Repeat customer, but not anymore. Rude employees. I've bought Lionel and Bachmann products at the Nankin Hobby Farmington location multiple times over the last few years, and each time has been a surprisingly negative experience. During my second to last trip, I was given a cheap plastic grocery bag to carry about $150 worth of spare track, and the sharp ending connectors tore through the bottom before I was out the door. On my most recent trip to Nankin Hobby Farmington, I bought just under $100 worth of track, which totally depleted a few of their stocks. Considering the snow and puddles outside, I thought I could take one of the empty brown cardboard boxes I was taking the 30" inch sections of track from. When I was checking out, an angry male employee -- who never even approached me during my 20 minutes of browsing -- rushed up to give me some hostile admonishment about the box, claiming he would have to use a new box when the next shipment of track came in another new box. Realizing I was a little bold assuming I could take the plain empty box that Lionel originally shipped to the store, I apologized, but the male employee just angrily dropped it and let me keep the box. I imagine it's difficult running a local hobby shop in 2023, but I'm going to put in the effort to find some better ones. read more

Fantastic hobby shop. Alas, I am not into the "left side" of the store (RCs, etc.), but I am a nerd when it comes to plastic model kits. I love their selection --- everything from cars to planes to space exploration to sci-fi and more. In addition, I love shopping the hobby accessories aisles and seeing all the interesting tools and aids to make modeling easier. Staff is polite and helpful. Only nit I have is that they need to do a more frequent inventory of their modeling paints. How said when you want a Testor's Gloss White and they are out of stock. :( read more

What a unique hobby store. I've been to a few in traverse city and in smaller towns... But this one takes the cake! Kids AND adults can shop here and there's a team of knowledgeable staff that can answer inventory inquiries, assembly questions to repair. I'll be honest... I like to think when shopping local and in person, and therefore likely paying more than I would from an online retailer, I should get value from the in-person service and support. I found the support and service to be available, but not reliable or helpful. Initial quality issues with products weren't supported well, and then when I purchased replacement parts based on the recommendation of the employee, it made the problem much worse. I ended up having to deal directly with the manufacturer who is now correcting the issue, but I will be without my product for weeks, after just minutes of use. Bottom line, I suspect I could have got as good as service from a bot working for Mr. Bezos. I don't want this, nor do I suspect other hobbyist do, but this is another local store that will lose my support based on very poor customer service. read more

I'm such a nerd when it comes to all things mini's and this is my go to place to pickup new models. They have the biggest selection of mini cars, military craft, and trains. I first started out in the world of scale HO train's when my dad bought me a train set as a kid. My imagination ran wild from then on. I love stopping in and checking out the great selection this store carries. It seems that the Farmington Nankin is more based on the Hobby aspect and less hardware and building supplies like the Garden City one does. However, they both have a great selection, with the Farmington location having a lot more in the way of mini's. The Garden City location has more in the way of terrain and building supplies. Both great stores depending on what you are looking for. The staff is also some of the greatest people you will ever meet. They know there stuff! I love this place and whenever I have a little extra money I go straight here to see what's new and I always end up buying something. read more

Nankin Hardware has expanded their hobby offerings with a second store in the city of Farmington. Located on 9 Mile just east of Farmington Road, this store specializes exclusively in hobby items. Their original location in Westland on Ford Road is a hobby and hardware store. Lots of fun things to see here. Big selection of RC cars and aircraft. All kinds of plastic assembly models including aircraft, cars, ships from Tamyia, HobbyBoss, Hasegawa, AMT, Trumpeter, Revell and others. Supplies for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. They also have trains and slot cars. A well stocked finishing section (glues, paints, thinners) is at the center of the store. Airbrushes and other tools for hobbyists are also stocked. I didn't see anything for people who model figures. Sorry! Maybe I just missed it. I also couldn't locate any products from Flex-I-File which is my favorite supplier of sandpapers and adhesive accessories. One thing really lacking is a professional looking web site. That really needs some work. The store is large and really packed full of merchandise. The staff is friendly and helpful. The interior looks like a warehouse with high ceilings and institutional type lighting. It's not a cozy atmosphere. The aisles are narrow and it's a squeeze to get by another person when you're browsing. If you're a hobbyist and haven't had a chance to visit it's definitely worth your time to stop by. Getting back in to RC cars, and I've started making the rounds to local hobby shops. I had been to Nankin Hardware in Westland, since it's pretty close to my office, and their selection wasn't bad. But, it was very much a hardware store that also had a small hobby shop inside. Although Nankin Hobby isn't really close to my home or office, it isn't too far out of the way, so I made the trip out last week, and I'm so glad I did. Nankin Hobby is easily one of the nicest hobby shops I've been in. Everything is very well organized in its own section: scouting gear, slot cars, rockets, models, modeling paint / glue / tools, RC cars, RC helicopters, RC planes... RC cars seem to be their biggest draw, and all the big names are there -- though in line with what seems popular locally, Traxxas and Losi seem to rule the roost here. That's not to say I had any trouble getting Team Associated parts, though. And two of the guys working there were suggesting different hop ups on my Team Associated buggy, so the experience was pretty decent. Pricing wasn't bad. By and large, it was within a couple bucks over / under what you'd see online at Tower or A Main Hobbies. Maybe not quite as good as Dirtburners in Livonia, but the selection and staff make it worthwhile. One really disappointing facet: The products and stock status on their web site is separate from what's offered in the store. I learned that the hard way when I went to go pick up a servo. Another thing that stuck out, is they carry Ace branded items where practical (e.g. sandpaper, some tools) at Ace prices. So it was nice seeing that they're saving people a few bucks by carrying relevant items from their hardware store, instead of overly expensive factory branded gear. So, big time respect there. read more

I purchased a model kit from this store and after getting home I realized the scanner charged me more than the price tag on the item. Went back to the store and asked to be credited for the difference in price. The cashier refused to honor the stickier price telling me that the Michigan Scanner Law doesn't apply to independent stores; he told me that I had to pay the scanned price or he would refund my purchase. I should have left and checked the law (which I did later and found that he was wrong) but I was so frustrated that I took the refund and left. I'll never shop there again! read more

Such a ripoff. I purchased an 850 dollar rc car for my son for Christmas. It was defective. I took it back and they could not fix it. They took it apart and said the remote controller is bad. They would have to order one since they didn't have it. They had another one in the box but would not replace it. Ruined my son's Christmas. read more

Just wasted 20 minuets of lunch time here. Went in to purchase a Axial. After 10 minuets standing at RC Counter and 2 people passing me without asking me if I need help. Finally asked for assistance on model difference gentleman went around wall to ask someone else for assistance. All they did was say depends how I would use. Well since not willing to come from behind wall I talked through wall to them telling my intentions for use. Response was don't really matter which one i buy they will all fit my needs. I'm an RC airplane hobbyist. Mostly, I scratch build. When I first started shopping here, I found it difficult to find some of the parts I was looking for. They have improved over the years, keep things pretty well stocked. In this day and age, there are not many stores like this left. I am fortunate to live within 5 miles. Pricing is rarely out of line with Tower Hobbies. I've shopped at several hobby stores in the 15 years I've been into RC. They carry as much RC car, truck, boat, airplane, quad stuff as any place I've seen with maybe one exception. Overall, a really good store. read more

Nankin is a great store! I'm a plastic kit modeller and their selection is small but well chosen. Great options between ships, planes, cars, military, and sci-fi genres. Full selection of paints, tools, glues, brushes and other must haves for the serious modeller. Staff is very friendly & knowledgable and store is clean, organized, and well maintained. Would like to see a bigger selection of plastic kit aftermarket items such as Verlinden, Accurate Armor, and Eduard to provide one stop shopping when detailing or upgrading a project. Model train department really nice too and selection lends itself well to diorama constuction and finishing. A nice touch was the in store promotion of a Saturday Flea Market.
