from my youth! As a kid my favorite toys and games were educational ones (a nerd since day one) and I would have been THRILLED to come into a store like this. Loads of sets available to help sharpen your kid's mind while having fun. And the staff here is very friendly. Not pushy but helpful nonetheless and they allowed us to browse and play without staring us down. We had a hard time pulling my cousin out of here, but I'm not going to lie. I didn't mind! read more

What a great spot! There were many people there to help us and they were not over-bearing, of which pushy salespeople is a huge pet peeve of mine. They had great old school new toys (Shrinkidinks, Colorforms,etc...) from when I was young, new artistic toys for making/creating things, discovery toys for the young scientists/Magicians, and learning games/toys. They graciously searched for a product they did not have on their shelves and got it from their off site storage and brought it to the store for us. They then wrapped all we bought for free, suggesting different ways to present it and a variety of wrapping paper to choose from. What a great spot to find a toy that a child can grow with and not just casually throw away like those cheap plastic things that kids always end up with at Christmas time. I was glad I took the previous sole reviewers advice and drove over here. There are neat places to eat at very near by so it was nice trip all round. Downtown Plymouth is always nice to browse through. TLDR: Toys for kids from 3 to 10 years old. You have to Park in Street. Free wrapping. Great toy selection with quality toys. Welcoming but not overbearing service. Worth the trip! Great little places to go have something to eat near by. read more

Genuine Toy Co. has gone out of their way to make sure their customers have one of the most highly sought after items of the COVID-19 pandemic: puzzles. The owners have truly reached out to help the community stay sane at home. With recent orders, they've even included mini antiseptic wipes. It was so easy to order a puzzle! I was able to look on their social media account where they have albums of puzzles sorted by size. When I found the puzzles I wanted, I called and paid directly over the phone. I was able to drive down to the store and call from my vehicle to pick up in only 15 minutes. Genuine Toy Co. made the entire experience safe and easy. They have done an excellent job of connecting with all customers and evolving their practices on the fly. In store, they have a huge variety of different toys and games for purchase, and most can be ordered over the phone. Thank you for such excellent service! read more

The Geniune Toy Company. It's name says it all. It is genuine! That's for sure. It is a wonderful toy company. I was glad to see such a wide variety of toys arranged in the shop. Staff and management are engaged at many different levels. They were approachable and offered information freely. The location is excellent. I had an easy time parking, though, it can be a bit cramped when the whole street that the Genuine Toy Company is on is busy. There is plenty of parking in the surrounding area, so, not to worry. The building that the Genuine Toy Company in is quaint and easy to walk around in. There are handicapped entrances. The aisles in the store are wide and accommodate all sorts of traffic including baby carriages and wheelchairs. As for their toy selection - top rate! First flight! The best. Prices are reasonable too. Whether you are seeking a traditional toy or a modern toy this store has a great number of choices. The rooms are festively and interestingly decorated. My favorite part was finding harmonicas and tops I had been looking for - finally! Lots of items and notions for parties as well. Their doll selection and dinosaur collections are enjoyable. Board games - puzzles - I could go on but why don't you just go on over? I hope you have as nice a time as I do when I visit and go shopping. read more

We were out with my two boys (4 and 7) looking for a birthday present for a friend's birthday. Overall, the store has a lot of stuff to offer. Unfortunately, the staff isn't very kid friendly. One worker didn't like that my son had a hair band on and instead of asking if he wanted to buy it (or if we wanted to), she told him he needed to hand it over and not wear it in the store for "sanitary reasons." I get it, but why not check to see if the customer is playing with or wearing something they intend on buying? A little bit later, the boys were playing with gorilla grabber claws and a different worker came over and asked that they not play with them because they didn't want them getting dirty. My wife had three or four things in her hands ready to buy, I said put em back, we'll take our business elsewhere. read more

This place has the feel of a Suburban Temple of the Child Worshiping Bourgeois as much as a toy store. An entire wall is focused on helping the wittle dawlings win their daycare science fair. I am sure many a McMansion empty-second-dining room cum play-room has been filled with GTC's offerings. Pure heaven for over-indulgent aunts and grandmas. Its saving grace from my perspective, however, is its surprising array of grown up games that you can't find in Target. The offerings range from the indiekid/nerd fave, Settlers of Catan, to fantasy parodies (Munchkins), war games (Axis and Allies), and a sophisticated Sherlock Holmes version of Clue (220B Baker Street). Lots more. I haven't had to ask the staff for help or suggestions, but they don't really have that gamer look to them. I wonder if any of them have actually played any of these games. Get a burger next door at Burger Spot and stop in - you might be surprised too. read more

Wide variety of items for all ages, invested in the community, does the right thing for the customer

Until recently, I haven't shopped in a toy store or the toy section for over a decade and half. All the kids in my family are no longer kids and there hasn't been an appearance of munchkins in my circle of family and friends until the past year or so. In the past year, my sister-in-law and a friend both had little ones. So in turn, I have found myself in the toy section at Target trying to find cool gifts for them. Target is great and all, but sometimes you need something a little more local and specialized. This is where the Genuine Toy Company enters the story. I've passed by this place probably a hundred times (99 of which were probably after a boozy night out with some friends), but it was during the Plymouth Ice Festival I decided to check it out. Confession: I only walked in because they had a sign on their door advertising that they carry the Classic Spirograph (not the bastardized version that Hasbro makes now). The original hasn't been in production for a while. This is kind of a big deal. I walked in and was immediately guided to the retro Spirograph but I decided to look for a bit. I think I got kind of lost in here! They have this huge selection of games, educational toys, dolls, stuffed animals and crazy amounts more. No Polly Pockets or Bratz in sight! I especially loved the throwback Fisher Price toys and the Stuffed Germs --- little stuffed renderings of lovely diseases and bugs like Bird flu, B. Pertussis, Gangrene and Ebola (gross, but so cool at the same time). I so know what my niece is getting for her next bday, unfortunately it probably won't be one of those stuffed germs, but nonetheless it will still be super cool and maybe even a throwback item. The whole time I was looking, the staff was friendly and nice. Since it was during the Ice Festival, the place had a number of customers. The staff even let people shop after closing time and made no big deal about having to close exactly at five. I didn't have to ask for help but I have the feeling that the owner would probably be super knowledgable and helpful with finding the right toy, especially for us, kidless folk. I am looking forward to shopping here sometime again for the little munchkins I know and maybe for myself. Hey, sometimes growing up is hard to do! read more

Prices very reasonable considering it is an independently owned shop competing with "big box" stores (Target, Toys R Us...). Great toy shop! Unique and original toys! Toys that will take you back to your childhood. They also offer free gift wrapping which in my opinion is a HUGE plus! If you're shopping with children make sure to park your stroller in the hall as there are some very narrow turns, other than that it is a great shopping experience. read more

This is a cute independent store in downtown Plymouth. What it lacks in size and selection (my reason for four instead of five stars), it makes up for in quality of toy offered. The store focuses on creative and original toys, and staff are quite knowledgable about which toys are appropriate and trendy for age and gender. Prices are reasonable. read more
