I had a permanent retainer that had popped on one side and my previous orthodontist had retired. I went to my main dentist who had reglued, charged me $200 to only have it pop off again 2 days later. I heard good things about him so I called for an appointment. He actually stayed late to see me that same day (due to my work hours) of his own accord, completely removed and reglued the retainer. He was personable, easy to talk to, extremely friendly and made sure everything was perfect before sending me on my way. All this work and he did not charge me a nickel. I met this man only once and he has my complete trust as a patient. And this is coming from a girl that has anxiety about dentists.

However, I sincerely hope what happened to us will not happen to other kids or parents.We started my daughter's orthodontic treatment on 2/5/2025. The treatment plan cost $5,510, and the main issue was her underbite. In May 2026, the doctor told us that my daughter was ready to have her braces removed and that his work was done. At that time, I told him there was still a big gap around the left canine. He continued the treatment for another four months. After those additional four months, he told us that everything was now perfect and removed the braces. Before the braces were removed, I told him that now the gaps were open on both sides, the upper teeth were slightly tilted, and my daughter had also developed what looked like buckteeth. He told me that the bite was good and that the teeth would bite together after the braces were removed.After the braces were taken off, I told him very clearly that this was not the result he had originally told us we would get, and it was not what I paid for.He insisted that his work was done and said that he could not put the braces back on because we did not pay for a second set of braces.I told him that I did not pay for two or three sets of braces. I paid for the entire orthodontic treatment to be completed correctly.He responded, "How about the time I put into this?"I told him that I never asked him to refund the treatment fee. My time and my daughter's time are also valuable. However, you spoke as if I had not paid you enough to complete the treatment properly?I asked him several times to communicate with me about a solution and actually listen to what I was saying.He responded by saying that those four teeth did not need to touch each other. He said that when my daughter eats, the teeth will touch, and when she grinds her teeth from side to side, they will also touch.I asked him, "Who is going to grind their teeth from side to side all day long ?I also asked him why he did not use articulating or bite paper to check the gaps and contact points between the teeth, because I personally have had orthodontic treatment before, and my other children have also had orthodontic treatment with other orthodontists.He said he did not need to use the paper because he could simply look with his eyes.He then pointed to the front two teeth and said, "See, the front two teeth are touching the lower teeth."I looked closely and told him that only one of the teeth was actually touching.He immediately changed what he was saying and told me that both teeth did not need to touch the lower teeth and that one tooth touching was enough. He said all of these issues were within tolerance and functional. It's the shape of the teeth, not the gaps. I can't believe that comes from a doctor who just ignores all the issues we pointed out and refuse to admit that he is unable to complete his job. He then turned around and asked my 15-year-old daughter, "Do you want to continue wearing braces, or are you happy with it?" I told him, "How can you, as a 50-year-old adult man, design a question like this and ask a 15 yrs teenage girl?"Anyone who has worn braces for that long is obviously going to say that they do not want to continue wearing braces. This is a manuplating question that take advantage of a 15 yrs teenager's understandable desire to be done with braces in order to make the situation easier for himself instead of taking responsibility for completing the treatment properly. I asked him several times to use the bite paper to check the four large gaps on both sides and the front teeth.His response was, "I can do it only to make you happy."I told him, "I don't need you to do anything just to make me happy. I need you to do the right thing and do your job correctly. "Throughout the conversation, he continued pushing the responsibility onto my daughter by repeatedly asking whether she was happy with the result.He then asked me to leave.I told him, "You are asking a 15-year-old teenage girl to make this decision, while asking her mother, who is the adult responsible for her care, to leave?" My daughter cried because she felt pressured by the doctor asking her to say that she was happy with his work.We never asked the doctor for a refund. The only thing we asked was for him to complete the orthodontic treatment properly instead of rushing us and asking us to accept the current problems- the four teeth with noticeable gaps, the upper teeth appearing tilted toward one side, and the fact that the original underbite now appears to have turned into buckteeth.I understand that a large percentage of an orthodontist's patients are children and teenagers. I do not believe this is the right way for an adult professional to communicate with teenage patients or to put pressure on them through carefully designed questions when there is a disagreement the treatment result.

Who's business is my treatment but mine and the doctors? Aside from the fact that THAT is unprofessional enough, his response is a blatant lie. I received treatment at the age of 14, I am now 21. Following the "quality care" for over a year, I wore my retainers nightly, until I came to the conclusion that they were making my teeth worse. I told Bernuy at MULTIPLE visits, my jaw feels misaligned. He continued to tell me its fine and to keep wearing my retainers. Eventually I stopped. Because why would I wear something that my mouth feels better and more natural without? To live my life with misaligned and uncomfortable teeth? My newfound gap between my front teeth was apparent to everyone IMMEDIATELY after getting my braces off. I told Bernuy continuously that there were issues with my retainers, he offered no solutions. Today, my jaw without my retainers is PERFECTLY aligned, which can draw the conclusion that the retainers were clearly the issue. My teeth were also not bad enough to need braces from the very beginning, hence such short treatment (1 year and 1 month). They should have turned me away upon consultation, as I was clearly just a child who wanted braces because they thought they were cool. And I still have a Gap. So thanks for nothing Bernuy. I decided to get the clear Angel aligners. I was awed and a bit overwhelmed by the equipment in the office and the ability to take a few pictures and have aligners made for the year. The front office staff, the patient care coordinator, and the certified dental assistants are GREAT. You can have the best dental work but, staff makes the difference. Always encouraging and happy. And, every staff member has beautiful teeth. That, to me, was a good sign. -- Doc Ak and staff try to make the orthodontist visits a little fun by having monthly contests, raffles, and quizzes. While these activities are probably geared more toward younger patients, I must admit, I did participate in some of them. Prizes are awarded to the monthly winners and are announced in the informative monthly newsletter. Most of the activity with the aligners took place at home. I would take weekly pictures of the aligners in and out of my mouth using the Grin app and then progress to the next aligner after SmileOn review. For context, I had braces as a teenager -- five years on top and four years on the bottom. When they were removed, I had perfect teeth and was given a permanent bottom retainer that lasted over 15 years. Unfortunately, one day I bit into an apple and the permanent retainer came off. I went to another orthodontist to have a removable bottom retainer made. It never fit correctly, and despite several visits for adjustments, it was never fixed properly. Because it did not fit as it should have, my bottom teeth shifted and a gap formed between my two front teeth -- something I had never experienced before.
