I was in need for a servicing on a pair of Technics SL-1210M5G Grandmaster Flash special edition turntables. My inquiry was responded to quickly and professionally. They offered to remove the grounds from them for me for a modest addition. I was taken aback because I never even thought I could remove something I hated as much as the ground . I remember Bob and the absolute legendary LA institution he founded, Street Sounds, from my days as a DJ in the late 80s and early 90s. In those days he was always low key behind the counter. Street Sounds came at a time when vinyl was soon to be on its way out, but Bob somehow managed to have the best dance music vinyl (and other genres too) anywhere on the West Coast. It was worth the 45 minute drive. Walking in there on any given day was like being present in a pre-internet who's who of DJ culture. The kid who did Moontribe events worked there as a dance music buyer. I even ran into my own hometown hero, Rob Harris (RIP) one time, when he was the most in-demand DJ in LA... Street Sounds was THE PLACE to get dance music, and just like the T-shirt (which I must still have somewhere) said, SERIOUS DANCE MUSIC FOR SERIOUS DJs. This seriousness continues today, with Bob's DJ Equipment repair service. I had a 1200 that had the notorious frozen height adjustment ring beloved but needing love, and another 'audiophile' shop was so obtuse about their approach that all they could tell me -- an in HOUR LONG consultation -- is that it was going to take hours, and would cost so much that it came down to a question of whether it was even worth the investment. ($600? more? I'm still not sure) The other option was one of those shops known for exorbitant prices and widlly sliding turnaround times. I'm not the kind to take that BS, and so enter Yelp, enter Bob. Bob, the man. I recognized the name, he answered the phone, and let me know I could bring my deck by at any time. He tuned up my 1200, fixed the frozen height ring, removed the ground wire, and replaced the dead pop-up lamp with a bright white LED. No BS, no hassle, a reasonable price, and it was done in a few days. Good as new. I'll bring another pair to him in the near future. I picked up a set of Technics 1200 mk2s off of craigslist and was having some small issues with the pitch shifters. I had reached out to some other repair places before contacting Bob. I called him on Thursday and had an appointment to drop my decks off on Saturday morning. After a quick consultation, he suggested a tune up and internal grounding; while also saying he'd see if he could find the issues with my pitch sliders. Saturday afternoon he called me back saying that he couldn't find any issues, and that he thinks I just needed a tune up. I picked my decks up on Monday morning, and they've been working great, and I haven't seen the issues since I got them. When my Pioneer Mixer's effects knob went caput, I needed a good repair guy so I called a local guy in South Orange County and he couldn't give me a quote and said it would take up to 4-6 weeks to repair my mixer. Of course a DJ can't live that long without his most important piece of equipment so I started asking my friends. I heard about Bob at Street Sounds through a good DJ friend of mine. My friend gave him my info and Bob reached out through social media, we exchanged info, and Bob called me, instead of the other way around (amazing!). I had to drive 1.5 hours from Laguna Niguel to Beverly Hills to drop off my mixer. Bob was courteous, thoughtful and said he would call to let me know the issue and gave me an estimate. I received a call by the time I got home and he said he would have it fixed in a few days (great). About 24 hours later he called to say it was all done, ready to pick up!! LEGEND!! I was beyond impressed and wasn't even ready to pick up until a few days later. I happily drove back up to Beverly Hills and Bob had my mixer ready to go. Bob gave them both a full tune up, internally grounded both, replaced all the oem lights (half of which were burnt out) with really nice white LEDs and replaced the rca cable on one deck. They seriously play like butter now and with the internal grounding they have never sounded better. Honestly in my early years I didn't treat these as nice as I should have and they were crazy dirty, bob gave them back in white napkin condition, you could eat off of them! He's super fair, reasonably priced and a straight up dude. If you got decks that need some work, hit him up. I bought an old sony tc-353d reel to reel tape deck on ebay, and of course it comes in the mail and barely even turns on. Man talk about coming thru in the clutch! I was having issues with my Pioneer DJM-400 mixer and took it to my normal repair guy (let's just say he had my mixer from the end of February to about Monday April 2nd). I reached out to Bob to give all 3 of my Technics 1200 M3D's a once-over and to fix a few issues with them before mounting them in a (hopefully) permanent install. After giving him a call and explaining what I needed he told me to come by same day or to call him later in the week if I wasn't quite ready. We arranged a meeting at his home for a few days later (NOTE: He's no longer located on Melrose, and mentioned that Yelp keeps resetting the address to the old Street Sounds shop). I drove up to Bob's place and gave him a call when I had arrived. Parking is a bit tight in the area (read the signs!) so he had me park right in front while he gave each deck a look and provided me with his initial recommendations. I knew one deck needed a pop up light replacement, and one needed a pitch replacement. Bob also checked the RCA's, ground wires, and the tonearm assembly and then gave me his estimate on the cost for everything. He told me he would call me within 24 hours once the decks were disassembled to give me a firm cost before performing any work. I got the call and confirmed the repairs (I opted for internal grounding on all 3 decks, and a tune up/calibration on them as well) and Bob got to work! The repairs were done next day and I picked them up and chatted a bit about the history of the shop and clubs in LA (I'm a native and used to visit the shop weekly for my vinyl fix). I got the decks home and they are as good as new! Bob is very honest, and will tell you what needs done, what you might want to have done for future maintenance, as well as any upgrades that are available. I had a speaker fall on one of my technic 1200s, bending the tone arm which made the needle skip. I was looking at $700 to buy a used 1200 from Amazon. (The new 1200s are like 1-2 grand). Bob took one afternoon to diagnose; the he fixed my arm, installed a new light, did the internal ground, plus cleaned the electronics for only $250. This is a review of the repair aspect of Street Sounds. They offer vinyl records as well as merchandise and even a DJ school. I wasn't there shopping for records or shirts I just had my turntables serviced. I was recommended to go to Street Sounds, by a friend, for some recent trouble I've had with my pair of Technics 1200 turntables. Being a LA resident my entire life, I must've been past Street Sounds millions of times going up and down Melrose. Upon arrival, my initial thoughts were that of a store that just sells shirts and records. It doesn't really have the feel of a repair shop. It looks like a vintage record store full of posters and autographs of famous people and shirts and even a nice but small collection of vinyl records for sale. I spoke to Bob, the only employee in the store about my recent RCA cable woes. After hearing the problem, he suggested that I just go ahead and replace the cable. He suggested I replace the cable with the gold RCA cable instead of the factory cable, as it transmits a better signal equaling better sound quality. He also recommended I tuneup the turntable, calibrate the tonearm, and I asked if he could internally ground the turntable. He gave me a really fair price for what seemed like a good amount of work, and to top it off, he said he'd be done in a day! Too good to be true right? Sure enough I get a ring the next day to pick the turntable up. I go home to give it a test run, and it was running in better shape than before! He was absolutely right about the RCA cable. Serato picked up the signal nice and clear, no buzzing or popping. I liked the service so much, I had him do the same for my other turntable even though it was in perfect working condition. I experienced the same results! Quick turnaround, excellent service equaling two great sounding, well tuned turntables for a great price! For all my turntable needs I now have a new home.
