Our absolute favorite Mexican restaurant on the Northshore! Truly authentic, great atmosphere and service; we have never had a bad meal.

The food was tasty, and the staff was friend. If you are looking for some good Tex-Mex this is the place.

In the past, whenever my wife and I decided on Mexican food, we would find ourselves at La Carreta's. While the food and drinks were good, the last time we were there, the food and service were lacking. So this past Saturday evening, we wanted some Mexican food but, really didn't want La Carreta's food. We discovered George's. Tucked away, off North Causeway, we found a gem of an eating place. The food was excellent (my wife had crunchy tacos and I had the Honduran Pork Loin). She enjoyed a top-shelf margarita and I had one of the best glasses of Sangria that I had yet to find. Crisp red wine coupled with the fresh snap of orange and lemon, it was great! The chips and salsa were very good. The food was well seasoned, balanced without beating up your taste buds without being overly spiced. We finished up with a serving of their flan and two Mexican coffees. The flan, smooth and not too sweet went well with the coffees which kept the elements of cocoa, cinnamon and sugar in check. Again, not the cloyingly sweet confection, which I've found, at some places, is meant to hide the imbalance of the other flavors. Our server, Amanda, did a wonderful job of being attentive without being intrusive. Her suggestion of the Mexican coffee with the flan was spot on and our enjoyment of them sparked the interest of the couple seated nearby. They asked how they were and we recommended that they give it a try. All in all, a warm friendly dining experience in a very comfortable setting with good people to enhance your time spent there. Looking for a fancy Mexican place? - Keep looking. Looking for a hole-in-the wall that serves some of the best Mexican on the North shore - maybe even in the entire Metro New Orleans area? - Found it! George's is a total dive - and I say that with love. And the food ROCKS! As far as the food goes it's basic, rather simple Mexican. But it's rather simple Mexican of very high quality! Outstanding fajitas! The sizzling pork is to die for good - sort of like fried pulled pork with lots of onions and good stuff mixed with it. Really, an excellent dish! But of course being a Mexican restaurant one must discuss the margaritas. I like mine straight up on the rocks and George did a very good one. Top shelf tequila, fresh lime, not too sweet. Bottom line: Yes, it's in a strip mall. Yes, it's a total dump. Yes, the food is amazing. Go. Now!! read more

This place was a nice surprise, our waitress was incredibly sweet, helpful, and quick too! Delicious guacamole, salsa, and beef enchiladas with queso. Save some room for dessert, their sopapilla is enough in its own for me to go back! read more

Well, this was a first: a frozen margarita that tasted WARM. I ordered a mango margarita, and watched as the server poured the mango flavored mixer into the bottom of my glass, then dispensed frozen margarita from a machine on top of it, and hand it to me without stirring or mixing. My first sip was of pure mango mixer. How the hell can a frozen margarita be warm?? But this restaurant found a way. Next was chips and salsa. The salsa was overly spicy (and I like spicy salsa) and was warm, not cold. It obviously had not been kept refrigerated. The chips did not seem to be freshly fried, they were light colored and were a dead ringer for the $2 "Santita's" you can get in the grocery store. Crabmeat stuffed jalapeno was awful. Tasted like canned crabmeat with breadcrumbs. Had absolutely no richness of depth of flavor. Not sure how a jalapeno can be bland, but again, this restaurant found a way. It came with a side of cheese dip. It had a good texture, not too watery, but it tasted more salty than cheesy. I might reserve judgement on the queso fundido, since I am unfamiliar with this dish and maybe this is the way it is supposed to be served. It was very rubbery, as if it was 100% mozzarella. It was hard to scoop out the cheese like this. The pico de gallo it came with was excellent, very cool and refreshing. The only item that was done right! The chicken nachos made me laugh: they were covered with *orange slices of American cheese!** The dish had three elements to it: a chip, a big chunk of chicken, and a piece of melted cheese. I managed to doctor this up by adding the pico de gallo from the queso fundido appetizer, and it became palatable. A previous Yelper said that Taco Bell is a step above this, and I have to agree. The lack of care here is obvious and sad. The server made me feel extremely rushed, trying to take my plates at every turn, and I had to shoo him off a couple of times. They were good about doing separate checks, which is always nice. However, I hope never to return. read more

It takes a lot for me to review a place. Either you are great and worth my time or I am so upset that I have to warn others. George's falls into the latter. I have been there in the past and was impressed with the food, service, and margaritas. Today I thought I was in a different place. Is it under different management? I will never go back there again. My fajitas were burned and the margaritas had no alcohol or taste. When I complained they made me another one. But they charged me another $7.50. I inquired and they said it was a large and therefore $18..50 total!! That was not on the menu and besides the first one had no alcohol in it. As I said I have been here before and had the "same" drink and it tasted better, was the same size and was not twice the price! I really felt cheated and ripped off. Such a shame to see the decline. One of the better Mexican restaurants I have eaten at in the area. Service was great. I had the burrito dinner which came with a bean, beef and chicken burrito which was good. Nothing to complain about here. read more

This place is great for chips and salsa and Margaritas! I like the ambiance here it's pretty chill. They have TVs for watching sports. It's nicely decorated and George the owner is usually there. The food is mediocre and some things are highly overpriced. But we go for the good cheap drinks!! They have indoor and a nice patio outdoor seating. This is one of the best Mexican restaurants in the area. read more

As far Mexican food goes, it's not great. I will say that the two best things at George's are the service and the salsa. Other than that everything seems to be prepackaged food that's being heated up. I won't say it's a bad restaurant (because I've certainly had worse), but it's definitely not great Tex Mex by any means. read more

This place has been here for 20+ years for a reason. Great food and always super friendly staff. Great place to be a regular, but they will treat you like you are even on your first visit. They do the standard dishes well, but what sets George's apart are the dishes that you don't see at every Mexican joint. They have a filet called "Carne a la Parrilla". Order it. The wait staff was helpful, and the ambiance was cozy and traditional. The live music (a solo mexican guitar) was not intrusive and was a nice touch. Food was fantastic, hot and fresh... i highly recommend the fiery garlic shrimp. read more

Been to places in Mexico, Cali, Texas, & Louisiana & let me tell you... George's is still my FAVORITE Bang for your buck & you will be as full as a tick with leftovers! This is one of our "go to" Mexican restaurants on the Northshore. It has a great family atmosphere with the best frozen margarita and fajitas around. You can save some money in your party with people pairing up to get the fajitas "for 2". Between the fajitas and chips and salsa you will get your fill. read more

Definitely won't be returning to this place. Chips were stale & we had to ask for some more. The second batch was better. Salsa was just ok. I had the chalupas. They put way to much lettuce. I could even see the shredded chicken there was so much lettuce & it was topped off with liquid cheese instead of shredded. Yuck! My husband had carne asada that was decent but way too many onions. It looks like they cut up a whole onion to put on his plate. When I called to make sure they were open because it was the 4th of July weekend, the girl that answered said they closed around 8-8:30 when their hours stated they close at 9. Who says that?! Service was good but nothing over the top.i would definitely not recommend this place. We usually go to Mimamacitas but it's a small restaurant & we had a large party & they last time we went there we had to sit separately from our party. Excellent table side guacamole. Food is fresh and hot. Nice atmosphere. Chips are served hot and the salsa was delicious. We will be back.

Very disappointed with the service and food. We understand everyone is understaffed and overwhelmed. The food was cold both mine and my wife's. We had to wait a while to be seated and the place was nearly empty with no employees in sight. After being seated by the busboy we had to ask our waiter for menus which I feel should be given to you as soon as you are seated and drink orders are taken. The quality of the food was not good. Everything was covered with a brown sauce that took away from what was underneath. Needless to say we will not be going back. Maybe they owners or manager should visit Carreta's because they have stepped up their service and menu. I am not trying to be mean just being honest. This used to be my favorite place for Mexican in Mandeville. The quality has been going down for years now and the prices have been rising. I went for my birthday a few weeks ago and had the shrimp burritos and my wife had the grilled chicken. The burritos had about 5 shrimp in them with some sort of chile sauce that looked and tasted like it came out of a can. My wife's chicken was covered in cilantro, which was not how it was described on the menu, and undercooked. We sent hers back only to have it come out again with cilantro on it. The nachos adobados are about the only reason I would go here now. That probably still isn't enough to make me want to go back, what a shame. read more

Went there the other day and had a quality Mexican meal. The food was good and so was the salsa. My only issue was the price of the entrees pretty expensive for Mexican food. Besides that I would definitely recommend it. read more

Went to George's on Tuesday February 18th with the wife and kiddos. We live around the corner on Brookside. Our experience started with a poor waitress, who seemed in a rush the entire time, even though the restaurant was empty. Also, she did not discuss any specials, etc. I ordered a coke and it was flat. My daughter wanted cheese dip, so we ordered a small dip and never received it. She said that she did not here me order it. If she would had asked us if we wanted an appetizer and written any of our order details down, we probably would have had a much better experience. I had to ask about specials and once I did, she mentioned taco tuesday, I ordered 2 chicken and 1 beef. Received 2 beef and 1 chicken, so I had to ask for a replacement. My wife ordered chicken taco salad and the chicken was dry with no taste. We both agreed that all of the products served to us were not fresh. You get one shot in today's competitive environment and we will not be returning. We have dines at Carretas many times and their food quality and dining experience is very consistent. read more

BY far the best fajita's in town! George's has been around forever and it has always had good food. You can't go wrong with the fajita's though! Atmosphere is good. You can dine inside or out, which is nice. One of the owner's is usually there and always makes a point to stop and the table and see if anything is needed and also makes a point to walk you out. Every time I order from the waiter app they conveniently forget my extras that they over charge for to begin with. I wish they would pay more attention to what they are doing it's like McDonald's in there it didn't use to be this way. read more

The hostess greeted us with a cheerful tone. Our server was excellent. She behaved as if she was actually happy to serve us. She was very pleasant. The food on the other hand was bland. The ground beef needed more seasoning. I got a combination platter which had ground beef in the taco and enchilada. The tamale on the platter was very good. The salsa was better than most Mexican places in the area. I will give this place a second chance only because the service was so good and to try something else on the menu. read more

Wehrmacht ad dinner last nite, three types of fajitas the best chicken, number two for me was the shrimp, then the beef, all very tasty just had to put them in order. Georges has the best Mexican on the North Shore hands down. The service was perfect and the dishes even better. My husbands had the Filet which was cooked perfectly and tender. I had the Acapulco (tacos, enchilada and tamale). All were delicious! read more

Found the service average at best. Once had to go to the bar to get my water glass refilled. But the food is good and I do return. Favorite dish of most people is the Fiery Garlic Shrimp. Worth a trip just for that. Can't comment on the whole menu, but it is worth the trip just for that. read more

Stopped by for Cinco de Mayo lunch expecting to be late. They were so organized we had time to spare. Lunch was served hot & fresh and everything was delicious. Hadn't been there for lunch figuring it was a touch further than our 1 hour normal would allow but it will now become a frequent stop. Fajita for 1 is certainly big enough for 2 and contained plenty chicken. I was a tad disappointed to notice that it did not come with cheese or sour cream but it was inexpensive to add those two on and it did come with guacamole which is something you don't always see. read more
