George's is just great. Every time I'm in town visiting my Grandparents, this is where we go. It's always for lunch, so I can't speak for dinner. In previous visits, I've enjoyed crab cake sandwiches and burgers. Yesterday, we stopped in for lunch after church. Somehow, we all ended up ordering one of the specials: BBQ brisket with mashed potatoes. From the choice of soup or salad, we all chose salad. It was your typical garden salad and the balsamic vinaigrette dressing was good. The brisket cut really easily and practically melted away in our mouths because it was cooked just right. The flavor was really good and especially complimented by the BBQ sauce. Our sweet tea was fresh, sweetened just right, and replenished regularly. When you go to George's, you see the same servers and smiling faces. We also run into people my Grandparents have known over the years, so it's clearly a local favorite. I've frequented George's since I was a young buck, but this last trip I began to realize that eateries around town may be a better option. They were packed (as usual) for a Saturday night, and seating took no time at all, nonetheless. We sat down to order, and I wanted to try something different. However, I didn't want to pay $21 for eight deep fried scallops, so I went for my usual - hamburger steak with onions and gravy (they charge .80 for the onions, and double it if you want onions and mushrooms). It comes with a side, and a choice of soup or salad. So I ordered a salad with ranch, and hamburger steak med-well with fries. I investigated an appetizer too, but I didn't want to pay $7 for 5 mozzarella sticks. When the salad came out, some of the lettuce was brown, and the salad was flat with the dressing dumped on it. The bread with it was delectable, and hot (big plus for me). I cannot stand cold food coming to a table after waiting tables for the past five years. Entrees rolled out after salads, but this is when it went downhill. Not only was my entire meal lukewarm, my med-well steak had to walk back because I got it rare. So, while I waited, I tried some of someone else's scallops plate they ordered. The scallop was cooked well - but AVOID the coleslaw - you could taste the horseradish in it, and never have I had a harder time getting a taste out of my mouth. When my food got back after getting warmed, it was okay - but nothing on my plate was seasoned at all. No salt or pepper on the fries, and the steak was kind of bland. There were a load of servers working, and all of them seemed to do well. The owners just sat behind the counter and collected the bill. Presentation of food and atmosphere, accuracy, and flavors could improve, but SOS and servers saved it tonight. read more

My wife and I last Friday decided to go and have a date at George's Steak house. My wife ordered their Lasagna which was awesome and way to much food but great to take home for seconds. I ordered the greek salad and again thought it was awesome. The price of their food I feel is right on, and the food presentation was excellent. Dislike, I didn't like how close everyone is, granted we didn't have to wait to be seated but I also don't like rubbing shoulders with others I don't know especially on a date with my wife. All in all I was very happy with this place and had a great date. read more

I had dinner last night with a party of 8 at George's Steak House. The steak was mostly fat and gristle. My salad was warm, limp and not fresh. The baked potato was good. The wait staff was friendly and helpful but the man at the register taking money was unpleasant to the point of rudeness. I strongly and firmly agree with the customer that wrote a review on 8/12/17. The owner or owners at the counter taking your money is very rude to the point you don't want to come back. When I read the review on 8/12/17 that said "if they are rude to customers I can't help but wonder how they treat their employees". THAT IS SO TRUE... Often ate here as a kid with my grandparents. Staff was always friendly but the food was never very good. Tried it again this past weekend and it was crowded just as I remembered. The steak was cold by the time it got to my table and the salad was nothing but lettuce with dressing and a couple tomatoes. Everything tasted bland. I realized the crowd was elderly people, it's good elderly people have a place they frequent, but the crowd doesn't mean the business has great food, only that the business has food that meets the specific needs that the elderly has in order to eat. When I'm old perhaps I'll give George's Steakhouse a try again. read more

George's is a Suffolk institution! I have been going to George's for over twenty years and have never once had a bad experience or a bad meal, and the take out is as solid as dining in. Top recommendations are the Romanian Steak, Hamburger Steak, and Crab Cakes and at lunch the Steak Sub which you can only get at lunch. The remoulade with the crab cakes is outstanding, the marinade and au jus for the Romanian Steak is outstanding, and the Steak Sub is the best i've ever had. The french fries are also a treat, hand cut, but thinner than what you might traditionally think of hand cut fries. The salads are also huge and flavorful. The portions are large, the prices are very reasonable and, I am a big guy and I can tell you that when you finish your meal you are full. The last thing I'll say and the thing I like most about George's is the family and neighborhood atmosphere. Two brothers run the restaurant with their sons and they make you feel welcome and because it is a Suffolk staple, it is hard not to bump into someone you know or a city official. If you are in downtown Suffolk, you should certainly make the trip out Holland Road and give this place a try. read more

Tonight my wife and I went to Georges for dinner. We have been several times and the food has been hit or miss (more miss than hit). However, against our better judgement we decided to go to this shit hole for dinner once again. Here is my issue tonight with this sorry excuse for a restaurant. I ordered the Romanian steak requesting it to be cooked medium. The place was kinda of busy so the food took about 15 minutes to come which is about average no real complaint there. However, when the food arrives I find that my steak is way under cooked. However, me being the passive person I am I decide to go ahead and try to eat it as the outside of the steak was cooked rare and I can tolerate that, however as i moved towards the center I find that the steak is completely raw. The whole time I am eating the waitress is no where to be found, she didn't come to our table to check on us not one time. While me and my wife were sitting at the table waiting for our waitress we notice that the folks behind us food looks raw as well, and we over here them complaining about it. They shared the same waitress as us so I assume that their service was as equally as shitty. Finally our waitress shows up to their table and they explain that their food was raw and that they want the check she walks away and comes back to their table and tells them that their food is on the house tonight. After all that she comes to our table and I show her my steak and tell her that is is completely raw. She just looks at me rudely and ask what I want her to do, "Do you want it cooked longer or do you want another one". We had already been there almost an hour so getting another steak was out of the question; we had to go. So she brings us the check and charges us full price after giving the other couple a free meal, I found that very insulting. Well I bit my lip and went to the counter to pay and the man at the cash register who I assume is an owner of the business asked if everything is ok and I didn't respond so he ask again and I respond with a snide "it was alright". He then ask what was wrong, and I explain to him about my steak and he says with no apology "well we could have put it back on the grill for you". He charges us 30 dollars knowing that the cook sucks as he just gave another couple a free meal because they had the same damn issue. And yes maybe you could have put the steak back on the grill if your shitty waitstaff came to check on us from time to time. Bottom line though, when someone asks for their steak to be cooked medium it should come to the table cooked medium, NOT RAW!!!! We will never eat there again. read more

We have been long time patrons of George's Steak House in Suffolk, VA. It has been a popular place for locals to dine and when children come home a must location to share a meal. Over the years we have seen the prices rise to the point it is now a luxury to dine there rather than just go there whenever we want to go out. With the rise in price the food quality did not change, it remained pleasing to the palate. However, the past few times we have dined there we have not been as pleased. We no longer live in Suffolk, So this past Wednesday night (Nov 9), we drove 50 minutes from home to dine at Georges and were not pleased at all with our meal or service. They had run out of the soup of the day and when the substitute soup came out it was barely warm (even the waitress acknowledged it). Then when my wife realize she had not been given a spoon, she had to wait to get the waitresses attention. When she did get her attention she then waited for the waitress to take food to another table. My wife decided to carry it home to warm up the next day. We both order their hamburger steaks. Mine was supposed to be medium, but came out extremely rare and our french fries were not hot. Not saying we won't go back, but the service and quality of the food was not worth the price of over $30 for hamburger steaks with cheese and one sweet tea! read more
