Right there on the company iPad, that's handed to you by the guys who just fixed your expensive af water issue. Can't remember if it was 10% 15% 20%...or 15% 20% 25%. What I do remember is how freaking awkward it felt. When I go out to eat, get my hair done, or grab a coffee...I know these things are a part of an industry that relies on tips. When I have service guys over to my house (new homeowner, so it's more common than I'd like) I often cash tip a $20 or more depending on the work and time. But to be asked to tip 20% on $500 or $1000 dollars unexpectedly--do that math. Ugh. The guys were great and their work was solid. It's not on them for a crappy ending to the service call. If Great Lakes would have mentioned their tipping expectation in advance, like when I scheduled or when they sent a confirmation, it would have been a better experience. Sharing so you don't feel caught off guard the way I was.

I hired them two years in row for the exact same service each visit, but the invoice this year was $60.00 higher, compared to the previous year. They notice that a GFI (Ground Fault Circuit) plug was tripped. They flicked the switch and and the hot water heater fired up. They left in less than 15 minutes. I know there is a typical charge for a service call, but as I said I expected it to be fair. Unema sent an invoice for $135.00, which I believed to be an error. Before I called Unema, I check with a couple other local plumbers whose rates were less an $100.00. I called and asked if their rate was reasonable considering no real work was done. We had a large plumbing problem that caused multiple floods in our basement. It turned out that…read morethe old sewer line had roots growing through it. The pipe ran under a lot of landscaping including trees, shrubs, and perennials. Broekhuis Plumbing replaced the sewer line and managed to do it without destroying the majority of the landscaping above it. I was so impressed by his care and concern for all our landscape work. The pipe is in, no more problems in my basement, and my flowers are gorgeous! On top of all that he beat out our other quotes by a landslide.
