I recently visited George's Coney Island in Worcester, after seeing that Tasting Table named George's the best hot dog in Massachusetts. They opened in 1918. And you can feel the old school vibes. They have old booths where you can take your dogs after you order. They also have counter service in the side room. George's grills Kayem Hot Dogs. Kayem originated in Mass btw. I always appreciate loyalty to in state makers. The classic George's dog is mustard, meat sauce and chopped onions. Standard white bun. I've seen mixed messages online about how you're supposed to order that dog. I've seen "All the Way." (Which is also how they say it in Providence). I've seen "Three Up", which is a new one for me. But the Menu actually says that a Coney is mustard, meat sauce and onions. So I ordered two coneys and everything worked out fine. The hot dogs were good, both in terms of the components, and in the sum of their parts. My dogs were not particularly snappy. I could see a grill mark. So perhaps it just needed a bit more turning so that it was more well done. Kayem is a good hot dog in terms of flavor. I prefer some other New England brands though. The meat sauce is good, but the seasoning didn't pop for me in the way that my favorite meat sauces do. I'm sure part of this is what you grew up with though. George's is a cool, old school, hot dog joint, that I imagine still does it like it always has. If that's how you like your hot dog spots, I suspect you'll love George's. 4.25 Stars read more

Wanted to try the real Georges before going into ballpark. Pulled in and parked behind the building. Time around 12:15 and a short quick moving line. I saw a special online but didn't see in the restaurant. It was 2 dogs and one of just about everything else (pie, pickle, chips, drink). I was not that hungry and really wanted to focus on the dogs. They were alright. To tell the truth I was really excited about the Orange Dry. It's like an Orangina only better! George's is a place if you grow up in W the dogs just taste better because they remind you of good times. It's like anyone's favorite pizza joint at the beach. I would definitely go back. Thumbs up for the vibe and the history of this classic lunch spot. Cool seeing the old wooden benches with carved initials, the worn Formica table tops, and that bright glowing retro jukebox. They do more than dogs - you can get burgers and sandwiches too. We opted for hot dogs of course - they're grilled and come with a few basic options for toppings: chili, cheese (not whiz but American slices), relish, onions, mustard, ketchup. No sauerkraut unfortunately which is my fave. The dogs are kind of on the salty side but overall not bad but not the best dogs either imo. We went to George's last night before the baseball game. It's not in a very nice neighborhood first off.... We past a drug deal and a hooker being propositioned on our walk there from the parking lot. Once inside it was a very old cool looking landmark kind of place the service was fantastic, we got there just before the crowd rolled in. The line grew quickly but these guys were pros.... The line moved quickly. It wasn't unusual to see guys ordering 6 dogs! the food is very good and it's not expensive at all. I planned to have lunch at George's Coney Island but was mega-disappointed when I learned they were closed on Tuesdays. So today I did the next best thing and had lunch at the George's Coney Island stand inside Polar Park Stadium. I mean, it was still a hot dog at the old ballpark, right? It was a real wave of nostalgia for me, because I lived in Worcester from 1977 to 1982, and let's just say I had a few lunches at their iconic Southbridge Street restaurant. I SOOOOOOOO wanted to visit again! George's Coneys at the ballpark are just $4, which is a buck less than the other hot dog stands, because the Coneys are a teense smaller than a conventional hot dog. We ordered two - one with just mustard for the Mrs. and one with ketchup, onions, and relish for me. We also split a giant pickle (sliced into 4 spears) for just $3. So at just $5.50 each we had a fantastic lunch! Its great to see that George's is still around, I hope to visit their Mother Ship one of these days. read more

It's not every day that you encounter a restaurant that is truly a relic of the past, a living testament to a time and place that once was. But today was one such day. Stepping into George's Coney Island Lunch was like being transported into a fusion of different eras. There's an eclectic charm to the decor here. A 1950s neon sign on the outside. A 1970s jukebox inside. Wooden seating with countless names carved into them, almost like embroidered graffiti. Even the employees were dressed in such a way that it seemed like I was in a different time period than Worcester, MA in 2024. But here me and my wife were in January 2024, admiring this gritty but wonderful establishment, because so many of these dives no longer exist. So much were we in awe that we forgot the reason why we walked in--to eat food. Before too long the waitstaff prodded us to put in our order. We each had two hot dogs with the "works," which the Worcesterites(?) call "up", plus cheese. This was undoubtedly one of the best hot dogs I have ever had. Its great taste was due in large part to the hearty and flavorful chili sauce, which really brought the whole thing together. And even though they just slapped a slice of half-melted American cheese on the bun, rather than using a cheese sauce that hot dog joints traditionally have, it was amazing. Together we scarfed down four dogs in no more than 7 minutes. I wish we had gotten more food, such as the homemade baked beans or the "half-sour" pickle. They don't serve fries, but with such a unique set of options, there is really no need for them. A crucial part of what makes this place great is that is 100% a local's joint. The pride for Worcester is absolutely clear. It serves many varieties of Polar Seltzer, which was founded in Worcester. They also have "Wachusett" brand chips, which originated within Worcester County. Moreover, the entire place is a nostalgic celebration of what Worcester once was, and, presumably, what locals hope it will become again: a strong and vibrant industrial town. I do not know enough about Worcester's history or its present state to say anything else on that topic, but I would like to return soon and learn more about this historic city. During moments like these I can't help but wonder how long these kinds of places will be around. The precarious economic state in which we find ourselves is not only a challenge to the average consumer; it's also suffocating the average small business. Rising inflation, demographic shifts, and changes in consumer taste make it far more difficult now than 10 years back for small business like George's to turn a decent profit. Yet I get the sense that the proud Worcester locals will take care of this timeless hot dog spot. It is a treasure worth saving. read more
