A bit of ambivalence concerning this particular cemetery...not for any objective reasons, really, but rather subjective, and personal. So far as I know, my maternal grandfather was the first to be buried here, and he died years before I was born. So I have early memories of coming here with my mother, sister and grandmother to visit the grave (my mother and grandmother are now buried here themselves). I remember my mother saying there were plots here for all of us, and my sister, with an odd nonchalance that I guess must be typical of the very young, said, "Wow, so I have a grave waiting for me!" And I guess I do too. My mother is buried here now, both sets of grandparents, my father's best friend, my cousin, a great uncle, and assuredly others with some connection to me. In all probability, this is where I'll be buried when I die (not to be morbid, but it is what it is). And...this isn't where I'd necessarily choose to be buried. Not for any objective reason, but just because...well, who knows? Although...if you're non-religious...dead is dead, and it doesn't really matter where they bury you, does it? And if you're religious...the body is just a shell, the spirit has left to a hopefully better realm, and it doesn't really matter where they bury you, does it? I have to confess that I've never been a fan of the name "George Washington" for a cemetery. Not that I'm unpatriotic, or feel that Washington wasn't one of our great Presidents, but it just seems odd naming a cemetery after a statesman/politician. The cemetery is non denominational, so a religious name isn't in order, but how about "Willow Grove," or "Whispering Pine Acres," or "Paramus Memorial Park," or something similar? I mean, where do they bury departed prisoners, criminals, felons and murderers--- "Richard Nixon Memorial Park"? Not to sound as if I'm mocking or being disrespectful, but it's not something I've ever really been comfortable about. There's a large statue of Washington on the grounds, and a painting of him in the cemetery office (as well as a bust of him behind the desk in the office). You'd think Washington was buried here, but he's not. Paramus as a location has little of beauty about it, but the cemetery itself is peaceful, serene, and...might as well admit it...even beautiful. There are some unique, picturesque statues and buildings located about the grounds (not many, but they're tastefully and artistically done). One statue (or metallic sculpture) is of a boy or young man playing a musical instrument; the other is of a young lady (or girl) with her arms extended upward in joy, birds flying about her...is her joy at the prospect of Heaven? Eternal life? Nirvana? Standing in the center of the cemetery like a beacon is a tall, thin building with a star, or something resembling a star, at the very top. It's been there since I can remember, and I'm not sure what it is or what its purpose is, but it does make a striking impression...always has. I needed to find 2 grave locations here recently, and the people in the office were pleasant and helpful, providing me with a map and specific instructions about where those I sought were buried. I still had some trouble locating them (I had a general idea of where they were, but its been a few years since I was last here), but the cemetery workers were actually very helpful to me, going out of their way to render aid, without being asked. I knew one guy I worked with who some years ago complained to me that the grave of his parents, who are buried here, was always overgrown and unkempt. I must confess that it didn't please me that the grave of my paternal grandparents was under a half foot of water, but you have to be realistic about these things, I think. When conditions improve, I'm sure the proper maintenance will be done. It's a large cemetery, not new, and everyone here seems as conscientious as can reasonably be expected. Just my opinion, some may disagree, but I'm the one writing the review. If I have a complaint, it's that the roads are really too narrow to comfortably navigate, but I don't know that that sort of complaint can be applied just to this cemetery. It seems intrinsic to any cemetery built many decades ago. There are some famous people buried here-- Luther Vandross, one of the Isley Brothers, and Thomas Eboli, one time boss of the Genovese Mafia Family who was shot down coming out of the Brooklyn apartment of his mistress in 1972 (obviously, they didn't bury him at "Richard Nixon Memorial Acres"). Also buried here is the family of Harry Delaroach Jr., a maladjusted, homicidal geek who fatally shot his father, mother, and 2 brothers in 1976 because his father was sending him back to military school (you wonder why he didn't consider just running away?). Objectively speaking, it's a nice cemetery, scenic in a low-key sort of way, and conducive to quiet reflection, mourning, and remembering. read more

I've been coming here since 1977. I've never seen the cemetery is worse shape. It looks as if it is abandoned. Burials in the earth must have plaques at the same level as the surrounding ground. Vertical headstones are not permitted. Not a problem. However many plaques cannot be read because of the over growing weeds and grass. Clover has taken over what appears to be 50% of the cemetery. I want to share my experience with George Washington Memorial Cemetery, where my mother, brother, aunt, and other family members are laid to rest. While I truly value that my loved ones are together my mother, Gloria Negron, resting alongside her sister Nidia Tirado and other family members I am very disappointed with how things have been handled following my brother's passing. My brother, Juan Reyes, was laid to rest with my mother last year. I paid for the opening and burial services, trusting that everything would be properly completed. However, it has now been a full year, and the headstone has still not been placed back. As it stands today, my mother and brother's resting place is left unfinished, marked only by a metal plate and dirt. This is not acceptable, and it's extremely upsetting for our family to see their resting place in this condition for such a long period of time. I am respectfully asking for someone from George Washington Memorial Cemetery to contact me immediately so we can resolve this matter. Our annual trip to George Washington Memorial Park yesterday was to put down grave blankets and clean up the resting places of our parents. Still find the area peaceful and serene - I also understand when others comment on the reduced park maintenance. Tough times for all, but glad the park is still operational. read more

No heart compassion went to burial site it was a mess headstone wasn't even wiped off covered with leaves.Not acceptable

I pre-planned my mother's burial. Having chose this facility 2+ yrs before she actually went. The grounds looked well kept and maintained and of course the price was good. Moving forward to burial, everything went smoothly. Chris was very helpful and accommodating. After burial, the customer service in office and maintenance has lacked luster to say the least. I swear every time I go to visit. I find her grave site looking unkept. I look around and I see other grave sites that are more recent and they look better than hers. This site, if it's not sunken in, there big rocky chunks of dirt piled on over leaves thru the fall and winter. No type of neatness, no rake the leaves out , no smooth the dirt over so that it's even and can settle the earth evenly. I'm tired of complaining and still find it a mess. It's already disheartening to lose your loved one and be grieving but then to go and find there final resting place looking like a pile of shit is the ultimate slap in the face. What disrespect for the dead. DONT LEAVE YOUR LOVED ONE HERE. THIS PLACE IS HORRIBLE !! read more

Personal Pros: Well kept, orderly and peaceful cemetery. Helpful staff. Easy to get to and very clean heated bathrooms. Personal Cons: No headstones, no artificial flowers, can't plant flowers, lacks diversity and charm. The biggest challenge is finding a grave because roads and rows are totally unmarked. Without a map, (which has limited info anyway because entire property is unmarked), it's easy to get lost and/or find a grave without staff help. read more

The cemetery is beautiful and well kept. My beloved mom/father/aunt and grandparents lay rest there. That's why it saddens me to write this review because after we left the graveside/ My mother's funeral. All of my immediate family has to use the restroom. They told us to use the ones at the entrance while they allowed our limousine drivers to go in the office. I feel this was truly racist and biases. read more

Why does this cemetery play music on Sunday afternoons? Is there some historical reason?

I never thought of rating a cemetery, but, this was a bad year for our family. My mother past away in June of this year at the age of 93 She would have been 94 on this day in December of 2012. So my two other brothers and I visited her burial plot on her birthday to pay our respects and to say some prayers. My Mom wanted to be buried within the immediate Bergen County area so we purchased a plot at GW Memorial the day after my mom past. Our collective negotiations with GW Memorial went very effectively within an hour or so. Our entire immediate family were all pleased with the choice of our plot. The on-site ceremony was also nice including our subsequent visits to GW Memorial including today. You don't normally want to think or plan for someone's passing or cemeteries during normal life, but, GW Memorial was very accommodating to our family needs. During this holiday season most of the plots including our mom's were adorned with evergreen wreaths or blankets in adoration. It was quite nice, but, somber. read more

When my sister was buried in George Washington Memorial Park Cemetery 14 years ago it was beautiful. At Christmas time it was just a sea of green wreaths all over the grounds which made a beautiful Christmas scene. The grass was green and she was buried near trees. The funeral director said it was a beautiful spot. Now when I go to visit my sister it is not well kept. There are certain bald spots where the grass does not grow, the grass is brown, and if there is some grass, it has grown to such heights it covers the grave markers. In the Fall you are walking on a pile of leaves. I called my co-worker, who also has a loved one buried there, and lives nearby, to ask her did the cemetery change hands because the conditions have changed. At one time I really liked this cemetery and had considered it for my mom because it was close, but we chose another one for her. read more

Despicable. The way the grounds crew drive over the grave sites leaving deep tire marks, gouging the ground, shifting the grave markers is inhumane. This is not a place of rest for the deceased. And what makes it best, no one at the cemetery really cares. read more
