Had to wait for two and a half months for my CD player to be repaired. George Meyer thought they had ordered a part but they had not. I had to call them seven times and their response was that they were waiting for the part - that they had never ordered. Finally I had to contact the manufacturer to find out what had happened - or in this case had not happened. When I went in to pick up the CD player there was no apology for the delay and George Meyer staff kept insisting that there was a delay on the part of the manufacturer. I showed them the manufacturer' email to me and they didn't even bother to apologize. I politely requested a discount and after a lot of back and forth they discounted a pitiful amount from the bill. In sum George Meyer has no quality control, takes no responsibility for their (non) actions, and wouldn't know an apology even in the most egregious situation where they clearly dropped the ball. read more

I have had a long term 5 Star relationship with george meyer AV. Over this time i have had vintage Sanyo, and Luxman receivers and amplifiers refurbished as well as Pioneer and Dual turntables and a Nakamichi Dragon tape deck. Over the most recent 5+ years they have refurbished a NAIM vintage audiophile system with 6 mono 135 Amps and a 52 preamp and power supply. All the work was done with outstanding attention to detail and care. Only the highest quality components were used and both Paul and Morris have provided wonderful service and great communication throughout. I have recommended Morris and team to my fellow Hi-Fi enthusiasts over and over with outstanding results time and time again!!! I would be honored to be a customer reference for Morris and Paul. Brought in my 20 year old non functioning Rotel Surround sound receiver and amplifier that was in storage for the last 8 years. The technician determined that the capacitors were shot from age and non use. They replaced all the capacitors and the system is working like new again. Not a cheap repair but a quarter of the cost to purchase a new comparable system. About a month later a called and spoke to a technician asking for advice about connecting new HDMI components (cable box and DVD player) to my older non HDMI system. They explained a simple work around that works just fine. I will use George Meyer again if needed. read more

I see a lot of positive reviews. Sadly, I am not going to provide another. Here is my specific experience which related to taking in a Thorens Turntable that had signal flow issues. While I expected it might take a while to hear back I got a call the next day. That was a great start. It was the owner Morris who listed a litany of alleged issues. He told me he was going to have to replace RCA cables (OK, it's old - I approve), repair the headshell (no specifics...wiring?), replace the cartridge with another because mine was "old") and clean everything (OK, that's fine). I suggested that maybe I should just buy a new head shell rather than repair it because it would cost the same. George, (perhaps he was a manager?) immediately went off at me big time on the phone and screamed out to somebody "Stop work on the Thorens." It was ridiculous. I told him I didn't want him to replace my cartridge with his choice because it is a very personal choice. More to the point I very specifically didn't want what he was going to use. I didn't want to argue with him about the fact that my cartridge is considered FAR superior to what he was going to replace it with. I actually posed the question in a Facebook audiophile forum about their thoughts on the comparison. Out of more than a HUNDRED replies, only TWO - yes TWO -felt the suggested replacement was of comparable quality. (Sure, maybe replace the stylus, but the cartridge?) Anyway, after calming him after having the audacity to understand his diagnosis they proceeded work. I told him I would take the time to research what I wanted to do with the cartridge/stylus. Truth is I felt bullied and abused. Next day I get a bill for $560 (included the $80 bench fee for analyzing and about $150 in parts. I was told it would be totally gone over and serviced. When I picked it up I asked the Turntable technician, an EXCEPTIONALLY curmudgeonly and rude person who wouldn't suffer even the most rudimentary enquiries about why he had any particular views. I took it home and noticed the stylus and arm, which he had disassembled and worked on, had not been at all set up. They had charged me for two and half hours of labor and hadn't even set the turntable up before notifying me to pick it up. And so I had to take it back. The TT tech told me "you said you would be replacing the cartridge". I said "yes, in my own good time." Mind, you, they still changed me for setup time. He eventually, reluctantly agreed to set it up. No apology for the inconvenience of me having to return. Much more of an "ugh whatever" attitude. Then had to wait 3 business days to get it back to finish the job. No big deal. Again, TT technician whined about how he would have to GRIND down the tonearm rest if I wanted it lower. GRIND IT DOWN. Pretty sure GRINDING IT DOWN isn't on Thoren's recommended solutions for tone arm adjustment. Not a man I want to ever touch my beautiful machine again. Output from the TT is lower than when I left it with them. It might be the replacement wires they provided. Who knows? I asked if during the alleged "full service" he had checked all the caps, and parts and the technician said "No, if it ain't broke don't mess with it." So, not really sure what they did for their $250 service fee aside from lubricate the motor, clean connections and do a (VERY NICE) job of making the plinth look great. Finally, while there I saw the record the technician was using to test whatever he was working on. A VERY badly scratched and abused album that was handled like a dinner plate. Alarming that he had the audacity to critique my cartridge when he was listening to it with a record that would barely be worthy of Goodwill condition. Is that what they do evaluation of a cartridge - especially when using a $3K plus stylus/cartridge combo? Who knows? The support staff that received the equipment (Nels and Simba in particular) could not have been nicer. The TT tech and the owner are both terribly arrogant, rude, impatient and will not stand any kind of nuanced conversation without a fair bit of resentment. They clearly have no patience for what customers think. I felt like an inconvenience the second I didn't bow to their opinion. They make you feel like they have more than enough work so love it or leave it. Fair enough. I'll leave it. Forever. A solid one star thumbs down. By the way, the exhausted cartridge they decided was too old? Still going strong and after a stylus change, sounding lovely. read more

This is one of the finest av shops I've ever encountered- I picked up a used Proceed AMP 5 (which I found out upon pick-up is the make/model they use as their in-house reference for testing repaired equipment. I also picked-up my first turntable and had an intention of buying something way out of my league and they refused to let me do so. They literally saved this vinyl newbie from himself, rather than make a sale. What I went home with made my old system sing like it never before has. I haven't even critically listened to the new amp yet. I wouldn't even give these scam artists one star if I could do it. I took a vintage Reel to Reel Deck, an Akai GX-747dbx tape deck that I've owned for 35 years to this company for a inspection and repair in June 2020 specifically of the L/R Tape tension arm mechanisms that needs to park in the down position when no tape is detected. ONE MONTH later in July 2020 they emailed me that the tape deck was ready so I picked it up, got it back home and they didn't fix the problem so I took it back and AFTER WAITING over 6 MONTHS, and after picking it up again in January 2021 the problem STILL isn't fixed. I was willing to be patient and wait OVER 6 MONTHS due to the COVID Pandemic and the problem of locating parts for a tape deck that's over 35 years old but they told me that had the necessary pats and could fix the problem. I even provided them with the Service manual myself yet after ALL THIS TIME and numerous phone calls and trips over there to inquire about the status of the repair THEY DIDN'T FIX ANYTHING yet they charged me $670 just to change some blown capacitors. I suggest If you have a vintage Audio/Video component that you want fixed you DO NOT go to this place unless you want to go through what I went through and pay a lot of money for NOTHING REVIEW UPDATE. GEORGE MYER AV refunded my money but that doesn't change the fact that they LIED TO ME for over 7 months regarding to repair of my Reel to Reel tape deck saying that they were going to repair it but apparently never had any attention of repairing it. 7 MONTHS is along time to wait for NOTHING which leads me to wonders if they ever did any repairs at all IF YOU HAVE any vintage electronics that you cherish I highly suggest that you DO NOT go to George Myers. A friend recommended GMAV as another friend gifted me some beautiful speakers and amp from the 70's. The volume on the amp was cutting in and out and one of the woofers needed new foam. Brought both to GMAV. Received a quote, picked up and enjoying the great sounds. I have no idea if price was low, medium or high. All I know is that I am enjoying both repairs with great sounds. Bonus, Morris the owner is old school and could sell you the Brooklyn Bridge. Entertaining and knowledgeable and I will be back if I need any other repairs of classic audio equipment. read more

I have a Alpine S630 disc changer seeking to have repaired the cartridge gets stuck in unit & the disc don't play

Had a poor experience. Paid $240 for them to look at 2 x CDJ2000 and a mixer that had some liquid spilled on it. It took a month and me calling 4 times to finally get a quote. The quote came out to ~$1700 which is almost what I paid for the equipment several years ago (it was used). The mixer repair cost was more than the unit is brand new. When I called to get some clarification on the cost, they couldn't tell me why it was so expensive. I ended up taking the equipment to Electro Tech in Glendale. Jorge was extremely nice, didn't charge me to look at the equipment and the final repair cost came out to ~$600. There are 2 pioneer shops in SoCal. I do not recommend this one. Their repair cost is insanely high. read more

We are "only" giving this establishment 5 stars as that is the upper limit available. We brought them 2 NAD 2200 amplifiers that had not been serviced since they were bought several decades ago. While the service cycle requires patience, it was well worth the month it took. If memory serves us, they now 'sound' better than when new. "Joe", the tech who worked on our equipment, not only expertly repaired the items, but tutored me on how to test the other components and then what was needed at our end to prevent the reoccurrence of the failures. Be prepared for 'sticker shock' as to the estimate for repair, but in our opinion the result was well worth the cost. We would recommend GMAV without reservation to any audiophile who treasures their rig. read more

I've had multiple pieces repaired here. Complete restorations of a McIntosh mc240, marantz 2270 and a way beat up McIntosh mx110z. Also a repair of a fisher 800c. Yeah, I've spent some cash here. That being said, the results have always been exceptional. I would not hesitate to bring a cherished piece of stereo equipment to these guys for anything that needs attention. I called George Meyer AV several times to check on the status of my audio gear that was there for repair. Each time I called, they said they would call me back within a day. They never called me back. Finally, five months after I left my gear there, during my last call, they told me my gear was done. I went there to pick up my gear, and they didn't charge me anything beyond the initial inspection fee from when I first left my gear there. I asked why there was no additional charge, and the woman who did the paperwork said she didn't know. I took my gear home and found that it still didn't work. So after 5 months, George Meyer AV didn't do anything to my gear. They probably just got tired of me calling. read more

I couldn't get my old Wadia 302 CD player to quit skipping, so I took it in to George Meyer. I got it back in a few weeks, sounding better than I remember, especially in the bass. $800, but dirt cheap for a new sounding Wadia. In the meantime, I found a Krell KSA 50S on sale and asked Morris about it. He advised against it, fearing the capacitors would have rotted. I got it on approval, and sure enough, he was right. He saved me a bundle compared to the $80 he charged for the diagnosis. These guys aren't cheap, but your gear isn't either if you're looking for repairs. And there's usually a 2-3 week turnaround, but that's an endorsement in my book. read more

My review for George Meyer is long overdue. I met Morris Polanski and his friendly staff about five years ago when I searched for service centers who were authorized and experienced in fixing Marantz products. It was a Marantz AV8801 home theater processor in which the volume control was malfunctioning. Upon picking up this unit, I was impressed with the speed at which they had the unit repaired correctly, and the price was very reasonable. Since then, I have trusted all my repair needs with George Meyer. My next request was to restore my recently deceased father's Marantz 2252B receiver. This beautiful piece of machinery sounded like it was on my last legs and I was desperately longing to relive my childhood memories listening to classics on this receiver. After a large set of capacitors were replaced (old ones returned to me), the receiver was restored in a condition that sounded better than new! I next requested that they restore my father's Dual turntable to a working condition. Unfortunately, the fact that this item was so old posed a technical challenge in sourcing replacement parts. But thanks to some wizardry from Don, one of his technician specializing in turntables, the turntable was finally back to working condition. My third restoration project that I trusted George Meyer with was a TEAC A2300 reel to reel recorder/player. Again, this antique posed a challenge in finding parts for it. Morris warned me early on that this repair could take a while, but I was patient, as I wanted the unit to be fixed right. However, after many months, I just decided that I would just retrieve the item as is. The comment I must make here is that Morris is a man of integrity and never charge extra if the job is not done perfectly. Although I believed they worked on restoring and calibrating the player in good faith, I was never charged for the labor and parts that they incurred. This was also the case with the turntable, where I did bring the unit back for customized repairs by Don. Finally, my most recent experience involved a request to tune up my Marantz receiver. It was about 3 years since it last visited their shop, and I was surely expecting to pay a small fee for resolving some minor issues. However, his technician Juan cleaned it up promptly, and returned the unit to me with no charges incurred. This surprised me, and again bolstered my trust in their services. On another unrelated note to repairs, it would be worth checking out their inventory of used items. Many of the items are very high quality audiophile machines that sell for reasonable prices. Unlike getting a unit from a marketplace such as Audiogon, you can be assured that the unit would be vetted after being refurbished by their technicians. I picked up a Rotel tape player from them, and have really appreciated the quality of the build on that machine. read more

I called about my nearly 50 year old Marantz 1060 amplifier for a service diagnosis. When I told Morris that I was the original owner, he said to come in immediately. After all of these years, the unit was found to have a host of problems. I ok'd the service, and the repair was done with lightning speed. I left with the newly-repaired 1060, and a bag filled with old, damaged parts. It now sounds its amazing self again, and I can't thank the entire team at George Meyer enough! COMPLETELY TOTALLY INCOMPETENT - OR LACKING MINIMAL INTEGRITY! I wanted to be fair after all George Meyer's has been around for awhile and if the other reviews are honest some have had a good experience, just was not so in my case. I brought in a Sony CD P 35 player in August 2020, it had been in storage for a decade and the only known problem was tray belt was broken. $80 to diagnose which would be applied to any repair cost providing I allow them to repair otherwise $80 forfeited - fair enough Two months later belt and the laser replaced (additional $435.25) I was told the technician noted minor CD skipping and it was their opinion it was due to a faulty laser - all good or maybe not. I took possession of the machine and within one hour of play CD skipped. Back to George Meyer's - 60 more days and now spindle motor was the culprit and it needed to be replaced . Again picked up the player and within one hour CD's were skipping. Again back to George Meyer this was in December 2020 and it is now July 2021. In June 2021 had a discussion with George Meyers and discovered that for the past 6 months they had been looking for another laser but had not been able to find one (wait a minute didn't we already replace the laser back in October 2020 with the promise that the CD player was fixed). So now we want to replace the faulty laser that had been previously installed by George Meyers with yet another laser? Hmmmmm my confidence is fading seems like we are just guessing, randomly replacing parts, and not proofing their work before returning the item to the customer. At this point I requested, and two weeks later demanded a refund and to George Meyers credit they eventually refunded $435.25 but not the $80. I thought the $80 would go towards the cost of the repair if I allowed them to repair the machine, which I did, is it my fault they could not repair the machine? I get it if originally they diagnosed the problem and told me they could not fix it I would be out the $80. However you would think that it would just be good business practice/customer relations in this type of situation to refund everything considering the rabbit hole they took me down. Through this 11 month experience I only received two phone calls from George Meyers, each one was to pick up my supposedly repaired machine, all other conversations where initiated by me, not very professionally run company. UPDATE - 8/7/2021 - I picked up my Sony CD P 35 this week (I did not want to abandon the machine so George Meyer's could cannibalize it for parts). Before discarding the machine I hooked it back up and the CD drawer does not open nor will it play any CD, So it appears that George Meyers refunded my money after 11 months but they also seemed to have removed the parts they installed (fair enough) however they didn't seem to put my old parts back in which puts the machine in worse condition than it originally was! Having said all this here is my take away - from now on as my antique equipment fails I will simply replace it. I will never go back to Gorge Meyer's AV. Either something has recently changed with their business or I was just too insignificant of a job to deal with, especially after they had been paid and any additional work was at their expense. read more

I wanted to get my Martin Logan CLS I speakers' panels replaced and arranged to drop them off at George Meyer AV, the local factory authorized repair shop. Morris the manager was very cordial and made me feel confident that the ML factory would be able to do the repaneling. The factory took about 8 months to do the manufacturing of new panels. When I finally got the newly repaneled speakers home and hooked up to my system which includes a PS equipment upfrontand the Sanders Sound Magtech amp which is designed for electrostatics. They were sounding very good until one speaker began arcing about 40 minutes into playing. I had to take them back for Joe, the repair technician, to diagnose the problem. He cleaned up the circuit boards and wiring harnesses and changed some resistors and caps to the speakers. I came in to hear the speakers after the mods and at lower volumes the speakers seemed fine but the problem speaker began to arc when I asked to play it at a louder level. Confident that it was a malfunctioning panel, Joe called ML that day to order a new panel to be built. When the second new panel arrived, I was finally now able to have two fully functional speakers in my system and hear what these speakers could do. This is now all totaled about 1 year after I first brought the speakers in for repairs. During this time I had my dynamic speakers, LSA 20 Statements, subbing for the CLSs, so I was not without music. Was this long process worth it? Yes. These speakers that I had first heard 34 years ago still to this day do things that very few speakers can do. I would have to spend over 4 times their cost to get CLXs, Martin Logan's closest model to them. If you are in Los Angeles and need audio repairs, I would highly recommend George Meyer AV and especially technician Joe. His dogged determination got me through a bit of frustration and enabled me to finally achieve my dream audio system. read more

He apologized for the situation and explained everything to me in a friendly manner. The reviews for this place seem to fall into two categories: raving and raging. Sadly, I fall into the second category. They charged me over $700 to repair my Marantz receiver, promising me it would sound good as new. I waited months, then when I finally brought it home it had the same problem (intermittent static and distortion in one channel). I took it back to them, and waited months again for them to fix it. They never contacted me. I always had to call them and ask for an update and always got a generic "we are working on it." Finally, when I told them I was fed up, they said to come get it because they found no problems with it, but I seriously doubt they worked very hard to diagnose anything because when I brought it home again the second time it took less than a day for the same problem to manifest again. Now I'm looking for someone else to fix my receiver, because these guys are either not interested or competent to do it. read more

Ok, people. If you're reading this, you're browsing the page of the best hifi repair shop in the country. I am an audio installer, and consultant, in the live sound industry, but George Meyer is where I go for hifi. I have brought 20 pieces to Morris and the team, and not one of them has had to come back. When you call Mcintosh... they say "TAKE IT TO GEORGE MEYER." The first time I went there, I was just a kid with my first Mcintosh piece of equipment. Morris didn't care about that... and took time out of his 24/7 ringing phone to show me around.. ask me what I do in audio.. demo speakers for me.. and make me feel like I belonged!!! Who does that anymore?? (Especially with a young client who seemingly doesn't pose as a potential lucrative source) Now, 20 repair jobs later, I know there's no one who does what they do. Everyone who works there on units is a specialist in their field. They have a Mcintosh guy. They have a vintage guy. They have a home theatre guy. THEY'VE GOT A GUY FOR EVERYTHING. It's a freaken operation. I've noticed a couple of "negative" reviews in here saying it's "costly." Show me who else is doing this kind of work, who is endorsed by all major hifi brands, and who backs up their work 100% if ANYTHING goes wrong. Nothing's gone wrong for me, but I've witnessed Morris take a unit back immediately because a pot was "scratchy," CLEAR the bench of an active repair, and clean the pot right infront of the client, then put it in the clients car with no charge. You just can't beat that; you pay for what you get. Why am I sitting at "Rock & Brews" typing this novel?? Because I've been searching for a company like this for a long time, and I hope you get the same joy out of the peace of mind you get when getting a rebuilt unit back from them. They do good work, but initially I ONLY wanted them to replace the glass in a McIntosh amp. I decided to bring in a Marantz at the same time to get looked at. The Marantz ended up needing a ton of work which cost more than the amp is worth (that's fine, I probably won't need to bring it in for another 10 years). But I asked them if they could replace some bulbs... that quote came out to like 600 dollars, new velum, new this, new that... I finally said forget it. They ended up popping in some new bulbs while it was apart. Surprisingly. This saga could take a very long time, so I'll try and make the Mac part short. The Mac quote ended up being like 1500 dollars for an overhaul even though I only wanted the glass replaced... even that they didn't want to do because the glass I provided wasn't from them. I said I couldn't afford that at the moment, can you just put in the glass. I figured this would be like an 80 dollar thing, I could do it myself but just wanted it done by professionals. The quote came back at a few hundred dollars because it was not only replacing the glass but they would do this and that. I actually gave the go ahead, because I was sick of dealing with them and just wanted my shit back... but then thought this is ridiculous. I told them to cancel it and I just wanted to pick up my item. The whole experience was a big rigamarole and everything seemed to be an up-sale. If you have money and just want your nice stuff repaired. Then ya, they do good work. But just trying to get a simple thing repaired at a reasonable price... forget about it. read more

I brought my Pro-Ject turntable in for a new bearing and cartridge upgrade. I was told when I picked the turntable up, that the down-force had been adjusted to proper weight for the new Ortofon Blue 2M cartridge. When i got it home, the sound was very thin and distorted. I noticed that the counterweight was attached to the tonearm by a thread, it was literally hanging off the back and the counterweight assembly was barely still threaded to the tonearm at all. So I bought a down-force gauge to see where we were at with the down force and - YES, it was set to the proper weight for the new cartridge, BUT as it turns out, the existing counterweight was not heavy enough to be properly positioned for the new cartridge (which George Meyer AV furnished). A rep from Pro-Ject verified that I need a 75g counterweight to properly work with that cartridge. I bought the new counterweight and the tonearm is once again properly assembled. Distortion is reduced substantially - but not gone. Down-force is exactly where it is supposed to be, so I wonder if the cartridge is either faulty or was not properly installed. UPDATE - They contacted me and offered to take a look at the turntable to see what the trouble was. The made a small adjustment to the overhand (cartridge position). Other than that, everything checked out fine. They played a Steely Dan record through their system to test the turntable and it sounded fine. I got it home and it does sound better. Any distortion at this point is either the tube preamp or the receiver. read more

Complimentary because you didn't refurbish my receiver as promised!!! I just had Homeboy Industries restore the same receiver since you didn't do a proper restoration. They told me whoever did it last only replaced half of the components. They charged me 350 bucks like you did but I didn't have to bring it back because they actually did the job I paid them to do. I thought I found a great local electronics repair shop. I brought in a Sony 65 inch on June 25 for repair because it would not turn on. Diagnostic fee was $135. After a few weeks I called because I had not heard from them. I was told the repair would be approximately $800. I went ahead with the repair and two weeks later the tv was ready. I went to the shop paid the invoice and they loaded the tv in my car. When I got home there was a crack on the inside not the exterior glass. The picture was also showing ghosted images. I called and reported the issue. I said I did not see the tv on at the shop so I could not be sure if it was damaged there or when moving the tv to the car or into the house. I was very careful to hold the tv at the edges with my son when moving it. The response I received was that we always verify the picture and the tech saw it was working. I asked what can be done and they said to send an email. I sent the email and the response was basically they were not at fault. Ok, regardless of fault, I have a broken tv. I later researched and removed and reconnected the T-Con board as suggested on some forums. The picture improved dramatically. I still had a little crack showing on the right side but obviously if they had seen the picture after the repair they would have seen what I saw when I brought it home. The second picture shows after a disconnected and reconnected the T-con board. I told them this and said that at least they could have quoted me to fix the picture issue but I did not get a response.
