Located in a residential area. There's a small parking lot available and also plenty of street parking in the residential area. This is only park that has an operating city pool at the moment. The other pool at Barnes Park has been closed for a while. The pool is relatively small. The Manta Rays operate out of this facility. They also offer child and adult swim lessons in the summer. The park is nice. There are a lot of trees that provide shade. There's also an indoor gym on site for basketball. read more

The lifeguards are helpful with navigating the complicated locker rooms! They do swim tests for everyone to go to the deep end. This pool is open year round for lap swim. The only sad thing is that they don't offer swim lessons year round. read more

Brought the family here to celebrate a dear old friend's baby shower. They had to switch to this venue the morning of the event due to their city having poor planning and canceling their original venue last minute so they could host some politician's event. Yes, it was super annoying, but my friend did great trying to make the best of it. I have never been here before but when we parked by the gymnasium and walked to the open grass area on the other side of the pools, my first impression was how clean it was. I assume the hosts had a lot to do with this, but it looked clean everywhere. They did have outdoor bathrooms all the way on the other side of the park, but since they were hidden so far away, we had no idea they existed until we walked to the playground about an hour later. We also didn't use them so I don't know how clean they were, but if it was like the outside of the park, I'd guess they were clean too. The play sets were ok: they had swings, climbing structures, monkey bars and slides. I did notice the soft ground they had installed around the swings were dug up and large chunks were missing underneath them. It's probably from kids slamming their feet into it to slow the swings down but nonetheless should be repaired. There was only one bench there to sit and watch the kids play. So most parents were standing around. There should be more seating. One other knock was the grass was super long. It was like trudging through a swamp. Needs to be maintained better. But overall, the park was clean and it was a great day to spend outside in the sun. read more

Located next to Macy Intermediate School, this park is an asset to the community. We come by to take walks several times and we see people walking their dogs, children playing at the playground, and others coming to compete in swim, basketball, and tennis. People are generally friendly here. At night, there are street lights turned on. They have a farmers market nearby and we come check it out every summer. I hope they can expand this park at some point so that more people can come and get some fresh air. I took off one star because I would recommend coming here in the morning or afternoon only. At night, we see people parking in the parking lot for long periods of time so I'm not sure how safe it is. read more

I've got a 50+ year history with this park. Formerly known as Grandview Park, it was re-named as George Elder Memorial Park to honor one of our city's fallen police officers. It's changed much over the years. All for the good. A gym/community center was built next to the pool. My sons played in the city basketball & T-ball leagues there and also took karate lessons from Kageyama Sensei. The kiddie playground has been revamped. I had to laugh seeing that the lion water fountain is still there. It's non-functional and is missing a tooth, but keeping it around for nostalgia's sake is appreciated. It's a small neighborhood park. We attended a little kid's birthday party here, it was spacious and my friends rented the covered picnic area near the pool. That meant we were close to the restrooms and trashcans. I think the park overall should have more trashcans. read more

The park was decent. It's a shame that the city of LA -- I mean the state of California -- is so broke. There's absolutely no staff here during the day and only one person between 5pm - 8pm. This gym allows for three courts and that's good for league and anytime their is open open play between league times. For the most part it is kept up but it's decaying and prob needs an upgrade. All in all it is a good place to take the kids and enjoy family time that being at the park portion. read more

Pretty average park. I used to come here a lot a long time ago to play basketball. I liked their indoor courts compared to crappy outdoor courts that ruin shoes and balls. I remember the gym being in okay condition. Rim and nets were decent. Parking was a bit of hassle since it got crowded sometimes. I haven't been here since I got my gym membership though! read more

I've been playing basketball here since I was in 8th grade (a LONG time ago). The gym is great, the net's never ripped, but the floor is either a hit or miss. Sometimes it's cleaned and ready to go, and other times I feel like I'm ice skating. Also, parking can get really hectic sometimes, but there's a ton of street parking. 4 star strictly because the floor quality is so unpredictable. All in all, great park. As far as parks go, this is serviceable. Located a block east of Garvey on Elmgate, it's a neighborhood park with indoor basketball courts, an indoor swimming pool, 4 tennis courts, and a children's playground (swings, slides) on a bed of sand. The tennis courts are in satisfactory condition. Nets are a bit tattered but, as of this writing at least, balls won't fly through. They are also taut enough, and are at or near regulation height. Monterey Park's Park and Recreation reserves these courts (as well as the ones at Barnes Park) for city sanctioned lessons during select week nights. My biggest gripe: dim, yellow lights aren't great for nighttime tennis. The basketball courts, perhaps in keeping with the tennis courts, are also dimly lit yellow; however, because they're indoors, appear brighter. A word of caution: the basketball facilities are used extensively by organized team sports so be ready to find another location if these courts are booked! As for the children's playground, this park is one of a few that still has metal slides and play sets. While I appreciate not getting the same shock treatment as I do with plastic slides, sun-heated playground equipment is no walk in the park either. Haha. read more

While it may be considered a park, it's mainly an open area with old tennis courts and a busted up concrete path with a stand alone bathroom. I walked my dog here and found empty beer cans and discarded blunt wrap packages (google the term, but you don't have to be a rapper to know that those are) around the outer edges of this place. The parking lot serves as overflow from the school next door, in the morning the hoards of cars coming in and out ruins whatever tranquility this place has. read more

I come here for some outdoor pick up with my buddies. The courts are pretty bad. I mean, they are slick and the dark backboards don't help either. If you can deal with that, then it's a great place to play. There's usually a few people around so you can either join or start up your own. Plenty of courts to go around. i live around the block and have been to this park since i was in middle school at Macy. The park is spacious with some tennis courts, swings, grass and trees. the outdoor basketball courts is actually on the middle school grounds. the park's swimming pool is pretty old and beat up. i havent been here in a while but from what i remember, it was beat up. during the summertime, you could go swimming for like a dollar. im not sure if its still at that price either. also, the indoor basketball court is decent. there are certain parts of the floor that seem hollow (it probably isnt but when you bounce it on these spots, it sounds different and your ball doesnt bounce the same) also, late at night, cops drive by the parking lot so be careful. read more

I brought my three kids (12, 10, 2) to play at the newly renovated playground area and I was disappointed in the already dilapidated state of the jungle gym. I remember when it was being rebuilt during late April of this year and it took about a month and a half to complete. What looked like it had a lot of promise as a new play area for the community, had already been damaged by savage children. They didn't even put in toddler swings for the younger kids and the play areas aren't all that separate from eachother so if you want to bring a young child, be prepared to hover like crazy. The older kids that were playing here were ok until they started running around like crazy and practically knocked over my toddler and me as we were navigating the different activities she was interested in. The only other improvement to this area besides the soft surface under the play area, is that there is more than one bench to sit at. In the future, I would prefer going to another park with less ghetto factor. read more
