We drove around and saw the locals out and enjoying the beautiful vistas, the ballfields and getting exercise in. The topography consists of a large grassy meadow sloping upwards towards hills that overlook the Brandywine River. Here can be had many views of the city of Wilmington. Be careful. It's a really steep drop to the river. Thankfully, There are many trees planted there that would discourage those with intact brain cells from attempting a descent. History nerd moment 1: The park is on the National Historic Registry. History nerd moment 2: Rockford Tower was built as a water tower over 100 years ago. From what I hear if you climb those spiral stairs to the top there are some of the best views of the city. History nerd moment 3: A few examples of statuary that were well cared for and well preserved. Of particular note was a statue of Samuel DuPont in civil war military attire at the Tower Road entrance very close to the famous Tower Hill school. Wonder why Dupont got such an illustrious statue when Bancroft donated 59 acres of his property and Dupont had to be convinced by Bancroft to donate 9 acres? There must be a statue of William Bancroft in the park somewhere. I'm going back soon to find it.

(The museum told me that they do charge for parking on the weekends for tubers. The trip took us 3 hrs and 43 minutes with the water level at 1.92 on the usgs sensor at the museum sensor #01481000. I used a regular walmart intex river run tube and weighing in at 220lbs did not have to portage or get out of the tube at all on this stretch. Paddles are recommended , though we did not bring them. Also make sure you have watershoes. There are portable toilets, trash receptacles, grills and picnic tables at the smith bridge road parking lot.

It's a relatively short but beautiful paved trail that goes mostly along the…read morerailroad tracks, but through a few stretches of mature deciduous forest, and a couple extensive wetland areas, one at each end of the path. The path is fabulous for birdwatching, especially as it goes through Phillips park, but also at several other points on the path. It's also convenient for travelling through town on bike. If you live in Newark, I highly recommend checking this path out, and I especially recommend checking out Phillips park, at the Southwest end of the path.

This sort of boring trail becomes more interesting as you head deeper in. At the very end of the…read moretrail is the prize for your efforts... it might be the most beautiful nature scene in the entire area. To really take it in, you have to go off the trail just a little bit. One slight problem: the trail has been closed because a very small part of the trail has severe erosion. There is a chance you could fall straight down maybe 10 feet if you go beyond the barrier and aren't paying attention... and then there is always the chance the earth will cave in on you as you are screaming for help. If you lack common sense, don't go back there. Parking is abundant. There are more trails on the other side of Ridley Creek. That part of this nature area is known as the Louis W. Scott Memorial Park.

Middletown Township Memorial Park is located directly across Balt Pike from Media Waterworks. It is…read morehome to the Middletown Township "Millennium Trail" which parallels the western side of Ridley Creek. The trail is singular and is pretty much a straight line, following the bank of the creek, with a loop at the far end, to bring you back out the same straight. There is a power station to the west of the trail which you see somewhat early into the walk. Various benches to sit on along the way, which is nice. Shaded spots, sunny spots, and various slips for creek access. There is pretty wooded scenery, nothing remarkable, but a decent way to get a nature fix for a 1/2 mile's walk (a mile up and back). Today's visit was early June and the trail was full of baby frogs (thumbnail size) hopping across, all headed to the meadow, from the stream. They were super fast too, otherwise I'd have taken a pic. I remember visiting this greenspace as a kid, but the trail is much newer. I presume it was added at the turn of this century, thus the name. I do not recommend this, but we used to ice skate here as kids. The ice got thick enough to hold the dads supervising these crazy adventures, but it was always really bumpy ice (NOT good), and you never knew when it was going to get deadly. So I don't condone this at all, but just a little history, that people used to do that here, back in the day when no one wore seatbelts or bike helmets and all.

Don't know where they lead too, didn't bother to find out. From what I've seen on my trips to the library over the years it looks like the park is largely used by little leauges as there are several schools also in the area. Plenty of parking as well.

Full disclosure, a large part of the trail that goes through New Castle was my childhood in the…read more80's. Before this trail existed in New Castle, there once was railroad tracks and a train that would come along once in a while. "The tracks" as we called them, was our byway to school or Old New Castle. Long gone is the train and "the tracks" but what lies in its wake is a paved trail. This trail is roughly 10 miles round trip and runs from Old New Castle to Wilmington. On a fall day, my wife and I decided to walk this trail. We started in Old New Castle at New Castle Elementary School. The beauty of the Fall enhanced the trail. You immediately are walking through wetlands. After the wetlands, the course is sandwiched between Jefferson Farms (were I lived growing up) and Manor Gardens. The course then goes through an industrial park and crosses over Boulden Blvd and past Suburban Little League. After the baseball field, you go past Wilmington Manor before It runs under a couple of I-95 bridges, you pass the women's prison and the Delaware State Hospital. There is a nice pedestrian bridge that crosses over the Christina River and leads into more wetlands. Finally, the course ends at the DuPont Environmental Station. By this point, you are at the Wilmington Riverfront. After all this walking we grabbed a bite to eat before heading back down the trail. All in all, this is a great trail for walking, running, or biking.

Parking is extremely limited at the Valley Road parking lot. One solution to not having a parking option there is to park at the YMCA. They have a long trail that leads from their property on to the Rocky Run Trail. But they don't advertise this. There is no signage. It's up to you to find the entry trail into the forest. How to do this: Simplest way is to park in the rear lot. Find the retaining wall. The entrance to the forest is there. Take the first trail to your left. Go beyond the picnic table area and bear left. Follow the trail until it intersects with the Rocky Run Trail. I recommend going leftwards. This will eventually take you past a small sewage treatment plant. Cross Valley Road and pick up the trail again. And this is where it gets really interesting.

An easy way to find the parking lot is just to take Darlington Road off of Route 1. As soon as you…read morecross the bridge over Chester Creek, the parking lot will be immediately on your right. Like with the Rocky Run Trail, parking is very limited. An alternative is to park on Stephen Drive and enter the Cornucopia Trail. Stephen Drive is in a nice residential area. Your car is probably a little bit safer there. The Cornucopia Trail merges with the Darlington Trail. Wherever you begin to explore, it's going to be a big walk with various kinds of terrain and vistas. My favorite part is where Darlington Trail goes into the forest along the Rocky Run Creek. If you encounter a black Labrador while nearing a home that borders the trail, don't worry about him. He's got one of those shock collars on. He just likes to run around and make a lot of noise.
